I only have this little freezer department on top of my fridge and it was basically just an ice block at this point.
That’s why I couldn’t add anything to let it melt. So here’s what I did: I warmed water to 80 degrees, put it in a little spray can and sprayed all over the ice.
It got relatively loose pretty fast. Than I took a knife and „hammered“ it carefully below. It got loose enough to take the entire thing out as one piece.
I threw it in the shower and ran hot water over it. Worked super nicely and now I can actually keep things in there 😅

If you defrost before ice builds up, you can leave the food in the trays as it only takes a few minutes with a heater to defrost with very little to clean up. Done on a regular basis instead of leaving it until you have no choice, it is quick and easy, instead of something to dread. If you need to clean the trays, they can be emptied onto the bench as it only takes a quick wipe to clean them, by the time you are done, the freezer is defrosted.

My freezer is in the same room as the electric clothes dryer. Open the freezer door, route the flexible dryer hose in front, turn the dryer temperature to Mediterranean (not Sahara), and blast away. Get the missus to stand in the puddle and catch the falling chunks. If her eyes light up, you forgot to unplug the freezer.

    Thanks mate. Beauty.
[edit] Just the prep itself took me about 15mins. We didn’t have esky’s so I used plastic crates lined with a bathroom towel to store the frozen products. I transferred the crates to the garage to ensure they wouldn’t defrost too much. I then discovered the freezer trays weren’t sealed 😂🤦🏻‍♂️ so after a quick swap and mop, the oven trays filled with boiling water (cos they’re metal 😊), and were in, the process could begin.
But thanks. This was inspiring for what I have always found to be a daunting task. 😅😂

I had a similar small freezer for a while except my drawers were plastic coated wire. I used the hot water method a couple of times but it made a mess on my floor from all the dripping water so I quickly figured out another tactic. I had mine on a little rolling dolly so I would roll it out the front door & use my garden hose to spray it until all the ice was melted. Then dried it out & returned it inside.

No matter how you defrost it, don't damage the cold coils. Clean the door gasket and the front where the gasket seals too. Check the seal with the door closed for any gaps. Any leak will cause frost to form.

I believe if bleach or any harsh chemicals are used on the rubber seals , they will harden and no longer seal well . I have a 30+ year old refrigerator in good condition . However , after Covid hit , some " help " went crazy with bleach and other cleaners . It ate into the white painted finish and then into the metal . It has now started to rust where the paint is gone !

Hello. I enjoyed your video and your delivery, and I applaud you for trying to be informative, but I must comment on some of the "facts" that you stated in your video, and hopefully put the record straight? I repair and service fridges and freezers professionally. You mention that this freezer is not "frost free". This is a universally misunderstood term, and refers to the fridge section more than any freezer. It applies to most "American" style fridge freezers, and increasingly more UK appliances. Years ago all fridges worked by making the upper part of the back wall of the fridge cold, initially by passing the cooling pipes through a metal plate, and latterly by placing the cool pipes behind the plastic back wall of the fridge ("cool wall"). This was controlled by the thermostat and as such ice formed on the back wall and then defrosted in cycles, as required. This is perfectly normal. You can tell this type as it will have a hole for the defrost water to drain away, near the bottom of the back wall. The cold air produced will fall to the bottom of the fridge compartment as it is more dense than the warmer air in the compartment, and this cold air will build up and keep the food cool, typically between 1 and 5 degrees (where bacterial growth is at a minimum, without freezing). Frost Free fridges refer to a different method of cooling, where some of the freezing air that is produced by the freezer section is diverted through channels between the two sections, normally fan assisted, and is "dropped" into the fridge section. The fridge cannot freeze up (unless faulty), unlike the older style, and it is therefore labelled "Frost Free". The fridge in such an appliance is effectively passive, and is just a "box" which stores food and accepts cold air, and has no active cooling function. This is actually cheaper to produce in some cases and has obvious benefits and attractions to any potential customer.
The freezer that you have shown uses coolant within the shelf pipes to produce the cold. This system is more prone to "ice up" than other freezer designs, and often this is because the shelves, or baskets are overloaded with frozen food and air cannot circulate as it should...........there should always be an air gap between the top of any food and the shelf above........but people never do this! lol
I cringe every time I hear a customer say that they have defrosted their own freezer, usually as a result of hearsay or after viewing a TH-cam video. Let me explain........I've lost count of the number of freezers which have mutilated side walls because people use knives to scrape off ice. The evidence is always very easy to see. You were quite correct in pointing this out. The plastic wall used in a freezer, or fridge, is of a specific type and is "antibacterial" when it has a smooth surface. When any scraper, like the one that you showed, or abrasive is used then large to microscopic scratches appear, where bacteria are able to take hold and grow. This plastic is only antibacterial when smooth and any form of "ice scraping" will counteract this. It is also very easy on the type of freezer shelf shown in your video to damage the system by puncturing the shelf piping..........the coolant gas escapes, the compressor can pack up and the appliance is then often irreversibly damaged. You were ok to show this type of scraper used to pry ice from the cool shelves, but it should not be used to scrape ice from plastic walls........and people will do that.
It is far more common for freezers to have an evaporator, which does the cooling, built into the back wall rather than have cool shelves, and this will be hidden behind a plastic panel. The reasons why you should NEVER defrost using hot water will now become apparent. Firstly, the defrost process on most freezers is NOT just to rid ice from the shelves (as stated, very few are of the type in your video) but to rid ice from the evaporator behind the back wall...........this can become choked with ice build up (you may have a defrost heater issue?) and the freezer becomes very inefficient as a result. You will not defrost this using the hot water/steam method as it is not visible or accessible, and will take hours to defrost........and as you have demonstrated, most people will stop the manual defrost when they cannot see any more ice, missing the fact that ice may still be choking the evaporator. The other very important point is that by using steam you are INTRODUCING moisture, which will gather in hidden areas and will then freeze when the appliance is rebooted and you can be worse off than before you started!
THE ONLY CORRECT WAY TO CORRECTLY DEFROST A (FRIDGE) FREEZER IS TO SWITCH IT OFF AT THE MAINS, PLACE A TOWEL ON THE FLOOR, OPEN THE DOOR AND LEAVE IT FOR AT LEAST 24 HOURS (We recommend 48 hours). Although this may seem inconvenient, it will fully defrost all areas and components of the cooling system and will not introduce any moisture into the cavity, unless your kitchen is particularly humid. It will also allow the gas to settle and will give the compressor a rest. The bonus is that when you switch on again you will find, unless you have another fault, that your freezer, and fridge will now work again as they did when new..........you may even get that nice "freezing fog" in the freezer that you had in the beginning?
We recommend that every customer defrost their fridge/freezer once a year..........and suggest that summer holidays are a good time...........manage the food for weeks in advance by using it up until almost empty........before going on holiday switch off and leave the door(s) open. Simple!
Keep up the good work with the videos.............This was not meant to be personal, but to be informative instead.

Once you have dried the frezzer completely, I put glycerin over all sufaces. When you defrost it next time with just a little steam like this video shows the ice drops away easily. I will say the shelves with all those lines are a pain but it still helps. All the sides and tops aee a joy to watch it drop off.
My concern now is glycerin is now sold as a vegetable glycerin so i need to check it out. Fingers crossed 🤞 ive alsi just read a plain flavoured vegetable oil does the same thing, hence me on this site.

Thanks for the tips! ❤ Last year, my top drawer froze shut 😅 I was still able to open it with a bit of strength, so I thought to myself "I need to defrost it soon" 😅😅😅 but I just moved out to my own house and never did this and had no idea how to do it. The instruction manual says to empty the freezer and leave it open overnight, but with hot weather and no second freezer, I didn't want to risk leaving my food out all night. This video popped up and it looked so easy! I decided to go ahead and defrost it immediately! It took a good hour and a half with changing the cooled down water for hot water every 15 minutes. But with minimal scraping, I don't mind at all! I'm glad my freezer is perfectly clean and clear of ice! It's the first time in 4 years I defrosted this freezer 😅 (I got it brand new when I moved!) But now I know how easy it is, I won't procrastinate when it's time to do it again! ❤

Great idea in theory, it may work for many but not for me. The trays in my freezer aren't one moulded piece. They are two bits that clip together so they would leak. I only have one washing up bowl that doesn't fit the shelf so that's not an alternative either. Glad my fridge is now a frost free one though, my next freezer will be too.

Honestly never thought of it before. My freezer compartment had lots of ice but this method seriously saved me from considering the long process of open defrosting (too impatient lol 😆).
Left the hot water for about an hour cause I wasn't sure if 15 mins was going to be enough for how thick the ice in my fridge was but honestly, one hour was probably too long, 30 mins would likely have done the trick.

Something I've noticed - - many of the TH-cam "defrost your freezer" VID's, show people pitching the chunks of ice or pouring out the former ice (now water) down the sink, etc. This is FREE H2O (at least you didn't have to pay for it in the conventional sense) and unless there is some reason I hadn't thought of, should go right into the garden, whether it be on the fruits & veggies or Wifey's flowers. The more build-up that's in your freezer, the better to put on your plants & such. This is exactly what the "gray water movement" is all about, heck if you're a bit anal about it, you could even wring your towels into the bucket to water them with every last drop. 🤪
Suggestion for f.avorite f.reezer f.ood (the 3 F's, ha-ha): Jimmy Dean's Breakfast Bowls! Jimmy Dean has always been known in the States as a fantastic breakfast sausage. However, when they started putting out these breakfast bowls, they were a GAME CHANGER, LOVE the damned things! 😍 Oh & anything Italian, Pizza, Meats and Seafood. Those are my favorite freezer food. Just one? Sorry, I couldn't do it.
Cheers to you from Aurora, Colorado (U.S.A.)!

      Why so callous?
Gray water is perfectly safe to reuse.
As long as you dont use it for things that need filtered water.
If I designed toilets, I would use the handwash water to fill the basin/tank of the toilet.
As long as water doesn't have heavy chemicals in it. Recapture and reuse would be great.
Just think of dry areas that have agriculture needs. Water conservation and reuse of non contaminated water is idea people do around the world.
READ MORE ON GREY WATER USES.
and you stay on books next time you feel like talking about people. You only show your ignorance.
