- Smart ForTwo 451 Front End Removal & Motorhome Towing Braking System Removed
I bought ANOTHER Smart Car ... this time a 2011 Smart ForTwo Night Orange edition. One of only 235 ever made!
Why? Well because my Smart 450 is getting on in its life and the colour ... well I just fell in love with it.
In this video Dad and I remove the front of the car and check out an aftermarket braking system designed for use when towing behind a motorhome. Something i was never going to use!

As the car has been towed behind a camper it's probably been parked on a lot of wet grass. That probably hasn't helped the corrosion issue. Your Dad's got a lot of patience working on your cars.
That's a very good point! Didn't think of that! (PS - he certainly has)
It's all very interesting. im intrigued... and yep, it seems like they didn't want anyone but the main dealers to be working on it , folk need Smartcar specialists or your dad , who is fast becoming one 😄 great job guys 🙏
Cheers 😄
Interesting towing brake thingy, rather a weird setup 😮Hope you can sort out the brakes, my moneys on the funny blue pipes 🧐 Loved the oooo’s and ahhh’s coming from your dad 😂
Thanks for watching. Fingers crossed too 😂
In Finland we use a similar system for student drivers with an extra brake pedal on the passenger side.
Ah that's interesting!
The blue pipes are definitely not standard, there should be two continuous black plastic pipes all the way from the fluid reservoir to the master cylinder with no joins. Seems like a previous owner has cut and re-joined them using industrial pneumatic pipe and quick connect fittings. Coincidently I just changed the fluid reservoir on my 450 as many years of sunlight through the little grill under the windscreen had rotted the top of it and it crumbled when I tried to take the cap off. The 451 uses the exact same reservoir but the pipes are a slightly different shape.
Well done to your long suffering dad for getting stuck in, but I didn't see any cups of tea/coffee going in his direction ? Got to look after our dads 😁
Cups of tea are being consumed - just off camera :) - the braking system has had a repair in the past i agree
seen that brake dodge before;on a Cooper Monaco the handbrake worked by pulling the brake pedal. Same solution back in 1957 or so.
Ah brilliant! 😃
Thinking about the underside rust… Although it’s lived in Lincs all its life, you don’t know where it got dragged to on the back of a motorhome. Could have spent many summers by the sea around the country.
Also, being dragged in the wake (and spray) behind a motorhome probably bombarded it with all kinds.
That's a very very good point!
Pete sir I hope your head is okay! Love your updates Jon, cheers!
Thanks for another great video, i still find it quite a quirky car and under the skin looks a solidly built.
Glad you enjoyed it
Brilliant 👏 👏 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
The Tangerine Dream!
Fast becoming a nightmare for Dad 😂

no power steering fluid on this car John 😉 ..... Electric power steering was an option that it seems few cars actually have 👍
I'm going to have to check that ... As I'm pretty sure it has power steering
@@JonCoupland As previous reply stated, no power steering fluid system . Its an electric motor

@@BigPerformance ah brilliant! As you know ... I'm not an expert 😂
Ive got unexpected headache too Gearbox Bearings gone on my new Fiat 500 , the dealer to be fair has offered to cover half the cost of repairs but i need to find a trustworthy mechanic in my local area which is not easy , I will definitely get it repaired as i love the way the 500 drives and how comfy it is , Now regretting parting with the i10 but i lost faith in the car since the accident and wanted a slightly bigger car in case i ever have an accident again , touch wood not , anyway hopefully your dad will get the Smart car back to its old glory.
Oh no! sorry to hear that - fingers crossed you are up and running again soon!
@@JonCoupland Hope so 😞👍 I should've kept the i10 lol 🤣
nice one pete
☺️
Your dad needs some foam floor tiles to lay on 😊
We do have some 😂 they just get forgotten sometimes
You've got to get an electric screwdriver/impact gun for all them screws/torx fittings. Makes life easier as i have found out. Car is coming along nicely. Usually long brake travel is due to the handbrake adjustment being slack.... just my amateur opinion 🤐👍🇮🇪
Ah we do have one. Just these were to hand 😂 - thanks for the advice. We can check It out
@Jon Coupland , il even lend you a book , ( of matches ) be even faster
😂
The 451 doesn’t like non genuine rear brake cylinders, maybe the 🍊 has non OEM installed.
Ah that's interesting! They appear original
@@JonCoupland I priced up new 451 slave cylinders from MB for mine .... they were £silly money. Can't remember how much, but do remember the shoes were £150!
Its a thingimajig attached to a whachamacallit mk 4 😂😂
Ah that's the one?
Alot of these modernish cars seem to rust worse than 70s cars
Seems to have never been protected!
Im not sure about this car mate each to their own
Something for everyone 😂
