2017+ Chrysler Pacifica Transmission Reset: Improve those harsh shifts

  • I walk you through how to clear the adaptive programming in the ZF 9 speed transmissions used in 2017+ Chrysler Pacifica. Doing this periodically has greatly improved the shifting in my Chrysler Pacifica.
    I believe the factory "adaptive" programming is too aggressive and has degrades shift quality over time. Clearing these adaptive parameters out gets you back to original shift parameters and smoother shifts.

    I just watched this video and can't wait to try it on my 2018 Pacifica. I use my car to tow a utility trailer, and noticed the hard shifting after I began doing that. It makes sense that the transmission is trying to compensate for the extra weight, then gets out of whack when the weight is gone. Thanks so much for the tip.

    Yes! thank you so much for this video. I am over 100k miles now in my 2015 Chrysler 200, and felt my shifting getting really harsh recently. I took it through an automatic wash and while it was rolling, I shifted from neutral to drive. when I turned the car off to vacuum, I was shocked and surprised to have my dashboard light up like a Christmas tree. Check light engine turned on with "CAN C BUS connection failure" and Transmission service Required error. My car was stuck in 4th gear until I turned it off for a few minutes. Once turned on again only the Check engine light was on, and would not shift out of 4th gear. I completed this step you have provided and all is working again. Check light turned off, and car is now shifting even smoother than before. I was about to take this car into service. I will keep an eye on it to see if the issues return, as I know I am over 100k miles and working on those maintenance steps already.
    Thank you so much again!

    Thank you for posting this. I have a 2019 Pacifica and I hate this predictive transmission. I had the dealership reset it once. What happens with mine is that the car does not want to accelerate. Last time I had this issue the dealership thoroughly checked over my car and cannot find anything wrong. Last resort was to reset the transmission. Once they did that everything was fine. That was about a year ago. Now I'm finding it needs to be reset again. I will give this a try with your instructions.

      I test drove a 2017 Pacifica with the dealer sitting beside me. It did the HARD SHIFT several times during the drive. I told the dealer no thanks because the transmission
      is going out. The dealer called me the next day and said they would pay for a new tranny or knock off the cost of a new tranny if I wanted to deal with it. I saw this video that night and went back to the dealer and did what was said here and went for another test drive. The transmission shifted perfect and has been for nearly a year.So because of this three minute fix I

    I’ve just tried this for a second time, first time didn’t seem to make a difference. We have a 17 Pacifica limited and the shifting isn’t awful yet, but it isn’t smooth. This issue started just under 30k miles, we are the original owners. So disappointed in this van. We’ve replaced both batteries too around 18k miles for almost 1k. I’m so tired of this stuff.
    I appreciate you working out a solution, it’s clear that Chrysler doesn’t care.

    • @TheLawnEngineer
      @TheLawnEngineer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately batteries don’t last based on miles, it’s more time based. Automotive batteries are not made to the same specifications they use to, most of them don’t last no matter the auto manufacturer.
      The transmission tuning is 100% on Chrysler, they should recall these vehicles.

    I own a 2021 Pacifica FWD with the same issues. Only have 18000km on it. On top of this, we had one instance where the transmission was upshifting and downshifting repeatedly for 10 seconds trying to cruise at 38km/hr in a school zone. Took it to the dealership and they flashed the PCM last week. So far so good, but will have to wait and see. Good learning from your video for personal knowledge if it happens to me again!

    • @apkakazai9611
      @apkakazai9611 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheLawnEngineer I feel like Chrysler won't do a recall until this issue causes a catastrophic failure to the transmission and an accident/injury/death. Until now, I don't think it has, so Chrysler has gotten away with just TSBs for the transmission. My '12 Dodge Journey had similar transmission software issues that was resolved at the Dealership for the life of the vehicle, but not sure why the Pacificas will continuously have this issue even after resetting the software.

    • @TheLawnEngineer
      @TheLawnEngineer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@apkakazai9611 yes, you are probably correct. It reminds me of the old sports saying “more games are lost than one.” If they could make a transmission computer that doesn’t make shifting terrible they would probably be a more successful company. Great video. I wasn't aware of the adaptive shifting programming. I actually had brought this into a dealership for a brake line issue and explained the transmission issue and they weren't able to reproduce anything and weren't aware of any issues. My wife and I often alternate which vehicles we drive, I wonder if that makes the algorithm get even more messed up due to the inconsistent driving styles.

    • @TheLawnEngineer
      @TheLawnEngineer  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, switching drivers can make the shifting worse more quickly. Obviously, the programming/hardware isn't very good if this happens...most every vehicle is driven by more than one person. Anyway, this reset should help you mitigate the poor shifting.

It seems like it suddenly thinks I'm in neutral even though i didn't do anything. It goes away when i put it into park and then back into drive. Could this be fixed by doing this reset? This reset might fix your problem. The shifting parameters may have gotten so far out of range that the trans is getting stuck between gears.

      Unfortunately there is no noise or visual indication that the reset of the transmission control module (TCM) was initiated. As long as you are cycling the ignition to "off" before releasing the gas pedal you should be good.
      Also note, that this procedure clears the adaptions the TCM has made to return to the initial tuning, it will not clear all trouble codes. You will need a scan tool to clear the rouble codes. If you reset the TCM every couple of weeks you should be able to prevent the code from reappearing.

      We have a 100+ lb dog also. We
      Love the Sto-N-Go seats for the middle row captain’s chairs. We leave one down for our dog, and usually have his big dog bed there. It’s great for trips, as he can lay down, sit up, or even get to the back seat if he wants. When we get where we’re going, we can then pop the seats up and we can all ride together with family.
      Just a great feature that no other van has. Our last Honda van required the heavy seats to be removed, and the floor wasn’t flat and smooth underneath (latches sticking up). We left them in the garage, which took up space. Then, when we got to our destination, we didn’t have seats for family to ride with us.
      So, IMHO, the seats are a great selling point unmatched by others.
      Worth it!

    It worked for as well but it starts acting weird after about a week or two that’s probably because I put on a lot of miles frequently

      That is normal, have to continue to reset on regular basis. Thanks for checking in and sharing your experience.

    My car shuts off before that 2 minutes is over. Does that mean it's not getting the full effect of this?

    • @TheLawnEngineer
      @TheLawnEngineer  หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s normal, it doesn’t affect the reset.

    When you let it sit for two minutes does that mean you can’t open the door or anything like that for the 2 minutes?

    • @TheLawnEngineer
      @TheLawnEngineer  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you can open the door, just don’t turn the ignition on in the 2 minutes

    Typically setting off the engagement of the automatic e-brake by opening a door in gear is what starts a cycle of clunky shifting
    Edit:. I've noticed if you try and take off before the car os fully on sets it into a spiral as we..

    When I go to turn mine off after the 10 seconds it starts the van. The only way it won’t start it is if I release the brake before I try to turn it off. Am I doing something wrong

    • @TheLawnEngineer
      @TheLawnEngineer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you should never touch the brake pedal during the reset, only the gas pedal.

    How do you know all this stuff?
    Our Pacifica has had all these issues and it's good to know there's a resource before running it to the dealer every time

      I guess it’s from a youth of wrenching on cars and an education and career in mechanical engineering…oh yeah and living with a Pacifica 🙃

      @@TheLawnEngineer the transmission reset worked like a charm. Was worried it was going out as it would be a heavy thud when we shifted and it's not doing that anymore.
