Nice job, Angela. Just a possible alternative for other viewers. I have a mini upright freezer in my basement/laundry area where there is a floor drain. I defrost it a couple times a year. I put all the food in coolers, unplug the freezer, and scoot it close to the floor drain. I put a box fan in front of it and run that for about an hour while I'm off doing something else productive (usually cleaning). When I return, the ice is all gone and all I have to do is wipe clean and dry the inside of the freezer and the floor to the drain, return the freezer to its place, plug it back in, and return the food to the freezer. I have a steamer and could use it on the freezer, but because the freezer is small and doesn't build up that much ice, an hour with a box fan works great.
Well Angela, you are about a Goddess with the ideas you've provided me here, thank you! I can tell you this, if you were contracted to do this at our house & we'd seen these kind of results, we would absolutely be raving about the job you've done. Something I've noticed - - many of the TH-cam "defrost your freezer" VID's, show people pitching the chunks of ice or pouring out the former ice (now water) down the sink, etc. This is FREE H2O (at least you didn't have to pay for it in the conventional sense) and unless there is some reason I hadn't thought of, should go right into the garden, whether it be on the fruits & veggies or Wifey's flowers. The more build-up that's in your freezer, the better to put on your plants & such. This is exactly what the "gray water movement" is all about, heck if you're a bit anal about it, you could even wring your towels into a bucket to water them with every last drop. 🤪 Cheers to you from Aurora, Colorado (U.S.A.)!
HI Angela, Just come across channel and was mightily impressed by your video on how to defrost and clean a freezer. I absolutely detest cleaning my counter freezer and fridge freezer. Oven cleaning is bad enough, but defrosting is a real pain in the arse. Both of my fridge freezers now resemble Children of The Ross Ice Shelf in the Antarctic!! I suffer from chronic arthritis and mobility problems and have been putting off defrosting them for ages. Your video gave me new hope. You area very practical, smart and incredibly thorough person Angela. You think of everything and leave no stone unturned. Angela the Defrost Guru! Thank You 🇬🇧❄☃️
So good to open this topic! I worked at an office with people who didn't seem to understand the older model freezer did not have "auto defrost" :) What a mess!
I usually do this in the coldest of winter. That way I can put my stuff in coolers and on sleds and put it out on the porch. Then I take a step ladder and two space heaters and blow the heat into my upright freezer. If I want to get somewhere close I use my hair dryer
@@AskAngelaBrown It worked perfectly, I was hacking away with a knife until I checked if I could use a steamer, and you saved me! Happy Christmas Angie from the U of K. 🎅🎅🎄
Another great video, Angie, just was thinking about cleaning out freezer n deep freeze, this came handy....also, if you can do a video on how to clean an oven without the fumes (oven cleaner says "fumeless " but it still gives off an order, help!)🙏🤗❣️
Check your user manual first for guidance. You can try using a flathead screwdriver to gently pry it out. Remember to unplug the freezer before maintenance.
Just got a new freezer that will need to be defrosted eventually. I’ve been excited that I could use my steamer to help with this, but someone told me that boiling water might damage it. So how careful do I need to be with a steamer… Like keep it away from certain areas or some thing? Thanks, love all your videos!
The secret is to unplug the freezer before defrosting it. And when using a steamer, point it at the ice itself. As the ice starts to thaw you will be able to remove it long before the steam reaches the coils.
@@AskAngelaBrown Thanks so much! I’ll definitely be doing it this way. Always enjoy learning from your videos; you have a way of explaining clearly without too much🙂💙
Hey Angela, how about recommendations for hand held steamers and steam mops? It seems like all of the products die after a few uses and then they stop spitting steam or it pours water out of the front of the unit.
We have what is called a Large Appliance package. And we come back twice a year to clean them. It includes defrosting the freezer, cleaning the inside of the fridge, the inside of the oven, the inside of the dishwasher and the inside of the microwave. The project is usually $250 and we add it to our maintenance cleaning and then amortize the cost over 12 months. $500 divided by 12 months which adds $41 more to your monthly cleaning bill. The 2 x deep cleans can be scheduled whenever it works for the clients. We usually do April and October or May and November. And if the customers don't have a garage fridge/freezer or freezer you can swap out one appliance for a backyard barbecue grill. We go over all this kind of stuff in our Special projects course at Savvy Cleaner. savvycleaner.com/join
I do mine even faster with a hammer and a dustpan. I'm not talking beating the ice in such a way that things might get damaged. It only takes a few gentle taps to break it up. Mine is a chest freezer, so I just empty it, give the ice a few good taps, then start scooping the chunks out with a clean dustpan and putting it in a bucket to dump outside. I tap and scoop until it's all gone, then load it back up. Whole process takes about 10-15 minutes.
I love that you are willing to do that on your own freezer. Unfortunately, even if that works wonders, the liability a cleaning company would face turning over hammers to employees to defrost customers freezers would void any insurance claims if they "accidentally" damaged a client's freezer. LOL.
Great question - we are renovating our database to now include trained and certified cleaning technicians who have been through our program and are trained in our methods. I'll be making an announcement soon.
what are some other jobs that you use your steamer for I want to buy a steamer but I also don't want to invest my money on something that I'm only going to use 4 defrosting freezers
Showers, grout, floors, faucets, toys, patio furniture, BBQ Grills, Ovens, Stovetops, ranges and hoods, Microwaves, glass, knick-knacks, ceramic figurines. The possibilities are endless. Make sure if you get one that it has a hand-held attachment. This is the one I'm using in the video amzn.to/3p2VAsr and with the floor attachment you can mop/steam all your bathroom floors with it as well.
@@AskAngelaBrown Curious, I used my steamer on my vinyl squares floor and eventually they separated from the floor. Have you ever seen a steamer affect these floors?
Lol when I first seen this videos thumbnail, I thought you were going to teach us a handy trick on how to whiten our teeth using steam. And then I read the description. 😂
Customers lying on reviews is part of the review process. Don't worry too much about it. You will get haters - some of them jealous competitors who try to bring you down. Yes. The alternative would be to flip the breaker to the freezer, but part of this job was to clean around the freezer and the debris behind and under it which mean scooting it out - and we unplugged it at that time.
Yes, I would use the same steamer. Short of unplugging the freezer for 3 days...the steamer will bust through the ice quickly and allow you to scoop the big pieces out to finish melting elsewhere.

How do you get the plug out from inside the chest freezer

Do you cut the electricity while you are cleaning it?
Yes, the freezer was unplugged.
When I wipe up after steaming I spray the freezer with Pam or wipe with a paper towel soaked in cooking oil.
