One of Matt’s last theories was how there’s no good role models in media anymore or that they’re being erased/mocked. It was good seeing miles confide in a father figure who’s actually his father. It’s hard enough finding good father figures let alone good fathers and this short just lets a dad be a dad. So good
What about Shazam's dad, C.C Batson? Sure, he's dead, but he was a great guy, nice, considerate, perhaps a bit naive but still willing to fight for his family and sacrifice himself, and gave Billy a huge Mansion post-mortem.
I deal with anxiety, and I've dealt with panic attacks on a semi-regular basis. Therapy has helped so much with giving me the tools to manage my anxiety. This short really connected with me because of this, and this episode did a great job exploring that territory. I hope, if anyone watches this video and it resonates with them, that it helps them realize they're not alone, and that they can overcome anxiety. It's a lot of work, and I personally still have road ahead of me, but it's a lot more manageable already. Thanks for shining a spotlight on this issue.
Fun fact: In the comics, Peter Parker's Spider-Man talks to a therapist, and his problems are so great, they sent his therapist to therapy! That's why there's a Spider-Therapist, cuz only a Spider-Person can understand and handle all that
I always took them recognizing someone else's spider-sense in the movie as like crossing frequencies of a radio, which is why when Miles meets his Peter, it looks like they get a bit of a headache, the interference of two strong reaction signals pushing against each other.
From a psych and mental health nerd: A++ intro to anxiety disorders, panic attacks and CBT! Calling out the disclaimer about panic attacks not being inherently fatal before going into theory mode was so necessary and so well done, especially proud to be a Theorist today. Thanks, Lee!
This video and specifically the part when heart damage and potential fatal consequences of panic attacks were mentioned were terribly triggering for me. This needs a content warning, or at least having the disclaimer before mentioning the possibility of death because of panic attacks.
This reminds me of that one episode from the Teen titans(the original, not TTGO) animated series where Robin was fighting Slade but he is literally the only one who sees Slade. None of his friends could see Slade. When Robin finally calm down with the help of his friends. "Slade" finally vanishes. There was no Slade to begin with. It was all in his mind. Hallucinations due to mental stress and PTSD. The episode ended with Robin turning off the lights to double check if Slade is still there. There was no Slade at all. That was a very dark episode for me when I was a kid. Back then, I didnt even know what mental health is and how realistic that experience is irl.
yeah I remember this episode, it was very stressfull seeing this from Robin perspective, not really knowing what was true or not. it was also interesting to see that while being superheroes they could also be very vulnerable and have trauma from all the dangerous situations they faced.
I haven't seen all of the original Teen Titans but I did see most of the episodes with Slade and that episode as well on TV one time. And yeah, that episode had quite an impact. I remember Raven, I believe, looking through Robin's eyes to reassure him there was no Slade and then she could see him and they realized that Slade was real to Robin and he needed their help.
Umm... are you forgetting the part at the end where they found traces of a unidentified powder/drug on the inside of the Slade mask Robin had been examining at the start of the episode? Yes, there are some parallels, but Robin was DRUGGED. He was trained by Batman to have a hyper observant, detective based mindset. The hallucinogens pushed his overanalytical mind into paranoia, which made the hallucinations more real and created a self reinforcing feedback loop. Not only that, hallucination or not, Slade was 'real' enough that his attacks were able to knock Raven out of her psychic connection to Robin. Real enough that Raven even wavered on if Slade might really be in the Tower. It was only because Robin was willing to trust his teammates over his own observations that he listened to Raven and closed his eyes.
Something I would like to add, Miles in the comics had similar problems with anxiety to the point that his Spidersense would randomly go off without there being any threat or just not work at all, when it mattered. He did get help and actual therapy later on to help him deal with it. I can only recommend Ziglar's current run with Miles. It's really amazing and great for his character.
That's what an anxiety disorder is. The Brain chemistry triggering your fight or flight just "cuz something is happenning or going to happen so be ready now. Don't do something else, we won't be ready. Watch out!". The Mental triggers the physical, instead of the other way around. Here Mile's spidey sense is triggered by his own anxiety/panic attack and the spidey sense is just catching up and trigger approprietly but it can't because the Sensing Part of the mechanism was never actually trigger. skipping the important step for a healthy reaction.... Watching this episode had noticing I had been masking an anxiety episode for the past hour or so.... heh ^^"
These were the kind of theories that I was really scared of loosing when Mat left. The ones that start out talking about the media we all love and then, go into real world things and really help remind me and ground me in the world. That short made me cry when I first saw it. These depictions of these disorders are getting better, more accurate and are helping with acceptance and normalization of really difficult things. Thank you Lee, this was a wonderful video 😊
It's interesting to see how the Spider-Verse weaves in aspects of mental health alongside traditional superhero narratives. This in-depth interpretation is impressive. It drives home the fact that superheroes, despite their superpowers, also experience human emotions and struggle with problems like everyday people.
I believe that was kinda the point of superheroes like spiderman and many others who tend to get their powers via a science accident. They differ from more god like paragons like superheroes like superman I believe.
As someone who also suffers from a anxiety disorder, I felt really connected to Miles. I experience some of these symptoms often and it felt nice that the film theorists covered something that I, along with many others, struggle with. And the way they talked about anxiety disorders was really informative and understanding. This is probably one of my favorite theories now.
Was not expecting to end up crying about my anxiety when I hopped into this video a few days late. Thanks Lee, I’m not able to treat myself atm, but I didn’t know about this short, and seeing it played completely straight, hearing you talk about it as it is, very comforting, and helpful
I think the reason Insomniac Miles (IM) gets a pass while Sony Miles (SM) doesn't is because the spider that bit IM was from his universe, unlike the one that bit SM. In SM's universe, the blonde Peter was supposed to be the only Spider-Man in that world, while in the Insomniac-verse, there was meant to be both a Peter Parker and Miles Morales Spider-Man in that world. More than one Spider-Man can exist in a single universe (otherwise characters like Silk don't align with the canon), it's just that that wasn't meant to be the case in SM's universe.
That's an interesting take on it. Most likely the reason Miles world didn't glitch out because fate took away a Spider-Man so all would be alright in that universe 🤔
I think my favorite part of this video is how it shows how much thought and effort went into making the Spider Within short. It is such an accurate depiction of panic attacks in a visual way that is also on brand for the character, so it's excellently done.
I think it's also important to remember that this Short Film was made WITH the help of a Mental Health Organization of some kind. This film was made SPECIFICALLY to bring awareness of Mental Health Problems and be like "Hey, it's okay, even Superheroes go through this. Get some help like Miles did"
As someone with GAD aka Generalized Anxiety Disorder this video pointing out stuff about Anxiety Disorders is really meaningful the search into symptoms and panic attacks is really accurate. Thank you for this theory.
"YoU'rE aN aNoMaLy." Miles: Dude, you know what would happen if a person actually got bit by a radioactive spider? Radiation poisoning bruh, we're all anomalies.
@@oscarjrboniza657 I'd like to know why the theorist channels (and more others) don't just automatically block anybody with u followed by ttp in their name.
The spider Within really does a fantastic job showing anxiety in a realistic way,I understood the allegory immediately and related to it as someone with anxiety (generalized) Lee I appreciate you for bringing attention to anxiety disorders and the team for researching seriously,I learned some new things myself
it really does, i love it so much for doing that. i should probably watch the spider within again, cause the first time i did i couldnt focus at all. (also coming from someone with anxiety)
And the paralysis stuff too. I don’t have sleep paralysis, but I have a similar condition caused by the same cross wiring in the brain, it just triggers from a different situation (strong emotion- specifically laughter) and being able to barely move your fingers is pretty accurate for a temporary paralysis.
my sleep paralysis demon occasionally appears when im falling asleep, he is always out of sight because he makes it sound like he opens my door and stares at me from the side of my bed that i cant see, and i named him Frank
Never thought of naming it (!!!). I have lost it, because to get out of sleep paralysis, recognizing the situation and forcing several deep breathing helped me to wake the body up. Good luck with your sleep buddy.
8:31 As a person with sleep paralysis, I can ABSOLUTELY confirm that Miles is suffering from sleep paralysis demons. My demons usually get close and touch me, and I can’t do a thing about it. The scary thing about it is that it feels real, it feels like there’s actually somebody there with me.
@@dinathseyara325I’ve only been on sleep paralysis twice, but I’m gonna try to explain what it’s actually like: Unlike when you’re dreaming or having nightmares, sleep paralysis makes you f e e l everything as if you’re actually going through it, sensations, touches even pain sometimes, remember it’s a phase when you’re in a state where you’re conscious that you’re not dreaming and you know you can’t move, I don’t have a demon, but on one of those experiences I was dreaming when suddenly I slightly opened my eyes, I started getting hit by loads of water and because I couldn’t move, I started drowning, maybe not literally in real life but what did happen is that I was choking so much ( irl) i thought I was actually dying but out of nowhere I could move and immediately jumped out of my bed supposedly struggling to get air……., that does not happen in dreams my bud.
@@dinathseyara325I don’t get sleep paralysis anymore but I used to experience them a lot and it feels more real than a dream. It’s like straight up hallucinations. You physically feel things happening during sleep paralysis and if your eyes are open you might see visual hallucinations. And I know dreams can sometimes feel very real but those dreams never feel as real as our waking state but sleep paralysis does. Hope this answers your question :)
I think that there is a lot of hope for Miles, especially because at the end of ATSV we saw that he is finally willing to confide in his parents that he is Spider-man. Even if it's still a secret to everyone else in his life and even though the constant danger he's in will always be large sources of stress, being able to finally be honest with them would definately ease some his anxiety because he no longer has to lie to them all the time.
This short film really sheds light on what having an Anxiety disorder and, more specifically, when having a panic attack is really like, speaking from experience daily. It also shows what one can do to help remedy and manage through, even though to most, it may seem like the worst idea to ask for help, again speaking from experience. Really great theory!
-Anxiety is not a mood disorder, it's an anxiety disorder, like Panic Disorder (disordered panic attacks). The mood disorders are Bipolar and its variants, and Depression and its variants. -Sleep Paralysis would occur near the end of the night, not immediately, as REM sleep occurs at the end of a sleep cycle, which we go through 4-8 sleep cycles a night. The amount of REM sleep in each cycle increases until morning where it is at its greatest amount.

I'll be honest, I think this is by far the best episode that Film Theory has had in a long, LONG time. No stretches of the imagination or having to look into small tidbits to make the theory stick, no conveniently ignoring basic facts about the series, no haphazard guessing of what maybe-sorta-kinda-could be, and not a case of "this is so obvious to even casual fans so why are you covering it?" kind of thing. A great straightforward but thoughtful analysis of something film related to produce a theory, make connections to that theory, and tie it up into a great message and learning opportunity. Fantastic video.
I LOVEd the voice for Jeff, it was so kind when asking what was wrong to Miles. I have a thing for healthy parents and it touched my heart to see Miles being comfortable enough to ask his dad, and him being so understanding to take a walk at night with him. I am nothing but happy to have this exist.
Yes, the reason Spider-verse Miles is an anomaly is because he was bit by a Spider from a different dimension. We know that you don't have to be Peter to be Spider-Man so that wouldn't effect every single Miles, and there are a handful of Mile Morales in Canon dimensions in the overall Marvel lore.
Hey man just wanted to say you really spoke to me because I've been struggling with alot of spiritual anxiety and not knowing how to handle the sudden fear attacks or the sudden unease and I'm working through it but just hearing you talk about it how to treat it letting us know we aren't alone in this (obviously we have Christ through everything but still) it really helped me calm down so thanks man I appreciate it
Experienced this a few times and it’s one of the most horrific experiences I’ve had. Unable to breathe, unable to move, wanting to call out for help, but can’t get anything out. When it finally ended and I was able to move, breathe, and talk again, I was terrified to fall asleep again.
I attended once a workshop about how to control panic attacks, and the instructor mentioned about the misconception that "it feels like a hearth attack". The truth is that a panic attacks feels how we THINK a heart attack feels, but in reality a hearth attack is very different, the heart is not beating very rapidly in a hearth attack, it's exactly the opposite. Btw, the a rapid heart rate for a very small time is not damaging to the body, that's exactly what cardiovascular excersize does :), the issue is a rapid heart rate during all the day. EDIT: just in case a clarification is needed: anxiety is not a good for health, even when panic attacks are sporadic, chronic stress is pretty bad for other reasons than the hearth beating rapidely for small periods (things like sleep deprivation and high levels of cortisol causes multiple health issues).
As someone with diagnosed GAD, and whose favorite movies are the Spider-Verse films, watching this short made me cry. I've only had full panic attacks a few times in my life, but that's exactly how it felt. And though I've never had sleep paralysis hallucinations, those sorts of "shadowy, evil, broken versions of myself" are frequent images in my mind. For awhile after I got diagnosed, I sometimes called my anxiety Freddy, after Freddy Krueger, since it feels like a different person who's only inside my mind and trying to hurt me. Most of the time, my anxiety doesn't lead to full panic attacks. Instead, I just shut down, zone out, and am unable to do anything, sometimes barely aware of my surroundings. I guess that's technically a form of dissociative panic attack, but it feels quite different. Regardless, I'm rambling now 😅 The point is I cried watching the short, and I cried watching this analysis of it 😅
I love seeing Anxiety starting to be shown in mainstream media. I always felt alone in my fight, especially when adults would downplay it when I needed help, but with things like this it will help kids feel like they fit in and adults will see it as the problem it is
I have regular panic attacks, They are horrific. currently recovering from a mental health crisis. Trippy things from your deepest nightmares do happen, And it sucks that I have to bother my friends at 2 AM. But if this is happening to you bother your friends at 2 AM, they are willing to be bothered, In fact, they encourage you to wake them up in the middle of the night with a frantic phone call.
Thank you for making this video. I have an anxiety disorder (OCD) and experience fairly regular panic attacks, so I'm glad to see Sony and Theorist raising awareness. It could help a lot of people. I've been in therapy for years and it has helped tremendously. I've also found that just learning to recognize a panic attack for what it is in the moment really makes them a lot more bearable. Then, I'm still tense, but I'm not catastrophizing and causing it to become any more severe or last longer than it needs to.
I've suffered from anxiety attacks and panic attacks since I was 8. I've had a lot of stressed upon me since a young age and I never rlly liked to look for help making myself a little alone. I'm 15 now and seeing content like this which in a way helps me is so wholesome and good for me. I have no way to express how happy I am that ppl talk abt this topic. (English isn't my first language sorry if I can't rlly explain)
I had a huge panic attack a year ago followed by much smaller ones, but the first was out of nowhere and it was the most scary thing I've ever lived thru; I was literally talking and playing with a board game with my friends when I suddenly had all the symptoms that they mentioned on the episode, specially the whole body tingle. I did as best as I could to stay calm and relax but it was impossible, my mind was struggling to focus on anything but "staying alive", I felt my breathing starting to shorten until I gave in and went to the hospital a few minutes later without anyone knowing. The doctors after calming me and relaxing me with both medicine and chat, just ruled out I had a panic attack with no real evident cause so I had to go to a psychiatrist to check me and actually rule out something, I ended going and not really sorting what really caused it, it seemed to be a mix of a bad sleep schedule and lack of exercise (After coming back from a month-long trip that made me walk about 20k steps a day, it seemed my mind made me think I had stored excess energy that I wasn't burning it made me feel like I needed to release it, apparently) made both me and my body crash down hard when the stress built up, luckily I tackled it as early as I could and nothing bad came out and it took me some months to fully recover from it. In the end this episode was almost word-by-word what happened to me, to the point it was a bit funny to see my experience being described in this episode and made me want to write this comment, just to share all of this, hopefully this also helps someone or gives a better perspective on what the episode was about!
6:57 As someone who did have a panic attack I totally agree with this it is terrifying you will feel weak, insignificant, and afraid, but you can get through it

From what I remember Miles has the most sensitive spider sense ever so I believe that it amplifies his awareness to a point of anxiety where when the spider sense feels something unknown due to anxiety it miss fires as a threat. Which makes his anxiety worse in a vicious cycle
Nice vid anyways Here's a recipe for a decadent chocolate layer cake: Ingredients: For the cake: - 2 cups all-purpose flour - 1 and 3/4 cups granulated sugar - 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder - 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder - 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking soda - 1 teaspoon salt - 2 large eggs, at room temperature - 1 cup whole milk - 1/2 cup vegetable oil - 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract - 1 cup boiling water For the frosting: - 1 cup unsalted butter, softened - 3 and 1/2 cups powdered sugar - 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder - 1/2 cup heavy cream - 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract - Pinch of salt Instructions: For the cake: 1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans, or line them with parchment paper. 2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. 3. Add the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients, and beat on medium speed until well combined. 4. Reduce the speed to low and carefully add the boiling water to the cake batter. Beat on high speed for about 1 minute to incorporate the hot water into the batter. 5. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans. 6. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean. 7. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely. For the frosting: 1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter on medium speed until creamy. 2. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with the heavy cream, until the frosting is smooth and creamy. 3. Beat in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt until well combined. Assembly: 1. Once the cakes have cooled completely, level the tops if necessary to create flat surfaces. 2. Place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand. Spread a layer of frosting evenly over the top. 3. Repeat with the remaining cake layers and frosting, stacking them on top of each other. 4. Use the remaining frosting to cover the top and sides of the cake, spreading it evenly with a spatula. 5. Decorate the cake as desired with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or fresh berries.
As someone with an anxiety disorder - who has also had experienced sleep paralysis, though thankfully hadn't had to deal with a sleep paralysis demon - dang, did I relate to this video. And given how much I love Spider-Man and Miles as a character, I really loved this video. I really felt seen with this one.
Panic attacks and anxiety disorder sucks horribly. I have it and its not fun. Its like flight or fight but without a cause, it can happen without a real reason to and god im so lucky to not have experienced any sleep paralysis. I have some sometimes but have found a way to break out of it funny enough.
Miguel's mentality is self defetaist. A spider person should ALWAYS strive to save as many people as they can. Just like peter said in the egde of time
The death of the characters in Super Smash Bros. is noticed by everybody since the game makes a line of vibrant colors. In the Hunger Games the players know if another player has died by it being spoken at the end of the day.
I feel like the best plot twist would be Miles and the spider girl that send him into the wrong dimension (don't remember her name) confront Miguel about it, saying that "Miles was never an anomaly; he exist into another one wich mean that this two dimension switched their futur, making it completely normal". It will then explain that the spot was created to be his enemy, like every Spider Man has his own. I love this theory/scenario so much!
Having lived with it for my entire life, anxiety isn't fun, but there are ways of dealing with it in a healthy environment, with people that know how much it tears and rips at you. There are other ways, and people are out there who can and will listen because they know what it's like.
For anyone worried about the thumbnail art being AI, the thumbnail artist confirmed that it isn't and they have proof showcasing their psd file. We can rest easy
I have a really good film theory idea: Hotel Transylvania Martha (Count Dracula’s wife) was a human, for good reason. Vampires don’t die from fire or heavy things collapsing on them
tip : i feel like a lot of the theories now are about relating stuff to real life but actually having theories about stuff in the media would be nice too
Theory idea. Four way hunger games crossover. Game theory is which smash bros character lives/wins hunger games. Film theory could be anything, maybe something about could the capitol survive without districts(like in mockingjay), or maybe something about thirteen. Food theory could be are the capitols mutts edible. Style theory would be which capitol persons outfits are the most practical, or how much does it cost to look like a capitol person.
Spiderverse legitimately might go down as one of the greatest film trilogies ever if it sticks the landing. I can’t get enough of Miles and this story.
Thanks Lee. I feel so validated. I have insane anxiety and have struggled with it for so long. I really hope I have a good enough hold on it now that it doesn't affect my heart.
[Update: Ignore the spambots that are replying to this post, they can't do anything but be useless humans, replying to them lets them continue harassing] If this is the direction they are going then the anomaly part is the fact Miles does have someone to talk with, his parents, for the rest of them, they lost the one person closest to them that they could talk with the one they trusted most died due to their fear. Miles still has the ones he trusts, as great as it would be to have the other spiders to talk with they can only really give their solution which would differ based on what their home dimension is like, like even the Therapist Spiderman was just done with hearing the same story day after day and giving the same answer, even the other Miles Spiders they discovered their own way of coping thats not gonna be the same for Miles.
CBT isn't a cure, its a bandaid. when used on it's own it has a high relapse rate. However in conjunction with other therapies it does give the individual a temporary boost, allowing them to seek changes to their life that can lead to a positive long term outcome. This is not guaranteed as external factors that caused the anxiety disorder often reasert themselves when therapies are concluded.
This genuinely reminds me one time i got sleep paralysis except i didnt see any shadow beings i hear screams, like girl screams high pitched, im in a dorm room with 16 other people in it so i tried my best to grab the person next to me for comfort, when the screaming stopped i turns out i havent moved an inch, is it like an alternative of shadowy figures? Like screams that night freaks me out
I had a nightmare where my parents were screaming my name but I can't move and open my eyes. It was really scary because I thought somebody broke into our house.
I used to get them all the time as kindergarten or elementary school students. I got used to it somewhat although it really doesn't feel fun at all. I know I was having sleep paralysis, and yet I couldn't do anything about it except wait it out.

This is such a great short. Anxiety disorders are so often parts of your brain treating the basic stress you feel-like schoolwork, crushes, family stuff, jobs, etc.-like a hungry panther stalking you through the forest; you're stressed out, so the ancient lizard brain reacts as if you're being hunted. It makes so much sense that, once in this state, Miles spider-sense would go haywire. It's reacting to "danger," but in this case, there isn't actually anything there. It's just the thoughts in his head. That would be so overwhelming, jacking up his anxiety to, dare we say, super human levels!
One of Matt’s last theories was how there’s no good role models in media anymore or that they’re being erased/mocked. It was good seeing miles confide in a father figure who’s actually his father. When Robin finally calm down with the help of his friends. "Slade" finally vanishes. There was no Slade to begin with. It was all in his mind. Hallucinations due to mental stress and PTSD.

Oh yeah, that was a great episode.
@@GaurdianPrime Dude, you literally just described what an anxiety disorder does to the brain.

Bro got bot barraged
That's an interesting take on it. Most likely the reason Miles world didn't glitch out because fate took away a Spider-Man so all would be alright in that universe 🤔

Great pfp
It seems like he is suffering from a form of schizophrenia. Seeing things that aren't really there. I have schizophrenia.

Miles was having sleep paralysis
And the paralysis stuff too. Don’t care about the bots
Go for a run, even if you hate running. The anxiety goes away completely.
@SkibiditoiIetyesyes_UTTPyou have one video

And the fact they are in different multiverse should help.

This short film beautifully captures the struggles of anxiety and panic attacks in a visually stunning way. It's incredibly relatable and well done.

Nice vid anyways Here's a recipe for a decadent chocolate layer cake:
Ingredients:
For the cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 and 3/4 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs, at room temperature
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
For the frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 and 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Instructions:
For the cake:
For the frosting:
Assembly:
Legit recipe! Thanks

If this is the direction they are going then the anomaly part is the fact Miles does have someone to talk with, his parents, for the rest of them, they lost the one person closest to them that they could talk with the one they trusted most died due to their fear.

Yooo! You’re doing great!
