What do you think the Nameless King's birth name was? Faraam is the boring answer. I like Gwyn Jr or Gwynjamin personally. Please subscribe for more content like this. Thanks for watching!
That's true. I also think him being a "secret" optional boss lowers the chances of the fight even being considered canonical in the unlikely event of a Dark Souls 4. 50/50 he would just turn up again or there would be an item description saying "and he lived happily ever after with his cool dragon friends".
@@rickytebbe yeah that is true, gwyndolin was alive in ds3 so who knows lol. Time is already convoluted so I’d bet time in ancient dragon land is even more so
@@rickytebbein my personal opinion it is canon because in the ps4 dark souls 3 wallpaper we can see the ashen one in the boss room of the nameless king
The gravity of the Nameless Kings existence has always been profound to me, especially in a game like Dark Souls 3. In Dark Souls 3 you’re fighting the last dregs of this world, the Abyss Watchers, Yhorm, Aldritch, Lothric and Lorian, powerful though they may be still pale in comparison to those older champions. This world is rotting and the champions reflect that Then you have the Nameless King, the first and last of Gwyn’s line. He’s the last connection to Gywn that still remains, his family is all dead and he’s the last one standing. Historically speaking he holds so much more weight, gravitas and prestige then any other boss you fight. That’s just so, so cool to me.
straightwhite already mentioned Gael, but I also want to mention Midir being up there too. Midir is supposed to be a very close descendant of the archdragons, so much so that he was immortal as well. Managed to fight off the abyss for the entirety of the Dark Souls trilogy which is no small feat. His name doesn't have the prestige but the weight of fighting the abyss for that long is just bonkers
A little tip of lore from japanese: Most likely, when the Firstborn was exiled from Anor Londo, Gwyn was already a burning coal for the First Flame. The Miracle at Gwyn's Grave is the Firstborn's parting gift to the father he loved, and that's why he's also called the Nameless KING, because after his father "death", he was the King of Anor Londo and Gods. Perhaps out of his love of dragons, Gwyndolin exiled him and created the illusion we all love.
Glad to see the Japanese version backs that up as well. As I briefly showed in the video, the English items point to that conclusion as well, although maybe not as clearly as the Japanese text. Thanks!
Yes, Gwyn did not banish the Nameless King, Gwyndolin did. The Nameless King left a bouquet of flowers on his father's tomb. I kinda like that aspect. He had a strong relationship with his father to the end despite their radically different views, and when his insolent little brother chose to be a dick about it, he could've taken over Anor Londo easily, but didn't. Instead he chose to be the bigger person and just retreated to watch over the dragons he loved. The God of War truly wanted nothing more than peace. Beautiful.
Hey thanks! I absolutely did not expect anyone to notice the efficiency of my script lol but it was definitely something I tried focusing on when writing it, so I'm glad to hear it came through!
Fromsoft takes inspiration from norse mythology, rykard, Er's story being similar to norse mythology. Sif is Thor's wife and the name of the wolf in ds1, and since Nameless King is a God of war, that means the nameless king's name is Gwyntyr
It seems like the Nameless King ended up beholden to the flame anyway. The Catherdral Knights in the Church of the Deep use great shields which were used by the old Knights of Lothric. On it is an image of a bird. It is said the bird is a symbol of an OLD king of Lothric. The Nameless King rides on a bird-like stormdrake. His helm is bristling with Ash - and Lothric has a tradition of linking the fire. I think The Nameless King either decided to or was made to link the fire somehow.
That's interesting. I do think the ash mentioned in his crown is referring to the color of his hair rather than literal ash though. The translations of the Japanese description of this item I've seen seem to point that way. I can't say I'm convinced that shield is referring to the NK but taking a closer look at it, it seems like that bird on the shield may be caged? I wonder if it's related to a different Lothric mystery
Well damn, i've never reflected on this guy. But, after this video, I agree with you. You also made me realized there's no dark on archdragon peak. Great video, really.
Good video, stumbled upon it by accident. Glad I did! Keep it going, I like your way of narrating. Reminds me of Yakuza, all serious and then comedy all over with those snarky jokes.
He is a hypocrite‼️ accepting someone from the enemy team and making them your ally but when your son does it, it’s the most vile, treacherous, devious diabolical thing you have witnessed in your entire life😂😂😂
That one is pretty tough for me to buy into. True, "King" is a pretty vague title that can be passed, but then there's 'heir of lightning', 'deific hunter of dragons', 'former king and wargod' from item descriptions that are a bit more specific. I think the Soul of the Nameless King really puts it of reach for me: "The Nameless King was once a dragon-slaying god of war, before he sacrificed everything to ally himself with the ancient dragons."
Pretty sure the bell was there just for the sole purpose of challenging the Nameless King. He's a war god and would have loved that sort of thing. So it depends. If we think the Ashen One had some idea of what would happen when they rang the bell, it was to test their mettle and get stronger by taking the Nameless King's soul. If we think they had no idea what was going on but were just curious, then it was just to survive the fight they stumbled into.
Same reason we fight half the bosses in the games.....its fun in a video game. A large portion of bosses aren't neccessary to progress and killing them doesn't have any affect on the story outcome or the world

Those names sound great!
Honestly though, it should have "Gwyn" in the name... Probably Faraam was Gwynfaraam, and to be honest it sounds cool
Gwynfaraam works really well actually! Makes me think he just ditched the "Gwyn" part to lose the association to his old life
Well, the most logical name would something like Gwynson, but my headcanon is Lightning McGwyn.
Lmao! I love that. I'm probably calling his mount Mater from now on
I once heard a theory that his name was Sen because of Sen's Fortress and the Man-Serpents there.
Considering how time works, us killing the nameless king likely didn’t even necessarily kill him

Gael is literally the Dark Soul itself though. Doesn't get stronger than that.

Gael is probably just as old, or older then Nameless King
@@Frescko Similarly old if not older, yes. He fought Gwyn's wars, as did Faraam (Nameless King), so they would be around the same age.
