    I got to try the Glyph at The Big House this past weekend and got to have a few conversations with one of the engineers of the project. I've been playing on a rectangle style controller for Melee, Ultimate, Street Fighter, and Guilty Gear since the R1 B0XX came out. This is the best version of the rectangle that I have seen yet. It has an impressively premium feel and the possibilities for customization from the LEDs, to the ease of changing both artwork and layouts (I saw the engineer change to a different set in just 2 minutes!), to the expansion bay and possible retro cables are endless and are very exciting. I also think that the full set is absolutely the way to go. I was worried when I first saw the Glyph that I would lose my hand placement immediately but I played for a bit and it felt natural the entire time coming from a standard rectangle. The people behind the project seem incredibly passionate and competent too. I really can't recommend backing the project enough and I'm looking forward to getting my hands on one of my own!

    Bob you GOTTA give it up on the "fightpad" dealio, that ALREADY has a meaning in fighting games. A fightpad is a handheld controller, like an Xbone controller, and usually will have six buttons on the face of it to easily support Street Fighter. Look up the "Hori Octa" for an example of what that is. We call controllers like a DS4 "Pads"
    All Button Controllers, or stickless, or leverless, or rectangle to refer to things like a Hitbox, Smash Box, Frame1, or WASD box or what's in this video.
    Adore the video, love your work, JUST SAYIN' yur crossing the streams for people not in the know.

      Honestly, the only reason I don't use these types of controllers outside of being a broke bitch is that the buttons have more space between them than what I'm used to with a keyboard. That being said, I like how they angle the layouts, and it'd be interesting to combine that keybox shit with this concept.

      I mean no, it's definitely more comfortable and intuitive to play games like that with a gamepad until you've transcended to a certain level of nerdiness about games with years of experience that you veer towards things like speedrunning or getting seriously good at fighting games where the sheer accuracy and immediacy of these kinds of pads will be worth it to learn and get used to. And then, maybe, yeah, after MORE years of mastering them it might feel more comfortable than a controller depending on the kind of person you are. But for most people, for most levels of play, for platformers and such, a game pad is absolutely going to feel way more comfortable and intuitive

  • @SoundToxin
    @SoundToxin ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think some other people already said this, but FYI, "pads" in the fighting game community refer to "normal" controllers, like a dualshock4. I don't know the etymology for sure, but I assume it's because these controllers had a dpad instead of an arcade stick, differentiating the two controller types you'd use in classic 2D fighting games. I would also recommend saying "arcade controller" or "arcade stick" instead of "fight stick" because these are used for more than just fighting games. It also makes it less confusing when you change half the name for the stick-less ones. You used a few terms in this video like leverless and all-button (I also hear all-digital sometimes) which are fine of course. These things have a *lot* of names and it's hard to say which ones will stick in the long-term. In the Smash community people also call them "rectangles" sometimes. Other names I would avoid are "hitbox" (because it's a specific brand/controller) and "box controller" (because it sounds like the B0XX which is again a specific branded controller).
    I had a soft spot for the "rectangle" name, but it's admittedly confusingly generic, so I've been trending more toward saying "leverless arcade controller" recently. It's also pretty safe to just refer to your actual specific controller by its name, like Flatbox, Frame1, LBX or whatever else.

      The advantage to leverless arcade controllers is that you can lay out the buttons in a more ergonomic shape. You can also have them pretend to be a controller (xbox 360, gamecube, etc.), and operate at different voltages (e.g. 3.3V and 5V) for more console compatibility.

    The modified 8bitdo fightstick you got isn't called a fightpad, fightpads are actually just your normal controller but with 6 face buttons. A fightstick that uses WASD is simply called a mixbox.

    • @BronzeAgePepper
      @BronzeAgePepper ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "Mixbox" is really a brand name like Hitbox (the biggest name in leverless arcade controllers). I guess the WASD config is still really niche and so doesn't have any other convenient shorthand. There's so many configs that it's only natural that terms like "fightpad" and "fightstick" get applied to controller configs that are similar but not the same as what is actually being referred to. (I'm big on fightsticks for fighting games, but I also love fightpads like the Hori Fighting Commander for 2D platform games.)

At all. It's the SAME as a stick! It just ...takes me a lot longer to do everything on a stick as quickly or as consistently as I do it on the Hitbox! That's all! It's NOT unfair, and a simple a coincidence that a more complicated and expensive to produce controller costs $50-250 less than the new Hitboxes. That's speculation!

      These leverless arcade controllers also work great for platformers and puzzle games (tetris, panel de pon). Depending on what the game you're playing needs, any of the controllers built with Smash in mind can probably already do a lot, since they already have buttons for both analog sticks out of the box. You use a modifier button to change between run/walk (how far the emulated stick is pushed). It may sound limiting, but really you don't need every granular bit of motion of an analog stick for most games. You can play something like Super Mario Sunshine with a Frame1 pretty well.

    • @retroRanger64
      @retroRanger64 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah agreed, I actually used leverlless controllers to play beat'em ups. But still prefer the approach being done with the sworl--like the idea of analog stick like controls + arcade style buttons. Just think it opens up more possibilities for game genres.

      The Smash layout in the HayBox firmware has left and right sticks mapped, dpad is accessible with a modifier + right stick buttons. So if you need both sticks and the dpad all at once it might not quite do what you want. If you only occasionally need the dpad, like for a taunt in Smash, it should be doable. For anything where you want to use the dpad for basic movement (2d fighters, platformers, etc.) you'd probably want to hop over to the FGC layout, where the dpad replaces the left stick, and analog sticks are not accessible.

    I know it works for PC, but could you try it on the Steam Deck? I wonder if it would just WORK? Seems like a "no-brainer" for building a custom arcade cabinet type setup!

      steam deck is just a steam machine, if steam can use the controller then steam deck can.

      @@MendedPearl Yes, but generally when people say "PC" they mean Windows and some devices don't have Linux support. I just want to verify compatibility with Steam OS before I consider. ^_^

      It will definitely work with the Steam Deck. It's running a modified version of the HayBox firmware and using a Pi Pico microcontroller (according to Crane). I have an Open-Frame1 controller which is also Pico-based and running HayBox and it works on my docked Deck. There used to be a bug with the dpad not working, but it was fixed in an update in the last couple months and it all works great now. You may have some issues navigating menus in Melee mode because it's not "pushing" the "stick" as far, but in Ultimate, Rivals, or Project M modes it works fine, and if you use the dpad it also works fine.

      @@SoundToxin Love to hear it! Well, I think I might start considering it! I've been debating on getting a second Steam Deck and doing something like what Wulff did a while back for a while. Just need money.. XD

    How can you play smash without the UP buttons ? Alot of imputs requires UP. These controller looks cool, but they are not for me, to me playing a platformer on a keyboard is the least comfortable position to be IMO. Cool designs nonetheless.

    1:50 Happy to see a cameo appearance from the 8BitDo Retro Keyboard. Best typing experience I've ever had.
    I'll stick with the GameCube controller for Smash. I get the appeal of an all-button controller for it, but it just looks insanely complex to me. I am interested in a regular Hit Box controller, though. I just wish Hit Box would stop dragging their feet on native PS5 compatibility.
