This game is awesome. I took a chance because of the beautiful hand drawn cartoon look and so glad I bought it. The side scrolling puzzle solving and action are amazing. Love how he can transform into different characters with unique abilities.
I've been a fan of the Wonder Boy series since the late 80s. I am happy it's made a come back, and I'm also happy that gamers today appreciate its recent sequel. The developers and the Westone remnants deserve credit.
Got this digital the other day, instantly ordered Wonder Boy and saving up for this for the switch in physical form. It's going for around $70-120 new. Needless to say i'll be paying close attention to Limited Run Games from here on out lol.
I didn't know about this series until I got a PC Engine in 2009 or so. Confusing naming conventions aside I instantly fell in love with it. The exploration definitely doesn't go as far as as most MetroidVania-style games but that made it approachable for a newcomer to the genre and it makes the games easier to pick up casually. The audio and visual styles of the series definitely gives it a charm that can do a lot of heavy lifting for people used to deeper exploration and more challenging combat.
Amazing game! Played it on PS5 lately. Everything about this game is awesome. Story, music, graphics, puzzles, RPG elements, platforming. Charming, funny, light-hearted. I couldn't recommend it enough!
nice test , but you forget michiru yamane ( the composer of " castlevania symphony of the night " and all castlevania on gba, ds , ps2... ) in your review of this wonderful game...
Hope you love it as much as I did! No plans right now since I hadn't heard anyone ask about it until now. Currently plans are Just Cause 4, Smash Brothers, and Gris. If anything else is coming out in the future lmk know ahead of time so I can plan to cover it :)
Its certainly no masterpiece like, say, Hollow Knight, but its pretty good. About a third through the game I regretted not taking notes b/c there were many incredibly frustrating moments that didnt have to do with difficulty. Things like getting dropped onto an enemy on a screen change, the terrible snake controls. Then there were the 3 times it just crashed on my Switch(including after the final blow on Xaros..... AAAAAAAAGGGHHH!!!). And its not perfect besides that either. In the Volcano riding some fire snakes, I didnt have bombs so I had to backtrack through several difficult platforming sections, teleport out, buy some bombs, then do those sections for a 3rd time to get back. There was a monster right there too but for some reason he never dropped bombs when I killed him. Just a ton of small insanely frustrating details that really held this game back for me which sucked since Metroidvania is my fav genre and theres a big gorgeous map to explore. I'd give it a 7.5 or 8/10 but it shoulda been a 10/10 like Hollow Knight.
Half Genie Hero was the first, and so far only Shantae game I’ve played, and I thought it was really fun, but compared to Monster Boy, I think it feels a little unpolished. Not in the visuals, but in the game design. Where Monster Boy has a relatively small selection of animal transformations, each of which feel distinct and come with advantages and disadvantages, and can be transitioned to and from seamlessly, Shantae has way too many transformations than it knows what to do with, and many feel very gimmicky. From memory, I don’t think it’s even possible to do anything with the elephant other than push blocks, and the tree just spits out health items, and the crab is basically just a worse mermaid. Shantae also uses backtracking, but whereas in Monster Boy it’s mostly optional, I remember Shantae often sending me to places I’d already been to move the story along, something which becomes significantly more annoying when the world isn’t open, but rather split into set levels that have you traversing the entire area a second time. Lastly, the equipment in Monster Boy feels much more thought out than in Half Genie Hero. Monster Boy allows you to spend your money on armor and weapons, which grant special abilities on their own, have stats, and give you a set bonus when fully upgraded. Shantae allows you to buy magic attacks, extra transformations, stat increases and buffs, as well as trade in your current transformations to gain new transformations. It just feels a bit less focused, and more like the developers wanted to work in a bunch of extra abilities and bonuses that weren’t already tied to an existing animal transformation. Sorry for a mostly negative and long comment, but I just had a few thoughts on the two games that I wanted to express. I’m not hating on Shantae at all though, I really enjoyed playing it, and I’ve got the day one edition on Switch, but I just thought there were quite a few areas in which the design in Monster Boy felt a bit more thoughtful.
You’re pronunciation of those Japanese names sounded legit. About to finally get a Switch & I can’t wait to play this game. Subscribed because I like your voice 😁
It can take you anywhere from 15-23 hours depending on how much you spend buying items and searching for secret areas. I enjoyed it and would recommend at the current price.
Daaaaam, sucks this is $40 right now. I just spent so much over black friday. I wish I'd known this game was out, I hadn't heard about it but it reminds me of those classic SNES games I enjoyed so much. That music especially wonderful.
Looks like a great game. Many games like this dont have much exposure. I want to play Wonder Boy in Monster World from my Genesis collection before I play this. Looks a little bit like Shantae as well.
Great review! I really want to play this, but I feel like £34.99 is a bit too steep...I'll just wait for a sale before getting to experience it, I guess.
It’s different, this game is more linear and puzzle-oriented, Hollow Knight is much more about exploration (though Monster Boy still has plenty of that)
What a great and thorough review. I am enjoying this game on PS4. Wow the hand drawn graphics are amazing. I just subscribed to your channel.
Aw thank you! Welcome to the channel! :)

Most definitely, it's such a great game, hope it leads to a resurgence of more platformers like it
This is easily the best platformer on the Switch for me
Agree 100000000000%
@@TheRagingSun I meant in terms of 2d platformers
You need to play Hollow Knight.
One of the best. For me the best Metroidvania is Hollow Knight.
Better than Hollow Knight?
Very good review!
Thank you!

Definitely a good entry to the genre at the very least :)
What a great review! I just 100% this today. A masterpiece of a game for sure!
Amazing! Love games that focus on every little detail possible. How deep are the RPG elements like the items for each transformation?
They each offer buffs that take into account the environment. You can even upgrade them in shops too!
@@Luisgvn I shall buy it
Absolutely amazing game. It was a treat seeing all of the easter eggs and references to past games, especially once you 100% it.
Wow, how gorgeous is this game! And loving that joyful soundtrack
All kinds of wholesome vibes 😂
Oh snap! You got me at Saturday Morning Cartoon!

Action platform games getting crowded! Oddly enough this games with definite playtime and manageable difficulty lures me in
It stans out in the saturated market :)
Is it worth 24 dollars? It's on a 55% sale price right now on ps4
Hey does your character have a home in the game? Preferably one I can upgrade or customize? I just want a place to call my own lol.
Not really, it's more of a straight up platformer
nice test , but you forget michiru yamane ( the composer of " castlevania symphony of the night " and all castlevania on gba, ds , ps2... ) in your review of this wonderful game...
Awesome review Luis! You made me run out and buy this game. Love the little extras inside too ❤️
Hope you love it as much as I did :)
Dang! A 9.5 huh? Looks great!
Hi how does the switch version compare to the PS4 version such as frame rate and resolution?
Identical, I'm not sure if playing on a Pro makes it 4k but I imagine that'd be the only difference.
The games awesome, question I have is what do you do with the rainbow drops ? Thanks
Trade it to the loot npc for some treasure markers on your map
@@Luisgvn where is he?
@@Luisgvn i assume somewhere in the village of lupia ?
im looking but cant find him is it something you unlock late?
He's the turtle npc
cool zoom effect :)
Haha thanks!
The game is wonderful but a bit too frustrating sometimes.
Definitely picking this one up.
Any plans to review Everspace for Switch?

Reminds me a lot of Shantae
Probably that hand-drawn art style :)
It dose looks like shantae 2D animated styles
The Wonder Boy series inspired Shantae.

Is it long enough to warrant its price tag? Is it too easy? How does it fair compared to Shantae?
It can take you anywhere from 15-23 hours depending on how much you spend buying items and searching for secret areas. I enjoyed it and would recommend at the current price.
