My engine had a slight rattle last time I turned it on, I was told I could be out of transmission fluid and not to drive until I could get it checked as it could blow my trans. I don’t drive it much since it’s not registered but all the auto shops are a fair distance from me and being told my transmission could blow I don’t feel like taking the chance to have it checked

If you do happen to suspect your transmission to be low on fluid, it's not a bad idea to look for leaks. Gaskets and seals can naturally seep fluid as they age, but an excessively wet spot on the underside of the vehicle or dripping of fluid is a direct indication of a leak that needs to be repaired. That fluid has to be going somewhere!
This is good advice. I'd also like to suggest putting a flattened cardboard box under the vehicle. It'll show if there's any fluid dripping - especiallyif it's just a few drips. It's easier to identify the color and location of the fluid, which helps indicate what part of the vehicle is leaking.
My car was doing exactly that!!! I’m not gonna drive it until next Friday and bring it to the trans guy. But it drove beautifully until a few days ago. Transmission symbol light just came on in yellow. I’m hoping it’s exactly what you said it could be. This was a great informative video. I'm afraid the problem isn't actually that serious and that it could have been solved without spending that amount of money. I hooe they are not scamming... 🤬
@@drake4121 Actually, no. Once you start driving it, there's no slipping, hesitation or clunk (at least I don't hear or feel any of that). The problem is only when moving from P to R and D and between R and D (in any direction). So I don't know why they have to rebuild the whole transmission.
This was excellent advice. My MB S65 V-12 AMG had these lingering problems after dealership repaired limp mode problem. These symptoms arose immediately after limp mode repair delivery. Added fluid myself. All symptoms are now gone. Thanks for sharing this knowledge.

If it's REALLY low, it won't take off from a stop right away. The pump has to build the pressure to get it going. So if it hesitates from a stop, check your levels
Mate. Thankyou so much for this advice. We bought a car that had 1100 pounds spent on the gear box. We thought it was the gear box faulting but with what you have said, and the symptoms our car has. Also let people know that OVERfilling a transmission will cause alot of these same symptoms so please check your fluid the correct way, you could have too much fluid and assume that its low based off this video and seriously overfill your transmission even more
i found my car having these symptoms, i checked if it was low on transmission fluid and i found that it was overfilled. i’m part of a low income family so taking it to a mechanic is out of the question. this is my only source of transportation. how can i fix an overfilled transmission at home?

@@alexiswilliams6161 Most transmissions have a drain plug (which is often, as on my car, just a regular-old bolt sticking out of the bottom) which you can use to safely drain some of the fluid. My advice: Get 1 Quart of transmission fluid (look at the cap of the reservoir for the type, e.g., Mercon V). Drain out the fluid in amounts equal or less than 1 Qt. Check with multiple dipstick readings between drainings. Once you see that the dipstick is reading min or is dry, slowly add tiny amounts (like 1/10th of a quart MAX) until it's at the minimum level. Warm up the transmission, take a reading, and add some more if needed.

This was exactly what I needed to find. My cars check engine light has been on 99% of the time since I got it two years ago. And now I feel the engine grabbing when I shift from drive to neutral and there’s a loud clanking sound constantly. I don’t trust the mechanic I bought my car from or the garage I’ve been taking it to right across the street from my home. They laugh at me when I leave. The last time I asked what is the problem so we can plan ahead and all they say is they will take care of things one at a time.

Hey this really helped! I had recently changed out the Head Gaskets on my 2003 Dodge Ram, 1500 2WD, 4.7L and I basically returned it back to the living! But... heater core is leaking, throttle was filthy dirty causing my RPM to go higher than it should. And just finally starting to fix everything step by step and since I removed the radiator/power steering everything to the compressor etc etc I overlooked the obvious. My darn transmission fluid. After 3 days that I changed the gaskets I didint think my transmission fluid needed checking since I just did a recent change in both motor and transmission fluids but all of these symptoms were happening! Then boom, check gauges light came on and I finally checked my motor and transmission fluid. BOTH were bone dry! Thanks a bunch! So far no leaks after I added both fluids. Thanks for the video! I hate and appreciate this video so much because the 4 symptoms are very much accurate that I went through and experience after I trusted my mechanic to change the transmission fluid on my Hyundai ionic hybrid which i had to find out later on from my dealership that he only put one quart of oil into it..OMG i freaking so pissed off at him because either he did it incompetently which I doubt or purposely! My dealership took a video of it on transmission fluid changed for evidence purposes but it’s too late. I have to spend $1700 for new transmission and that’s my 2 week unemployment with Covid PUA $600/ week money. My hard life lesson on this also is to follow religiously on your scheduled maintenance and most importantly, do diligent research on your trusted mechanic. left the store in my 05 gt mustang shifted me hard then i got up to speed & my engine reved hard but would not move... switched to 1, 2, 3 & the car would move i had to drive slow all the way home. put fluid in it now it drives great!
My 02 mustang isn’t shifting right and I found out the fluid was low by almost a quart...topped it off and it’s a little better but still not right. Thinking about trying some Lucas stop slip now
Don't take it on the highway to test the transmission! There's enough surface streets to do this on, and you won't end up on a road where you/re going 40mph while all the other traffic wanting to go highway speed is stacked behind you, and you can't exit the road for miles.

YOU FORGOT ABOUT A 'WHINING' or 'WHIRING' TRANSMISSION SOUND! I believe the whine comes from the torque converter NOT getting enough fluid to pump through the turbine type converter. See ya when ya get out!!

I don't feel delays when I put it in D or R. However, the engine revs up and the actual acceleration is delayed. The car feels very weak on hills. It does not go in its 4th speed, therefore it switches back to 3rd and still struggling. In a slight incline at 30-35 mph, it keeps shifting down just to a bit of depressing the accelerator pedal, when you would expect the car to accelerate without shifting back.
I have problem with my transmission aysin TF80sc,but no one has the same problem,my car is making a clunk,shake whole car,when shifting to R from N or P, no problems shifting in D,and only when its hot,when is cold its just perfect...Anyone any idea?

5th symptom slight vibration on take off at cold temp and during low speed acceleration or during turning while accelerating which can be the only symptom without the rest of those symptoms happening
Great video. My old beater was shifting a bit weird and taking awhile to get into gear. This morning it would not even move in reverse and crept on d. Checked my fluid and it didn’t even register on the stick. Had an old jeep that “needed and transmission” from seller… same issue. Added fluid and got another 50k out of it.
Im heading to the auto parts store tomorrow! I was so close to selling my car but had a gut feeling to keep it. I'm not willing to give it up yet. I have a 03 Toy 4runner but with only 151k. Historically they run 250k and more. Praying the fluid works.
Thanks so much! I was experiencing #2 and #3 and my 2003 dodge dakota was throwing a whole bunch of error codes, P1762, P1402, etc. And it was due low transmission fluid. Didn't even think to check the fluid level. Ended up doing a full flush which was very much needed since didn't know when it was last done since it was an inherited vehicle.
👍😎 an over heating transmission can also be a sign that the transmission cooling line is clogged. At which point adding more ATF would create a bigger problem by creating excess pressure inside the transmission.

I paid a lot replacing a computer box after a machenic advised it was my problem.. But problem still persistent, one machenic tried to make me buy a whole gear box from him.. Now i found this video..now i just gotta figure out how were tha hell i refill my transmission fluid

this morning, my wife's 2020 Jeep Compass would not accellerate past 20 mph. She told me the trans overheating warning came on - so I'll be buying a few quarts of transmission fluid on my way home.
I want to add something that might be useful. I have a 2013 honda civic with 70,000 miles. On new years eve, coming home from work the check engine light came on solid, then the "D" light was flashing and a message said, "check transmission". I panicked but then the following day I did research and pulled out the code, PO843 that said, "Transmission sensor/Switch "A" High" The following day I discovered that several issues can cause this: A- low transmission fluid B- dirty transmission fluid and filter C- second gear transmission sensor is going bad and failing.. So, what I did to diagnose was process of elimination by starting with the easiest: put in a little more transmission fluid.. After that, drove car for about 1.5 hours then shot car off.. Then turn car on and check engine light went out. Car seems to shift fine because before was not going to second gear.. How can you tell? If you are familiar with your car then you know at what SPECIFIC EENGINE RPMS the transmission shifts.. the moral of the story is that before you go and spend a small fortune start with the most basics.. I also checked under the transmission and there were no signs of external leaks.
@@cleanmirror8279 I know that mine was $97 dollars at the Honda dealer. In your case because is an Audi, I think is more expensive. However, I would not buy an aftermarket sensor for that Audi as those cars are so delicate that any change would trip the check engine light. For sensors and electronic parts, I recommend OEM, that way is a permanent repair. If you can do it yourself, even better you'll be saving money on labor.

I recognise two of those symptoms: a. the delay in entering Reverse or Drive, and b. the heavy *clunk* when the auto shifts gear while driving. But I also appreciated the wise advice to find out why my XC70 Volvo is low on transmission fluid. That sounds like this diagnosis/cure might be expensive. Any idea what those causes could be?
What year is your Volvo XC70? There are four issues that come to mind regarding the trans on the XC70 three of which have sullying that aren't all that bank breaking. Assuming of course you catch it and take care of the service/repair ASAP.
Mine said that my engine was overheating but the car had all of the other symptoms as well. Hopefully that's what my problem is because I just had a transmission control module put in last Friday and today it started showing those symptoms. Thanks for the insight!!

Thank you for the video. I have a jeep wrangler with automatic transmission that jolts really hard when slowing down and shifting to a low gear. How much lower on fluid does it have to be to start feeling the symptoms? Would a quart low cause it?
When you have those problems because of low fluid there is not enough pressure in the system to squeeze the clutches together. That is why ATF is really a specialized hydraulic fluid. The other day my Passat was shifting a little slower than it normally does. I just added some fluid and now it is back to normal. With some transmissions it may be a faulty valve body and they can be expensive to replace. The worst part of that is there is no real guarantee that changing the valve body will help but in fact it might even make things worse.
I have a Suzuki Swift and I have experienced twice whereby I press gas pedal but the car is not powering and was suspecting issues with my gearbox and this video confirms that
Shop serviced my transmission . When I checked it a week later it was 1.5 quarts low. Had shop fill it up. Before transmission serviced it was full never had to add. I think they under filled it. Question. Driving car with 1.5 quarts low hurt anything? It shifts fine and never had problems with it before or after. Car has 50,000 on clock. I have learned to go back and double check anything a shop may do to my car to make sure done right. Enjoyed yr video. Jamey
I check my fluids periodically. The only symptom I've seen in my vehicles is a low fluid level on the dipstick. You should ask yourself why you're losing fluid if it gets low unexpectedly.

tiyang44 check your owners manual. Some newer cars have a sealed trans, and no dipstick.

I don’t trust the mechanic I bought my car from or the garage I’ve been taking it to right across the street from my home. They laugh at me when I leave. The last time I asked what is the problem so we can plan ahead and all they say is they will take care of things one at a time.

I had recently changed out the Head Gaskets on my 2003 Dodge Ram, 1500 2WD, 4.7L and I basically returned it back to the living! But... heater core is leaking, throttle was filthy dirty causing my RPM to go higher than it should. And just finally starting to fix everything step by step and since I removed the radiator/power steering everything to the compressor etc etc I overlooked the obvious. My darn transmission fluid. After 3 days that I changed the gaskets I didint think my transmission fluid needed checking since I just did a recent change in both motor and transmission fluids but all of these symptoms were happening! Then boom, check gauges light came on and I finally checked my motor and transmission fluid. BOTH were bone dry! Thanks a bunch! So far no leaks after I added both fluids. Thanks for the video!

I hate and appreciate this video so much because the 4 symptoms are very much accurate that I went through and experience after I trusted my mechanic to change the transmission fluid on my Hyundai ionic hybrid which i had to find out later on from my dealership that he only put one quart of oil into it..OMG i freaking so pissed off at him because either he did it incompetently which I doubt or purposely! My dealership took a video of it on transmission fluid changed for evidence purposes but it’s too late. I have to spend $1700 for new transmission and that’s my 2 week unemployment with Covid PUA $600/ week money. My hard life lesson on this also is to follow religiously on your scheduled maintenance and most importantly, do diligent research on your trusted mechanic. left the store in my 05 gt mustang shifted me hard then i got up to speed & my engine reved hard but would not move... switched to 1, 2, 3 & the car would move i had to drive slow all the way home. put fluid in it now it drives great!

Don't take it on the highway to test the transmission! There's enough surface streets to do this on, and you won't end up on a road where you/re going 40mph while all the other traffic wanting to go highway speed is stacked behind you, and you can't exit the road for miles.

For the seemingly quick video shoot at a random indoor location, your audio quality is superb.
1. Hard Shift - Shifting gears, might jolt or jack the car back or forth.
2. Delayed Shifting - You feel your car shifts slowly into another gear.
3. Transmission Slipping - Gas pedal is pressed and engine revs and car won't move.
4. Transmission Overheating.

YOU FORGOT ABOUT A 'WHINING' or 'WHIRING' TRANSMISSION SOUND! I believe the whine comes from the torque converter NOT getting enough fluid to pump through the turbine type converter. See ya when ya get out!!

I don't feel delays when I put it in D or R. However, the engine revs up and the actual acceleration is delayed. The car feels very weak on hills. It does not go in its 4th speed, therefore it switches back to 3rd and still struggling. In a slight incline at 30-35 mph, it keeps shifting down just to a bit of depressing the accelerator pedal, when you would expect the car to accelerate without shifting back.
I'm having the same problem now. Did you get this figured out? Hoping i don't have to replace my transmission...

5th symptom slight vibration on take off at cold temp and during low speed acceleration or during turning while accelerating which can be the only symptom without the rest of those symptoms happening

Great video. My old beater was shifting a bit weird and taking awhile to get into gear. This morning it would not even move in reverse and crept on d. Checked my fluid and it didn’t even register on the stick. Had an old jeep that “needed and transmission” from seller… same issue. Added fluid and got another 50k out of it.

Thanks so much! I was experiencing #2 and #3 and my 2003 dodge dakota was throwing a whole bunch of error codes, P1762, P1402, etc. And it was due low transmission fluid. Didn't even think to check the fluid level. Ended up doing a full flush which was very much needed since didn't know when it was last done since it was an inherited vehicle.

👍😎 an over heating transmission can also be a sign that the transmission cooling line is clogged. At which point adding more ATF would create a bigger problem by creating excess pressure inside the transmission.

Good info. Thank you so much. I didn’t realize I was low when it took a couple seconds to get into drive. Then today I got a transmission heat warning that I never had before. I needed to add 1/2 quart of atf +4 to get it to the correct hot level.

I want to add something that might be useful. I have a 2013 honda civic with 70,000 miles. On new years eve, coming home from work the check engine light came on solid, then the "D" light was flashing and a message said, "check transmission". I panicked but then the following day I did research and pulled out the code, PO843 that said, "Transmission sensor/Switch "A" High" The following day I discovered that several issues can cause this:
A- low transmission fluid
B- dirty transmission fluid and filter
C- second gear transmission sensor is going bad and failing..
So, what I did to diagnose was process of elimination by starting with the easiest: put in a little more transmission fluid.. After that, drove car for about 1.5 hours then shot car off.. Then turn car on and check engine light went out. Car seems to shift fine because before was not going to second gear.. How can you tell? If you are familiar with your car then you know at what SPECIFIC EENGINE RPMS the transmission shifts.. the moral of the story is that before you go and spend a small fortune start with the most basics.. I also checked under the transmission and there were no signs of external leaks.

I know that mine was $97 dollars at the Honda dealer. In your case because is an Audi, I think is more expensive. However, I would not buy an aftermarket sensor for that Audi as those cars are so delicate that any change would trip the check engine light. For sensors and electronic parts, I recommend OEM, that way is a permanent repair. If you can do it yourself, even better you'll be saving money on labor.

I agree with - M below! Thanks so much for the helpful tips. I recognise two of those symptoms: a. the delay in entering Reverse or Drive, and b. the heavy *clunk* when the auto shifts gear while driving. But I also appreciated the wise advice to find out why my XC70 Volvo is low on transmission fluid. That sounds like this diagnosis/cure might be expensive. Any idea what those causes could be?
What year is your Volvo XC70? There are four issues that come to mind regarding the trans on the XC70 three of which have sullying that aren't all that bank breaking. Assuming of course you catch it and take care of the service/repair ASAP.
Mine said that my engine was overheating but the car had all of the other symptoms as well. Hopefully that's what my problem is because I just had a transmission control module put in last Friday and today it started showing those symptoms. Thanks for the insight!!

Thank you for the video. I have a jeep wrangler with automatic transmission that jolts really hard when slowing down and shifting to a low gear. How much lower on fluid does it have to be to start feeling the symptoms? Would a quart low cause it?
When you have those problems because of low fluid there is not enough pressure in the system to squeeze the clutches together. That is why ATF is really a specialized hydraulic fluid. The other day my Passat was shifting a little slower than it normally does. I just added some fluid and now it is back to normal. With some transmissions it may be a faulty valve body and they can be expensive to replace. The worst part of that is there is no real guarantee that changing the valve body will help but in fact it might even make things worse.
I have a Suzuki Swift and I have experienced twice whereby I press gas pedal but the car is not powering and was suspecting issues with my gearbox and this video confirms that

Shop serviced my transmission . When I checked it a week later it was 1.5 quarts low. Had shop fill it up. Before transmission serviced it was full never had to add.
I think they under filled it.
Question. Driving car with 1.5 quarts low hurt anything? It shifts fine and never had problems with it before or after. Car has 50,000 on clock.

I check my fluids periodically. The only symptom I've seen in my vehicles is a low fluid level on the dipstick. You should ask yourself why you're losing fluid if it gets low unexpectedly.
