    I find myself repeating this over and over again. "We're living in a wonderful time!" As it pertains to photography, especially since I began in the dark ages, way too many photographers take way too much for granted! With all of the truly incredible equipment we have today, there is no reason to complain yet that complain train still is a runaway freighter raging down the tracks!

      That’s a solid point. With things like motorized gimbals and lights like these, aspiring movie makers can make very compelling films on a tiny budget compared to times past.

    Nice balanced summary.. its obvious you had fun playing with the special effects . I see this being useful for intimate close up or small group portraits and video. And on location where AC power is not a given. its not for strobe lighting a big space or capturing large groups at a distance.. but looks like a great all in one light tool.

    Great review Dustin , looks very versatile with a high quality output... really loved the stills shots you were getting out of it - especially the subtle ones of the girl by the window - catchlight etc.
    The SFX + lightweight mounting options seem to be icing on top.... Do you think 1x light would be enough to light a small group of 4 / family shot outside from a short,mid distance?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kane, glad you like the look of the Rotolight AEOS. Dustin did get some fantastic results didn't he?! I would recommend the AEOS 2 light kit for this purpose to be honest, just to ensure the group is evenly lit, particularly if you're trying to use them as a fill against the sunshine. The lights have a 50 degree beam angle so you get a lovely even spread, but I wouldn't want to promise that it would be enough to light a whole family with one. We sell the AEOS as a 2 Light Kit option if you're interested. Best wishes

    I've had a set of two (the previous generation, without built-in Elinchrom receiver), and have mixed feelings about them. Hereunder My observations:
    Positives:
    - It's very easy to create a strong balance between shadows and highlights with the AEOS, that is to say, they don't throw a bland flat light upon the subject, unless positioned so they face three subject head-on. Excellent for dramatic, contrasty, as well as low-key portraiture.
    - As you mentioned, a rather broad adjustability of colour temperate.
    - the effects you mentioned (for video)
    - function as static LED lights, as well as strobes (you stressed that, too).
    - The strobe function allows any shutter speeds you want, not limited to camera's max. flash sync speed.
    - Has a sync port (and built-in Elinchrom antenna, in the case of the upgraded model).
    Negatives:
    - Most models have hard time coping with the light it throws; it tends to blind them
    - Necessitates slow shutter speeds when lighting with it, as it does not generate nearly sufficient light to shoot at, say, 1/500 of a second. My experience is - anything above 1/80th of a second will end in underexposure. For that reason, its use outdoors is particularly limited.
    - The body is too plasticy. The rubber pad at the ballhead plate mount is too flimsy; the weight of the unit and the battery will cause it to spin around the mount, particularly particularly if mounted at an angle. Mounting on a ball head at an angle repeatedly will also damage the said rubber and likely also the plastic base it's embedded in. A use of an ugly yoke (extra expense, extra weight and tricky to store two in the bag) is absolutely necessary.
    - Expensive, as you mentioned. The batteries and chargers, too, are expensive (as you stressed).
    - The XLR port is as good as useless: it appears to be a strange standard I haven't haven't been able find anything suitable for. Nor is its use clear: no mention by RotoLight on its utility.

      Dustin at 2:03 in video you say that the flash power is 200% of its continuous light power, so does that mean that if light is set to 50% in continuous and when you use it as a flash it give light equivalent to 100% of continuous light mode ?

  • @anjanakkw
    @anjanakkw 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    How does the flash power works in Aeos? I heard its ×2 power of the continuous light. Does that mean if i keep the continuous light to 25% and the flash output will be 50% power or its only 200% (double of the full power) in flash mode?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are using a trigger, it will actually TTL. So the output will be TTL but to the limit of 200% output of the unit.

      Steer clear: the chances are, you, too, will be pestered into despair with the batteries that cost an arm and a leg, yet die within the first charge or two. Check reviews of the AD600 Pro batteries on B&H Photo. The same appears to be the case with AD400 Pro batteries.
      I'd like to think the issue is fairly isolated, but it's not: all 3 of My AD600 Pro batteries (that's all I have) stopped working past the first charge.

      Oh, by the way, I've sent numerous emails, tweets, Facebook messages (before deactivating My account) - the charlatans at Godox just ignore you, then pay contractors like Robert Hall and like sellouts to post some rubbish video blaming the user for crappy batteries randomly giving up the ghost. Very nice review. I am a big fan of Rotolights. One very small point of correction if I may. You're obviously an intelligent and well spoken guy, but the word videographer is pronounced "videe-ahgrapher" not video-ahgrapher. Just like photographer is pronounced "photah-grapher", not, photo-ahgrapher. I'm not trying to be picky, but as a videographer, it's nice to have the title pronounced correctly. Again, very nice review, very fair and very thorough. Perhaps the best I've seen for Rotolight.

      Hi Dwayne, just to confirm: We have the Elinchrom Skyport receiver built into all of our lights, so you can purchase the transmitter and control it wirelessly. This will not only allow you to trigger the lights but also to adjust settings remotely e.g. colour temperature. However if users don't want to use the Elinchrom system, all of our lights have a PC sync port so you can plug in a third party receiver that will then communicate with your matching transmitter to wirelessly trigger the flash. However please note this won't allow you to adjust the settings remotely. Hope that helps!

    Run power in and out of it??? Are you talking about the DMX control?? Do some research like read the manual will you? And if you want to come across as a image specialist: don't shoot overexposed video of yourself.
    3150kelvin isn't really warm, it's just above most tungsten, at home most lamps are closer to 2800K. 6500 kelvin is not above daylight either. Daylight is generally 5000K - 6500K
    Decents shots in between but you really don't know much about this type of light, next time do some research. Other than that, I'm sure it is a helpful review for people who don't know these type of lights.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can power another device from it (per Rotolight). Almost no daylight bulbs are sold over 6000k, but you seem to be just nitpicking, anyway.

    • @C---M
      @C---M 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Not knowing what two ports on the light are for and inventing some power nonsense is not nitpicking. You can not power another device from this light. Not knowing that for video, this is a video light with flash features you are reviewing in a video, 6500K is pretty normal, during the day sunlight can move all the way up to 9500K.
      So you are not a video guy, fine no problem, but accept you have things to learn like properly exposing the face... come on 1 stop overexposed face with such a soft light is not nitpicking it's an embarrassment. If you can't even correct it in post you might even have gone 2 stops overexposed, whatever it was, it is amateur hour on the video.

    (( Rotolight / Sony Pocket Flash Important Information ))
    Hello for all of the individuals that are looking at Rotolight AEOS PRO & the NEO PRO and wondering if this product is for you let me give you some information that might help you make a Better / Proper decision.
    I will be directing my comments about the AEOS PRO and the NEO PRO. If you are working in a controlled environment like a studio where you have absolute control over your lighting. Or if you are doing videography in a low light situation. Or if you are shooting outdoors in a very gloomy or cloudy day and you are OK with your lights only being 3 to 4 feet from your subject. Then these two lights will work perfectly fine for you.
    But if you are working in an environment where there is a significant amount of window light or your environment has a sufficient amount of lighting provided. You will find that these lights are extremely limited. If you notice they never use a light meter indicating to their viewers the strength or the lack of strength the lights provide.
    That all being said I have to give the lights credit where credit is due they do have amazing technology incredible technology wrapped up in these lights. It is the power of the lights that I have an issue with and only the power.
    I was sucked in by all of the technology and truly did not realize the environment that they were using the lights in. Either in a very dark environment or very low lit environment. Even when they use them outdoors notice that the environment is very gloomy or cloudy. It is never a bright sunny day.
    I will now give you the Data on why I have expressed such comments. I purchased both the AEOS PRO and the NEO PRO and when I started working with them I was confused by the lack of power coming from the constant light that these lights provided. I thought at first that it was just my imagination maybe I was doing something wrong.
    So I lowered the lighting in my studio so that my light meter was reading at 1.00 F stop for light in my studio which means the lighting in my studio was extremely low having no effect on my testing. Then I set my camera at 250th our second and my ISO at 1000. I then put both the NEO PRO and my Sony pocket flash to 5 feet exactly from my light meter that was set on a stand. I set my NEO PRO at 1/50 of a second which is what they recommend and I have it set at max plus Power. And the Calvin is at 4800 and the modeling light was set at 40%.
    These are the exact settings for every test I made with all of the Rotolights that I tested.
    I then set the Constant light on the AEOS PRO at 100% and received a F stop of 6.3
    I then triggered the flash off on the AEOS 2, and I received a 7.0 F stop.
    I then set my Sony pocket flash off at 1/32 of a second to receive 6.3 F-stop to match the power of the AEOS PRO.
    I then installed the NEO PRO at 100% on constant lighting at all of the exact same settings, never moving from 5 feet and I received a 4.5 F stop.
    With the data that I have provided I have shown that the AEOS PRO and the NEO PRO are less than half the power of a pocket flash. And if that’s the case then they should notify or inform their viewers or purchasers of such information. So such individuals can make a proper decision on their purchase.
    ((( I reached out to Rotolight and here was thier response !
    Hi Patrick,
    Depending on your flash meter some do have problems reading LED flash that might be an issue but without knowing what you are using it hard to know. Also where are you taking the flash reading from flash meters are designed to take direct only light so you need to measure from ½ way between the edge of the badge and rim of the light, if you measure from the centre of the light it will give you incorrect results.
    With the Pro lights we have pushed the constant light, but the flash should still be a bit brighter, I believe it is about 2/3 stop, if you are testing on 1/250s them you will not get the full power of the flash it has a 1/50s duration.
    Something sounds wrong as at 6ft, I would expect f6.3 at ISO 100 without the dome, we test at 1/60s and mid pit of the light around 4600K. )))
    Basically Rotolight is acknowledging that my information might be slightly off but we are still looking at Half of the power of a pocket flash. And if I would have known that I would not have purchased these lights. I personally feel we are being misled to some degree.
    I have given you a link below of an individual that has pretty much done the same testing as I have. I think mine was a little bit more precise. That being said I would watch the video all the way through so you’re able to come to your own conclusion.
