If y’all really want to know, the 396 is no good, don’t waste your time with them. If you need to get rid of yours I know a guy 😂
I'm with you,, it cracks me up the people that will spend an absolute fortune on a 383 sdc and a cheap .060 bored 396 or 402 will kick the crap out of it
Hi nick i have some questions, sorry for being a novice to big blocks but when you say you put those 911-16 springs in, that's all you did? no replacement retainers or locks?, i know little big about small blocks but i've just got a Mark IV 454 that was running out a RV, some good 781 heads and planning to get some retrofit lifters and that cam/a very close copy by mellings (MEL-22236) and find out what push rods or just ask you cause what length since it seems i'm making a clone of this. Cam and head swap and intake and stuffing it in a 79 z28 Thanks for your time and reading.
I changed cap and locks to 748 - 16 caps 612 - 16 locks (cap and locks on the older 60s heads will work) ( keep in mind the factory locks are 7° the ones that I used are 10° they do not interchange with the same caps) it dangerous using 50 year old locks you can drop a valve. I don't recommend using old locks. 90% of 454 is are tapped for a retainer plate on the front and you can use a step nose cam if you didn't want to mess with the cam button push rods you're just going to have to measure them and have custom length of my it seems like everyone slightly different
@@dzperformance7360 Thank you so much for replying, good information!
What cam? Sounds good
Xtreme Energy hydraulic flat tappet 224/230@ 477/480 lift . I assembled this motor in the year 2001 before the epidemic of camshafts going flat
Its not a fair comparison... square port against oval port ! It should be square port against square port . But after seeing the result i would go with the 781 without all the sign writing
You're correct it's not a fair comparison ,,I'm just pulling stuff off the shelf doing all kinds of crazy testing. thanks for watching
Good effort tho ! Id like to see what you could get out of a 396 oval port with a cast crank, l feel that these engines are overlooked and underrated @dzperformance7360
Is there a reason you used closed chamber heads for this build? I have the parts around to build this combo, but the heads i have are open chamber heads casting #820
The domes on the Pistons are made for closed chamber or open chamber but they're only 17 CC's so you will only have a compression ratio of low 9s approximately 9.3 to 1 with open chamber heads. Most closed chamber heads will get you approximately 10.7 to 1
Happy New Year!! Great new things for you and your family, Great content !! Thanks
That's incredible of you to say that thank you so much
@@dzperformance7360 I have a 396 if you ever come down to south Florida, more than Happy to Donate it.
Are you in the Dallas area?
No southeast of Kansas City Missouri
❤
Nice throttle response .
Man that wot sounds awesome!
Nick I recently acquired a 71 396 in a deal that’s been bored to 408. I have a good 454 crank/balancer sitting around that I could use. The 408 has a hydraulic roller cam in it, comp springs, Harland sharp roller rockers, etc. So I would only need to buy the pistons so it’s very appealing to me. When I researched putting the 454 crank in a 396 block everyone keeps talking about clearancing the block for rod clearance. Have you had any issues with this? I’m not a mechanic by any means, so it makes me a little nervous doing block clearancing if I have to.
Yes I've been told stories about people that has had clearance issues I've only Built these motors twice and had no clearance issues but, I have put all kinds of stroker cranks in small block and big block Chevys I wouldn't be nervous about getting a grinder and taking out a little Notch in the block to make things clear,, you can do it!! thanks for watching
All you got to do is use a feeler gauge make sure you got at least .030 clearance everywhere for all the parts stretching it'll be great. You can do it
Hello, Nick. What harmonic balancer are you using on this build? Thanks, Steve.
It's an externally balanced 454, I bought this performance parts 454 HO. used but it is the harmonic balancer that came with the crate motor originally
Awesome truck!!
Thats really sweet. I have a 72 longbox with a 350 and 4 speed. But man that baby pulls hard! And crisp! Very nice truck. GOD BLESS
I can't believe more people haven't realized just how great the Vortec 5.7 (350) actually is. The heads are well known but, the 4 bolt versions are still out there for cheap. I have one on a stand in my garage that is complete, 4 bolt, best heads, accessory drive brackets, etc. I got it for $400. You can find them cheaper than that! They can easily be stroked or hopped up as a 355 and they make great HP/tq. I'm guessing the crazy LS fad has caused them to be overlooked?
I wonder if it pulls enough vacuum for brakes. I'm building the same combo with 200 cc iorn eagles. The cam is close to what I'm considering. Great power.
Once again I failed you guys I didn't put a vacuum gauge on it but it's got a pretty rough idle I doubt if it's got much vacuum at idle
No failure! Nice combo. I just want to get my 383 right the first time.
Sounds pretty healthy to me. Enough to get into trouble in that S10 for sure.
It raining High 12 in that S10 we're upgrading to a 500 horsepower 383
Battery almost dead on Startup stand,,, first time the 350s ran in 12 years but I thought it sounded pretty good
Definitely gonna have to put some good shoes on her to get any kind of traction. Very snappy. I have a question on your big block stuff...... what length rocker stud do you run on iron heads with roller rockers?
Factory most the time I run factory studs if it's a roller cam that gets up over 6500 I'll use Factory length ARP studs,, over 7,000rpms I go to some kind of jessle or T&D shaft rockers
Nice!
Very Nice C10,I have a 67 I’m working on lots of fun ..!
Post some pictures on your channel I'd like to see that
Wow wicked response
Sounds great!
Nice Nick!!!! Sounds great! Those 383 make some beans..lol
Beautiful truck, but be careful! There a loose nut behind the steering wheel! 😂
has it been down the track yet ?
I hope first thing this spring when the weather breaks
Man this truck is great Nick. Have a Happy New Year. - Jeff
Thanks for the compliment I've been meaning on calling you Mark has been using some of those heads that I bought from you he ended up with about half of them
Love that truck. My uncle is working on a 65 C10 long bed. It is getting a 406 with sportsman heads and a mild hyd roller. I hope it sounds like that.
Torque 💪
Before anyone has to ask the loud ticking sound is ceramic coated headers cooling off
That’s crazy!
No, it isn't, they don't do that like that
Lollipop Isn't there a cat in a tree or something that you can go save. Instead of putting negative comments on my channel go do something constructive
I know this video is a year old but what studs do you run with the scorpions and iron heads? The studs for the stamped rockers currently on the motor are too short and put the set screw way down in the poly lock.
Sounds nice and healthy!
Killer looking 55. Sounds great too.
Thanks for watching
Whats a good set up for 396 .030 street strip use looking for power package already looked into Eldelbrock Performer RPM! Its a 66' Chevelle SS period correct car
There's a video my most popular video has a 396 running with a extreme energy 236/ 242 hydraulic roller that makes 447hp if you're just looking for a tame Street combination. That kind of power could push any old Chevelle into the low 12s be a fun street car
Sorry but i have a question. shouldn't you be weighing them kind of like un sprung weight. the trunnions shouldn't be weighed, unless you know that all the trunnions and trunnion bearings weigh the same. l Like all your videos. keep it up. Merry Christmas
You are correct
What would probably be the most accurate is how much weight is directly over the valve. But an overall weight is just kind of a General indication of how many RPMs they run ,,kind of funny how it just works that way . but yes you're correct
Nice 👍 I'm possibly doing a test soon. 781 fully ported By FORCFED me . Bigger valves . My question to you is " you think a 548 BBC with Diamond 33 cc dome pistons and.780 lift solid roller cam will clear the chamber and take lift ? I'm trying to see what I'll run in my StreetMod 28 Small Tire radials weight 2280 Chevy II SS Nova. Ran 5.5 in the 1/8 mile with 990 heads fully ported. Tiny smaller cam and around same dome .might try to get a tunnel ram for 781s with single Dominator ultra XP Carb.... Thank you sir Merry Christmas
Never did one quite like that so I don't know?? But thanks for watching
Sounds good !
I liked how you ignored the boat car and kept the camera on some classics!
Yeah that thing was badass
We just threw away the factory cross ram and those junk Holley carbs on our numbers matching '69 DZ 302. We also got rid of that junk Delco-Remy dual point distributer along with those horrible double hump heads. We replaced it all with a set of Ching-Zao triple hump heads and matching manifold. I think there's a WCFB around here we can use. Might need an adapter plate. I've got a used '76 454 GMC electronic distributer to use.
I'll buy it all.
Nice Truck, engine sounds awesome. Happy Holiday!!
Just found you're channel, very cool. Love all the technical/spec information rundown. Funny, I ran that same cam in a '93 Lt1 with GM casting aluminum heads worked over by Chad Golen, along with some others bolt-ons. Pulled 400hp with an untouched bottom end and a m6. Build was a tad much for 350ci. However, a advertised hp rating of 275hp bumped up to 400 at the wheels was a hell of a pickup. Car was a ton of fun!
Yep. That sounds proper and a mic drop.
Awesome. Started like it should. I'm guessing a well set up distributor with no lock out. Sounds good.
👍
Awesome! Really enjoy your content
Nice truck
