- Change is something most professionals are scared of, especially those with kids in school and mortgages to pay. The certainty of a stable career is hard to resist. It is difficult to disengage from a professional identity one spent years creating. A career change means a complete transformation - new job, new position, new employer - it’s a big deal! And it can lead to massive stress and worry. But career stagnation and monotony can also cause a lot of unhappiness.
There comes a point when we want to try out something radically different, which taps into our full range of talents. So, if you find yourself fantasising about a completely new career, and you have the energy, money and courage to reinvent yourself, my advice will be to go for it. Instead of day-dreaming, you have the choice to fill your career with excitement and purpose if you are willing to take a leap of faith with an uninhibited sense of wanderlust, curiosity and adventure.
Dr. Aditi Dubey who was previously an assistant professor in Centennial College! She is now a lecturer in the Centre of Applied English Studies, Faculty of Arts, The University of Hong Kong. Before being a educator she has also been a BBC Radio news presenter and reporter and also a flight attendant. She will share with us her experience and views regarding career change.

Truly amazing video. Im 25 and having a rough time with these thoughts . I've had a great career so far as a cook . Worked my way up quite fast, now i plan to do a 4yr degree for computer science. This is probably the hardest decision I've ever made in my life. It's really nice to know I am not alone.

I like the way you think ma'am. My dad's advice is to work and get vested and wait many years unhappy in a JOB I hate and retire! I keep telling him. No!!!!!. Everytime he speaks on things like this he make me think about rich dad poor dad.
At 38 now, I wonder I didn't see your video when I was struggling but now I'm here listening it AFTER I did a big change in myself, thank you! This is exactly the same reason I had to break my comfort-zone of 15 years to take step into evolving myself into next version (still going through). Although, I'm successful enough as freelancer but I have so much inside to share with the world and help them for solutions which is beyond my self-career.

Good & practical advise she gave as compared to those who tells "follow your passion". Half of the population don't know what their passion is.
You will feel the same boredom kicking in after few months. So follow your guts. Don't be afraid to change careers if you feeling strongly about it.
This, many years later, is so useful and inspiring. I want to change career and this explains what I felt for a while now.

Love that someone who switches careers as much as her is talking on the subject. I felt when she talked about her hopping like she was talking about me. In 11 years I've had 8 jobs, I'm 29 and sick of my job. I've gone up to the top and into different fields yet I'm never happy. I'm switching into a completely different job in about 12 days and I'm scared I'll fail at it. I have mortgages to pay.
I know the risk but my want is demanding for something new, to change my life around.
After watching this I feel very confident. Thank you.

I’m 34 and have been thinking about a career change where I’m no longer in the corporate world. I've been working as a writing tutoring and customer service/admin jobs since I was 25. I am not almost 32 and my husband has convinced me to try for the computer field as a tester as I wanted to change careers but wasn't sure what path to take. I have been learning slowly, but this lady really helps you decide to take the plunge.

I'm an electronic engineer, then I study a master degree in Marketing at 32 years old, today I've my own food business at 37 years old but now I'd like to work in the tourism industry, maybe adventure tourism. I love to travel, the adventure and meeting people from other cultures. People in Mexico don't understand why I change carrers, the think I'm crazy but I don't want to waste my life in a job I hate.

Im 33, I studied geology and I always hated it, but I stayed there because my parents was proud of me, the money was good, and I felt that I cant waste the years of study at the university. Now, Im working as an industrial engineer because my ex-boyfriend got me that job and I loved it, but I always feel like I dont belong there because Im a geologist. Im thinking about study and work at the same time. I searched "career change at 30" only to encourage myself to do it. Should I do it?

I must be only person who doesn't mind boredom, monotony, and stagnation. I don't care about moving up the ladder. I've been in the same job for almost 30 years now, at age 50, I'll probably die there, and that doesn't bother me one bit. I have trouble relating to this material.

Iam 30, Software Engineer with Bachelors in industrial engineering and management..have around 7+ years of work experience...I feel stagnated...I feel I am doing repeatitive job... that doesn't exites me..and with financial responsibilities it even sucks..

yeah guys I also decided a career change as I want to go into international politics but become a foreign national - so I am building a network of people in my field - I started and enrolled for BA International Relations - currently I am working for a multi billion rand firm listed on the JSE but yet it sucks as I am 6 months in this role doing the same duties day in and day out

This woman is undoubtedly an ENFP in the Myers Briggs type indicator. Extroverted intuition is novelty seeking. ENFPs make great teachers and pick new things up quickly. She is also likely an Enneagram 7.

@@aditidubey5519 I'm an INTP, and according to a typology system called Socionics I am your supervisor (my supervisor being an ESTP.) So my strongest function (introverted thinking) is your weakest function. But like you I have strong extroverted intuition. So I can spot ENFPs in a crowd. Tony Robbins is an ENFP too. When I hear you guys speaking as an INTP I am constantly filtering what you say through my introverted thinking (Ti) to determine whether it is true or not, which makes me your supervisor. Congratulation! What you have said rings true and has already helped me alot. I was a pilot for 10 years but got sick of it, like you did flight attendant. I now enjoy my job as a call centre agent much more at this time. I have long considered myself a failure for my career breakdown but thanks to your talk I feel blessed that I could soak up so much growth in aviation and then do something totally different where I get to grow even more. Like you my extroverted intuition (En) seeks novelty and variety. This is not the case though for the more common sensor judgers (SJs) who seek stability and security, like my ISFJ (enneagram 6) mother. I encourage you to google search "enneagram 7," your enneagram type. The enneagram is a fast growing, very true personality system.

I am currently pursuing my PhD but now I have started feeling that I should do something else for a career like I want to do a PhD but I don't think I want to have teaching as a career. But I often think is it a good idea or not.

To paraphrase, Aditi said "don't let the naysayers tell you you can't do something, they don't have to live with the consequences, you do".
But the corollary is the same way I feel as a nearly 30-year-old trying for a kid when she tells me to not be afraid of going after more. So if I chose to study full time to become a doctor, how will I pay the mortgage and raise a kid? Adati telling me to go after more doesn't have to suffer the consequences of no income for eight years...
I don't want to sound like a negative Norman but I'm just not convinced, and I'm sure I'd like to be.
I understand. I had to save up and wait for a long time too. 10 years between getting a bachelor's degree n master's qualification. And another 10 for a PhD. All the saving up, planning and was done during the 10 years in each case.
Doctor seems pretty difficult though not impossible. Is there any ancillary areas which might interest you? e.g. Biochemistry, physio therapy, technicians, pathology etc?
Are you passionate about treating & helping people or is it for the money? If it is the latter, you might as well invest the time & money in an MBA.
But if your primary goal/passion is the former + science of medicine, then go for medicine or any of the ancillary areas of medicine.
You're living under the paradigm that money comes from a job. Most people that build wealth don't have jobs, they invest in some form of property. Not just physical property like Real Estate, but intellectual properties like writing a book, or perhaps starting a simple business being the only supplier for a very niche product (this can often be done out of a garage). Replacing income can be much easier than people think. From there if you spend your time setting up systems that others can run, then you can hire employees to run the system while you pursue your next endeavor.
in short, don't try to become a doctor because you think doctors get paid well (comparatively, they don't). The only reason you should pursue being a doctor is if it is for the fulfillment of your soul. To that end you first need to change your inner conversation from "I can't afford that", to "how can I afford that".
A few books that can be helpful:
The Millionaire Next Door - This book destroyed the stereotype that millionaires live in mansions up on the hill. Instead, those are usually high paid professionals that maintain very little personal wealth like doctors and lawyers. The real millionaires are wealthy because they live very normal lives and value the security of wealth over ostentatious displays of wealth.
Rich Dad Poor Dad - An in-depth and fascinating case study of one millionaire that is a perfect example of the lessons from The Millionaire Next Door.
The Four Hour Work Week - Author Tim Ferriss is one of my personal favorites.
A life hacker that: won a national Sanshou Kickboxing tournament in China with one month of training on a dare, placed third in the world in a Ballroom dancing competition after six months of training with an elite performer, gained 32 pounds of solid muscle in one month through hacking his biochemistry with workouts that take less that 15 minutes, catapulted his first book to #1 on the best seller list by hacking the system, and many other crazy accomplishments.
He is a master of finding the 20% of the work that needs to be done to achieve 80% of the success (Pareto's Law).

"You need a degree, go get one". Sure, no problem. Easier said, than done. Realistically, some things, are just out of one's capability, so it's best, just to stay put. "If they can do it, we can do it". Not true. This is a naive general statement, that gives false hope.

I had a relatively successful career as a designer for 8+ years and 4-year degree, decided that it didn’t align with my values anymore because of the wasteful and vain industry I was working in. I got my MBA, and switched tracks to working as a Business Analyst in the clean energy sector for a large company with one of the best employee satisfaction. I’m happier than ever, and I’ve been happy along the way until my priorities changed.. Follow your heart, plan with your mind, and you will find alignment. 🫶🏼
