Everybody turns their noses up at the 396/402. I’ve always liked them. People should go look at pure stock drag races. The L78 ran just as good as the LS6. Hell, an L78 Nova was hard to beat. One of These days I’ll build the 70 L78 I have in my shop. Really like your channel.
That means a lot to me!! I'm not that great at translating the information, I'm not going to be a news anchor anytime soon. I really appreciate you guys putting up with my stuttering and stammering!!
Great job, I didn't know that it was that easy as far crank/ rod clearance! I looked at my 396 for years trying to figure out what to do with it. I'll be keeping that in mind for the future, great combo!
I have one of these in my 1970 Chevelle SS. Used AFR265s and a mild isky 275/284 and made 580hp. Awesome little big block! I want to get 600+ out of it. I can’t let my Mom’s 3 row SUV have more power than my Chevelle!
I love all the different big block combos you come up with also love your 55 in the back ground nice looking car I would love to see a video in itone day.
Nice combo and great results, just goes to show you that there's more than one way to skin a cat, how much more could you have gotten out of the 408 with cam and alluminum heads with a little more compression and flow, and how would that stack up parts and labor wise to the stroker build, including machine shop. I still think that dollar for dollar, nitrous oxide is the easiest way to add power without losing drivability, and when setup properly it will blow your mind more than your motor lol. Keep rolling......
Hey nick I'm a huge fan of big block chevys I have a 0.60 over 427 so a 439 it's a simple build it's around 10.5 to1 compression afr 265 roval port heads victor jr. Intake atm 950 carb and a howards 235x241 @50 618 lift on a 108 lsa the motor made really good hp best pull was 661 hp 605 torque @6400 rpm I think with a lil more camshaft it would do better I'd like more duration a few people told me the cam I picked was perfect for my combo what's your thoughts on this I do have a comp xr 292 solid roller I think it's 254x260@50 and 650x666 lift on a 110 lsa I'm thinking it would pick up 20 to 30 hp with the cam swap if not I'll hold on to it for my 496 build. That is a good looking 55 in the background let me know what you think on my combo any advice would be appreciated thanks your friend from Louisiana Rick 427
Early blocks only. Remove soft plugs and if a pencil will fit between cylinders, It’s late, thin block, If pencil won’t fit, it can be done. Good luck finding an early block.
Is there a reason you used closed chamber heads for this build? I have the parts around to build this combo, but the heads i have are open chamber heads casting #820
The domes on the Pistons are made for closed chamber or open chamber but they're only 17 CC's so you will only have a compression ratio of low 9s approximately 9.3 to 1 with open chamber heads. Most closed chamber heads will get you approximately 10.7 to 1
Just curious, wouldn't a 408 CID be a .060" overbore 396? Since .030" over is 402 CID. My pump gas +.030" 402 made 441 HP. Small dome Speed Pro pistons, stock 049 heads, 9.6:1 compression. Flat tappet .553"/.578" lift, 234*/244* @ .050, RPM intake, 850 Holley. Sounds mean, but with good street manners with a 3,000 stall converter, fun to drive. Thanks for this video, engine is 25 years old and still strong, but will look at stroking it thanks to your excellent sharing of this combo.
I stand corrected on the cubic inches,, The first combination was a 408, When I moved up to the stroker package. I had the block honed an additional.010
Whats a good set up for 396 .030 street strip use looking for power package already looked into Eldelbrock Performer RPM! Its a 66' Chevelle SS period correct car
There's a video my most popular video has a 396 running with a extreme energy 236/ 242 hydraulic roller that makes 447hp if you're just looking for a tame Street combination. That kind of power could push any old Chevelle into the low 12s be a fun street car
Nick I recently acquired a 71 396 in a deal that’s been bored to 408. I have a good 454 crank/balancer sitting around that I could use. The 408 has a hydraulic roller cam in it, comp springs, Harland sharp roller rockers, etc. So I would only need to buy the pistons so it’s very appealing to me. When I researched putting the 454 crank in a 396 block everyone keeps talking about clearancing the block for rod clearance. Have you had any issues with this? I’m not a mechanic by any means, so it makes me a little nervous doing block clearancing if I have to.
Yes I've been told stories about people that has had clearance issues I've only Built these motors twice and had no clearance issues but, I have put all kinds of stroker cranks in small block and big block Chevys I wouldn't be nervous about getting a grinder and taking out a little Notch in the block to make things clear,, you can do it!! thanks for watching
All you got to do is use a feeler gauge make sure you got at least .030 clearance everywhere for all the parts stretching it'll be great. You can do it
Hey Nick do you have any experience with the gen 6 vortec 7.4 heads? I have a set and i have a 396 block but not sure if they will interchange?they have a big swirl ramp in the intake port and they have a very tight chamber.
Some people have successfully put gen vi heads on a mk iv block. You will want a mk iv head gasket and check the cylinder head water jackets carefully near the lifter Valley. depending on core shift they could dump water into the lifter Valley, but most likely you'll be fine.
It would be fun,, it would definitely pick up the horsepower and probably lose a little bit of torque but if you're putting it in a car with low gears and fairly lightweight it would be a blast
Sometimes you nail a combination and you should just leave it alone,, I never do, I keep messing with it but I would think twice before I changed that 427. Those are killer killer numbers. And I understand you got some good pieces in it. But that's still. Bad a**
Flat top pistons and.#781 head will usually get you 8.5 to1 cr.. I did a motor like that a couple years ago with a thumper 227/241 @.050, it Made 516hp 565tq , all under 5400 rpms! That's what I do,
The cylinder heads had almost no porting but the compression was About 9.3 to 1,, your compression will let you run on 87 octane. And you'll probably only lose 5 to 7 horses.
Yeah i've put together a lot of nineteen seventys 402's,,, And yes people will almost give those motors away,, You can find nice cast 454 cranks for around a $100. And then you've got something real you can work with,,
Awesome info Nick, appreciate you sharing that with us! I expect to be in the high 10's with 500-530 HP @ 3400 lbs. If I'm not, I've got a chassis issue somewhere. Are these 781's/049's? You say they have the large valves, did you do any port work on them? Thanks.
The heads are 1968 cast# 290, As far as porting work, I did not port them myself. But somebody had done a very nice job of gasket match and bowl blend porting,, It didn't look professional grade, but the guy that did. It had obviously ground on heads before,,
I did a 1970 402 .40 over 2 bolt main, 10.00:1 with and eagle 4.00" crank for internally balanced big blocks, stock oval port 3964290 head castings with 2.06/1.72 valves, no porting, hydraulic roller camshaft .566 lift with 230/230 @ .50 112 LSA Edelbrock Performer RPM AirGap. 421HP/510TQ. It's the original engine, trans, axle in a real SS. It came out to be 436 ci. I don't want to break it. That's impressive what you've done. What head casting are you using?
People make such a big deal about compression techy... bla bla bla bla bla. Look at 454 motor home build with trick Flo top end kit. 8.2 compression and almost 570HP! Can run 87 pump gas all day!
I'm with you,, it cracks me up the people that will spend an absolute fortune on a 383 sdc and a cheap .060 bored 396 or 402 will kick the crap out of it

I had a 396/402 big block. It was good little rat on the street.
Appreciate the compliment

Can you send me your email address? I have a few questions on big block Chevy cylinder heads. Or I can send mine, doesn't matter to me
Just text me. I don't check my email and Miss A lot of stuff sent. to me, 816 213 7204 Nick

I've had my 68 Camaro for 30 years the 396 still puts a smile on my face when I put the pedal to the metal, great video keep them coming
I plan on putting a good set of oval port heads and airgap intake for street use. It should make 500 hp+...
Great information I have a 396 runs great now I can build a motor for my 1967 camaro thanks
Right on!
dang dude, shhhh. don't tell be telling everyone about getting these 396's.

I'd like to see a side-by-side comparison of a standard bore/stroke bbc 454 and a bbc 402 with a 4.25 stroker crank. Both combos make 454 cubes.
You need to borrow the 402 about another 1/8 inch. Need 4.25 bore
That'd be cool ,,but the custom pistons to build the long stroke 454 would be about $1700. I'm probably out on that one.
I love all the different big block combos you come up with also love your 55 in the back ground nice looking car I would love to see a video in itone day.
Had to clearance for rods on one side of block, probably core shift. Block was a 4 bolt mains 66 block...
Thanks Nick for sharing 😀
YOU STILL THE MAN!! thanks for watching!
Very interesting, Nick. Awesome power!
Great info as always thanks for sharing…
Thanks for watching!
I took a 396 and put a 454 crank in it and made a 440 cu.in. .070" bored over, 10.5 comp. It was a 408" .060" 396"...
Very cool info 👍 I have a pair of fresh 396's for a twin charged project I have
Nice results for something so simple.
Great job.

My answer was too long and complicated. My opinion is don't mess with the 427. Put it in a musclecar use it and brag to your friends about it.
in the 70's car magazines were claiming that a 1966 396 block could be punched out to 4.25" bore. How true was that?
I didn't know that,, I've never had one sonic check to see how thick they are.!!??
It's true, the early blocks could be bored that much.
Early blocks only. Remove soft plugs and if a pencil will fit between cylinders, It’s late, thin block, If pencil won’t fit, it can be done.
Good luck finding an early block.
I'd like to know what the 436 would do if it was set up just like the 408.
, what would the 436 do if built with the lower compression and smaller cam,, In my opinion, it would lose 30 to 40 horsepower
Most of the old hi perf blocks will also bore to 4.25. I like bootleggers cams. Nice recipe on motor.
I've never heard this before, but I see there are. Several people commenting that it could be done I had no clue,
My 66 Chevelle ran 10.67 et. at 125 mph with the 408"... 850 cfm holley carb, 8162...
With 4.10 gears?
Sounds like a wicked 408
I had a 5.13 gear
It was ok back then, 30 yrs. ago...

This project's all about economical parts. I don't know of any Off the shelf pistons that will work with that rod length,
