I want to say THANK YOU. This video saved me a $150 diagnosed plus the cost to repair doior from kia dealership. I have a 2020 kia telluride and I fixed my door in 60 seconds by simply tightening the screw.
This is good advice - a small matter that's often overlooked by people who think they have a bigger issue. My car door has been making this exact same noise. I just googled this video and then went out to my car door, and tightened up the screw. Instantly my car door is 99% quieter while opening/shutting it. Wasn't the check strap or anything else... just literally a loose screw/pin.
After door being harshly blown open experienced exactly the 3 cracks every time opened or closed driver door, tightening that bolt did the trick - all fixed up! Thankyou for posting - saves me a trip to dealership with potentially infecting waiting room!
My wife's car does this all the time, only when I started to question why I noticed when she opens the door (we live on a steep drive) she throws the door open putting massive strain on the check arm and fixing. £10 socket and a word in her ear and all fixed however I feel like this will only happen again as remember her having same issue on other cars and passenger side on mine. Usually this is because it has worked free but remember just sometimes it is down to driver error! :)
Cyclone Cyd - you done it again! My Aygo has just started doing this in the last 10 days on the driver's side. From your video I now know what to look at tomorrow and have a go at fixing it - many thanks 👍
Did you find the problem? Did the video help? The River Mersey runs through Stretford, not far from Davyhulme where I was born and Timperley where I grew up from 6.
Great video! Have Liked & Subscribed! Last week this cracking sound started on my Citroen Cactus and first thoughts were of faults inside the door and some internet searches said the same. Fortunately, I found your video on YT. My bolts to the A pillar were solid but the 2 nuts recessed in the door frame were over a turn loose. They are recessed and not easy to see but a 10 mm socket fed in easily. A 2 minute job - I am so pleased! Thank You.
DS4 owner here, same sound started coming from my door as well and WD-40 didn't help. My A pillar bolts are also not loose, so I was wondering what it might be. I guess I will check the others hidden in the door frame and hopefully they are not that big of a pain to reach.
Tried oiling the hinges but made no difference. Googled the problem and found this fix and sure enough the nut was loose. Quick fix, thanks for sharing
Hi Ray, yes indeed. I actually loosened the screws to engineer this problem, but you are quite correct, check all the doors while you're at it. It's a common problem on loads of cars and I have actually known people strip their doors down to change check arms when this was the problem.
In my mustang, it was the door hinge bushing, a cylindrical part that's around the pivot on the bottom hinge that kept making a loud creak. From what I understand, it's supposed to rotate freely, when brand new, but over time it may become stuck, and the hinge starts filing away at its side. I was troubleshooting something completely different and sprayed all the hinges with silicon spray. It loosened that bushing! And since it's worn and no longer round, it now catches and makes a horrible sound! I put some thick grease around it, and it sort of helps, but it needs to be replaced. So there you go! SN 95 mustang.
My 2008 mini Cooper started making this sound out of blue. And whenever i tried to Open the door more than one pin it feels like im gonna break it off. Can it be because of loose screws as well? Because when i looked at the body screws they were fine. The movement is happening inside the door.
I wish this fixed mine :( Mine is the strap. It's made of steel and has developed a ledge that catches and pops. As far as I can tell, it has to be replaced. Only problem is Isuzu hasn't made my vehicle in 20 years and there are no replacement parts. Every one of these vehicles door straps pop in the front. It does appear that they used the same straps in the front and back, and a lot of the back doors don't pop on these. I'm going to try to put back straps in the front, then I'll let you know if it works. The simplest and cheapest option if to unpin the strap, push it inside the door and then use a piece of nylon band(like a piece of a ratchet strap cord) to attach the door to the pillar. You lose the intermediate catches but at least the pillar won't twist if the door opens too hard. Jeep used this method for decades on the Wrangler.
Gonna have to look in a bit. Think mine is the top hinge though.. got mad bc the wind swung it and hit my leg. I folded the door backwards after that..🤷😡
Hey Cyd. Thanks so much for your helpful videos. Wondering if you have any ideas for a door that got flung open in the wind. Now it pops when I just open in a few inches, no real pop when closing. Any ideas?
I have a similar issue with my 1988 e class, the driver side door makes a loud snap sound when I open it to a certain degree. I've tried looking at what might cause it and notice that the arm suddenly moves up or down when the sound occurs

What needs to be addressed is the poor design of the friction surface in these check stays. I had a dealer that sold me a ACR30R Previa whose driver's stay failed and I pressed for him to replace it under warranty. The new stay lasted exactly twelve months. Money spinner! This design has been around since at least the 1950s and has ALWAYS been cheap-and-cheerful (actually, shocking), and I have owned half-a-dozen cars with it. I put golden syrup on mine for stickness (my stays are tight) rather than spend a fortune replacing them. If the stay makes a cracking noise in the sun, I know the syrup is working. If not, more syrup, lol.
It may well be the pin at the bracket then. If it's never cleaned and lubed it will wear and produce the same sort of noise. You could drill the pin out and replace with a short bolt.

I'm not familiar with the Previa, but our C1 has a cheap-shit Toyota designed check arm too. The Saab ones are really good.
ment randel and hopkirk lol
It's okay, gibberish is my second language
I tried tightening it, it just wouldn't budge. Do i need a special torque wrench instead of an electric screwdriver with the correct bit?
An ordinary 1/2 inch ratchet will do just fine. An electric screwdriver is unlikley to be strong enough.
It didn't work for me. The problem persists.
It may well be the pin at the bracket then. If it's never cleaned and lubed it will wear and produce the same sort of noise. You could drill the pin out and replace with a short bolt.
