Your stories brought back a lot of memories. We used to go to Ocean City Restaurant in San Francisco for Dim Sum (unfortunately, they closed years ago). We liked the quality of their food and luxurious ambience/decor. Bo Nay tea was always our favorite, so we ordered that every time and it was always comped. As for the "fighting for the check" scenario, that is something that brought back some childhood memories. Orientals don't just grab for the check at Dim Sum...they do that whenever friends or family get together for a meal. I guess that represents their generosity and their delight in sharing a meal. Really enjoy your videos, Danny...keep them coming!! :)

On our last visit to Las Vegas, we stayed off the strip for all of our meals. There is some really good food being served all over town. We had dim sum at Ping Pang Pong and it was really good. And that casino was a nice break from the crush of people, noise and agitation that the strip has become. And by the way, the "bonus content" was priceless, easily as good as the original subject matter. It's like a version of the old Hawaiian "talk story"

    Loved your review!
We need to take you with us when we go for dim sum - you know how to order, and the good stuff! That har gow!!!
How’d you eat it all yourself?
Very good etiquette tips too, good to know.
I know the check-fighting, been through it many times. And my Mom would tell me to grab it too.
But one of my friends is too smart - he intercepted the waiter in the back and paid the bill already!
But I have one friend who never seems to pick up the tab. So she doesn’t get invited much, ha ha, ha, cheapo woman, she makes plenty of money.

and I thank you for your kind and encouraging words Debi! :) In life, there is no right or wrong when it comes to lifestyle, there is a whole spectrum of lifestyles people are living and are very happy with it, and a whole lot of people that is longing for change from one perfectly good lifestyle to a different perfectly good lifestyle and these people feel the latter would be better than the former. and these people are wrong. because if there are people living it and are happy, it is not inherently wrong. I know married people who are miserable and want out! and single people who fret as the years roll by and are "still" not married. My philosophy is simply to enjoy whatever comes my way! :) thank you all again for watching and commenting! :)

It’s time for you to take a trip up north to the Toronto area since you like Cantonese food and casinos. Skip the downtown Chinatown and head directly to Scarborough, Markham, and Richmond Hills. Thought can spend a year and not cover all the Chinese restaurants. Many of the higher end Cantonese restaurants offer discounted morning dim sum. The quantity and variety of the larger sized Chinese restaurants located along just Highway 7, Woodbine, Steeles, Midland, Kennedy, McCowen are just staggering, not to mention the hundreds, if not thousands, of the smaller mom & pop restaurants scattered throughout the region.

When I want to pay for the group, usually as i walk in I need t go to the washroom to wash my hands. If there is a manager or owner, i quietly hand him my card and tell him to please use it, and I shall add the tip later when I sign, and do not bring anything to the table That way, the waiter is not put into a situation, and I can say, "Your company alone made my day, so please do not worry or fuss about anything. of course, it depends on the social milieu.
Being an Indian, I can easily do this with the management, and even Thais; if with other Indians, one can easily speak in a way that preserves good etiquette, and does not allow any one-upmanship from my end. I believe that in German, the word GIFT means poison, and is why an Indian will work very hard to prevent anything of the sort. However, these forms belong to a generation that is now going, and from social circles that understood the basic etiquette, respectful forms, and heartfelt words that smooth away all ruffled feather. You do not allow feathers to be ruffled in the first place.
Towards the end of the meal one can quietly go again to the "washroom' and sign the card and tip tab. Or, another possibility is to let the group pay the tip so there is no feeling of being under obligation. Would such behavior be accepted in Chinese/ Cantonese polite society, especially when elders are part of the group. For us, the presence of elders makes all of this easy since you can say how much honor one ahjs been allowed to pay to the eelders, and that their blessings and company are something that should remain undefiled by any material consideration. And actually mean it. And I never go out with people from my workplace to socialize and eat so I do not face any such problems from that angle Americans generally feel this path puts them under some sort of obligation, the guilt gene I guess. Not so with my own kind, provided they come from similar backgrounds; Routghly similar is fine!! What do you think? Our systems of saving face and offering respect might differ substantially in other ethnic groups?
