The issue with SOD is total lack of content, all the guilds are dead, people are just raid logging, I have alts in 4 different large raiding guilds, they are active 2 evenings a week for an hour, rest of the time they are empty. SOD feels like a pretty big flop it gave players far to little content.
Just to let you know, I never played wow until now, but season of discovery is noob friendly because of the lv 25 cap, less items, dungeons, skills, talents, zones to learn, makes it a lot easier to get into wow. Started playing because of Rav videos too
for the first 2 weeks. since then its been a farm fest that will totally destroy any chance of a decent economy. Lv 22 mana pots foing for 1g30s. people paying 20-80g for a pre bis item off the ah. I bet DFT will go for gold cap in a gdkp

@@neilbecker1140 depends on the healer spec, no dps caster should need mana pots. priests wont need mana pots, rdruids wont, rpally is horrendous anyway. so no not really. only needed consumable would be maybe a FAP if the raid is low dps
I love wrath, but what killed it for me was the player base. I came back and leveled a shammy to max right before Trial of the Crusade dropped, and found it an absolute nightmare to gear up without a guild. Practically no one was running normal heroics, and even though Heroic + was suppose to be a way to catch up to current raiding you would have people refuse to play with people who were not at least semi Nax geared because they didn't want to "waste there time." Got into 1 group in 3 hours, saw the sea of GDKPs and decided that it wasn't worth the headache.
sounds like you were just on the wrong server, not all servers are the same on wrath, windseeker for instance rarely ever has gdkp's advertised as well as room to progress w/o having to be in a guild mostly due to the new icc dungeons that get you quick gear which allows you to get into the harder dungeons and even some raids. I have multiple geared toons with majority of them doing it without a guild in the first place. I'd recommend giving windseeker a try if you are still interested in wrath, community is pretty solid there as well.
I played regularly so didn’t have this issue myself as I had a guild, but seeing all the gdkps made me depressed. Feel for you man, it’s a shame what the game became. What annoys me is people in sod trying to turn the game into that direction. I don’t get how people haven’t realized that gdkps were long run awful for the game when they became the norm rather than exception.
Unfortunately GDKPs were the only way to play Wotlk without finding a raiding guild which is harder than getting into a gdkp as a carry without connections
People tend to go on large mass servers with the streamers on it because they think more people = more fun and things to do. But those streamer servers usually attract all those min/max gimps who think this game is a job. That’s why I’ve always chosen medium pop servers since classic came out in 2019. The player base still is more than enough (Vanilla was created for 2-4k players and the “medium” populated classic or SOD servers have 10k). That is plenty and more than enough and while you still have min/max idiots it was in my experience never to the extent that people describe on streamer realms.
All of these comments spot on. Wrath Classic imo was ruined by sweatlords and GDKPs. I actually had to make my own guild and we killed Yogg 1light (which i am proud of) got full Ulduar Bis on my prot Warrior, and people started to sign off on the raids and join GDKPs as they are "easy loot" so the community who wants to progress seems to be very little now, its basically the same in Era but worse since the prices on AH are insane.... basically in order to keep up you need to do GDKPs or buy gold.... example 800g for a titans flask on my server Firemaw EU.
Wrath was good fun, enjoyed the launch and tried the raids, but ngl the story and theme which are excellent overshadow the fact that its just raid logging and one raid at that there is no other content to do outside of logging on once a week to clear a raid
I mean... a TON of Wotlk Guilds died over night when Blizzard released the "road map" and you could see Cata coming out in the Summer. The xpac was already overstaying its welcome. And for the sake of milking out everything else, they have thrown Wotlk and the future Cata playerbase under a bus... I mean... 4+ more months of ICC ? What ? In what world will any server be left standing ?

SoD has started a fundamental change to the social aspect of gaming. More comradery, fun, and collaboration between factions. On my server every friday night my guild and an ally guild take ~20 people to Wetlands and try to take control of the docks for a few hours. Each side is streaming and having fun, saying how great it is we are out there doing world pvp. It all seems in good spirits too. Dancing, having fun, not taking it too seriously. Even the raid we 9man and dont really req anything beyond shadow protection potions. I would love to see your perspective from Alliance and your guild. I find the social part to be incredibly interesting.
Didn't notice it on my main, leveling them up. Now I'm leveling alts, the hunter bots are everywhere, I particularly the southern barrens is crawling with these awful hunter bots who I see often meleeing with boars, they die alot so not very efficient.

Togc was way too long and now with icc and the damage buff it feels like what’s the point in getting gear if we can just get 40% buff and beat the bosses. Plus I’m 4th up for shadowmourne on my warrior and at that point I could give a fuck about it. So games dead to me. Also no one’s pvping finding a partner is near impossible especially after the fucked the LFG and you can’t que for PvP the same way anymore. At least that’s my experience.
i 200% agree with everything you said. my guild broke up at the start of togc so i took a raiding hiatus and just pvpd. TOGC is a joke of a raid tier, and you ar correct after blizz took away the pvp LFG posting, it's near impossible to find regular partners. after clearing ICC H pre nerf, there's literally nothing pulling me back to the game, and arena vs all the shadowmournes is honestly just cancer. The Ashenvale event meta specifically includes PVP to win the event now.. people are fighting back other faction raids during fights pretty much every time. I feel like the criticism about Ashenvale being pve only is like a month old.
Yeah exactly. It seems like it took a while but people realised that if you defend certain spots your chances of winning increase. Although I do sometimes get events where raid are just trying to run from A to B to C but it seems those are now failing more often than they win
Ashenvale was never pve only. people who had that idea in their heads are objectively speaking; idiots. the pre-event phase literally fosters world pvp, but people like to pretend the effort going in to actually get the event itself to trigger is not part of the event. one could argue that the event itself (kill 3 lieutenants + general) it lacking in design, there are definitely better ways to go about it, but to say it includes no pvp is downright false. plenty a time people have gone out of their way to go defend a lieutenant to buy time in order to get a win, or defend the final general to clutch a win.
Sod is just peak win right now. I'm super pumped for 40 when hopefully they can do more class balancing and we have more tools to work with. I have 3 raiding characters now and it's not been that hard to keep up with them
Season of discovery was honestly a stroke of genius. It didn’t come easy, though. Gotta drag blizzard kicking and screaming, but once we get them to where they need to be, they absolutely knock it out of the park. Classic, hardcore, and now SOD. It’s been such a blast, and I feel like we’re far from the end of it.
Sadly history keeps repeating itself. The forums are already filled with posts about: Premade battlegrounds ruining it for casuals, flyhacking bots blasting inflation, worldbuff meta required or you're benched. 500g+ BiS items at 25.. Boosting.. GDKP.. Blizzard does nothing but farm money from these things, which is sad. I wish they cared to make a good game without creating toxic metas 24/7. Oh and yeah, you don't get banned for buying gold...
The more I play sod the more I want to play it. It's way better than I expected it to be, and I'm shocked by how much they got right. Capping the levels at certain breakpoints and creating entire new endgames was genius. It's not perfect, mostly from a pvp perspective, but I love it.
7:26 you say that the total cap for a server in 2004 was 4,000. this is vastly wrong and its a number you see people throw out a LOT there was less than 250 servers in 2006 when TBC was launched and the total number of players subscribed to WoW was 10,000,000. if the servers were all capped at 4,000 then you would have needed 2,500 servers instead of the 250 we had. the truth is the concurrent number of players on a server at the same time was likely 4,000 but the total number of active players with characters on each server was likely closer to 40,000.
Having played my fair share in classic, it barely felt like a reason to return. Went for a nostalgic tour on a NE and human to 15 before realizing I had way too many other games to play than rehashing old content spiced with runes and remade dungeons/pvp.
As an era player, I've actually seen a lot of retail players come into era after trying seasonal. I've actually been seeing about 1-2 new retail players a week!
That’s the way it is when new Xpac come out. We wear the gear from our nice raids until we hit a new level cap, exchanging maybe a slot or 3 and then that’s it.
@@Burlehmangus the blue you get from a dungeon quest typically doesn’t replace your Naxx 40, Sunwell, or ICC gear. I’m not saying you just never replace your gear lol, just while leveling
SoD is so weird. My classic guild split right down the middle, half of us staying behind to farm ICC content level up alts and do ruby sanctum, the rest left for SoD day and didn't come back. I levelled to 25 in SoD, did BFD and some ashenvale in the first two weeks never looked back... felt like a half baked vanilla to me, but people love it. Clearly its a big win for blizzard though, nominal dev team supporting hundreds of thousands of sustained subscriptions on 20 year old content.

SOD was a blast. Quit end of last year since I was travelling for a full month but dam it was fun. Would love to get back into it next phase but I'm afraid it will suck up too much of my time with a dog and a lady at home.
The issue with the numbers is whether it accounts for alts. lvl 25 raid makes it so easy to raid on alts as well as a main. I for instance, have 3-4 chars i raid multiple times a week so the numbers may be higher than the actual number of players
@@adamnagel7436 no it doesn't. that's your subjective opinion. people have never had trouble filling raids even with 40 people. the only problem with 40 man raids is player attendance consistency and even that is only a small bump on the road.
WotLK had run its course with me, personally, within the first week when I tried getting into a dungeon group. Too many elitists demanding ridiculous gs for such an easy dungeon really put a sour taste in my mouth, that I couldnt get out. I know that there are plenty of them in SoD too but I haven't had enough of a problem getting into BFD for it to ruin anything for me yet.
lfd i didn't have that issue, if i get kicked oh well, you can run normal, gear up the ICC dungeons on normal aren't hard drop nice stuff, most heroics are very easy except ICC ones have gear check. To bad you had that experience, it happens do hope you come back and try again, maybe find nice guild to help you gear.
I've been playing WoW for about 16/17 years or so, and this genuinely has felt the best it's been for a long time - mostly due to the amount of options we have to play like mentioned (Retail/SoD/Vanilla/Wrath) & now Retail is back to a decent enough state I'm loving how things are in both Classic and Retail.
I've usually* been a Retail player who just plays Classic in the downtime, and SoD seems like it's gonna cater to that more than ever. Very excited for the rest of the phases, and I've not stopped raiding yet. *I skipped a bunch of SL patches to just play TBC instead.
I've been a filthy casual with SoD but my buddies are running 3-4 toons each raid lockout. They also need to enforce faction balance on PvE realms, Wild Growth(US) seems to be getting worse.
Hi Willie, thanks for the great content. I think you are MASSIVELY underestimating the player population in SOD though. As BFD is 10 man there is a huge number of pugs taking place - pugs usually mean no logs. I believe the numbers you've stated would be close to double.
Once my old guild got HLK they hung it up. Probably similar to many people. It's either off season or not going into Cata. Not many value Ruby Sanctum as content.
Honestly, besides Ashenvale being so buggy it has been a good event on my server. Yah first couple weeks it was a race and over instantly, but after that we started to see people playing D and not just rushing it. It brings a bunch of people to the zone and makes for a good time. Nothing like wiping the other faction and going on to the win. A lot of coordination getting balanced groups at each spawn / to play D.
I think that poll favors retail players. Id bet lots of classic players don’t follow the World of Warcraft channel because they identify it as retail, which is fair. That makes it even crazier that classic still got more votes overall
SoD at the current cap doesn't require all the pre-raid BiS gear collecting, dungeons, keys, etc. like normal level cap raiding. But is SoD bringing in "new" players or did it just steal players from the other Classic realms?
Loving sod, firat time in ages i ha e multiple alts, playing with a proper guild that is actually social rather than just raid logging. Always people for groups, instances and raids as well as just open world nonsense. Great times.

really sucks for anyone looking for a challenge though... sure its nice for you boomers with 8 wives, 19 children, 4 jobs and a mortgage to worry about, but those of us who enjoy spending perhaps a whole night in a raid playing with our mates, it really sucks that the raid is done in sub 30 minutes. when someone says "raid night" usually what most people picture in their head is 40 people standing around in MC waiting for Dave to come back from the toilet so we can do our 4th attempt on Executus after slogging through the other bosses for 1-2 hours. BFD raid is nothing but a glorified dungeon.
I stopped playing in the middle of TBC, did the first phase of Wrath, and starting playing SoD when I came out. I can tell a lot of Wrath people came to SoD because so many people are asking me for my Gear Score! 😂
I think wotlk has sort of been taken over by the sweaty players as well, who force most casuals not to take part in things. Tanks that run through dungeons as fast as possible, heavy critics in random DF PUGs looking through logs to confirm the amount of interrupts everyone is doing, demanding crazy GS's to take part in litetally anything...whilst SOD has been a lot more casual friendly and generally just a little less toxic. Still happens (saw someone demanding a GS for DM the other day) but its just less so. No-one wants to come home from work, log on to play a game and chill only to get yelled at by some random a**hole that takes this way to seriously and has been logged on for the last 14 hours. If there is another, less toxic and less hostile option, people will just naturally float towards that one. I know I did.
LFM BFD GDKP HAVE 7/7 EXP, WB, CONSUMES, GS UNDER 400 = BLACKLIST, NEED WARR WITH EPIC SWORD, HUNTER WITH EPIC CROSSBOW, PRIEST WITH EPIC STAFF, SUB 15 MINUTES RUN. CHECKING LOGS.

As soon as cata classic was announced I quit Wrath. It just felt like their was no point without a permanent wrath server. There are so many quests in the early zones that did not get finished until Wrath or BC that will be no longer accessible again. Just as an example, OG Mudsprocket will just not exist in ANY version of wow anymore.
SOD took wrath out tbh my server is dead until like 5 ST nothing happening during the day anymore kinda sucks but i get it. hopefully server mergers for cata?

These population stats based on logs are not a great indicator for this version of the game. As an alt-oholic, SoD has been absolutely devouring my (free) time. With only lvl 25 cap, I did BFD with 5 characters so far. I imagine there are more people like me with multiple characters, so I'm guessing the average is at about 2 characters per account who raided, at least, which would skew the stats for how many people are actually playing. But it sure feels like a lot of people. The big servers are active 24/7.
I hope we will get a rerun of the original trilogy again, in the future. Could possibly be our SoD characters. But then we have the question of, how will the runes for abilities we naturally learn change? But thats quite far out in the future still :)
Warlock seems to be the least played on both my servers! Not sure if that is the case or if it's coz I'm always looking out for them since you hyped them up pre release! Lol, more fear breakers are coming next phase so I will once again not be starting one.... and enjoying my warrior. Really bummed about warrior popularity right now tho, and worry about the future. We will undutably be nerfed hard unless they do something about caster scaling in end game during phases.

thankfully none of my guilds in wrath died since we have icc hm on farm, we all leveled characters on SoD but we got bored of the content super quick (hopefully that changes next season), I guess competitive players will continue to raid log as always on both or just wrath until cata drops.
Phases take too long, I quit WotLK before phase 2 even began because it took so long. My Paladin tank was full BIS for both AoE gold farming and raiding, but there was nothing left to do between p1 and 2
That's good tho, you can play the game, get bis and play something else until new phase is released I would absolutely hate playing wow 356 days a year
Try out another character then, Warlocks are fun. You can level it up in 3-4 days. Are you exalted with Silverwind sentinels ? That takes a bit of time and WSG grind
45 min raid spoiled me over the holiday break. Got to 11/12hm ICC and I just cant care enough to go sit through a 4 hour ICC clear anymore just to kill H LK.
if SoD wasn't out , I might be playing wotlk still. but my main "finished the game". all my goals are met, no progress to be made unless playing a game mode I don't really enjoy / need to coordinate with 9-19 other players to even engage in. I'd argue I'd be playing at a maybe 33% chance. In vanilla classic, I made my own goals with crafting epic BS sword tied to reputation of dark iron + I could grind DM:E for the book, arcanite and gold. nothing like that exists in Wotlk, everything is tightly designed you can't really solo stuff AND get progress done on your character.
I would like some minor reworks to loot, quest loot, professions, and of course talents. Loot: The open world drop rates suck. What also sucks is that sometime the only you choice you have for MANY levels is main hand only. Take that away or add more one handed options. Quest loot: Just more of it. Sometimes you can do 15-20 quests and not get a single reward. Boring. Professions: More to mae would be nice at all phases. More greens and blues that would actually be useful. Make it fun and refreshed. Not just a few out of a raid. Perahsp I missed some? Talents: So many bad talents. Sure, talents placement is bad, but what I am talking about for example is the balance druid tree, where you have Omen of Clarity. To get that talent one has to spend four talents in the ballance tree that only boosts physical damage. That should be tweaked to 1,2,3,4 or 2,4,6,8 % increased damage in all forms, for both casters and physical. Things like that.
SOD is what classic should have been from the start, for me anyway. Working specs, forced faction balance for pvp realms and new content! (well, sorta) - it is great!
Thanks for great video! Just about the WotLK players drop off - those 2 lowest resets were Christmas, so it visually looks worse than it is and the last slight bump up might be Ruby Sanctum release. Still I'm sure wotlk is now going to just drop players as the expansion is done.
a statistic only based on logs is naturaly very flawed. On my server (chaos bolt eu), 1 out of 12 BFD pug runs were logged. In retails this is even more often the case, nobody cares about normal/heroic logs at this point and only a very smalll part of the playerbase is running mythic or raiding at all.
I just don't get why they're making the 1-60 part so long in SoD. 7-8 months between the release of the server and end game is just crazy. Feel like these low level caps should just be a short temporary thing, but at the moment i feel as if it's atleast twice as long as it ought to be. As for the low-level raids i don't quite care too much about it, would rather they left em as end game content.
I think cata suffers from the fact that WoW had been out for over 5 years (both OG and Classic), and that a lot of people’s lives change over 5 years. For me, i quit in cata because i started grad school. WoW was managable fun in undergrad but now it was time to focus. WC3 fans defeated Arthas, and felt like a good point to move on. Same thing is happening now, although SoD being amazing is probably making the problem look worse then it is 😂
Plenty of players like me will have ditched wrath/cata classic in favour of SOD. Cata classic will just be retail lite. Which is fine if you want that, but I don't.
I dont think people want "Easy fast" raids this is a Raid for level 25 as the game progresses the Raids will develop more mechanics what did you expect from a level 25 raid 10 mechanics on each boss with our 17 talents? You have to not look at this in a vacuum
the biggest let down for wotlk classic players is not wotlk era so no really a point to continue playing it . I was hoping for it despite the low chance it exists and when it was confirmed i just stoped playing it and waited for SoD now if i wanna do wotlk content i gotta resort to the private servers wich allways have a decent population
I got all proto drakes shadowmourn Bis ribbon 🎀 on my DK he will sit as a accomplishment of what I could not do in 2008 and I’m just gona sit out for cata and play SoD tell somthing else comes for classic
All Wrath characters are moving on to Cataclysm this year, unless enough people let Blizzard know that they want an era server. I was just in Wrath today and there are still a fair amount of people in it, but definitely Season of Discovery is hotter right now. Excellent videos, thumbs up!
Yeah, some servers have started to die but others are still highly populated luckily in wotlk so i'm still mainly playing wrath. Got a level 25 char in SoD but then stopped playing after that as I was getting bored compared to wrath raiding/arena content. How about you? :)
@@OrionStarzz My guild did ICC 25m HC and Ruby Sanctum 25m HC (first kill) in less than four hours. WoTLK is dead and on farm. Half a year of this is not worthy of a subscription. They need to do something better with SoD or I'll play something else. No one likes doing dead content forever.

As a 32 years old daddy I resubbed after 5 years just to play SoD! I hope they will go this way. I really would like to see Hearthglen as useful zone/raid, tunnel betwen Searing Gorge and Blasted Lands, Timbermaw Hold, Drangon Isles, Gilneas and land east of Loch Modan. I sooooooo hyped! Already 4x 25, three chars near raid bis.
Season of Discovery phase 1 was fun. Phase 2, so far, not so much. The overcrowding is just too much to deal with right now. Trying to quest is an absolute nightmare. I have played since the second or third week of WoW's release and have never seen it this bad. This is the first time in WoW's history that I have went to quest and seen ZERO mobs to kill, I literally mean ZERO mobs. So many people everywhere that you go, it's out of hand. You simply cannot quest. Sure, if you want to dungeon grind to level, but even that get's old real fast as you do not get to experience the phase 2 world as intended. If they do not add new servers, or seriously crack down on, what I call, "super-farmers", then SoD will go the way of retail and just fall off the mmo map. I post this so that if folks are experiencing the same bad things that I am, maybe we can all start speaking out until they add more servers.

Those mana pots require 165 alch to make. So in order to get them right now you must loot them. Which explains why they're expensive

It's important to note it only shows characters that are logged. My experience is that alot of people don't log in SoD.

I came back and leveled a shammy to max right before Trial of the Crusade dropped, and found it an absolute nightmare to gear up without a guild. Practically no one was running normal heroics, and even though Heroic + was suppose to be a way to catch up to current raiding you would have people refuse to play with people who were not at least semi Nax geared because they didn't want to "waste there time." Got into 1 group in 3 hours, saw the sea of GDKPs and decided that it wasn't worth the headache.
sounds like you were just on the wrong server, not all servers are the same on wrath, windseeker for instance rarely ever has gdkp's advertised as well as room to progress w/o having to be in a guild mostly due to the new icc dungeons that get you quick gear which allows you to get into the harder dungeons and even some raids. I have multiple geared toons with majority of them doing it without a guild in the first place. I'd recommend giving windseeker a try if you are still interested in wrath, community is pretty solid there as well.
I played regularly so didn’t have this issue myself as I had a guild, but seeing all the gdkps made me depressed. Feel for you man, it’s a shame what the game became. What annoys me is people in sod trying to turn the game into that direction. I don’t get how people haven’t realized that gdkps were long run awful for the game when they became the norm rather than exception.
Unfortunately GDKPs were the only way to play Wotlk without finding a raiding guild which is harder than getting into a gdkp as a carry without connections
People tend to go on large mass servers with the streamers on it because they think more people = more fun and things to do. But those streamer servers usually attract all those min/max gimps who think this game is a job. That’s why I’ve always chosen medium pop servers since classic came out in 2019. The player base still is more than enough (Vanilla was created for 2-4k players and the “medium” populated classic or SOD servers have 10k). That is plenty and more than enough and while you still have min/max idiots it was in my experience never to the extent that people describe on streamer realms.
All of these comments spot on. Wrath Classic imo was ruined by sweatlords and GDKPs. I actually had to make my own guild and we killed Yogg 1light (which i am proud of) got full Ulduar Bis on my prot Warrior, and people started to sign off on the raids and join GDKPs as they are "easy loot" so the community who wants to progress seems to be very little now, its basically the same in Era but worse since the prices on AH are insane.... basically in order to keep up you need to do GDKPs or buy gold.... example 800g for a titans flask on my server Firemaw EU.
Still haven’t played SOD it’s just not my thing but seeing how many people are playing is always a good thing

Wrath was good fun, enjoyed the launch and tried the raids, but ngl the story and theme which are excellent overshadow the fact that its just raid logging and one raid at that there is no other content to do outside of logging on once a week to clear a raid
I mean... a TON of Wotlk Guilds died over night when Blizzard released the "road map" and you could see Cata coming out in the Summer. The xpac was already overstaying its welcome. And for the sake of milking out everything else, they have thrown Wotlk and the future Cata playerbase under a bus... I mean... 4+ more months of ICC ? What ? In what world will any server be left standing ?

SoD has started a fundamental change to the social aspect of gaming. More comradery, fun, and collaboration between factions. On my server every friday night my guild and an ally guild take ~20 people to Wetlands and try to take control of the docks for a few hours. Each side is streaming and having fun, saying how great it is we are out there doing world pvp. It all seems in good spirits too. Dancing, having fun, not taking it too seriously. Even the raid we 9man and dont really req anything beyond shadow protection potions.
I would love to see your perspective from Alliance and your guild. I find the social part to be incredibly interesting.
Didn't notice it on my main, leveling them up. Now I'm leveling alts, the hunter bots are everywhere, I particularly the southern barrens is crawling with these awful hunter bots who I see often meleeing with boars, they die alot so not very efficient.

Plus I’m 4th up for shadowmourne on my warrior and at that point I could give a fuck about it. So games dead to me. Also no one’s pvping finding a partner is near impossible especially after the fucked the LFG and you can’t que for PvP the same way anymore. At least that’s my experience.
i 200% agree with everything you said. my guild broke up at the start of togc so i took a raiding hiatus and just pvpd. TOGC is a joke of a raid tier, and you ar correct after blizz took away the pvp LFG posting, it's near impossible to find regular partners. after clearing ICC H pre nerf, there's literally nothing pulling me back to the game, and arena vs all the shadowmournes is honestly just cancer. The Ashenvale event meta specifically includes PVP to win the event now.. people are fighting back other faction raids during fights pretty much every time. I feel like the criticism about Ashenvale being pve only is like a month old.
Yeah exactly. It seems like it took a while but people realised that if you defend certain spots your chances of winning increase. Although I do sometimes get events where raid are just trying to run from A to B to C but it seems those are now failing more often than they win

the pre-event phase literally fosters world pvp, but people like to pretend the effort going in to actually get the event itself to trigger is not part of the event.
one could argue that the event itself (kill 3 lieutenants + general) it lacking in design, there are definitely better ways to go about it, but to say it includes no pvp is downright false.
plenty a time people have gone out of their way to go defend a lieutenant to buy time in order to get a win, or defend the final general to clutch a win.
Sod is just peak win right now. I'm super pumped for 40 when hopefully they can do more class balancing and we have more tools to work with. I have 3 raiding characters now and it's not been that hard to keep up with them
Season of discovery was honestly a stroke of genius. It didn’t come easy, though. Gotta drag blizzard kicking and screaming, but once we get them to where they need to be, they absolutely knock it out of the park. Classic, hardcore, and now SOD. It’s been such a blast, and I feel like we’re far from the end of it.
Sadly history keeps repeating itself. The forums are already filled with posts about: Premade battlegrounds ruining it for casuals, flyhacking bots blasting inflation, worldbuff meta required or you're benched. 500g+ BiS items at 25.. Boosting.. GDKP.. Blizzard does nothing but farm money from these things, which is sad. I wish they cared to make a good game without creating toxic metas 24/7. Oh and yeah, you don't get banned for buying gold...
The more I play sod the more I want to play it. It's way better than I expected it to be, and I'm shocked by how much they got right. Capping the levels at certain breakpoints and creating entire new endgames was genius. It's not perfect, mostly from a pvp perspective, but I love it.
Tbh SoD is really fun and having a chill guild has made my time more enjoyable
7:26 you say that the total cap for a server in 2004 was 4,000. this is vastly wrong and its a number you see people throw out a LOT there was less than 250 servers in 2006 when TBC was launched and the total number of players subscribed to WoW was 10,000,000. if the servers were all capped at 4,000 then you would have needed 2,500 servers instead of the 250 we had. the truth is the concurrent number of players on a server at the same time was likely 4,000 but the total number of active players with characters on each server was likely closer to 40,000.
Having played my fair share in classic, it barely felt like a reason to return. Went for a nostalgic tour on a NE and human to 15 before realizing I had way too many other games to play than rehashing old content spiced with runes and remade dungeons/pvp.
As an era player, I've actually seen a lot of retail players come into era after trying seasonal.

That’s the way it is when new Xpac come out. We wear the gear from our nice raids until we hit a new level cap, exchanging maybe a slot or 3 and then that’s it.

SoD is so weird. My classic guild split right down the middle, half of us staying behind to farm ICC content level up alts and do ruby sanctum, the rest left for SoD day and didn't come back. I levelled to 25 in SoD, did BFD and some ashenvale in the first two weeks never looked back... felt like a half baked vanilla to me, but people love it. Clearly its a big win for blizzard though, nominal dev team supporting hundreds of thousands of sustained subscriptions on 20 year old content.
Raiding isnt sweaty, PvP is quick and bursty, a lot of new ways to play for most classes..yeah, I wonder why SoD is a hit.

SOD was a blast. Quit end of last year since I was travelling for a full month but dam it was fun. Would love to get back into it next phase but I'm afraid it will suck up too much of my time with a dog and a lady at home.
The issue with the numbers is whether it accounts for alts. lvl 25 raid makes it so easy to raid on alts as well as a main. I for instance, have 3-4 chars i raid multiple times a week so the numbers may be higher than the actual number of players

@@adamnagel7436 no it doesn't. that's your subjective opinion. people have never had trouble filling raids even with 40 people. the only problem with 40 man raids is player attendance consistency and even that is only a small bump on the road.
WotLK had run its course with me, personally, within the first week when I tried getting into a dungeon group. Too many elitists demanding ridiculous gs for such an easy dungeon really put a sour taste in my mouth, that I couldnt get out. I know that there are plenty of them in SoD too but I haven't had enough of a problem getting into BFD for it to ruin anything for me yet.
lfd i didn't have that issue, if i get kicked oh well, you can run normal, gear up the ICC dungeons on normal aren't hard drop nice stuff, most heroics are very easy except ICC ones have gear check. To bad you had that experience, it happens do hope you come back and try again, maybe find nice guild to help you gear.

I've been playing WoW for about 16/17 years or so, and this genuinely has felt the best it's been for a long time - mostly due to the amount of options we have to play like mentioned (Retail/SoD/Vanilla/Wrath) & now Retail is back to a decent enough state I'm loving how things are in both Classic and Retail.
I've usually* been a Retail player who just plays Classic in the downtime, and SoD seems like it's gonna cater to that more than ever. Very excited for the rest of the phases, and I've not stopped raiding yet.
*I skipped a bunch of SL patches to just play TBC instead.

I've been a filthy casual with SoD but my buddies are running 3-4 toons each raid lockout. They also need to enforce faction balance on PvE realms, Wild Growth(US) seems to be getting worse.
Hi Willie, thanks for the great content. I think you are MASSIVELY underestimating the player population in SOD though. As BFD is 10 man there is a huge number of pugs taking place - pugs usually mean no logs. I believe the numbers you've stated would be close to double.

Once my old guild got HLK they hung it up. Probably similar to many people. It's either off season or not going into Cata. Not many value Ruby Sanctum as content.
Honestly, besides Ashenvale being so buggy it has been a good event on my server. Yah first couple weeks it was a race and over instantly, but after that we started to see people playing D and not just rushing it. It brings a bunch of people to the zone and makes for a good time. Nothing like wiping the other faction and going on to the win. A lot of coordination getting balanced groups at each spawn / to play D.
I think that poll favors retail players. Id bet lots of classic players don’t follow the World of Warcraft channel because they identify it as retail, which is fair. That makes it even crazier that classic still got more votes overall

SoD at the current cap doesn't require all the pre-raid BiS gear collecting, dungeons, keys, etc. like normal level cap raiding. But is SoD bringing in "new" players or did it just steal players from the other Classic realms?
Loving sod, firat time in ages i ha e multiple alts, playing with a proper guild that is actually social rather than just raid logging. Always people for groups, instances and raids as well as just open world nonsense. Great times.

really sucks for anyone looking for a challenge though... sure its nice for you boomers with 8 wives, 19 children, 4 jobs and a mortgage to worry about, but those of us who enjoy spending perhaps a whole night in a raid playing with our mates, it really sucks that the raid is done in sub 30 minutes.
when someone says "raid night" usually what most people picture in their head is 40 people standing around in MC waiting for Dave to come back from the toilet so we can do our 4th attempt on Executus after slogging through the other bosses for 1-2 hours.

I stopped playing in the middle of TBC, did the first phase of Wrath, and starting playing SoD when I came out. I can tell a lot of Wrath people came to SoD because so many people are asking me for my Gear Score! 😂
I think wotlk has sort of been taken over by the sweaty players as well, who force most casuals not to take part in things. Tanks that run through dungeons as fast as possible, heavy critics in random DF PUGs looking through logs to confirm the amount of interrupts everyone is doing, demanding crazy GS's to take part in litetally anything...whilst SOD has been a lot more casual friendly and generally just a little less toxic. Still happens (saw someone demanding a GS for DM the other day) but its just less so. No-one wants to come home from work, log on to play a game and chill only to get yelled at by some random a**hole that takes this way to seriously and has been logged on for the last 14 hours. If there is another, less toxic and less hostile option, people will just naturally float towards that one. I know I did.
LFM BFD GDKP HAVE 7/7 EXP, WB, CONSUMES, GS UNDER 400 = BLACKLIST, NEED WARR WITH EPIC SWORD, HUNTER WITH EPIC CROSSBOW, PRIEST WITH EPIC STAFF, SUB 15 MINUTES RUN. CHECKING LOGS.

As soon as cata classic was announced I quit Wrath. It just felt like their was no point without a permanent wrath server. There are so many quests in the early zones that did not get finished until Wrath or BC that will be no longer accessible again. Just as an example, OG Mudsprocket will just not exist in ANY version of wow anymore.
SOD took wrath out tbh my server is dead until like 5 ST nothing happening during the day anymore kinda sucks but i get it. hopefully server mergers for cata?

When I make new character I try to do quests that I've never done/ forgot about. It works for me

SOD really is incredibly well done. Of course there are some glitches in Ashenvale, but overall great gameplay.

I play both Retail and SOD. Both games feel completely different and i like that.
SoD has been 10/10 so far. Very impressed with the small amount of dedicated devs that is has. This should be a huge eye opener for Blizzard.
These population stats based on logs are not a great indicator for this version of the game. As an alt-oholic, SoD has been absolutely devouring my (free) time. With only lvl 25 cap, I did BFD with 5 characters so far. I imagine there are more people like me with multiple characters, so I'm guessing the average is at about 2 characters per account who raided, at least, which would skew the stats for how many people are actually playing. But it sure feels like a lot of people. The big servers are active 24/7.
I hope we will get a rerun of the original trilogy again, in the future. Could possibly be our SoD characters. But then we have the question of, how will the runes for abilities we naturally learn change? But thats quite far out in the future still :)

Warlock seems to be the least played on both my servers! Not sure if that is the case or if it's coz I'm always looking out for them since you hyped them up pre release! Lol, more fear breakers are coming next phase so I will once again not be starting one.... and enjoying my warrior. Really bummed about warrior popularity right now tho, and worry about the future. We will undutably be nerfed hard unless they do something about caster scaling in end game during phases.

thankfully none of my guilds in wrath died since we have icc hm on farm, we all leveled characters on SoD but we got bored of the content super quick (hopefully that changes next season), I guess competitive players will continue to raid log as always on both or just wrath until cata drops.
Phases take too long, I quit WotLK before phase 2 even began because it took so long. My Paladin tank was full BIS for both AoE gold farming and raiding, but there was nothing left to do between p1 and 2
That's good tho, you can play the game, get bis and play something else until new phase is released

Try out another character then, Warlocks are fun. You can level it up in 3-4 days. Are you exalted with Silverwind sentinels ? That takes a bit of time and WSG grind
45 min raid spoiled me over the holiday break. Got to 11/12hm ICC and I just cant care enough to go sit through a 4 hour ICC clear anymore just to kill H LK.
If Microsoft was smart, they would hire a massive team and go all in on Classic + while maintaining the principles Vanilla was built upon.
if SoD wasn't out , I might be playing wotlk still. but my main "finished the game". all my goals are met, no progress to be made unless playing a game mode I don't really enjoy / need to coordinate with 9-19 other players to even engage in. I'd argue I'd be playing at a maybe 33% chance. In vanilla classic, I made my own goals with crafting epic BS sword tied to reputation of dark iron + I could grind DM:E for the book, arcanite and gold. nothing like that exists in Wotlk, everything is tightly designed you can't really solo stuff AND get progress done on your character.
Now they just need to make it premades vs premades for battlegrounds
They should rename it to Season of Fun, because that's literally what it is. I haven't enjoyed WoW so much since actual Vanilla.
world pvp is really nice too this time around
I would like some minor reworks to loot, quest loot, professions, and of course talents.
Loot: The open world drop rates suck. What also sucks is that sometime the only you choice you have for MANY levels is main hand only. Take that away or add more one handed options.
Quest loot: Just more of it. Sometimes you can do 15-20 quests and not get a single reward. Boring.
Professions: More to mae would be nice at all phases. More greens and blues that would actually be useful. Make it fun and refreshed. Not just a few out of a raid. Perahsp I missed some?
Talents: So many bad talents. Sure, talents placement is bad, but what I am talking about for example is the balance druid tree, where you have Omen of Clarity. To get that talent one has to spend four talents in the ballance tree that only boosts physical damage. That should be tweaked to 1,2,3,4 or 2,4,6,8 % increased damage in all forms, for both casters and physical. Things like that.
I have not had this much fun in wow since classic release, Blizzard really over delivered on my expectations for SoD!
SOD is what classic should have been from the start, for me anyway.
Working specs, forced faction balance for pvp realms and new content! (well, sorta) - it is great!

Just about the WotLK players drop off - those 2 lowest resets were Christmas, so it visually looks worse than it is and the last slight bump up might be Ruby Sanctum release. Still I'm sure wotlk is now going to just drop players as the expansion is done.
a statistic only based on logs is naturaly very flawed. On my server (chaos bolt eu), 1 out of 12 BFD pug runs were logged. In retails this is even more often the case, nobody cares about normal/heroic logs at this point and only a very smalll part of the playerbase is running mythic or raiding at all.

Lock balance functions was one of the best decisions I said so many times.
At least 30% of SoD is bots. It's astronomical because blizzard has never given less of a fuck about moderating.
I just don't get why they're making the 1-60 part so long in SoD. 7-8 months between the release of the server and end game is just crazy.
Feel like these low level caps should just be a short temporary thing, but at the moment i feel as if it's atleast twice as long as it ought to be. As for the low-level raids i don't quite care too much about it, would rather they left em as end game content.
I think cata suffers from the fact that WoW had been out for over 5 years (both OG and Classic), and that a lot of people’s lives change over 5 years. For me, i quit in cata because i started grad school. WoW was managable fun in undergrad but now it was time to focus. WC3 fans defeated Arthas, and felt like a good point to move on. Same thing is happening now, although SoD being amazing is probably making the problem look worse then it is 😂

Plenty of players like me will have ditched wrath/cata classic in favour of SOD. Cata classic will just be retail lite. Which is fine if you want that, but I don't.
Blizzard has done an amazing job with SoD. Great design choices made all around, they have a long road to redemption but this is a fantastic start.
I dont think people want "Easy fast" raids this is a Raid for level 25 as the game progresses the Raids will develop more mechanics what did you expect from a level 25 raid 10 mechanics on each boss with our 17 talents? You have to not look at this in a vacuum
the biggest let down for wotlk classic players is not wotlk era so no really a point to continue playing it . I was hoping for it despite the low chance it exists and when it was confirmed i just stoped playing it and waited for SoD now if i wanna do wotlk content i gotta resort to the private servers wich allways have a decent population

All Wrath characters are moving on to Cataclysm this year, unless enough people let Blizzard know that they want an era server. I was just in Wrath today and there are still a fair amount of people in it, but definitely Season of Discovery is hotter right now. Excellent videos, thumbs up!
Yeah, some servers have started to die but others are still highly populated luckily in wotlk so i'm still mainly playing wrath. Got a level 25 char in SoD but then stopped playing after that as I was getting bored compared to wrath raiding/arena content. How about you? :)

@@OrionStarzz My guild did ICC 25m HC and Ruby Sanctum 25m HC (first kill) in less than four hours. WoTLK is dead and on farm. Half a year of this is not worthy of a subscription. They need to do something better with SoD or I'll play something else. No one likes doing dead content forever.

As a 32 years old daddy I resubbed after 5 years just to play SoD! I hope they will go this way. I really would like to see Hearthglen as useful zone/raid, tunnel betwen Searing Gorge and Blasted Lands, Timbermaw Hold, Drangon Isles, Gilneas and land east of Loch Modan. I sooooooo hyped! Already 4x 25, three chars near raid bis.
Season of Discovery phase 1 was fun. Phase 2, so far, not so much. The overcrowding is just too much to deal with right now. Trying to quest is an absolute nightmare. I have played since the second or third week of WoW's release and have never seen it this bad. This is the first time in WoW's history that I have went to quest and seen ZERO mobs to kill, I literally mean ZERO mobs. So many people everywhere that you go, it's out of hand. You simply cannot quest. Sure, if you want to dungeon grind to level, but even that get's old real fast as you do not get to experience the phase 2 world as intended. If they do not add new servers, or seriously crack down on, what I call, "super-farmers", then SoD will go the way of retail and just fall off the mmo map. I post this so that if folks are experiencing the same bad things that I am, maybe we can all start speaking out until they add more servers.
Playing on ChaosBolt EU and i am hoping that the server wont die, like some SoM Servers did :/
