Dear Mr. Lawnmower Engineer, you just saved me thousands that Chrysler told me it was likely going to cost with your "trick." I did it last night, and today the car drives again as new instead of rattling like a toolbox. Phew! Thanks a lot. You’re a good man.
Thank you so much. I just had this happen to me at 11am on Good Friday as we were getting on the highway in central Florida to drive 1300 miles home to Northern Michigan. Got the engine light and limp mode got it to a Chrysler dealership and they said with holiday they were slammed and earliest they could look at it was maybe Saturday if not Monday. I was nearly ready to trade it in for a new car when I found this video. I got in, did it, and drive off the lot 1300 miles home. Engine light went away a few hours later. Told my neighbor about it when we arrived 25 hours later (like 20mins ago)and he said a coworker just had the same in his Pacifica and being a shade tree mechanic, he pulled the trans and couldn’t get stuff back together and ended up trading the car in on a trailer- the service guy told him “you just needed to reset the TCM, should have brought it to us”.
I had possibly the world's highest mileage 2017 Pacifica and I would like to share a couple insights. Purchased new for full-time rural Auto parts delivery 500 miles a day, 120,000 miles per year. I sold it with 511,000 miles. I did not have your particular transmission problem, although around 135,000 miles I started hearing a whining sound as it shifted. Ask the dealer and they said it's lifetime transmission fluid so you shouldn't touch it. I disregarded this and had an independent shop change the fluid which solved the whining problem. At 187,000 mi the hard shifting began. Very significant thud from second into third gear usually in parking lots or accelerating slowly from a traffic light. Feels like you're being rear-ended. If you accelerate briskly, it doesn't do this so I learned to mitigate. I continue changing the oil every 50,000 miles and the original transmission was preventively replaced at 450,000 miles because I was going on vacation towing my boat and didn't want it ruined! The drivetrain on these cars can be incredibly solid. I sold it at 511,000 mi with the original engine which was not burning any considerable amount of oil and still had great power. One mistake I made was not changing the oil more often. With 10,000 MI intervals, I started having problems with the camshaft position sensor around 220,000 miles. As I would get toward the end of my 10K oil change interval, the car would start to run rough vibrating and losing power. I would change the oil, run an anti-gunk formula and it would solve the problem until I put more miles on it. So the sensors were becoming tarnished. Had it replaced a couple times but it would always get worse again until I took it to the dealer and they replaced both the sensor and the phasers. I would recommend oil changes between 5 and 7,500 MI. I'm sorry you are having this issue though and I hope eventually there is a better solution. Replacing the entire transmission so often doesn't work out well. The second transmission I put in from a used van and problems with it and only 83,000 total miles between the two vehicles. Good luck!
Awesome information, thanks for sharing. The hard shifting you explained at 187,000 miles is what most of us are experiencing much sooner and the TCM reset helps mitigate. Also, I completely agree that 10,000 miles is too long for the oil change. I shoot for 6k but I'm not ultra strict on that.
There are probably scores of vehicles of all makes and models that bit the dust because of the lie ‘you don’t have to change the transmission fluid; it’s lifetime’.
Yep. Gotta change the motor oil at least every 5K miles no matter what anybody says about longer intervals. As Scotty says: ‘oil is cheap, engines are expensive.’
I have a 2019 and this video saved me big time! My son was stuck on the side of the highway with a check engine light and many other warnings alerts. He wasn't able to put it in drive anymore. This reset fixed it all! Thanks so much for sharing!
Thank you so much. My dealer told me it wasn't a problem until right after my warranty was out and then they wanted me to bring it in. I'll be trying this right now.
Dealer also told me the valvetrain knocking was just normal valve noise. Took it to an independent and had the engine replaced under an extended warranty. 100% coverage for a brand new OEM Pentastar. We all have to stay educated and fight for ourselves because some dealerships won't do it for whatever reason(s).
Thanks for the info. Last week my 2018 Pacifica started rough shifting. The first time it did it so hard I thought the driver behind me rear-ended me. Will definitely give this a try.
You have been very helpful to me and my 2017 Chrysler Pacifica @ 86,500 mi. Thank You!! But now I have a power steering gear box problem, and haven't found a video on that yet. The part is on backorder. Cars were so much simpler in the 70s and 80s 😂
You're welcome, thanks for checking in. Oh no, that stinks with the power steering. Fortunately, I have not had an issue with that system yet. Is it the whole steering rack?
My wife is complaining about her transmission slipping today and was going to take it into the shop and then I did some research and seeing this and I did exactly what you said in that works she said that she was amazing can't believe that it worked FYI mine is a 2020 Voyager but same thing same issues
Hello!I wrote to you in the other video saying the reset worked once but then I kept having problems shifting every couple of weeks. I finally managed to find a good Chrysler dealer in NY and they updated the CPU and now it works perfectly. I said a good dealer because others asked me for $170 for the scan and $400 for the update but this one said it was a problem with Chrysler and did it for free. It seems there is a big issue with te Pacifica and the transmission, specifically with hybrids. However, I still love the car.
Worked like a charm. We have a 2019 and the transmission has been acting up. My wife used it today and the check engine light came on and it wouldn't go above 30 she said. I found this video, did the reset and viola everything is fine.
I have a 2017 with the same issue. Watched your original video for the reset fix, and I now do it about once a month. It does stop the hard shifts, just wish there was a permanent fix like pulling the small power connector to disable the problematic start/stop “feature”. I appreciate you posting this as well as the update, love my van otherwise.
I’m noticing some subtle weird/abnormal shifts at low speeds on our ‘19 Pacifica. I’ll try resetting the transmission module back to its original setting and will let you know. Thank you again, you are the best!
Have been using this on my Pacy for 2 years, stumbled on this on a forum for BMW transmissions which said it also works for Chrysler 9-speeds, and it does. What I am not sure is what this does vs. update to base transmission software updates installed. I have had my transmission software updated 4 times at the dealer, 3 before I learned this technique and 1 after. I don't fully have confidence in the Dealer as I had to pay $100 for each trans software update. The Dealer each time said a 'new release' would fix the issues I had and it did have slightly different issues each time - but I argued the van should COME with working transmission software and any subsequent updates should be free or covered under the first $100 update. But alas not. So my understanding is the transmission software update truly is new software released periodically which also kicks off an adaptive learning reset, when dealer installed. Over time I found the adaptive goes wonky and repeating the process shown above, does reset it back to smoother shifting. I noticed my wife's style and mine differ greatly on driving and the more often we both drive it the faster it goes wonky. If anyone can confirm my theories would appreciate.
I believe the updates are changing how algorithm that creates the adaptations. There must be a hardware limitation that is preventing the programmers from “solving “ the problem. I’m sure if we could talk to a programmer or drivetrain engineer from Chrysler they know exactly what is wrong. Management has chosen not to go with a recall and replace the hardware.
yes, that's right: today's adaptive learning systems/algorithms adapt to the driver within a few thousand miles. If drivers change frequently, like you - or like us - the gearshift behavior is not changed every time... because the learning process takes time and cannot be adapted for every trip. it would have been easy for the system to save 2 driver's seat positions (like Lincoln or similar has been doing for 20 years) and then it would be possible to save and use 2 different gearshift behaviors. unfortunately this is not yet implemented, but let's see what the years bring. Maybe/hopefully it will be available by now... our gearshift behavior is actually OK (2018 Pacifica). But I would like it to generally shift earlier and also drive with less gear speed when accelerating. Maybe I'll try the reset as above and then drive very moderately for a while to teach the system accordingly. regards from Germany, Raphael
I just learned of the hill start assist feature. Disabled it and can tell an immediate difference in how the engine rpm comes down. Instead of hard downshift I get engine winddown
Very interesting, I'll give that a try. My understanding was that hill start assist was only to keep the brake on a few seconds (the time it takes to move your foot from the brake pedal to the gas pedal) to prevent rollback when starting on a hill.
I have a 2017 Pacifica with 105,000 miles on it now and found this to be a great tip. I'm also resetting it about every 3-4 weeks thanks to your first video. It manages the issue well. No dealers gave me this recommendation when I purchased the car 18 months ago with 86,000 miles. They just wanted me to keep bringing it in. I can't help but believe they just wanted to charge me $200 to do this very same reset procedure every few months. I also had my engine replaced at 97,000 with a $11,000 OEM Pentastar (Engine $6,500 from local Chrysler dealer and $4,500 in labor and taxes). The valvetrain was knocking. I believe the initial cause of the worsening knocking noise was failing lifters that led to scarred rocker arms, and metal shavings throughout the engine. The Pacifica is nice van in so many respects. Using better quality materials in their valvetrain and taking responsibility for these sort of transmission issues (replacing the TCM even if out of warranty) would go a long way with customer loyalty and brand ratings. Until they do this I can't see myself purchasing another Chrysler.
I agree, Chrysler should have already done something to replace the TCM is these vehicles. At the very least, the dealers could be more helpful. I'm surprised to hear about your engine, I know the early years of the Pentastart had valve train issues but most were worked out by 2017. Out of curiosity, have you owned the van since new?
@@TheLawnEngineer I purchased the 2017 Pacifica Touring L in June 2021 with 86L miles. Fortunately I purchased it through a large dealer network here in the Bay Area (CA) and it came with a 12K/12 month powertrain Warranty. It was previously a rental and privately owned vehicle with documented regular servicing. I took it to a Chrysler dealership regarding the engine ticking noise and the jerky shifting at times. I basically got the run around on both issues. They did update the PCM under a service bulletin but that's it. I paid $19K for it, including the warranty, so it seemed like a fair deal back them. I'm just thankful I took it to an independent garage 300 miles before the warranty expired and ended up with a new OEM engine. Just a few days ago I see the OEM TCM's on Mopar's site for $150 (2017's are cheap compared to the newer model TCMs) and it looks like a relatively easy swap. Do you think this would help address the transmission issue? I recall you saying in your previous video that the problem might be the TCM hard coding from Bosch. If so, replacement wouldn't do anything unless Bosch update the coding on the new TCMs.
@@Robert-qk4ni I’m always skeptical about the quality of oil used at dealerships and with rental car companies. The service interval is based on a high quality full synthetic and they could be using conventional oil, but that won’t show up in the service history. I like to do my own maintenance for that reason. I know exactly what oil is being used and how it looks coming out. I’ve never had anything but minor problems with vehicles we have bought new. Used ones are a different story.
@@Robert-qk4ni A new TCM may fix this issue, but you have to have install it and immediately have a dealer or tech. with the programmer do the initial setup of the module. Supposedly, you shouldn't even install and drive to a dealer. I have not heard of anyone solving the problem with a replacement TCM so I'm a little hesitant to spend the money. Also, I think Chrysler would replace them if it helped. They know exactly what the problem is, and that leads me to speculate that's is hard coding from Bosch or a hardware limitation that causes the issue. These could include sampling rates of feedback, processing power, etc.
@@TheLawnEngineer That's some sound reasoning. Yes, if it were that simple they would be offering it to customers when they bring their cars in for jerking transmissions. My 2017 Touring L with 105K miles is probably worth $15K so with a new engine and regular TCM resets its worth keeping versus the prices (plus taxes) of what's out there these days.
I've seen both videos now and I'm going to try it. Probably within the next few minutes. Mine is a 2018 with 65,000 or so on it. It's a great van. But those clunking shifts are worrisome.
I got same problem but didn’t have to do anything since the software update probably 2 years ago. Now it starts doing it again so this will help clear the problem cuz the dealer won’t know what we are talking about
This only works temporarily. And honestly this should never be a "normal operation" for the van to tear itself apart after a few weeks of normal driving because someone doesn't know how to engineer a good transmission controller. This needs to be a recall and Chrysler needs to fix this issue, my engine mounts are shot now and we just passed the 60K warranty on our van, I shouldn't have to "reset" the TCM adaptive programming every other month to slap a band-aid on the problem. Especially not on a $40K van. This is ridiculously stupid to pay for a vehicle and then say "oh well" when you have mechanical issues that should never be normal for any vehicle. If all of the customers experiencing this issue complained enough eventually we would have a class action lawsuit against them to cover the repairs. The hard shifts eventually wear out the mounts on the motor/trans-axle and cause excessive wear on other drive-train components.
UGH, I was JUST TOWED AND FOUND YOUR VIDEO! Van had been jerking when easing off the gas and then wouldn’t move out of park! And I’ve just looked at ALL THESE PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME DOGGONE ISSUE. Why in the BLEEP isn’t there a RECALL!!! I’ve had my van for 3yrs and the first few months I had the issue and kept taking it in and THEY KEEP SAYING ITS NOT DOING ANYTHING! I think they TELL THEM TO SAY That! That’s just CRAZYYYY!!! 🤨🤨🤨 I’ll go in the am to try your method 🤞🏾🤞🏾
I have the 2022 chrysler pacifica pinnacle and have the same issue, I took to dealership as always, they say could not duplicate customer's concerns, and it really bothers me that $70000 vehicle comes with these types of problems, not happy at all. Thanks for the advice. I will try to hope it works for me, too
My 2019 does this frequently. Dealership cant find anything wrong. Feels like someone hits me from behind. Hard clunk. Low speeds mostly. Definitely gonna try your suggestion 👍 🍻from ONTARIO 🇨🇦
Would you have any idea if the a/c compressor has a correlation with the auto start feature? My ac compressor isn’t working and the auto start light is on in the instrument panel. 2017 pacifica
I haven’t run into that problem but the two have interconnections. However, I don’t think a non-functioning auto start/stop would prevent the ac compressor from working. The leading cause of start stop problems is the secondary battery. The leading cause of an ac compressor not kicking in is low refrigerant…it’s possible that you have both problems happen close together.
I have a 2017 and the hard shifts feels like someone just hit me in the back. I just did the reset. Wish me luck. I hope it works because I was definitely thinking about trading in this vehicle, because I was afraid of the long-term effects.
You're welcome. Unfortunately there isn't any msg or indication that the reset has occurred. If you had a dealer scan tool you can see the parameters be reset but unfortunately owners don't have visibility to that information.
Tell them you are resetting the transmission control module (TCM). A Chrysler mechanic should know exactly what is going on. A competent independent mechanic can use a scan tool to look at the shift parameters and reset. Unfortunately, there is no way that I know of to prevent the parameters from changing during driving. You may have a faulty solenoid or sensor that is making the problem worse…again an independent mechanic should be able to diagnose with a good scan tool.
Thanks for the info that’s pretty amazing. Going to try that on the 2019 Jeep Cherokee, see what happens. Had a Nissan that used a similar pedal dance to fix the rough idle.😂
@@volodymyrshuldyk8961work as in permanent fix? No. it was better for two weeks and then it was back to the same old clunking 5th shift. It’s not hard to do so you could keep doing it whenever it starts acting up. I went to the dealer to get the TCM reprogrammed with the latest firmware. I found a TSB online and use that to get the dealer to reprogram. That fixed 90% of the problem. It still has some weirdness with 5th but it doesn’t feel like the transmission is going to explode anymore. I plan on doing a drain and fill of the transmission just to have a look and see if there is any metal in the fluid. Make sure it’s OK before the warranty expires.
First, thanks for a great video that so clearly shows the transmission reset procedure. Second, I have a question about the last step (wait two minutes after taking your foot off the gas pedal). Is the reset procedure finished at that point? Or, do you HAVE to drive the vehicle so it shifts through all gears. Does it matter if I don't drive the vehicle for a few days? Our Pacifica is not a daily driver, so it can sit in the garage for several days or more before we drive it. I didn't know if the vehicle needs to be driven immediately after the reset procedure. Thank you in advance.
You’re welcome, thanks for taking the time to leave a nice comment. You do not need to drive the vehicle immediately. Upon reset the shift parameters are set back to the defaults and will stay there until you start driving. The transmission seems happiest with the defaults, not sure why they even allow them to change.
@@TheLawnEngineer Thank you for your quick reply. I really appreciate it. I haven't seen the answer (except your just now) in the other videos, articles or forum postings. I think that's an important detail that should be included in all of them. Thanks again!
They did start using a different control module in 2020, but owners have reported the same issues with 2020+ models. It was definitely not solved in 2018.
Lawn Engineer, I just bought a 2019 Touring L Plus. Everything is mint and perfect with 40,000 miles on it. I will be the only driver . Should I perform this reset To encourage the vehicle to learn my driving ? Thank You in advance for your advice.
I know this is old but i have a question after the 10 seconds when i am suppose to turn van off with gas pedal still depressed my van starts up am i doing something wrong?
I took my Pacifica into the shop because the hard shifts are becoming too bad to tolerate. I wish I would have found this video before it was in the shop! The shop is recommending a new transmission because my vehicle is 'drop shifting' and he doesn't think this TCM reset would help with that. Has anyone else been told the same thing and this reset was the actual fix?
I’ve heard a couple stories about transmission replacements being done under warranty but not fixing the problem. This was in the early days of this transmission being used in the Cherokee and Pacifica.
I have a question,i did the same Procedure on my 2018 Chrysler but after i remove my feet from the throttle after i switch off.Car just turns off right away.On yours everything appears to be working still for 2 minutes.
@@TheLawnEngineer thank you very much , because on your video, when you switched back to off car wasn’t turned of totally thats why.But i feel like it did because i dont feel anymore that hard transmission kicking after i remove my feet from the throttle.Thank you very much.Regards 🙏
I have not experienced the start delay. Does yours have the auto start/stop feature? It sounds like the secondary battery for this system may be failing.
What do you mean by rough shifts? My pacifica while driving I can feel it jerk and when sometimes I am at a light or stop sign I try and accelerate it starts to jerk before driving smoothly.
I have a 2019 chryslr pacifica and have issues with it jerking while accelerating, I also started having issues with my start stop system stopped working then one day my car wouldn't start. I replaced the big battery and it seemed to help for a few months then it died and wouldn't stay charged so I change the auxiliary battery over and it started up and the start stop began working again few days later I got another notification saying its no longer available. have you had this issue before?
My 2017 doesn’t have start/stop so I don’t have any experience with that system. However, I know that automotive batteries do not like to be discharged completely. One occurrence of a “dead” battery reduced the capacity dramatically (even on a new battery). I would have both batteries tested for possible warranty replacement. If one was draining the other it could have ruined it. I hope this helps.
Hello. I want to buy a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. Mileage 45,000 miles. Gearbox ZF 9-speed transmission. is this box a problem? What breaks most often and when? Thank you
The good new is that the 948TE transmission rarely fails completely. But they commonly shift very poorly. If you go into the purchase knowing this reset procedure you can mitigate the poor shifting.
I have. It had any issues but ours did not have adaptive cruise. I have heard of a similar issue on other brands and it usually is an issue with the front sensor.
I think this reset will help it might be the transmissions clutch parameters. It could also be a sign of a failing torque converter. The engine power should not be getting to the transmission at the low rpm of idle.
@@TheLawnEngineerwell I'm still having erratic shifting into fifth gear sometimes it's slams really hard I've already changed the fluid did the reset with the gas pedal and everything
I’m curious what your definition of ‘rough shifts’ is? What have you experienced? We experience random jolting at low gears, and now recently we’ve had some slipping occur at low speeds as well. Is this what happens with your mini van, or did you experience something else? Thanks.
Exactly what you have described, in addition to abrupt downshifts. Unfortunately we have experienced pretty much everything a transmission can do wrong but this reset has resolved all of them, until another reset is required.
@@TheLawnEngineer Curious, do you think attempting your trick would void my extended warranty? I have an extended warranty till 100,000 miles (currently has 63K), so I don't want to risk losing that. With that said, I don't want to keep taking it into a deal for bandaid fixes. In a pickle.
@@frazrt01 No I don't think this will void your warranty. I understand the pickle you are in...if it's going to break you want it to break but not limp along ok until the warranty is up. I do this to limit the amount of abuse my trans is taking because I hadn't heard of any catastrophic failures that have required replacement before 100k. I talked to my dealer about this reset and they had no problem with it. I would encourage you to mention it to yours and see what they say.
@@frazrt01 from a start, on a small incline it would seem to slip and abruptly engage…very awkward takeoff. Also, when shift from 2-3 it would seem to get stuck or slip between gears and then have a very abrupt engagement. Less often there were occasions of make a 90 degree turn onto a different road rpm would increase when getting on the accelerated but no forward movement. Eventually it would catch and very abruptly engage. I don’t think these occasions were real clutch slipping, more of the transmission getting stuck between gears or doing something with the converter.
Hey, also it might be a good idea to change the fluid and filter. The OEM fluid that Chrysler uses is pretty garbage. Rather you do it yourself or pay someone to do it I highly highly recommend you try the recommended Amsoil Signature Series fluid for your transmission.
I agree, check out my video on changing the fluid. th-cam.com/video/yPkSiJyB4I4/w-d-xo.html Unfortunately the filter is internal to the transmission so it isn’t accessible.
@@blacklilac1408 unfortunately, this ZF transmission does not have a pan. The filter is behind the torque converter, so you have to remove the transmission to replace the filter…German engineering.
No, in Wisconsin that only applies to new vehicles. I bought ours used. If you did buy your vehicle new and bring it back to the dealer 4 times for the same thing and they don't fix it, then it qualifies. The sticking point is, the dealer has to agreed that there is a problem. That is why most dealers will not admit that there is a problem and state: "operating as expected." You could get a lawyer involved but in those cases it's likely best to just move on from the vehicle. If you don't win, the lawyer fees will likely be more than buying another vehicle.
Just out of the warranty, my 2017 transmission failed and it cost $3,500 to rebuild the transmission so this is a quality issue not a software fix can do.
Hopefully the software fix can prevent the failures. Rough shifting puts a tremendous amount of stress on transmission components. A smooth shifting transmission feels better to drive but also lasts longer.
I think mine has been doing it so hard that it’s worn out the engine mounts. I hear a clunk when it does it. Sometimes it even feels like someone ran in to us. It’s shakes the whole van.
Thank you. I’m going in to get the powertrain software update for my vehicle there was a recall. Idk if that helps maybe a recall for your vehicle. Thanks again for this video.
They did the same thing to me on my jeep Cherokee that has a nine speed courtesy Dodge kept blowing me off and pushing me out the door until my warranty was up. The best thing you can do for that thing is get that molar fluid out of there and fill it with Valvoline, my car never shifted. Unfortunately I waited to do it until I had 170,000 miles on my vehicle though it still runs tho
I’m sorry you had the same experience. I would rather say “we know there is a problem but Chrysler does have a fix.” Its unfortunate that the media treats recall as negative news, I think that’s part of the reason manufacturers try everything in their power not do acknowledge problems…that and money. Thanks for sharing your experience with Valvoline great information.
The reset returns the TCM to the stock tune. There is no way to undue, other than to drive and let the adaptations happen. I would be concerned if this made it worse, severe wear or a mechanical issue is present.
I have tried this now three times and it doesn't seem like anything has changed. This problem seems to be the exact same thing we are dealing with but can't seem to get this reset to fix it. Is there any confirmation that the reset has taken?
Unfortunately there is no confirmation that anything happens. I would double check that you are following the procedure. The vehicle should not start(never touch the brake)
Hi, I love your videos on Pacificas! My 2017 has about 51,000 miles on it. I did the reset but its still downshifting a little hard when im shifting back into first gear when coming to a stop. I had my fluid exchanged and I have an appointment to do the software update/flash in a about a week. I had the update done in 2020 and it fixed the issue for 30,000 miles. Now im worried trans is failing. And words of wisdom?
Even though these transmissions shift poorly the failure rate is quite low. If you can live with some hard shifting it will still last for quite a few more miles.
I did receive a few mailers about a class action suit but I never investigated it more. I've been involved in a few and it seems like the only ones who get compensation worth anything is the lawyers.
Had to pay 270 for a transmission software update because chysler couldn't make it right the first time. Never going by another chysler, jeep, dodge ,ram ,fiat product again
@@alisaleh2509 they use their own transmission, usually pretty solid on that front. They have had a few hiccups over the years but they usually correct course quickly.
It is very disappointing. I did get a service manager to talk to me and he was pretty smug. He seemed to think people were being picky and the shifting will never be good enough for everyone….well when it feels like you’re being rear ended, it’s not good enough.
@@TheLawnEngineer one service manager said something similar. When I said my Corolla or pilot has no such issue he said all cars have different transmission. Just get used to this
Setting and resetting forever is not a solution.... That's a hassle.... it's a manufactured malfunction..... just get a Toyota Sienna and put your anxiety to rest for good.... there's a good reason why families only buy Toyota and Honda vans... learn from these familie..s.
It's not a solution but it is a way for those to live with it who have already purchased. In general, Toyotas and Hondas are more reliable but they are not without their problems. The Honda min-van actually uses the same 9-speed transmission from ZF as the Pacifica.
Dear Mr. Lawnmower Engineer, you just saved me thousands that Chrysler told me it was likely going to cost with your "trick." I did it last night, and today the car drives again as new instead of rattling like a toolbox. Phew! Thanks a lot. You’re a good man.
You’re welcome, I’m glad I could help.
u r savage man worked like magic🤔🤘👌☺️
I just did this to our 35th Anniversary Pacifia. Worked like a charm.
Thank you!
I’m glad my video was able to help you out.
I can’t imagine the frustration the shade tree mechanic must be feeling…good intentions…
How do you put 500,000 miles on a six year old car? Wow!
You're welcome, glad it helped!
Thank you so much. My dealer told me it wasn't a problem until right after my warranty was out and then they wanted me to bring it in. I'll be trying this right now.
Good luck, I hope this helps you out.

Thanks so much. I will be trying your procedure on my 2017 Pacifica this afternoon.

Worked like a charm, enjoy driving the van again. Thanks so much
Great to hear! Thanks for checking in.
My wife is complaining about her transmission slipping today and was going to take it into the shop and then I did some research and seeing this and I did exactly what you said in that works she said that she was amazing can't believe that it worked FYI mine is a 2020 Voyager but same thing same issues
I'm glad this helped you out, but its unfortunate its still a problem on 2020s.
Great to hear there are some good dealers out there. I’ll have to check with mine again and see if they will admit anything.
Worked like a charm. We have a 2019 and the transmission has been acting up. My wife used it today and the check engine light came on and it wouldn't go above 30 she said. I found this video, did the reset and viola everything is fine.
Awesome, glad I could help.
I agree, seems like it should be easy to just freeze the shifting parameters but doesn’t seem to be. Thanks for checking in 👍
can you share more about the problematic start/stop feature? i think i’m having problems with this but don’t know what to do about it, thanks!
There's ways to permanently disable the Auto Start/Stop feature.
Well done. I will continue to look for your videos on your van. Thanks again for helping others by making your videos.
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
I’m noticing some subtle weird/abnormal shifts at low speeds on our ‘19 Pacifica. I’ll try resetting the transmission module back to its original setting and will let you know. Thank you again, you are the best!
Yes, please stop back and let me know if this helps. Have a great rest of your Mother’s Day weekend.
Worked great! 👍 Would like to see more Pacifica videos. Thank you for the great information 😁

Okay. I'll give this a try and hopefully be rid of these hard random shifts. Thank you.
You’re welcome, hopefully this helps 👍
THANK YOU!!!! I fixed my thing here!! you a GENIUOS
You're welcome!
I hope it helps you out. Thanks for checking in.
I got same problem but didn’t have to do anything since the software update probably 2 years ago. Now it starts doing it again so this will help clear the problem cuz the dealer won’t know what we are talking about
Yes, the dealers don’t seem to know much about this problem.
You are spot on.
I agree, it’s sad and disappointing that this hasn’t been a major recall yet. I hope this reset helps you out.

I have the 2022 chrysler pacifica pinnacle and have the same issue, I took to dealership as always, they say could not duplicate customer's concerns, and it really bothers me that $70000 vehicle comes with these types of problems, not happy at all. Thanks for the advice. I will try to hope it works for me, too
That is terrible, unfortunately the higher trim levels don’t buy a better powertrain.
I believe that...

Thank you! I'm glad this was able to help you out.
My 2019 does this frequently. Dealership cant find anything wrong. Feels like someone hits me from behind. Hard clunk. Low speeds mostly. Definitely gonna try your suggestion 👍 🍻from ONTARIO 🇨🇦
Thanks for checking in. The dealer definitely knows…deflect delay lie…anyway, this should help you out.
Thank you for replying. I did get refrigerant and pressure checked and everything was good. I think I am going to have to check/change the compressor
thank you very much this really helped me
Glad it helped!

Good luck, I'm hopeful the reset will make a big improvement.
Great video. Thanks!! After you done this reset will you get any msg on dashboard so you know that transmission reset was completed?
You're welcome. Unfortunately there isn't any msg or indication that the reset has occurred. If you had a dealer scan tool you can see the parameters be reset but unfortunately owners don't have visibility to that information.
I'm having to do this daily now. How do I explain this to a mechanic so I can get it fixed or at least improved?
Tell them you are resetting the transmission control module (TCM). A Chrysler mechanic should know exactly what is going on.
A competent independent mechanic can use a scan tool to look at the shift parameters and reset. Unfortunately, there is no way that I know of to prevent the parameters from changing during driving. You may have a faulty solenoid or sensor that is making the problem worse…again an independent mechanic should be able to diagnose with a good scan tool.
@@TheLawnEngineer THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Thanks for the info that’s pretty amazing. Going to try that on the 2019 Jeep Cherokee, see what happens. Had a Nissan that used a similar pedal dance to fix the rough idle.😂
Your welcome. It's pretty sad that we have to do this reset but at least there is something that helps.
Did it work on Jeep Cherokee?
@@sbond1963 thank you for replying
Did Chrysler end up fixing this transmission control module issue on later models such as 2018 or newer?
They did start using a different control module in 2020, but owners have reported the same issues with 2020+ models.
It was definitely not solved in 2018.
Lawn Engineer, I just bought a 2019 Touring L Plus. Everything is mint and perfect with 40,000 miles on it. I will be the only driver . Should I perform this reset To encourage the vehicle to learn my driving ? Thank You in advance for your advice.
Not a bad idea to do the reset. Thanks for checking in, congrats on the purchase.
I know this is old but i have a question after the 10 seconds when i am suppose to turn van off with gas pedal still depressed my van starts up am i doing something wrong?
Yes, the van should not start. Make sure to keep your feet off the brake pedal.
I gotta do this with my Pacifica, maybe four times a week
That’s unfortunate, at least you have found a way to make it work. Thanks for sharing so we can all learn.
Do you have to drive it after the 2 minute wait? Or, can you just go through the reset process and start it up the next day?
You do not need to drive it after, you can wait until the next day.
It does work

The transmission reset will help with the jerking during acceleration.

The good new is that the 948TE transmission rarely fails completely. But they commonly shift very poorly.
If you go into the purchase knowing this reset procedure you can mitigate the poor shifting.

Yes it does.
Any advice on the vehicle clunking into park? The van even recoils a bit after letting off brake after going into park
I think this reset will help it might be the transmissions clutch parameters. It could also be a sign of a failing torque converter. The engine power should not be getting to the transmission at the low rpm of idle.
Use the parking brake

@@TheLawnEngineer last question - can you explain what kind of slipping characteristics occurred with your van prior to learning of the resets?

Does this qualify for the lemon law?

@@TheLawnEngineer thanks for the video it was a great help. I will go with the Toyota from now on. It’s a shame but what do you do
The dealer didnt know this?
They either didn't know or didn't want to share. Both options are not a good look for the dealer.
I do the same thing resetting every 3 weeks
Thanks for sharing your experience.
I did the reset now car is worse. Is there a way to undo it
The reset returns the TCM to the stock tune.
If you can live with some hard shifting it will still last for quite a few more miles.
i do it to mine same as u lol ever 5ish weeks its at 105k miles now
Awesome, great to hear it’s working for you too 👍. We are the transmission resetting club of America 😝
@@TheLawnEngineer for real lol im hopefull for that recall as well mine is a 2018
@@toolsonabudget7763 fingers crossed.
Don’t tell me, the Service Manager told you repeatedly this is ‘normal’ and/or ‘they all do that’s
Absolutely, very frustrating.
They should have replaced the transmission under warranty, or a buy back, with a lemon law deal.
Instead, I was told it was normal for this vehicle.
Does this work on a 2022?
Yes it does, I’m sorry that you have a need for it.
Chrysler Pacifica owners shall we band together to get this investigated! Because rn my van shifts rough from 27-30 39-40 mphs.
I did receive a few mailers about a class action suit but I never investigated it more. I've been involved in a few and it seems like the only ones who get compensation worth anything is the lawyers.
I still don't understand. Chrysler replaced my engine for these hard shifts. And it still does that. :LOL
Wow, that is a good one. They replaced your engine for this?
Had to pay 270 for a transmission software update because chysler couldn't make it right the first time. Never going by another chysler, jeep, dodge ,ram ,fiat product again
Seems like a easy thing to do for free to keep a customer, some companies/dealers just don't get the long term...
Best fix is to trade it in for Honda or Toyota
That is an option! Be warned the Honda uses the same ZF nine speed transmission and a Bosch control module.
@@TheLawnEngineer How about Toyota
@@alisaleh2509 they use their own transmission, usually pretty solid on that front. They have had a few hiccups over the years but they usually correct course quickly.
@@TheLawnEngineer sounds good Toyota is the best
Honda was a nightmare. Especially if you live in a hot climate. They removed the rear AC and it never stayed cool enough.
Can you make a video in Spanish.? 🙏🏻
Unfortunately, mi espanol es pequeno. Hopefully AI can solve this soon.
Unbelievable that Chrysler is not even acknowledging. Never again Chrysler.
I even have a coolant leak and it end up changing radiator
It is very disappointing. I did get a service manager to talk to me and he was pretty smug. He seemed to think people were being picky and the shifting will never be good enough for everyone….well when it feels like you’re being rear ended, it’s not good enough.
@@TheLawnEngineer one service manager said something similar. When I said my Corolla or pilot has no such issue he said all cars have different transmission. Just get used to this
i am glad i got get rid off pacific car.
That was a good move.
Hogwash . I had to COMPLETELY flush and change the fluid in our 18 Odyssee Elite every 6 mos . Now the new Odys have the same tranny
Chrysler is the worst automaker in America
You could make that argument but most of issues. I prefer to look at models and engines/transmissions to avoid because all car makers have them.
