It's funny how companies are "scrambling" to fill the 6 million jobs in the USA in 2018 (more jobs than people unemployed).
Yet applicants are still required to a have 2 years experience in the field and a 4 year degree for "entry level" jobs, that only really require a 6 month certification and pay less than 40k a year with no benefits...

I hear this often, but anecdotally, it's always case-by-case. In the past, I've spent about as much time networking as applying online. Roughly 50/50. I've scored four professional jobs by applying online and one by networking. I know how it's supposed to work in theory; I've heard things like this from my parents since childhood. It's just not my experience. I've had dozens upon dozens of conversations like she describes, and people are usually friendly and everything, but then I hear some mix of the following: "If we have any positions, they would be posted online. Check the website." "You're doing all the right things; something should pop up soon." "I've got your info; I'll be sure to share it." "I'll let you know if I hear anything."

Now when you apply online, they have you take the Wonscore test. I feel it's unfair to give a personality test and than say you didnt meet the job requirements before even meeting with me. And ONE of those tests was a 72 (seventy-two) multiple choice personality evaluation!! I started, I really did, but got so frustrated I just exited out. :-O Some companies just make us jump through too many hoops. But don't misunderstand, I could see where a personality evaluation MIGHT be useful if I were going into (for example) psychology or something, but for basically simple office clerical work? I go over the numbers that show why I don't expect to come close to my old salary as that was a 12 year income growth, and explain that I bring ideas from my experience that would help their company.

I totally disagree. I've been a hiring manager for over 30 years and a job seeker several times. There is no one ideal way to get a job. And this idea of networking that every management "expert"pushes results in remarkably few jobs and is deeply unrealistic and not something people should keep promoting. It's the way some people want it to be and think it should be and they feel good about it. But I know that, personally, every time some barely known person or a friend of a friend wants to suck away large volumes of my time to talk all about them so they can "network", it's nothing but annoying. Networking wastes huge amounts of time. People are busy and have work to do and lives. Requiring and prescribing that suddenly the whole world has to connect and spend energy in this way fits some weird worldview they have but is unfair and counterproductive in many ways. And linked in is horrible and a trend I would like to see die down - An absurd requirement to find work. Why does anyone have to blast their life history in detail to the entire world to find work? And we waste way to much time with artificial relationships and meaningless interaction in personal social media as it is without it forced into the professional world in this manner. People should use multiple methods of job hunting and no one should rely on networking (Aka pestering) their way in to a job. Personally I think the old fashioned way of advertise a job to the public, people apply, the best candidates are selected, a screening process ensues and the job is filled is the best and most objective and efficient and least wasteful. Yes it doesn't have the touchy feely modern vibe of networking and fit the model of the same people who think
Every work space should be an open floor plan with plenty of ping pong tables and bean bags chairs etc. And it involves some hard work for hiring managers, but it's objective, efficient and equally open to all, doesn't involve how well someone can socialize or schmooze, doesn't waste loads of unrelated people's time and energy and patience, doesn't overtax friendships and professional relationships, doesn't rely on artificiality and an endless, desperate "conversation" with anyone remotely connected to the work you want, and is truly fair. These management "gurus" need to stop pushing this message of network network social media and network. It's a backward, nasty agenda and should be only a very small part of most people's job hunt.

Excellent dissection and disposal of the "just do enjoyable networking" philosophy. It's high time the "experts" get called out on this soft and squishy non-strategy, especially if they are accepting checks for telling you to "go network", often the last option left in their failed approaches (Networking= Nothing Else Tends to be Working).
I'm a little surprised though that you recommend the opposite extreme-- namely, hunting and pecking through posted jobs that represent such a small percentage of what is out there and which all get armies of respondents that bury the well qualified or at least reasonably qualified and adaptable candidates. Someone with a rich background will find themselves forever a round peg trying to wedge themselves into all these square holes in the form of online postings. And forget about designing a position around you to maximize use of your talents.
I'd welcome hearing about in between approaches that are viable. I doubt that in your seasoned savvy 30 year experience you "Monstered" your way into every career step you took.

    • @tylerkucher7895
      @tylerkucher7895 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

I find it funny you mock the video and yet their was no alternative given. Job postings do not work. I understand you do not want leeches wasting you time. The one thing that people including myself do is we may brush aside others who are asking for a moment of your time and spend how much time wasting it. Majority may be not worth your time but, that does not mean all of them are. The minority will create an impact that will make it worth while and change both lives.
Applying to a job online does not work anymore. The evidence of this is millions of people have given up finding a job and given up on society. The problem is people have to sneak their way in since the alternative is almost pointless. Please tell me your point. I hate the way things are setup now.

However, this does not mean that it’s ok to not send a response, most likely you should hear back but via a message from the applicant system not the recruiter managing the job opening. Nice lady and she certainly appears to be sincere, but I disagree with her on many issues. The last two jobs I've had came from responding to ads. She also didn't address the issue of 'I'm starving/have bills to pay. I don't have time to do all this evaluation'. She's correct, if I'm looking at an ad and it's for a CEO position, I won't bother to reply because there is no way I'm qualified. But when I was in the job search mode, if I had one or two qualifications, I would apply. You want to get past the computer evaluation of your resume is simple - you use the terms that the ad uses. If it says 'must have experience with Notifier alarm panels' - hopefully you have this experience. In the resume you send in you state EXACTLY those words, but let's say your experience is with Honeywell panels instead, you include in your resume that you have experience with alarm panels.
This lady goes on to say that the job you get isn't/doesn't have to be your 'forever' job. But hey, if it is, bravo. I work with a couple people who have over 25 years with this one employer. They have moved up over the years, but they were treated right, they liked what they were assigned to do, so they stayed.
I disagree that you shouldn't put out a TON of resumes. It's a numbers game, the more you are out there, the better your chances. The picky job seeker is going to have a very hard time, they are putting one bullet in the gun at a time and hoping to hit the bullseye. The 'eager' seeker, is putting in an ammo magazine and firing away - which do YOU think will have better odds at hitting the bullseye??

You are right. You CAN get a job through the ads. It's certainly true. However, as you said, it's a numbers game. And if you have a well established network built over time, it can cut down your search time. When you apply exclusively online, you do indeed face many obstacles. It does require many many submissions, over and over. So why not talk to your contacts and see what jobs may not be advertised? Why not get some help getting your resume shown to the hiring manager? This of course is not a quick process. Which is why I say - always be growing your network. Because you never know.

I see a lot a disagreeing in the comments, but she's right that networking is the fastest way to land. Statistically that's a fact. However, there are faster ways to network than spending so much time evaluating. Strategically written emails sent to LinkedIn connections who work at the target company can get real results very quickly. Develop a rapport with a very quick first email, when they respond you can start asking for the info you need about who to send a resume to other than applying online like everyone else. No need for "informational interviews", just quick conversations is all you need to expand your network. She makes a great point that everyone you talk to you should ask who else you should be talking to. What do you wish you knew before you started is also a good question, but you can also just google that exact question for your profession and get a ton of great info.

re: Develop a rapport...and start asking.... That's if they respond and converse. Amazingly, most LinkedIn first level connections aren't interested in much more than maintaining the inanimate stamp collection of profiles they have and feel put upon when asked to converse unless it is simply and purely a peer-to-peer collegial discussion of a topic or issue of mutual interest and equal benefit to both. The new practice --also coach-induced-- of sales by stealth has raised the defensive guards up a mile high when members are approached in such a manner. The well has become very tainted if not poisoned altogether. Silence or monosyllabic responses can predominate over any helpful response. Definitely give it a try, but keep expectations low and use plenty of other outreach methods.

If you don't have family that works at the job or the manager isn't your spouse then good luck. All this is useless information. That guy was so desperate when looking for a job he BOUGHT his way into interviews. I am sure he got hired at one but he had to go to 40 different places to get 1 job. That saids alot

it is easier to open your own company than to get hired in some fields. I am a java full stack developer with 20+ years of experience. Tried very hard to get a job in Canada for 2 years. Go for it. You are fortunate to have a marketable product, "better games" than some company products.
Of course you have to market that "better" product. That may take some time to produce results.
Would not a guaranteed minimum income be a great enabler.?
Look into the social need for something called Universal (i.e. unconditional) Basic Income.

Go to nearest technical college in a manufacturing district and take a short 2 - 6 month course in CNC machining, or programming CNC. You will be hired before you finish school. That's where the companies fill their openings; at the school. Stop the cycle and enjoy "Cycle Time" 4 hours out of an 8 hour workday! You have plenty of time while the machine is running. You just need to be nearby. You can learn this; anybody can. You will be uplifted after just one week.

I feel like making myself known to employees of a company I am applying to is a fast track to being blacklisted off the bat. I could strike gold and get a good reaction but I think it is more likely that I will be seen as cocky and a time waster and I think that after a couple of these attempts (from myself and other applicants) those people would simply lock their accounts to prevent time wasters. This seems clever but it wont work for long before companies put policies in place to stop it.
I feel that this along with most of the alternative job seeking techniques would be more likely to work if you are already an established professional, or a grad who was top in their class. For most of us 'average' people we would be met with a cold indifference.
Also in the political climate these days I cannot help but wonder how many people will be able to make it into offices with unwarranted mystery packages. Offices I know locally have security doors guarded by fierce secretaries to prevent stunts like this.
It seems nice and I will certainly give it some thought but I wont hold my breath.

Lukas spent $$...a finacial investment with a 25% return to maybe get back his $$. I'm creative, bold and extroverted, but I'm not going to spend $$ on strangers to possibly, maybe get a chance to be considered valuable enough to take the time to talk to about a position I'd be an amazing fit for. The career talk stuff is a bit out of touch as well..I mean let's cut the BS. People want to work. Preferably in a field you love and have passion for, but a job is needed to survive for most people today and sitting around and chatting with people after taking all kinds of time and energy to do all this research is a nice thought in theory but it puts even more advantage on the side of the employer and if we keep up these current attitudes of giving more and more fir less and less, soon there will be no reason for emoyers to attempt any kind of self initiated interaction with job candidates then maybe to deliver on anything at all. Sorry, but when it's getting to the point that you need to buy a small chance at a business's notice with doughnuts and KGB style resume delivery the scales have already taken a serious tilt and not to the advantage of the job seeker....which personally speaking, is my #1 concern, as a job seeker...I'll do a fantastic job for a good company, but it needs to be mutually beneficial and not just me begging for a chance at whatever they decide to toss out to their advantage only. A good job should be well valued but so should a good employee and somehow that seems to have lost along the way over the past 2 decades. I get the desire of employers and hiring managers to make the hiring process as easy for them as possible....I have held a hiring manager position and I'm pretty sure that part of the reasom managers of any sort that also hire and fire are paid so much more than the direct reports is because it's a big part of their job to do the work it takes to find, vet and hire quality staff that deserves to feel like a person that brings something valuable to the table while working for the company on their true professional merit...not because bribes or personal sales gimmicks that work to my advantage at the cost of the potential candidate should be expected in return for a chance at being noticed.
