    This has bugged us for years on our 2017 Pacifica. Our dealer/service dept was useless when we took it in on 2 occasions and we were charged for service that pretty much accomplished nothing. It seems to happen at least once a week, at around 15 mph. That said, we're going to be going back to Honda or Toyota for our next family vehicle.

    • @TheLawnEngineer

      It is one of the most frustrating things in life, a vehicle that has issues...and a dealer that isn't helpful. I have run into this over the years and I always wonder if they are really that incompetent or if its all an act.
      I mitigate this shifting issue (I agree 15mph is the worst) by resetting the transmission control module about once a month. th-cam.com/video/k5lQmHBBvQA/w-d-xo.html
      Unfortunately the Honda Odyssey has the same ZF 9 speed transmission and had very similar issues. I have yet to find a good resource to accurately depict a vehicle's reliability. It's almost like you have to get knee deep in forums for each vehicle that you are considering and see what problems people are having.

    Thank you very much for taking your time to help others, specially saving time and $$. I don't have a pacifica atm but planning to buy one soon (probably a 2018). I been reading different comments about issues, one that makes me be worried is the one that driving on the hwy, the car stalls..., did you ever expericenced something related? Looks like if your vin number doesn't have a recall, is a "good sign" but you never know. Is a shame that this practical vehicle has some recalls that can be "dangerous".

    • @TheLawnEngineer
      @TheLawnEngineer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The stalling is related to the transmission shifting. Resetting the TCM regularly will prevent the shifting for getting so bad it causes stalling.

    My van has always done that bad shift, but when it had 25k, I was in bumper to bumper traffic when it started doing the jumps, but it got stuck in that gear, It was super hard to accelerate under 40 mph. So I pulled over and tried turning it on and off but the van wouldn’t let me start it. I was trying to get it started again by opening the doors when I turned it off and eventually it turned back on, however, it remained stuck in gear all the way to the job (I use my van for work but I don’t max the payload. I was in a hurry to get to the job, and the transmission would not accelerate fast 😂) it smelled Burt all the way, so I was expecting my van not to turn on after my job was over, but if worked perfectly fine. And it has never done that super bad shift that it locks in gear. That’s the closest I’ve ever been to calling a tow truck, but 8th time starting it was the charm. My buddies thought I was purposely driving slow/ but I just couldn’t accelerate. My van is now on 165k miles and it still does the bad shifts and I tried taking it to the dealer about the transmission problem but “it’s a software issue” I thought they had their head in their a….

    Your video on resetting the memory saved me a ton if headache.
    Now my passenger sliding door as reverted to an old school sliding door. Trying to power slide it results in it beeping 3 times and not moving. I'm thinking it's probably a code issue that needs to be flashed.

    • @TheLawnEngineer

      Before taking it in, I would try disconnecting the negative battery cable on the main the auxiliary (if you have auto start/stop). Let it sit for a few minutes without power, this will reset the sliding door modules. Reconnect the batteries and there is a good chance your doors will be back in operation.

    have you had any problems with the auto/start stop? i went to start it one day and it wouldn’t start on the first attempt, dash lit up with all codes, once it started (on the second attempt) and since then it says the auto start stop is unavailable. it occasionally has a hard time starting. meaning when i hit the button it doesn’t start right up it’s kind of electrically clunky and takes a moment longer to start! but it always does on the first push. i have heard an occasional clunking sound in the engine and the rear brake assist is not available. i’m unsure if these are all related? would love your thoughts.

    • @TheLawnEngineer
      @TheLawnEngineer  ปีที่แล้ว

      My Pacifica does not have the auto start/stop so I do not have personal experience. However, it sounds like your aux. battery needs to be replaced. The models with start/stop have two batteries, the large main one and another smaller one that is dedicated to powering the starter motor.

  • @johnbogden6411
    @johnbogden6411 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the videos. A few questions. 1) Do you think allowing only one driver will help since the TCM does not have to learn the habits of other drivers? 2) Once the TCM is reset can there be some initial hard shifts as the TCM re-learns? I ask because my son drove the vehicle the night before I did and it was hard shifting frequently the next day when I drove it. I reset the TCM, had a few minor bumps then it seemed to smooth out. I intentionally drove through the center of town with a lot of start and stops and had no issues. In fact, the shifts were fairly smooth for about an hour of driving. I then intentionally accelerated quickly and noticed a slight bump on the downshift. Seems like once it learns my driving habits I have to maintain those habits (slow, gentle accelerations).

    • @TheLawnEngineer
      @TheLawnEngineer  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don’t know for sure because I’ve never studied the actual code used. But all of your points are valid. I have noticed a few less than ideal shifts directly after a reset and then smooths out. Also, it does seem to like slow smooth acceleration the best and different drivers can have wildly different styles.
      I believe the root cause of the issues on this system has something to do with the feedback sensors are giving the computer. They are either not accurate enough or don’t sample frequently enough to provide good direction to the computer. The computer then is making changes based on erroneous data and the mistakes add up over time compounded into an almost undrivable state.

    • @johnbogden6411
      @johnbogden6411 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheLawnEngineer i can see where a slow sample rate from the sensors would paint an erroneous picture for the computer. If there are not enough data points, the computer would have to interpolate; if it is even capable. Like trying to watch a pixelating TV and understand what is happening. You won't have an accurate picture

    • @TheLawnEngineer

      I would start with the transmission reset, if the shifts get bad enough it will throw the light.
      For the idle I have this video as a starting point.
      th-cam.com/video/jS3nRZAaUFk/w-d-xo.html
      Unfortunately it sounds like the root cause of your poor idle may be beyond what I cover in that video. I have heard of a few cases of low fuel pressure due to corrosion on the fuel pump connectors. Anyway a decent scan tool can be used to troubleshoot this in short order (look at fuel rail pressure). The generic codes are difficult to get a diagnosis from.

    Places are now offering a transmission flush and changing out fluids using a machine (Valvoline, PepBoys, even Walmart). I've watched your partial exchange ) remove driver front wheel AND measuring actual (exact) amount to change out. AMSOIL is offering a compatible ATF; thoughts on using Amsoil's alternative fluids (synthetic). Curious if you think the new exchange using a system designed by Valvoline is the easier/better option? I used the Coolant flush for my 2017 Pacifica

    • @TheLawnEngineer
      @TheLawnEngineer  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I used AMSOIL in my drain and fill video. I think they make great lubricants.
      I’m not a fan of a transmission flush. Unless it is done early and often. The friction material from the clutch packs becomes dispersed in the fluid and modifies its properties. If all the fluid is exchanged at one time it often causes transmissions to slip.

      @TheLawnEngineer purchased 5 quarts (just in case) Amsoil; waiting for delivery. Level ground, both front wheels lifted (driver side removed) or should I have the passenger side lifted slightly higher to drain fluid out? Currently working on the intake cleaning video and changing all fluids, spark plugs, etc.
      Check engine light is on (secondary DTC's) 1) P0440: General Evap System Failure
      2) P0456 Evap System small leak
      3) C1252-92 vacuum pump circuit performance- performance or incorrect operation
      4) C1246-1C Vacuum Pressure Sensor Supply- circuit voltage out of range.
      Just purchased and check engine light comes on on the ride home from "dealer". Suspect they reset codes before I bought (no proof).

    I just got my transmission replaced on my 2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Tour XL because when put into gear a loud violent metal grinding noise coming from inside the transmission, and vehicle stopped moving entirely. When the vehicle was started the RPM's jump without touching the gas pedal. I had to get it towed, but luckily it was under warranty still, and got the entire transmission replaced. I just got a 2017 pacifica and as u say the trans acted a bit wonky so I took ur idea and did a reset. Better. Than I took it back to the dealer and drove around with a mechanic who used to rebuild transmissions. Of course the van performed performed perfectly for him. He explained the adaptive soft wear and told me I could try a reboot by disconnecting the battery and shorting the leads together and wait five minutes than reconnect and start it up. So I discovered the second battery and disconnected that also when I found there was still spark when shorting the main battery leads. So it seems good after a few days. What do u think?

    We have a 2017 Pacifica that my wife usually drives, but when I drive it, it does this little bucking BS occasionally. When it happens, my wife comments that it happens to her, too, but not very often. Your description of the problem makes sense to me if you fold in different drivers as a variable. The controller is making changes based on the main driver's habits and then receives inputs based on those of another driver. What do you think? Could the settings for habits of one driver cause these issues more often? We have not been dissatisfied with the performance of the vehicle at all, and this issue occurs only once in a great while. The vehicle has only 77k miles.

    • @TheLawnEngineer

      I can’t confirm that, 2017-2020 is the 1st generation of the new Pacifica. I suspect the issue was the capability of the transmission control module which usually doesn’t get updated until a redesign/refresh that happened for the 2021 model year.
      Chrysler may have updated it before the scheduled refresh because of this issue but I can’t find any info on that.

Shortly after I realized my van will not go into park the first drive of the day until I drive it for 10 mins or more. When I try to put it into park it automatically goes into neutral and the dashboard says "Service trans press break when stopped key off engine to engage park". • @TheLawnEngineer

      @@nichellerozelle1975 I agree with that dealerships assessment, it sounds like a valve is sticking until it warms up after ~10 mins of operation.
      This is not the part I was referring to. I was referring to the Bosch computer (Transmission Control Module) that is used to send the control signals to that valve body. The valve body is a set of solenoid valves that physical move to control the flow of fluid inside the transmission.

  • @abelincoln78
    @abelincoln78 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    My understanding is these transmissions have what are known as “dog” clutches. This was in a move to make everything fit in such a small size. I’ve been in a position to consider one of these years ago, but spoiler alert we decided not to. If anyone is wondering, in a clutch like this instead of using friction and reaction disks like a normal clutch it literally meshes two gear sets, or dogs. The main advantage of this clutch is rather than relying on coefficient of friction and pressure all you need to worry about is the strength of the metal-to-metal interface. The result is a clutch of maybe half the axial length not counting piston with a shorter tolerance stack up which helps further shorten the clutch. Sometimes you really do only need 5 or 10 millimeters. Cue this psycho idea.
    There is however a big down side to a dog clutch. When meshing the two sides of these gears together you HAVE to know the relative speed between them. This seems simple but if you have enough error in your speeds it is going to shift with a bang. I’m fairly confident that at least in the random hard shift department this is the problem. Whatever method they’re using to measure relative speed between or even position of the dogs isn’t good enough. The trim must be an attempt to overcome speed uncertainty but it could be pretty easy for something like that to go into wind up.

    • @TheLawnEngineer
      @TheLawnEngineer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think your summary is spot on, couldn’t use regular clutches and fit in 9 speeds. The interesting part is, the base tune is pretty smooth. The problem arises when the adaptions start happening. It might be from as you mentioned, poor speed feedback so the adaptions are being made to poor data. It’s too bad we can’t just turn off the adaptions

    Could you possibly shed some light?
    This is a bunny trail, from the shifting issue you had on your 2017. Your story of clearing the module and our issue with the TCM has me wondering if you might be on to a possible mitigation.
    We bought a 2020 Pacifica Limited, 79,000 miles, 35 days ago. Stalled at 30mph.
    It started up, in apx 15 minutes.
    Mechanic read the codes, said the TCM wasn't communicating well, with the other modules and shut down. He said the module connections on the battery were loose and tightened them. It stalled again 10 days later.
    The Chrysler service center was able to get codes, as it stalled for them. The computer codes, from the previous owner and since we bought it tell a story of a long-term problem.
    According to the computer history the mechanic (of the previous owner) reprogrammed the computer and it was sold to our used car dealer.
    The Chrysler mechanic said his educated guess was that everything pointed to replacing the TCM that all the other computer modules couldn't communicate with.
    This entire time I have been in contact with the dealer, from which we bought the van. Yesterday, with the latest update of long term stalling issues, covered up with reprogramming, and the mechanic's educated guess for a fix, they asked us to bring the van back to them. They are going to have their Chrysler guy look at it.
    Thank you, for your time and insight.

    These dealerships don't want to do warranty work. If you have a intermittent problem good luck they want to keep your vehicle to try and find it they say after a few days the cannot make it do it. You get it back home and the next day it does it. I think it does it they don't know were to start. Myself a car today is a computer on wheels. Like your home computer it starts to mess up and you do a restart or reboot and it works fine again. Or sometimes a system restore fixes the problem. If you have a problem like this they should do a reboot of the computer when you have a intermittent problem. It solved my problem with the fob not detected at times. After like 3 times taking it to the dealer and them keeping it a few days and not finding the problem. After the 3rd time I asked for a computer reboot. I stayed in the car they hooked it up to the computer that goes to the factory which tested everything. The lights would cycle, windows up and down, everthing you would use and some you never though of. It took about 30 minutes or so why the tech just sat in a chair. When it was all said and done it was a bad fob. They reprogrammed a new key fob and it fixed all the problems I was having. It was under warranty even. To get them to do this was like pulling teeth. The scan tool they could not find anything. That doesn't mean something is wrong when you have a intermittent problem.

      It’s pretty sad that the ‘21s still have the same problem.

      You are 100% correct for most every transmission but this situation is slightly different.
      There is something wrong with the control system on this transmission. I suspect the sample rate for the feedback is not sufficient to accurate measure what's really going on the with transmission. The control system then adapts the parameters to erroneous data and shifting gets worse and worse.
      The control hardware is simply not good enough for this trans and that is why software updates can't fix it.
      I did the first fluid change on this trans and the fluid was nearly clear no clutch material.

      I did have it updated twice. It helped for a month but then went back to its old ways.
