    I love this game. I was born in 77, and loved the Wonderboy games growing up. Played Wonderboy in Monster Land in the arcades in the 80s. Read about Wonderboy 3 for Master System in the 80s, salivated, and played on emulator in 2002.
    The Genesis game III is better than IV. Wonderboy in MonsterWorld might be the best. These games all have amazingly good music too. They are very Japanese.

      👍 I was born in the year 1980 and I can relate to your passion for a video game. Although I didn't grew up playing the wonderboy series of games, I did enjoyed a game called Little Nemo for the nes and this game remind me of that play style. I am now 40 years old and I am feeling goosebumps playing this game with the little nemo like vibes.🤗

    I didn't know about this series until I got a PC Engine in 2009 or so. Confusing naming conventions aside I instantly fell in love with it. The exploration definitely doesn't go as far as as most MetroidVania-style games but that made it approachable for a newcomer to the genre and it makes the games easier to pick up casually. The audio and visual styles of the series definitely gives it a charm that can do a lot of heavy lifting for people used to deeper exploration and more challenging combat.

    The fact that it’s difficult at the beginning is thematically fitting and additionally creates an arch of delayed gratification when one accumulates the other transformations which is also thematically fitting. Therefore early difficulty should not be regarded as a negative.

    • @nealronaghan6183
      @nealronaghan6183 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I get that, but the array of frustrating difficulty spikes weren't rewarding or gratifying to clear. I'm cool with games being challenging, but the challenge in these spots weren't fun to me. So that's a negative to me in a game that I otherwise really dig.

      Neal Ronaghan I’ll apologize to the extent that my comment is in actuality a question to you rather than an accusation. Moreover I also haven’t played the game whereas you have.
      I’ll reiterate the question nevertheless. Let’s say the early sections are in fact poorly designed in and of themselves, but in relation to the rest of the game, isn’t the tension they create conducive to a greater feeling of resolve that otherwise wouldn’t exist if these debated sections were smoothed out?.
      I should note that I’m bad at games and for my purposes , many of these troublesome games don’t merit the input required too see the output, and that can be the other side of it.

      @nealronaghan6183 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NintendoDeepDiver I got what you meant initially - no worries. That tension is clearly what they're aiming for with that intro (and they also return to that kind of thing a few times in the game, though never to that same level). I just contend that those moments are veer too close to frustrating. It might click for other people, but it very much didn't for me. Glad I got through those irritating parts because the highs are high in this game.

      Ittyboi well....becoming a pig is a curse, and a roadblock to the character of the game; the fact that the limited player verb set as well as the pesky level design in this section of the game, make the dire straits of the character manifest in the player’s reality reinforces that theme of becoming helpless or hitting rock bottom . As the game gets easier with the following transformations it is reinforcing the theme of overcoming adversity. So in my mind the symmetry of the story and gameplay strengthen the present themes.

    • @NintendoDeepDiver
      @NintendoDeepDiver 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neal Ronaghan Maybe you acknowledged this in the review, but in your mind is the nitty gritty level design of this game superior to that of Dragons trap? I might go as far to say I love that game but more for its macro designs than its minute to minute game design.

    Hey dude! This is a really great review. Your writing hits on all the points that a viewer like me wants to hear about, and you move from topic to topic smoothly. You might want to look a little closer at your audio mixing next time, though. Once the music started to kick in, it was a bit too loud and ended up conflicting with your narration. What's more, it's clear that sound is full game audio (including sound effects), but it isn't synced with the gameplay on screen, which can be distracting. I think using the music is a good choice and that you picked a great track(s) to use for your review. But it may be beneficial to not use your captured game audio, unless it is synced with your on-screen gameplay, and opt for just the music itself.
    Again, awesome stuff! Thanks for the work you put into it!

    Only time I died in the entire game is early on when you first become the pig and the clouds fire drop patern suddenly changes and the fire follows you and reverse your control when it hits you...and it is hard to see when the effect is ending and you 100% end up running into another fire. Only super hard part. Impossible to predict as well. Overall, a pleasanting surprisingly fun game with beautiful graphics. Story is a little cheesy but whateve.

    Does it use any music tracks from Wonder Boy Monster World? I feel too much music gets reused from Dragons Trap when World has just as good music. Regardless, I still have the game preordered and have been waiting for years! Can't wait!

      @@sinteleon It does use music from Dragon's Trap and Pepelogoo from Monster World 4 is in the game so I don't se why they wouldn't be able to get the rights to at least a couple of tracks from Monster World. Well, unless the rights to that game is owned by a completely different company despite being part of the same series that is. Copyright can be weird sometimes.

      I'm not as bothered by the price as the fact it didn't get a physical release in Australia (and Europe I assume). I've decided I'd rather pay 60 aud for this game than full price for the re release of nsmbu (just as a comparison). I'm not a cheapskate by any means but sometimes us Aussies draw the short end of the stick esp when it comes to smaller ns releases. I know I can always import but I shouldn't have to.

      The same company want's almost 50 AU for Toki which is a 25 minute arcade game with re done graphics (identical game to more than 2 decades ago). I just find them too greedy. I love supporting devs but i have my limits on what I think is decently priced, fair, too cheap! or just a ripoff which is how I feel about almost everything dotemu.@@woobla500

    I really like the 2-d adventure genre and this fell under my unexpected watch. I need some conformation for what I enjoy out of the genre.
    Does it have any sort of feel of rewarding skilled gameplay? From what I've seen from trailers, the obstacles looked structure, it just bothers me when tools rewarded during progression are limited to specific puzzle solving as opposed to getting creative.

    I bought this cuz it was on sale, and not knowing a dam thing about it.... SO GLAD I MADE THE PURCHASE! Super fun game
    EDIT: beware...
    I just got to the volcano section of the game, and it is 10 times harder than the rest of the game thus far! Not exaggerating! Up until the volcano, most children could progress with little problems. Then its like some else took over and designed the volcano! UNREAL!
    why unbalance the game like that???
    HUGE flaw in the game!
    Otherwise its still a fun and unique game

    I think this game is terrible and one of the worst so called "Metroidvania" games I've played. It's horrible and cumbersome to play. The game just doesn't flow, you're constantly changing characters and abilities all the time . All the way through I feel like I'm spozing my way through boring puzzle sections only to think (that fuck for that I never want to do this again). It's just not fun at all. If you want a decent metroidvania get Hollow Knight, Guacamelee one or two, Ori and the blind forest or even try Chasm. I'm just thankful I got this on sale on the PS store for £13 didn't get mugged off by paying the absurd price of £32

      @@arsenewenger30 I just had more aggravation with it than actual fun. I realize that I am in the minority on this one. After I beat the dung defender I had a ton of money but kept dying in the same spot trying to get my money back. That was what finally made me quit. I could make a big list of the things that frustrated me but I don't feel like it. I have beaten about 20 different metroidvania style games and that was the only one that I didn't finish. I really wanted to like it but I just didn't.
