The mechanism that you call it is called a Door Check. Don't use engine oil it is not designed for hinges. My door check on my 2004 GMC Sierra was squeaking and I sprayed it with a very good spray lubricant and it got 10 times worse so I took it off so I could spray it better and it didn't help. I believe it is recommended to you silicone grease on hinges and the door check. I'll have to get some to see if that will help otherwise I will replace it.
Hi Eddie and thanks for sharing and watching! You're right, if the door check is damaged, lubrication won't help. But it's worth the try before starting the repair, I guess. Regarding silicone grease, tried it in the form of a spray (if we're talking about the same thing) and to be honest it sort of evaporates quickly, especially during summer. But it's certainly worth the try. Thanks and all the best to you.
@@DespairRepair hmm.. but if cleaning with water any chance for the hinges to rust? Or does lubricant penetrate any remaining water and attach to the metal?
Hi and thanks for watching! If the door stopper is the problem (dry but not damaged) and you use lithium grease, the fix should last at least a year. If the hinges are the problem and you use some oil or grease spray and manage to lubricate them properly it should also last for a year, if not longer. A minus to the longevity of repair is higher outside temperatures, if you live in a warmer climate it may last less. This is from my own experience. All the best!
Don't ever apply WD 40 to any hinge, doorlock or keylock. This will work to clean. Wipe dry and apply white lithium. Use only graphite powder for key locks.
Do not put WD40 or any solvent based lubricant on the plastic check strap. YOU MUST USE a synthetic based lube on the plastic check strap such as silicone grease.
@@jasond.3229Works only for a short time because it degreased the hinge, but without lubricant it will fail much sooner. People should stop perpetuating the rumor and misusing WD-40
Thank you. It's hard to grow without a father that can teach you things like this.

Wd40 is not a lubricant, it is a solvent.
i have this issue on my both front door. But the mecanism thing actually feels that its loose.
Tighten the screws :)
Perfect. Exactly what I needed to know. Thank you!
You're welcome and glad if the video helped 🙂
I can already tell that’s a Volkswagen I have the same problem 😭
What can you clean it with prior to lubricating? Tubbing alcohol?
Hi and thanks for watching!
I would recommend using some detergent and water
so all the grit comes off.

One question since I'm new to car repairs...i have butter yellow like grease can i use that instead for supposedly longer term protection?
I tried that. Even spray grease, ptfe spray lube.
What's the "mechanism" called cause mine broke and I'm trying to fix it
Hi, and thanks for watching! I think the proper name is the door arrester.

Thanks dad
so is this a temporary fix , how long does it last for ?

@@DespairRepair can I use the lithium grease spray for the hinges because I think there the problem?
@@aquablue9713 yes of course. Just try to get as much grease as possible into the hinge.

Would bike chain oil be good enough?
Hi and thanks for watching. Yes, I think it would help.
Nah if it’s a car and u use bike chain oils you can get sued by both the car company and bike chain oil company. 10/10 don’t suggest bud
