    Let's address some comments:
    Some comments about the phone synchronizing with other devices when you swipe away the notification - that may be but it doesn't explain why when you go into settings, or when you enable/ disable something, there are DNS lookups. Why should any data leave your phone?
    Some comments about the fact that Apple is understanding how you use your phone....eh...why? Excuse me, but this is my device. I paid for it. I disabled any telemetry and diagnostics. So what you are saying is that its ok for them to spy on how you use your device "in order to make it a better experience"
    Hell no!
    Why should I be their testing subject to collect data? They have UX (user experience) teams that get paid for this. I don't know about you, but I never received a check.
    Some comments about the fact that who cares if they get your phone usage - how about no?!
    What happens if you get into a car accident and the insurance company refuses to pay because they got data from your phone showing you were driving 20MPH over the speed limit? Do you care now?
    The bottom line is simple (and for those who missed the entire point because you were furious that your dear iPhone isn't perfect): You have a device that you use every day and everywhere and you have ZERO idea what goes on without your knowledge behind the scene as your phone constantly communicates with servers. Yes, some of the communication is to keep the phone working and some of the data is known data like downloading emails. But what about all the other connections that are being made? AND these are ONLY DNS.
    And when you install apps, this becomes exponentially worse as let's be honest, most people don't use just the standard apps that come with the phone.
    So stop trying to justify how this is fine. It is not. Its your private data that you are giving over on a device that you paid for to use a service you pay for.
    How is this right?

      yep, it goes through icloud/apple servers to dismiss the notifications across all your other devices as well. I really don't have an issue with apple's tracking compared to google's. Google tracks your entire device AND every website you visit, on AND off your device if you choose to use chrome as your browser of choice. Apple doesn't have that level of omniprescence across the internet and devices like google has.

    apple tracks notification information because they eventually make suggestions to their users whether they should move the notification to ‘scheduled notification’ to avoid distractions if an app is sending a lot of notifications and the user is simply dismissing them all the time … I have ADHD and personally find this suggestion really helpful because notifications overwhelm me sometimes and I forget that I can set them to be shown to me only at a time on my choosing. So, I actually really appreciate this feature from Apple. And it’s the little quality of life things like these that keep me with Apple.
    it’s kind of similar to gmail suggesting you to unsubscribe from an email newsletter if you tend to never open and read them.

    The bottom line is that as long as you use a phone that requires a login account that identifies you to work you will have no privacy on your phone. This applies to both Android and Apple. It doesn't matter what 'privacy' stuff that Android or Apple say they have on their phones, your identity and usage is NOT PRIVATE FROM THEM. They'll hide your activities from third parties, but not from themselves. The only way out of this is to use a phone that works without a personally identified account - which has your real name, address, date of birth. This is impossible to do on an Apple phone - Apple phones can't work without an account. Privacy can be done on some Android phones if you get one that has an OS that is based on the Android Open Source Project, which has no personal account and no Google tracking software and no Google aps, so you can preserve your privacy from being personally identified. There are some OS that are based on ASOP, such as Lineage OS and Graphene OS.

      This video was OUTSTANDING and SPECIFIC as to what apps are watching us!
      You know...I never thought about my tablets (which is what I use far more than my mobile phones) benefiting from my PiHole! My system is better than I thought.
      From THIS video...I'm relieved that I stopped even using Facebook apps, and I never used any Amazon apps.
      I'm glad I'm NOT fun or interesting, so I have no difficulty leaving my mobile phones at home. That probably helps me, too.
      However...
      One thing I've always wanted someone to test was this: when a person turns off "Find My iPhone" or "Find My Device" or that kind of thing...does the phone/tablet/whatever ACTUALLY STOP pinging the Apple or Android "Find MY..." BLE mesh networks?
      We all know that these networks receive pings via BLE without even needing wi-fi or a cell connection. It sounds like "they" always "know" where are devices are and what they're doing.
      Is there a way for anyone to hear and identify one's OWN BLE signal from one's OWN device to find out whether it's on or not?
      This, as you know better than I, sounds like a very difficult thing to actually do. I have no idea how to do it. So...this is a BIG "ask." Perhaps you know resources and whom to ask about this.
      Meanwhile...you, your audience and I continue to stuff devices we aren't actively using into Faraday bags for our peace of mind.
      Mahalo for a really thought-provoking video! Much aloha to you.

    A really good thing to do, is to setup Pi-Hole on a Raspberry Pi (any RP works) and connect it via an Ethernet cable to your home router.
    Then setup PiVPN on that very RP and connect your devices to that PiVPN via WireGuard.
    Now you have just built your own ad blocker and self-hosted VPN. If you go outside, even on a different country, your device's IP will always show as if you are still at home, thus taking advantage of the Pi-Hole's ad blocking capabilities even outside your home network.

      no panic - most of Apple‘s (Finder, etc) and third-party app‘s connections to Apple Inc.‘s servers are icloud-related app sync or e.g. location-based services or messaging (e.g. web api updates by phone sensors and/or internet servers, for instance, a mail server update announcing new incoming mail…) We live in modern times, and though the sheer volume of connections via dns only might be shocking for end-users, it definitely isn‘t for developers. Social media and e-commerce apps are also very telemetry-heavy, to which you gave legal consent when accepting their respective usage terms… let alone those from Apple various device OS‘s. It‘s ‚conditio sine qua non‘ - means mobile sevices are simply not happening without its precondition.

    • @LironSegev

      these are only DNS queries - why would Apple need to know when you swipe away notification? What would they need to know when you go into a setting? I have an solar inverter (Growatt) and the Shinelink still uses its own hardcoded DNS server even though you could set a DNS server manually in the device. It still connects to an Chineese IP for some dns translations. A lot of these connections are for caching information from the services (like itunes, music, news, stocks, findmy, icloud, appstore etc), to provide a ‘snappy’ user-experience.
    Others are to sync information from icloud like (your other devices(like your other iphones, watches, airpods, homepods, macs, macbooks, ipads that you’re logged in with your icloud) contacts, photos, calendar, reminders, notes, saved maps favorite locations, saved maps favorite routes, settings, files etc).
    Finally there is some telemetry data (splunk-nec) for apple to know how they’re doing with their sync and to detect service degradation issues on their end and to figure out if you’re a customer with slower internet connection or fast internet connection. This is tracked because Apple does a staggered auto-updates (if auto-updates are enabled) and this helps them determine what the best day and time would be to push an update to your phone.

      they are overreaching - why should they know that you go into the setting menu? Also remember these are only DNS, so other connections that are made (for analysis) that dont use DNS but direct IP connections are not shown. Also, should they be allowed deeply analyze how you operate your device? Yes, there is value for Apple, but what do they do with that data? For eg: how comfortable are you knowing that Apple knows you are driving at 50Mph and swiped away your notification? maybe you are fine with it, but what if they sell that to your insurance company and then you have an accident. Apple is selling data, Apple has never denied selling data.
      It just claims that it does not sell data related to your own personal name or device. That’s easy to bypass if any email (or volumes of other items) ever is linked back to you.

    If pi hole server meant to block ads is that why the why the iPhone is making query? Why is the iPhone making all those queries. Or this is just FUD to get hits.

    • @LironSegev
      @LironSegev  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Pi-hole has a list of known sites that it uses to check if they are ad servers. Pi-hole isn't making any queries, the phone is making the DNS queries. What see is that the known sites are blocked but pi-hole is and server so what it doesn't know it lets through. As I said, we have very little documentation on what those domains are let alone what they do so these are not on its list. You can manually add those sites to be blocked but then your apps won't work. So the entire point is that your phone talks to servers constantly sending data. Why? Besides making the app work, what else is it sending? What is the data used for? We have no idea.

    You'f love to know what your mobile carrier tracks about your usage patterns. I'd trust Apple with my data versus a lot of other companies out there. There is no escaping telemetry and tracking today unless you turn your devices off and leave them unplugged. Also get some tin-foil for a hat and find a big rock to live under. WHO CARES. And by the way you are using Google for your DNS on unencrypted port 53? Really? ... And you are concerned about Apple? Bahahahahaha ...

    • @LironSegev
      @LironSegev  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Where does one begin...
      Yes your carrier tracks a lot of telemetry at a transport level vs their main focus being at the app level m
      Not sure what DNS you are talking about since this literally is my own DNS being pi-hole. I removed the default one as you saw. So no idea WTF you are on about.
      And again, the question is why should Apple or any company get any data for something you do on the device?
      The usual response is tin foil hat and who cares. Ok l. But what if your device logs that you watched social media while the car was driving at 50mph and then had an accident. And what if that data was sold to the insurance company. And what if they used that to refuse to pay you?
      Oh that never happens right? Actually is did and does. Loads of cases where this data was used as supporting evidence.
      But please go on and tell me how this doesn't matter and privacy is dead and the usual blah blah.
      K bye

    • @LironSegev
      @LironSegev  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @CedroCron that is after it leaves pi-hole. The point of this video was just to show the DNS entries made by the phone. I don't care about the end destination which is why pi-hole isn't set up. This wasn't a video showing how to secure your DNS traffic

  • @TheTitaniumSkull

    And you skip the part about apple ecosystem, that is half of the apple queries. Are all queries legit?, No. But at the same time you are not researching all the queries and that is somewhat misleading on the numbers. I enjoyed some of your videos, But become disinterested when it is only a snippet of the whole picture.

    • @LironSegev
      @LironSegev  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It's simple; why should Apple get anything when you swipe away a notification on your phone just because you are part of their ecosystem? I don't care what ecosystem you are in, there is zero reason for anything you do on the device that doesn't impact anything on the Apple side and yet it still connects to it. You don't think that's a problem? You don't think that companies are overreaching by knowing what everything you do?
