Suspension Diagnosis with a GoPro Camera

- I had a rattle in the front suspension of my old 1999 Infiniti QX4 so I mounted a GoPro camera in various positions to see what was going on. I knew the boots on the constant velocity joints were torn and I planned to replace the CV joints anyway but wanted to know if that was causing the noises I heard. The video confirmed that the problem was a worn out lower ball joint on the passenger side.

This is like doctor using endoscope ! Very educative for automobile engineering students. I NEVER SAW ANY WORKSHOP DOING THIS TO DIAGNOSE CAR PROBLEM !
My Lexus was killing the battery over night and I checked everything I could then I threw my gopro in the trunk and closed it..TaDa light stayed on..! Fixed ...!

Seen better days....need to do lot work on front drive suspension on this rig. Surprised you didnt notice flogged out CV joint, torn rubber boot, loss of grease.

Can you give us some insight as to how you attached the GoPro to the car? What available accessories did you use? I'm thinking of buying a GoPro for similar reasons but not sure where to start.
I used a bicycle handlebar mount to mount it to the sway bar and a strong spring clamp mount for other positions. There are a lot of mounts available for GoPro cameras.
How do you mount a camera to the bottom of your car like this? I need to do this for one of my cars. What camera did you use and are there any videos on how to do this camera setup?
Yeah, you can see the ball joint movement, and the ripped CV dust boot as well.
They could have found the balljoint without the camera though. Lift the tire off the ground with a jack under the control arm, then pry under the tire with a bar and they'd feel that balljoint move.
On the other side this is a great video to show to newbies so they can see why bad balljoints knock.
The rubber that cover the axle is broken.
Dirt will make a mess in that articulation soon or later.
And its looks like dry

Water and dirt will get in there and ruin that cv joint

I kept hearing an annoying high pitched sound in my garage. I checked all over my new car for several days and finally gave up. I was about to call the dealership when I heard that sound from the garage again, but the car was in the driveway.
Turns out the battery back up on the opener was warning me of low battery life.

Interesting footage but I could have just jacked it up and found the bad ball joint the old fashioned way.
Man! How could both outer ball joint’s dust boots be torn?! Even a small like 1/32" crack is unacceptable in those, but on this poor car the two boots are completely ripped off!

noise dillution from wind was bad
The CV boot is split wide open and it's clicking.
I replaced both half shafts but the noise was coming from the ball joint.

do you have the specs of the GoPro camera you use?
Don't need a GoPro to see that the rubber boots are broken and that there's a serious oil leak from the engine bay...

Not to be an ass about it, but you could have found this in 5 minutes using a jack. New tech while interesting to see in action is not better than traditional diagnostics for simple problems

That's gonna be one expensive fix.
Ball joint is not expensive. Usually you need to buy the whole arm but it is still affordable.

Defects are so obvious. No need to put camera for diagnostic purpose.
