Let's kick off the new year by looking back at the old. It's Gear of the Year time! My life has been seriously busy lately, so I was honestly considering not making this video this year, but so many of you asked about if I could do one, that I couldn't find it in my heart to let you down. So thank you for reaching out and letting me know that this type of video is appreciated
I doubt Boards of Canada would like to be put in a box though.
My favorite new pedal released in 2021 is the All Pedal Macrodose Envelope Filter. But my favorite pedal I received in 2021 is the Hologram Electronics Microcosm, which I received in February and has changed my approach and sound.
BTW, great to see “Pedal Crush” and “Push Turn Move” right behind you on the shelf. Those two books are awesome- I just interviewed the publisher/author, Kim Bjørn, a couple of weeks ago.

I know there’s no rankings but raster deserves that top spot imo, red panda clearly put so much time and effort into it and it shows, no compromises and so very unique.

Raster is so special. It was the last pedal I demoed in 2021, and still it managed to leave one of the strongest impressions that year. I'm typically creatively exhausted and spent at the end of the year, but Raster totally turned that around. I felt so inspired when I filmed that demo. The cool tones just kept flowing from that magical device. Thank you for the sweet words about the videos and the community that's been built around them. I truly appreciate you all so much ❤

I can't describe how much I love this and Mark Johnston's channels. You both changed my way of playing (after 15 years of studying and playing guitar) and inspired me into a whole new approach.
Unfortunately getting to that level also requires of gear, expensive and difficult to get gear, specially if you live in a third world country.. but I'm getting there little by little, cent by cent, and that satisfaction is worth every penny.
Thank you so much! Really kind words from you. And yes, Mark is amazing. Such a good dude. I would say that the amount of gear needed probably isn't as important as you think. You can get very far with a decent reverb and delay, and maybe a pitch-shifter and looper. But there is indeed some very special devices out there than can unleash some serious tonal torrents unlike anything else.
Superb run down, my friend. It just highlights how varied your musical pallette is and how you have improved so much as a multi instrumentalist. You can tease out sounds from pedals that I never could, or even thought possible! 2021 was a tough year, but your musical companionship made it more bearable. ❤️

I appreciate you including the expression ramper in the list. I think it gets overlooked for the reasons you said in the video. I got one along with the sunlight about a month ago and was blown away by both.
Expression Ramper is just too good. Definitely a ton of fun together with Sunlight. I like to use it to move the fixed filter in Sample & Hold mode for sweeping synth-like pads.

Best pedal I played this year was the Deranged pedal by Crazy Tube Circuits. Had my eye one one for the longest time and finally pulled the trigger on one. I love the wild synthy goodness I’m able to achieve with it!

What a way to reflect on 2021 - after the busiest and intense year of your life, I hope you have time to yourself to rest and recharge! Your videos have guided my gear buying decisions since I started tuning in, and you've never let me down! I agree on the Expression Ramper - nothing better than a pedal that breathes new life into your existing set up! I also picked up a Raster 2 after watching your fantastic demo at least 8 times. The guitar playing in that video is some of your best (imo) Thanks so much Stefan for creating all of these sonic oases during a turbulent 2021

I'm glad you included the OBNE Expression Ramper ( or Eyeball pedal as my music partner calls it a.k.a. " we're buying pedals for our pedals now?) . It gets my vote for best pedal of the year hands down. So inexpensive and so rad, it cracks open any pedal with an Expression in. It got pretty meta when we used the Expression Ramper to modulate an EHX 8 step Sequencer that was itself modulating a Tensor... hahhaa. Is that buying pedals for your pedal that you bought for your pedal?
Anyway, always look forward to your videos, your enthusiasm and your sounds. Lysis seems like a win, have to check that out. Have you tried it on drum machines? My buddy was asking the name of your band and I didn't know.

Definitely surprised by how much I loved your SY-200 demo here. Not connecting with the SY-1, I blew this off. But OMG! You've also highlighted just how useful the Expression Ramper is (been sleeping on this one) and the Raster...woah. Also enjoy how you musically applied the Sunlight.
This past year's highlight for me was the Red Panda Particle v2- my first granular pedal. It was a game changer, but only the beginning on discovering new sound designs....
I'm happy to hear that the video was able to give you a new perspective on a couple of devices. And stoked to hear you got a Particle 2. I recently got one as well, and it's mind-blowing. That and Raster 2 are such insane sound design machines.

My discovered Solid Gold FX pedals this year, they quickly became some of my favorite pedals, I had to get the EM-III and the Lysis MK-II, great pedals!

Can the OBNE ex ramper control multiple parameters at once?
Cheers, bud! Expression Ramper can control what the expression capable pedal is allowing to be controlled. So it all depends on the pedal you’re using it together with. If you’re using a Meris or Red Panda pedal for instance, then yes, you can ramp several controls at once. If you’re using an Old Blood Noise Dweller for instance, then you can only ramp the Stretch control, because that’s the only parameter that’s expression controllable on that specific pedal.
Awesome summary! Not entirely new (I think it was 2019-20?), but I got the Neunaber Immerse MKII in 2021 and it blew my mind. I thought I'd known beautiful reverb, but that pedal is just magic.

I figured I’d make this a separate comment, but my favorite pedal this year was actually a Kraken Tube Preamp pedal. It’s amazing because it can connect to your effects loop to take over your preamp, and when you bypass it, you’re patched back into your amps built-in preamp. You can have it set up this way and still utilize your effects in the effects loop while the pedal is bypassed. All in all, it can turn your single channel amp into a three channel amp.
I’ve been using the OBNE Expression Ramper to control the mix function on the Hologram Electronics Microcosm and it’s a game changer for using the Microcosm live.
Nice! Sounds like a really clever way to use it. Makes sense to have the beautiful textures of Microcosm creep in and out of the mix to add some intrigue and dynamics.

Hi I was thinking of getting the Raster, is it tough get sounds out of it, or is it intuitive, I'm wanting to give up my strymon timeline for something simpler and more fun, do you recommend the Raster 2?
@@JJT007hero Hey James, I’ve never used a Strymon Timeline so I can’t compare the process of creating sounds on the two units, but I can say with certainty that Raster is fun. You can access every feature on the pedal and save/load presets easily with the Web Editor, so that’s how I create sounds with it. It’s the only delay on my board and capably handles all my needs. If you haven’t yet seen it, watch Mark Johnston’s video on the Raster 2. It’s an hour long deep drive into every facet of the pedal and it’s helped me when I experiment with what the Raster can do. Hope that helps!

For the Rasta 2, how do you have an aux switch or a mid pedal to access presets on the fly ? Also, is there a way to set the BPM on the web app?
@@JJT007hero hey James! I use a Morningstar MC-8 MIDI controller to switch presets on the Raster 2. But you can access four presets on the pedals main controls with a push button. I’m pretty sure Red Panda also makes a remote you could use to switch presets. I know the Web Editor let’s you save every parameter, including the tempo. I have my pedal setup to sync to MIDI clock to all my delay and modulation sounds are in time with each other.
Have a Raster 2 somewhere lost in the mail here in the US. It will be joined with an OBNE Ramper. Love that those were your top 2.

Pladask Elektrisk Baklengs was my only purchase last year, but it's definitely in the top 5 among my 50+ pedals. i held out for so long getting a reverse/granular delay, but it was so worth the wait. it has everything you'd want in granular delay-stretching/pitching and looping and nothing superfluous that would make it bigger and more complicated. of course in this golden age you can get that too (for a price) but the Baklengs is perfect as it is.
Pladask makes great pedals. I owned a Tåken a long time ago. It was rad. Baklengs definitely looks like a super unique and cool pedal. I love granular delays and reverse delays, so it sounds like a win win to me 😊
Damn that wurm tone was good! Not what you think of when you think HM-2 at all, a really unique bite, and would sit so well in a mix. Killer, man.

I love both the Astral Destiny and KMA Cirrus. Terrific ambient machines. And yeah, John/EAE is a wizard when it comes to dirt pedals. I would love to check out a Halberd at some point as well. Seems like a really unique drive pedal.

This is amazing! I'm now a subscriber, I've watched this video several times. I've also watched 2020, 2019, 2018, and more! I have some questions, please can you help and also anyone from the group here: I'm changing out my rig, I have too many large, very confusing, menu diving pedals. Because of this review I already changed out my Space Reverb for the EarthQuaker Astral Destiny !--amazing thanks. I have on order: Old Blood Noise Endeavors Expression Ramper :). I also have a Eventide Pitchfactor----I use mostly for lower octave with fuzz and expression pedal whammy stuff (I'm going to get the SolidGoldFX Lysis MkII and the Boss SY-200---will these be a good replacement for the Pitchfactor? I have a Strymon Timeline delay, it's too big and not easy to change effects on the fly, great sound though. I want to change this to a delay pedal that's super easy to use, but with other great features, so more than just delay----I was thinking of SolidGoldFX Lysis MkII or REd Panda Raster 2???? what do you think? or are there some other good small, fun, simple delay pedals (under $300) that you can suggest?

I ordered the OBNE Expression Ramper from Russo's as they have a black one, its AWESOME! It's a werid analog oscillating flanger with a DM2W, (have half assed demos on my channel for now) a trippy vibrato with a Rainbow Machine, and YOU HAVE to use it with the TRANSMISSER! Happy you enjoyed the video. Yeah, the EMIII can get into DMM territory if you roll back the tone a bit and maybe add a hint of slow modulation. I'm not saying it's gonna nail DMM tones, but it can definitely do convincing analog-voiced sounds.

Gotta agree with you on the Red Panda Raster, so when you played it what other pedals if any. apart from the wah/vol pedal, did you use? sounded great.
Happy you dig the Raster 2! I didn't use a wah/vol pedal. It's an expression pedal that's next to it. Used that to change the intervals of the pitch-shifting in the final lead. Other than that I used a bit of fuzz from the Jackson Audio Fuzz for the faux bass-synth lines and a touch of reverb from the Avalanche Run just to tie everything together. I recommend you check out the full Raster 2 demo on my channel, it explains it all in-depth 😊

@@thepedalzone I'm not on your level with how well you can manipulate these effects, but the astral destiny seemed to add another amazing dimension to the already insanely cool stuff the microcosm does. I'd definitely suggest giving it a whirl.

Does anyone else have a sound problem with Sunlight? When I engage it, it just seems to not work well with my other pedals at all. It will sound waaay louder than what its set to and I just don't get it. If anyone can refer me to some forums or something, I'd appreciate it.
Sadly I didn't get to play as many as I would've liked but my favorite was the Benson Germanium fuzz. Once it got on my board I don't think I'll be coming off.
Chris Benson definitely knows a thing or two about tone. Been drooling over his amps for ages, and his pedals look and sound just as intriguing.
@@thepedalzone I'm a Tone hound and I love his stuff. His preamp is amazing. The overdrive bridges into fuzz territory when cranked. And to be honest I use fuzz way more than I do overdrive so it's perfect for me

Microcosm was on my list last year 😊 CXM technically did get released last year, but it didn’t get its big roll out before 2021. I got my hands on it in the beginning of 2021
