"Used in Anger" Episode 2: Lighting (feat. Rotolight AEOS 2 and NEO 3 Pro Editions)

  • I hadn't intended to have ANY of my "Used in Anger" episodes sponsored, but as it turns out this was pretty much the perfect way to share my experience with both Rotolight models "in anger." Rotolight is seeing this for the first time the same day you are, however, and had NO INPUT to it (as is always the case with ANY sponsor). Why the sponsorship? Because they want to get the word out on updated versions of both lights, now on Indiegogo -- and there's not much time left before campaign prices are gone. Check 'em out at www.rotolight.com/timetogopro - and let me know what you think.

    So the big difference between your use of the Aeos 2 vs the Neo 3, is that you were shooting video in the interview situation and used the Aeos 2 in continuous lighting mode, where as, on the night photo walk you wanted to use the Neo 3 in flash mode…but it didn’t support TTL flash.
    Any reason why you didn’t use the Neo3 in continuous output on the night street photography walk?
    I don’t work for Rotolight, and I’m not being paid to defend their product, but it seemed a little harsh on the Neo3 vs the Aeos, when they both do essentially the same thing, just that the Neo3 is not as large or as powerful.

    I have the Neo 3 and use it as I intended which for me is ignoring the flash function (I have a Godox AD200 for that) and using it as fill or side or back or hair, on or off camera, for photo and video. Works well. A couple more years and I suspect will have some combo of the two in a single unit ie, the video light on my Godox is trash and the flash on my Neo 3 ain’t great, but combined 🎉

    So what i can’t figure out anywhere.. is the power. How powerful would you say the big guy is next to say, a profoto b10?

    • @jaym5938
      @jaym5938 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Know the difference: Rotolights are constant lights - LED's that flash on and off. The Profoto B10 is a xenon strobe unit. No comparison.

    I don't quite understand why TTL is the dealbreaker for you on the Neo 3...my understanding is the flash is just one power on the Neo 3 so all you'd have to do is adjust your exposure to what you want. (I just placed my preorder for the Neo 3 Pro and I've never actually used one myself for full disclosure)

    • @rgreeneish
      @rgreeneish ปีที่แล้ว

      Constant lights are basically only TTL. So I don't know what that is a deal breaker either. And their "flash mode" Is basically one stop boosted constant light.

    Hugh, I've been a subscriber for years and owe you a debt of appreciation for the service you provide to the community. As if that weren't enough, I'll echo what many have said... the style of your delivery is both compelling and unique. Hold that thought.
    Perhaps even more so because of the respect you've earned among so many for your balanced, thoughtful content - I was disappointed to realize that roughly 30% of this video is LITERALLY an ad produced by the very brand you claim (in your own words) "had NO INPUT" to this video. Your experience with - and endorsement of - the product notwithstanding, this is a bridge too far IMHO. I hope the sponsorship dollars are worth the credibility capital spent to secure them.
    That said - I will continue to be a loyal subscriber. Please just keep it real, my man.

      Jonathan, thanks for the kind preface, but to your overarching lament: it IS real. No sponsorship is worth a hit to one’s integrity - at least in my book. I state very clearly up front what it is and what it isn’t - and why this sponsorship of this episode made sense to me - including being very clear about alternatives. I should add: the sequence at the very end of the episode is in fact Rotolight’s Indiegogo vid in its entirety. They did not ask me to include it and in fact did not make it available as a media asset. Thanks for watching - and, as I asked, telling me what you think.

    Rotolights are overhyped overpriced! Save your money and find cheaper solutions. I am stuck with AEOS and wish I never purchased them.

    Nobody can reliably or honestly report your experience until the AEOS 2 RGB. Rotolight has always been an overpriced, under-powered toy for cult consumers, who make excuses for their purchases that fall on deaf ears outside said cult.

    • @jaym5938
      @jaym5938 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      From the start, Rotolight should have included a xenon flash inside the center ring of their lights, instead of boasting HSS flashing that has nothing to do with HSS or the power of xenon light. A lot of people have been confused by this and made bad purchases.

    These are plastic. Horrible customer service. Mine arrived dead and I had to solder wires together. Switched to better customer service company and better quality.
    Why are we rewatching other videos at the beginning when I just want to watch this content.
    Fast forward a few years today using StellarPro Reflex S
    I’ll return again in the future

      Interesting - and disheartening for you clearly. I bought a Stella Pro Reflex but returned it immediately, so clearly you and I value things differently. But that’s fine. I’m more concerned with your assertion about customer service. What actually transpired and when?

    • @rgreeneish
      @rgreeneish ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a similar experience with their customer service. I will say they were friendly and responsive. But did not handle things the way I feel they should have. I had a brand-new Titan X1 that would not load updates due to some strange problem with the USB port. I repair electronics for a living, so I knew it was the light. not something that resetting it to factory specs was going to resolve. They wanted me to send it to them and pay $100 shipping each way to their service center in New York. So it was going to cost me $200 just to see if there was anything wrong with it. So I took it apart myself and found that when they build the light they pinched the USB data cable between the two halves of the case when they assembled it. Smashing the cable, thus killing the usb port. So their error was going to cost me $200. I fixed it myself and promptly sold it.

    B ((( Rotolight / Sony Pocket Flash Important Information )))
    Hello for those individuals that are thinking about purchasing the NEO PRO and the AEOS PRO lights. You need to be aware that these lights are only half the power of a Standard pocket flash. I did a thorough test on these lights with my Seckonic Light Meter for absolute accuracy. I set the AEOS Pro & a on Camera Flash 6 feet from my light meter. I then set my ISO at 500 I set the shutter speed at 250th of a second and my aperture at 2.8 . Using Flash at max power with the AEOS Pro then adjusting my on Camera Flash to match the exact same Power outage as the AEOS Pro . And found that the AEOS Pro was half the power of a 80 W. Pocket flash / on Camera Flash. Please understand what I am saying it is extremely important for you to know that these lights are only have to power of an on camera flash.
    Half the power that’s it. If you would like to know more I have placed a comment below this one to give you much more information if you are truly interested.

      The AEOS 2 is not half the power of a speedlight. It is less. But by all means just give the lightmeter reading at 6ft for both
