- The year is coming to a close, which means we're winding down here at The Pedal Zone. But hey, dry your eyes, my sonic soldier, there's nothing to be sad about. This also means that we get to look back at some of the best pedals to be released this year. And what an amazing pedal year it's been. So here they are, my top 10 favorite guitar pedals of 2018.

Well, to be fair, I honestly don’t know if Thermae would have made the list even if I had demoed it. It’s one of the most intense love/hate relationships I’ve had with a pedal. One day it’s the best pedal ever and the next day it’s the worst. It’s difficult to get the same result twice with that pedal, which it took me some time to accept. But I’ve sorta learned to roll with its randomness. There’s beauty in that as well. But the sounds it makes are 100% gorgeous and super unique 👌

I was very much looking forward to this video and the only disappointment I had was with TH-cam not giving me proper notification about it even though I have set up my account for it. Congratulations on another great year brother on the pedal zone brother. I don’t see all your episodes but when I do pop in it is a real treat....Some of my favourites for the year: in the above 300 dollar mark (Aust dollar) “boutique” pedal world I’m really digging the Mr Black Twin Lazers. I know you love stereo mode pedals so this one should be on your list to check out. In terms of a 200 dollar more run of the mill pedal I’m in love with The Keeley Verb o Trem. It’s compact, it’s tight, but man it packs a punch. Although it doesn’t have a useful plate reverb, it’s 3 trem/vib settings has meant it’s replaced my Flint at least temporarily. With so many plate treats in the last years, I probably just need a break. The other pedal to mention (and I’m not sure when it was released) but I bought it this year, so hey I’m down, is the digitech Freqout. What a pedal. In terms of pedal disappointments, I’m gonna have to go with the Stone Deaf Kliptonite. Perhaps I needed to spend more time with it, but I found it inconsistent and as such limiting and annoying. It is also very big for a pedal that ain’t gonna get much use for a set. A case could be made for having it as a worthy studio tool. Cheers pedal freaks - see you down the dusty pedal track sometime.

It’s a killer vibrato pedal. One of the very best I’ve ever played. But we’ve just been spoiled for choice this year when it comes to great pedals. Stefan, as always your enthusiasm is contagious, you get me so psyched to do weird things with gear. I was lucky enough to score an Enzo, and I agree- its lights out. So many amazing pedals out this year, it must have been very difficult to pick just ten. I really want to check out the Dweller, the fact that it's a whole new effect is compelling as hell. The Tensor deserves mention, as does The Thermae. I would also really like to get my paws on that Parabola, that preamp sounds so freakin good. I can only imagine how great it would sound driven by the pre-amp of a Deluxe Memory Man. An honorable sleeper mention, for me, is the EHX OP Amp Muff- my kind of muff and really hard to find a good vintage one, so the fact that I got the reissue for about sixty bucks was so rad. Really need a windfall of cash to even get a quarter of the cool new pedals being put out.
Oh yeah, everything KMA does looks fantastic.
The riffs you played for the Parabola remind me so much of an instrumental song in the movie Boys Don't Cry. Nobody can demonstrate what a pedal is capable of better than you.

Caroline Meteore reverb was a great addition to my rig this year. Used tastefully and sparingly, it's an awesome secret weapon!

I'm going with the selfish version. My favorite pedal releases of 2018 were each time a warehouse released a pedal to be shipped to me.
And each time, there was much rejoicing.

I love my EQD Westwood and Night Wire. Also the new Subdecay Octave Theory is amazing

I would have to say that the Red Panda Tensor is my favorite this year. I bought the Enzo about a month ago and I like it more and more every day. But the Tensor is outstanding!
I also really want a Tensor. I only tried it briefly when I visited EQD back in August. Jamie Stillman had it, and it seemed like it was a lot of fun 👍 Happy to hear you dig Enzo as well. Such an inspiring device ❤️

ThePedalZone I’m looking for some kind of ambient/ethereal pedal (so something very similar to the Afterneath). Maybe an OBNE procession or darkstar? I’ve already got a Polymoon, so I’m not sure where to go next
Sure, OBNE Procession and Dark Star are great textural reverbs. Procession is more airy and open though, whereas Dark Star is very "dark" and drone-like. So it all depends on what flavour you need. Could also be worth checking out the EQD Transmisser, if you want something a la the Afterneath but a bit more modulated. You could also go all the way and get the Meris Mercury7. Was born to be paired with the Polymoon ☺👍
Meris really inspirered me this year ... Enzo is not the easiest pedal though ;)

I think Enzo can be as simple or as involved as you like. If you just stick to what you see on the front to begin with, and ignore all the hidden ALT controls, then it's pretty simple to grasp what everything does and how they affect each other. When you have that under control, you can begin to mess with the ALT controls. But yeah, Enzo can be a bit like learning a new instrument. It's worth the time investment though. Just such a great pedal. Happy you like it ❤

Stefan. Could you review the EHX Voice Box? There are no good reviews on this pedal and it's been there for over a decade.
You made the menris sound so much better than other youtubers. Not trying to blast them, but sometimes a pedal requires more than slapping the pedal on, dialing randomly, and force feeding pentatonic runs. It sounded really nice

how does the Navigator compare to the Fairfax meet Maude? looking for a huge sounding modulated delay for lead melody lines and stuff like that. Which do u prefer?
The Fairfield Meet Maude is a 100% Analog Delay. It’s very dark, murky, lo-fi and has a very wobbly tape-like modulation. A delay full of murky mojo. Navigator is a digital delay with an analog dry path. It has extensive controls which gives you control over the delay tone, dial delay heads and a wide modulation section. So you can create everything from super pristine digital dual delays to soupy atmospheric analog-sounding echoes. I recommend you watch my demos of them on my channel, that should help you decide. I have demos of both of them. For my personal musical context, I would go with the Navigator every time, but my context probably isn’t the same as yours. But if you want murky smeary ambience, then go for the Fairfield. If you want a versatile box of echoes that’ll do any usable delay tone imaginable, then go for the Navigator 👍

Hey Stefan, I have a Caroline Guitar Co Kilobyte Delay what would be a good 2nd delay pedal to supplement this one and my Walrus Audio Fathom Reverb?
I would personally pair it with another delay that is more clean and pristine, since Kilobyte covers the analog-like sounds very well. So I would probably go for something like an EarthQuaker Devices Avalanche Run or Emma Electronic Navigator. That’s what I usually pair it with 😊👌

Seek4Truth - The “best” is always subjective. The best for me personally is the Meris Mercury7. But all the ones you’re considering are great reverbs, so really dive in and study the features they have, and hold that up against the features you feel you need to make your music. That should make your decision easier 😊
What a year for pedals! The Westwood, Dweller and Enzo are my favorites (haven't had a chance to try the Dark World yet but I'll probably love it 😆)
A bit off topic: have you tried the Smallsound/Bigsound Mini? Got a hold of one on Black Friday and it's AMAZING.

It's cool you mentioned the CIOKS DC7. That power supply has got to be the new standard for excellence. There is nothing else on the market with that kind of versatility and power in such a compact unit. Hopefully more companies will see this aggressive move from CIOKS and try their hand at pushing the envelope too. Competition is good. I think it's pronounced 'Chocks' though.
I totally agree. This is the best PSU currently on the market. Extremely high quality and so full-featured. And yeah, you're right about the pronunciation. I've just always pronounced it like it's spelled, and it's a hard habit to break 😉

@@thepedalzone Chris from Jptr Fx is a really nice guy, I dig his stuff! I hope you'll get around to checking all his pedals out, especially the Super Weirdo - that thing is crazy. :D EAE is well worth your time, aswell, I'd say. The Sending is easily among my favorite delays ever.
Honorable mention I forgot earlier: Dwarfcraft Devices Grazer, though I'm not sure it was released in 2018. Might have been 2017. XD

I really hope you get your hands on the Electroman Mkii from Solid Gold FX.
It's my favorite delay of the year, as it has the effects of the Kilobyte, with more options, and a great mod option.
I have that one already. Will have a demo ready of it early next month. It’s a great delay pedal 👍
Where is the best place to put an Enzo on a pedalboard? Before your drives? After drives and before reverb and Delay?
Highly recommend you place it as the first thing in your chain (after tuner of course). Enzo needs a strong and clean input signal to track to its best ability 👍

Naaah, I just stick to pedals. That’s the stuff I’m passionate about 😊 But yeah, it’s a limited edition Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue 65. Really great amp. One of the best clean sounds I’ve ever heard 👌
