    Thank you very much for posting this video. I managed to fix the throttle fault on my dx6i by following your instructions. Horizon hobby UK (spektrum distributor in the UK) were useless. They didn't t even reply to my email! Needless to say, I will not buy any of their products in future!!!! People in the UK be aware. The faulty transmitter cost me 2crashes. After the repair done by myself, the throttle works perfectly. Thanks again for your video guide!

    I remember pulling some of the glue off, but what stumped me for awhile were the silver "e" clips that hold the axles in place. They are next to each potentiometer on the opposite side of each gimble frame. After wiping the resistive area inside each pot with Caig Pro Gold I reassembled, but never put the glue back on. I think I would use hot melt glue if I did.

    That's good to hear. Mine has been going good since I fixed it, too. Hopefully we'll both get many years of use out of our transmitters.

    My DX6i did the EXACT same thing. cleaned the pots real well, bent the little brush tabs up slightly, and its perfect. works like new! Plus I was able to adjust the tension on the joysticks a bit tighter. Have them set just how I like them. Perfection!!!

    Happened to my son today, luckily it was the winch control on his Seawind yacht, effectively stuck on aircraft full throttle. Doesn't inspire confidence when we fly the Radian Pro. Managed to fix it with a small paint brush and a drop of white spirit applied the to the back of the pot, instantly back to normal. Thanks for the video, might have to go a bit deeper if it happens again. What if it was the elevator or aileron? Hope that my DX7s is more reliable.

    I must say that I also had a problem with a DX6I, lost the signal, resulting in loosing two planes.
    I sent it back to Horizon hobby, they said that they could find no fault but sent me a new one as a gesture go good faith.

    Thank you for helping me out, not knowing it. This was the kind of info type (no bs) video I like. Got a new 4503d, played/set up on it for 1 day and the throttle completed went away. ESC would not even recognize and allow operation. Did what you showed and it is back up and running. Thanks again.

    I had the same problem with the throttle pot on my DX6i and for several months I would undo the back cover and hit the pot with a pliers a couple of times and it would work again. Eventually I phoned Horizon and they said "send it in and we;ll look at it". I did and they fixed it and sent it back. No charge, and they didn't even ask when I bought it.
    I would suggest a phone call rather than email.

    I would liked to have seen what you did inside the pot. Because if all it needed was cleaning, there is a MUCH easier way to do so, and I do it on all my TXs and light dimmers, motor speed controllers, etc. periodically. Get a product called Fader Lube. It is a spray cleaner - lubricant made specifically for this task. It does not short out the connections, so can be sprayed and used immediately. All you need do in a TX is remove the back so you can see the little pot housings. Pretty much every pot has at least one kind of opening in the housing. Find it, point the little extension tube into it, and spray a nice blast of Fader Lube in there. Work the control a bit. Repeat for all the other controls. Put the cover back on, and happy flying! It does wonders for the old Esky FM controllers, which would get really bad when they got dirty. Hope someone finds this info useful. :)

    this was very helpful, thanks. My DX6i also was outside the suspect date code range, but my rudder stopped working this morning. Fortunately it only happened as I was spooling up my 450, took the weight off the skids and had no control of the tail. A lot of people have told me the DX6i isn't a very good controller. Apparently the higher models, even the DX7 use higher quality components. My DX6i probably only has around 10hrs flying time on it, before it played up.
    I carried out your instructions above and it fixed the problem. Only extra thing I did was re-tension the brush contact inside the POT in an effort to promote better contact on the track.
    Now that I've fixed the DX6i, I'll probably start looking at replacing it with a better model. No doubt this will be an ongoing problem. I was lucky this time that I didn't ditch my bird, but I'm not going to risk it again. I'll keep the DX6i for my little MCPX which I can usually ditch without destroying.

    Nice, thanks for the video...
    I preordered my DX6i when they first came out, until recently never stored it in a case, and have only had a trim tab problem once. ...
    I removed it and reinforced it amd have yet to need to put the 3rd party trim tabs and scroll wheel/button in it, but there was at that time an outfit making really nice aluminum trim tabs and scroll wheels....
    the trims are a weak and poor design... mine are all 4 reinforced with careful application of some CA and tiny bits of paper towel to the tabs. ... hokey fiberglass job... but it's been good for years since...
    thanks again. for the video... I periodically check the monitor screen as part of a preflight for a days flying ....

    All I did to fix mine was remove connection from circuit board , put a dab of oil on those pins , and reconnected it. Works perfectly now. A poor connection was all it was. Nothing wrong with the parts you dug into.

  • @propellerscience
    @propellerscience  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @bobcamphaus - Did you ever try re-soldering all the connections on the 5 in 1? Most likely that is where your problem is unless you can see specific damage.

    I have a dx6i which is not a part of recall, which malfunctioned after a few months. Monitor shows that I'm full-throttling all the time, regardless of stick position. I always get 100% throttle. I dont want to send it in since I'll be paying quite a bit for repair and spektrum wouldn't tell me the specs or part number for their potentiometer.
    Did you have to get rid of a bunch of glue before you were able to take apart the joystick, because that's currently stopping me

  • @bobcamphaus
    @bobcamphaus 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @propellerscience There wasn't any visible damage. The connection was fine, but after a minute the motor was burning hot and not working. The new motor did the same thing. HH said there was a short on the board and I should buy a BNF. Never crashed it so it wasn't worth spending that much with no guarantee (I've broken plenty that were my fault :). I used the 5 in 1 to make an rc balsa glider which was fun to do so not a total loss (only bad tail). By the way, very nice work on the TX fix!

    i had to call Horizon the other day. after seeing your video, i was a bit apprehensive. lol. my DX6i is working great but the board on my Blade MQX Quad-copter was doing weird things. when i would throttle up, it would cut out. (Low voltage cutout) the guy was wayyy cool. with minimal questions asked, he said he would send me a new board. I bet it has something to do with Horizon producing the toys, but not the radio. (This morning i bumped the throttle D/R and it snapped off. lol bad day)

    I had an msr for a little over a month that started to piro. I replaced the tail motor and that did not help, it was the 5 in 1. HH would do nothing despite never crashing it. I replaced the 5 in 1 ($60), but of course the new tail motor was damaged by the original 5 in 1. The MSR is fun, but not for $220 (5in1 + 2 tail motors)! I thought the reason for their high cost was they stand behind their products! I enjoy my parkzone planes and 120SR, but I expected more from HH customer service..

    Great problem solving vid. I just got a new Blade 180 QX HD RTF. I don't like the game controller style transmitter that came with it. The throttle is real touchy in the middle when trying to hover but it's great to fly indoors. It's not noisy to me like some claim it is. So I bought a used DX6i off of Ebay. I hope I don't have any major problems with it. I've never had any problems from Horizon Hobby customer service in the few times I've dealt with them. In fact the camera that with came the 180 QX didn't work and they're sending me a replacement. I know the camera image quality is not very good and I might not use it that much but I want what I paid for. Anyway Thanks for the great vid.

      Abhi aero I don't know what type of pot to use, I opened mine up and cleaned it. You can check the resistance on one of the other pots on the two outer terminals. Buy a linear taper pot, not audio.

    I was able to to pick up a Dx6e that had a battery plugged in backwards, fried the board and swapping out my gimbals in the 6x6i for the ones out of the burnt up Xe. Took the pots apart first and was surprised they working at all looks like they put way to much lube in them at the factory

  • @Cornz38
    @Cornz38 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It is a pity you neglected to show the inside of the potentiometer. It would have been interesting to see exactly what the problem was. Excess lubricant? No lubricant leading to build of of carbon? Track damage (in which case it wasn't fixed). What are the values of the pots? Video could have been so much more.... Still, thanks...

    Thats great. I have had a dx6 and only done around 50 cycles of use and the transmitter will not bind. I have been told by my local model shop that the fault could be the signal board is faulty because the orange spectrum light does not come on...any idea ??

    I got a question I had to replace the fuselage of my t 28 because of a crash where I lost signal during landing. When I got the new body I put all the original electronics ,ESC motor servos etc, when I plug my battery up the receiver it has a red hold light that doesn't flash. I have an AR600 receiver from spektrum. Has any1 else had this problem?

  • @propellerscience
    @propellerscience  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I didn't have any screws left over because by the time I made the video it was the second time I did it! The pot looked clean, so I'm not sure what happened. Maybe just my fiddling with it fix it, but it's still working great.

  • @MrBostechman
    @MrBostechman 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    My MSR did that when I bound it to the DX6i. It hovered dead-on though which was great lol - it just wouldnt stop the piros. Throttle worked great so i cold go up and down and piro all over the place. But no rudder. Then I realized the DX6i Rudder channel didn't work. Which eventually brought me here after some google research about rudder channels being defective on the Tx. Horizon is general OK with service - better than Banana Hobby and Nitroplanes that's for sure.

    At first I thought you were a bit uhh crazy... I have a DX6i, three months old little use. Purchased a T 28 Trojan flew it once and had a minor crash. Second time out my dx would jam the rudder to the back on the servo when plugging in the battery. I thought it was receiver at first because I connected the rudder to the elevator channel and moving the elevator stick the rudder worked normal. After trying several things I decided it had to be the TX.. Just happen to see your video when looking at why we can't buy just the stick pot. I had nothing to lose so just followed your steps and to my HUGE supprise, the rudder stick is now working like new. I just used rubbing alcohol and lightly cleaned the throttle thing after lifting the three tabs. Blew it dry by mouth, put it all together and wala.. it works fine now. It wasn't a concern since I can land any plane with ailerons but being a new dx6i you want it to ALL work. Thank You A Million Times!!!

    Horizon Hobby use to be my go to place for RC equipment. But I ordered a $170 Spektrum 9 channel DSMX receiver and one of the $35+shipping remote satellites didn't work at all. So I Emailed them about it, never got a reply. I never miss an Email and run a business. They use to be a lot better about customer service, now it's all about the $$$. So they think, I no longer shop there. GrandRC or Amain have been very good to me about customer service. $30 and hour to repair something they know has quality control problems, pfft, lame. Great you fixed it yourself! Grandpa always said if you want something done right, do it yourself.. (I think he was right)

      @propellerscience  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine is a Blade MSR. It's still working great after years of abuse. The transmitter is also still working fine since I fixed it.
      No motor power? The Tx must be working if your swash plates move. Sometimes you need to trim down your throttle so the heli thinks it's off. The motor won't turn on until the throttle is completely off first for safety. There's also a monitor mode in the Specktrum you can check your throttle with. See the end of this video for that.

    Wish I had seen this before I bought one yesterday! LOL Should have know better when I crashed my new Blade 120 sr and almost everything broke. Parts are either, too thin, Brittle or weak. My Syma F! Armor is nearly indestructible

    I personally would have looked to see if the part number for the pot was on the net. Some company supplies replacement part for these transmitters and I bet the serial number is easy to find.

    giorgi22bm - As far as I know, if you have that problem you need to sent the TX back to Horizon Hobby and get the software reprogrammed.

    I finally lucked out and bought a DX 18 for $450, it is a beautiful radio and wouldn't trade it for nothing else except a Jeti. I have music gear and never sent it to a technician, I fix it myself. All electronic companies function the same way, it's not just spectrum.

    Then why not ring them and speak to them? i have done that a few times now, and they have always been very helpful, and always sent me the stuff i needed, Eg, new roller unit, trim switches, also the plastic trim buttons on the outside, that said, it is a cheap radio, very cheaply made.

    Same here, Bought a little (very overpriced) mcx2 in a local hobby store, turned out to be a early model with 1 dodgy motor that stalled easily when turning left & a really badly jittering servo that threw the heli around in the air. Horizon were having none of it & upon searching it seems to be pretty common for them to not back their products. I think the talk of excellent customer support comes from either themself or "friendly" reviewers & forum rogues. They play the marketing game well.

    i have a question, (i have a dx6e) yesterday my transmitter fell off my shelf and now my right hand joystick for left and right turns doesnt work propertly... do you know how to fix this? can you help me?

    • @propellerscience
      @propellerscience  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Open it up and find out what happened. It's probably just a connector that got loose. The joysticks plug into the main board and can pop out when falling off shelves, and such.

    i dropped my dx7s and broke the right side gimble. They told me the same thing they wont sell you the part. They want you to spend 50 bucks in shipping the radio back and forth plus 30 bucks labor and parts. So i was planning on buying another back radio anyways so i bought a new radio. Needed a 8 channel receiver for a new plane so it was a no brainer. If anyone has parts for my dx7s respond to this we can work something out.

      Spektum is garbage? What a load of BS. DSMX works great. My DX6i works great for years. Just need to adjust and lube up gimbals. For a cheap, non bearing gimbal Tx, it sure feels nice and works nice for the price.
      DX9 is a superb radio too.. you are just nutty.

      you obviously have too much money and no brains... my $120 9xr will do twice as much as a dx6i and costs half as much... your just too stupid to figure it out.

      Oh, I'm stupid? You're the idiot spouting nonsense and complete lies about Spektrum products and cannot even respond to someone talking sense, but have to resort to attack because you're argument are weak crap. Maybe you couldn't get them to work because you are the stupid one here.

      I don't have any issues with using my DX6, but I do have a problem with them not selling me a switch, easily replaceable, on my out-of-warranty radio.

    • @joshuanorris5860
      @joshuanorris5860 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jak Conrad what switch? Ohh one of the toggles on the radio? Yeah thats super lame actually.
      I like my dx6i but i dont like that it only takes about 5volts and not much room for batteries.
      My rc truck remote takes twice the voltage and twice the batteries, i kind of wish my heli remote was the same.

    Typical Spektrum product. It's the most cheaply made radio on the market, and I'm including Turnigy and FlySky in that. Those two brands are junk too, but at least they are priced accordingly. Get a Futaba, Hitec, or Airtronics radio and have something you can trust. I own a DX6i just for ultra micro park flyers, and it has a bad rudder now too. A pot failure is simply unacceptable in a hobby grade radio on top of all the other problems that Spektrum radios have had.
