- Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom review/first thoughts is an upcoming platform game developed by Game Atelier and published by FDG Entertainment for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game is a spiritual successor to Sega and Westone Bit Entertainment's Wonder Boy series. It will be released on December 4, 2018.
Monster Boy was originally created by Paris-based studio Game Atelier as a planned Kickstarter project titled Flying Hamster II: Knight of the Golden Seed, a sequel to the company's 2010 Flying Hamster.After publisher FDG Entertainment picked up the game, it was reworked into a Wonder Boy successor titled Monster Boy and the Wizard of Booze, as Sega owned the rights to the Wonder Boy name. The game was later retitled to Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom due to criticisms towards the previous subtitle of Wizard of Booze, which is American slang regarding alcoholic beverages.The game is being developed in collaboration with Wonder Boy series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa, who also supported DotEmu and Lizardcube's remake of Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap. The game's soundtrack was composed by a team of Motoi Sakuraba, Michiru Yamane, Yuzo Koshiro, Keiki Kobayashi, Takeshi Yanagawa, and Haruka Shimotsuki, with some rearranged music from past entries in the series

Can’t wait to pick up Monster Boy. Had it preordered for a while now. Big fan of the series myself, with WB in Monster World being one of my favorite Genesis games. Great to hear they did the franchise justice!

The design of the blue hair kid reminds me of Ryu from Breath of Fire... god I want a new core game like the older ones.

Yo, Johnny good news. The developer just announced this today "FDG Entertainment has announced that Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom will be coming to PlayStation 5.
On PlayStation 5, the game will be upgraded with native 4K support while also running at 120FPS using HDMI 2.1 for some super-slick platforming action.
FDG Entertainment will also confirmed they be offering the next-gen version of the game as a free upgrade for all players who have already purchased the title. With 2D games such as Monster Boy already looking great on current-gen hardware, it's good to know that there's room to upgrade further with 120FPS support, although you will need a TV or monitor that supports such high frame rates to see the results!"
I am currently playing it and it is so good. What a vast and well connected world, so many fan service in every corner. Grab it when it is in sale
I will be picking this up for my 60 year old mother for Xmas, she's a huge fan of adventure island I'm sure she will love the wonder boy series.
She'll like the first one but there isn't really a comparison for the sequels.

This game is gorgeous. This is exactly the type of art style/graphics I wish Capcom would use for their Mega Man games.

I have such a great memory of renting Wonder Boy in Monster World for Sega genesis from a local grocery store as a kid. What a fun weekend. 30 years later.... i need to get this.
I too used to rent this game every weekend but never completed it until the remake, best £8 I ever spent!
I'm so happy that I was able to burn through the dragon's trap remake with my kids lately. But I was sad when it was over....not realizing that this one existed. I bought it last week and it's pure bliss

Started to play today and i got to tell you...this is one of the best 2D platformer that i've played in a long time! And as a Wonderboy game, is probably one of the best in the whole series! Simply a masterpiece! Thanks Johnny for let me know of this game. I would have been missed a fantastic game!
Oh my. I just bought this for PC. 120 hz, ultrawide and the art is awesome, the music, everything is spot on.. an absolute joy!!! Get it now!!!

I really love your passion for games... and when you mentioned that you teared up about it made have a deep thought inside my own life and appreciate the reason why i play the games that I do. Not because they are AAA like the 50th version of assassins creed or call of duty but because the story they tell even if they are simplistic and take to a place where I can never be but dream about in wonder and aspire. So I'd never played the original games, but I picked up Wonderboy the Dragons Trap for Switch, and i absolutely loved it. I was looking up details on the original game while I played when I found your channel, and I've been watching for a couple weeks now. 1. Your channel is so fun to watch no matter what game you're talking about, but 2. You talk about a new generation finding this series, and I wanna confirm to you that I am for sure part of that new generation! I picked up Monsterboy and teared up a bit opening the case to find a booklet and stickers included with it. Hoping to see more games in the series soon! Thanks for covering such an awesome series
This has to be the most passionate review I've ever seen. Thanks, now I'm definitely getting this to play with my arcade sticks. Monster boy, dragons trap, Hollowknight, streets of rage, battletoads, ori 1 and 2. So many great classics this gen.

I heard many years ago, that this game caught Ryuichi Nishizawa's eye, and he liked it so much he added his input to keep it faithful. I could be wrong on that. I'm going off memory from a long time ago, but I think he had some part in it.
jeremy forrest You're right, in a recent interview with the developers in Wireframe (a new UK gaming mag!), he was a consultant for the game with Motoi Sakuraba and Yuko Koshiro composing the music. Cutscenes were done by Japanese animation studio, Nomad.
I have so many fantastic memories involving the Wonder Boy series of games. I was already excited about this one, but hearing you talk about it, and how you feel about it has just made me far more excited about getting it. I just have no idea which system I'll get it on though. But man, I can't wait! It looks fantastic!

I'm so happy a game like this is coming out in this day and age. I didn't grow up with the Wonder Boy series, but I bought the remake on Switch on a complete whim and fell in love. So stoked for this game!!

I grew up with the master system and mega drive. Had the Wonder Boy series. I got the Nintendo Switch physical copy for myself and I'm saving it for Christmas. You got me even more excited than I already was! :D
Wonder Boy III Dragons Trap, Wonder Boy in Monster World and Monster World 4 are some of my all time favorite games, and I'm so happy this game was made and made well. I am dying for a Monster World 4 remake/sequel! The Arabian Nights theme with Asha and her Pepelegoo seen floating here at 0:09 is by far my favorite in the series.
I'm so glad to hear your thoughts on this. I have had the physical edition pre ordered for sometime and I am very excited to play it. My first experience with the series was Wonder Boy remake on the switch. I thought the game was fantastic so I am glad to hear the great things about this.
Wow, didn't realize they had finally released this! The Monster World series is my favorite series of all time with my favorites being Wonder Boy III/MW2 and Wonder Boy V/MW3. Unfortunately, I don't own any consoles anymore and will have to wait until it comes out on PC.

Fact is this game is one for the ages man I did 100 percent all the way and now hoping they can make a monster boy 2 because this has did it’s job and made me a fan, I am now a monster fan boy.
I finished Dragons Trap recently and LOVED it. Then I saw there was this game and I didn't know where it fit. So Im happy you made this video. ITs such a shame it costs so much to pick up though :(

Wonder Boy on the SMS was my first game (other than the pack-in of Hang-On/Astro Warrior) for my first video game system. This series is hugely significant for me.
I loving this game too, but I had to import the Switch and PS4 version as they're not available as physical copies in Europe. The music is amazing too, some of it playing in my head when I'm at work XD
PS: The "30th anniversary sticker" does make me feel old though.

They changed artstyle during middle of development. You may check it out, artstyle during kickstarter completely different.

I'm glad you mentioned Megaman 11. That game was so new, yet so true to the originals. The way double dragon gaiden: rise of the dragons, brought something new, but faithful to the predecessor. It just dropped to £8.74 on Xbox market and I'll searching youtube for affirmation.
Subscribed! Love this video and will be picking this game up at some point. Wonder Boy was one of my favorite games growing up. I had the original game on the Sega Master system and then eventually I got the Sega Genesis release.
I'll have to keep an eye on this one because it caters to everything that I love about video games. I love to see these bright colourful 2D anime graphics in a video game and I think despite its simplicity in gameplay it just caters to a beautiful enthralling video game experience. I sincerely hope more video game companies take note and make more games like this and I would like to see the sales for this game do incredibly well.

Now I'm glad I pre-ordered this back in June. I'm so glad older games are getting the love they deserve.
I had the original Wonder Boy on the Master System, and it was one of my favorites at the time. It later got ported to the NES by Hudson as Adventure Island, and they went on to create a series based on it.
I'll tell you Johnny, I played Dragon's Trap and loved it. Was a bit on the fence about buying Monster Boy with how busy I'll be with Smash, but your video convinced me of the importance of games like this these days, so I just ordered it. Thanks!

It's rare I get envious... but damn you for getting to play this game early. Been waiting a long time to play another wonderboy game and this one has been looking very similar to my favorite one in the series wonderboy 5, with the addition of the monster forms from dragons trap.
I feel johnny’s enthusiasm when he said he wants to take his time playing it.
I been enjoying the adventure since I started playing cursed kingdom and it’s been one hell of a ride.
I’ve posted so many pics from this game on my facebook because I wanted to show others how wonderful this game is.
I’m surprised he didn’t showcase the instruction manual (especially for the switch), its was well drawn from beginning to end.
The only gripe I had (not towards the game) was the fact that it got pushed back a few times (I payed off my preorder in June because it was supposed to come out in July, then I was told that it’s release was in August, then a few days before coming out I heard it was pushed to October, then a week before its release in October it got pushed to December 4th).
This game was so worth the time waiting to enjoy playing.
I do believe that I will be purchasing this.

Haha, as a Wonder Boy fan, playing this game was like Captain America "I understood that reference" every 5 minutes. But I loved it. Feel the exact same way as you about.

Just unwrapped this game today and been playing it all day, highlight xmas gift! So far enjoying this, only about 15% of the map explored.
I had a hard time getting into Wonderboy only because I felt confused as to where to go all the time. I should give it another shot. Monster Boy does look amazing. It reminds me of Shantae and if it’s anything like that, then I will pick this up.

Never played Wonderboy, i do have some memories of the Sega one though, might have played it at a friends or something, just got this and it's incredible. Ordered a copy of Wonderboy on switch today, i want a physical copy of this, but it'll have to wait until next week. I got the digital for under $20 and i love it enough to get a physical copy, at a mark up! Gem of a series.
Great review and great game! Does anyone have the list of closing/end credits at the very end of this game? Screenshots? I know LOTS of people helped to develop this game but I haven't seen any list or video of the people who made this game happen. These people deserve some kudos!

Monster World IV....I felt so happy when I beat that game when I got it before the Wii shop shut down, Seeing the promo music video for this game knew this is going to be something I would get

This is fantastic!! I was concerned about the music because to me, that is what puts these games together and above others. I checked into it and they nailed it!! They even used the familiar sounds from the original games like coin drops.
So glad to hear this game is a homerun! I’ve had my copy preordered for months. Now I’m super pumped to start playing it.

I'm the type of gamer you're talking about but even though I really enjoyed the idea of the last remake, I stopped playing it because of the extremely far between save points that just made the game frustrating to me. Is this one similar in that the checkpoint/save points are few and far between?

Wonderboy The Dragon's Trap on Switch is what got me interested in the Wonderboy series. I'm really looking forward to playing this.
I have been following this game for year or so now and this is the first time I realised that it is not an official sequel to wonder boy or monster land. That is incredibly clever no one will ever notice that it's monster boy unless is pointed out to them.
Dragon's Trap is a remake of Wonder Boy III for the SMS, actually. The other games in the series were Wonder Boy V for the SMS and Genesis, which is a great game (specially on the Genesis), and there was also Monster Lair, which is more of shooter/platformer really, and was also named Wonder Boy III in the west for some reason.
I'm a huge Castlevania fan. I never expected this game to have Metroidvania elements and certainly loved the fact Symphony of the Night's composer, Michiru Yamane co-worked on the music for this game.
I loved it from start to end, it's a brilliant addition to the series. I was hoping for a New Game+ mode after I finished it, but all in all, I had a blast playing it.
I am right there with you, bought a Sega master system just for womderboy 2 in the 80's and was so happy when this and Lizardcube's remake of Dragons trap which was an amazing game at the time.Remember Wonderboy and WB2 from the arcades. I loves your enthousuasm because I feel the same, I am 47 and love all kinds of games on ps4 and switch though these games I will buy on Switch off course..I also liked your streets of rage 4 announcement video..you are doing me a great favour by these video's..I am obviously not alone on the nostalgia mini hype tram. Btw could you explain or refer as to how and why the developers changed from pixel to animation art cause I rememer seeing footage of monsterboy as a pixel (sprite?) Art oriented game ...I love your work anyway.

I dabbled in the Wonder/Monster Boy series before with the games being on collections and such to find I weren't sure, come Dragon's Trap and it hooked me in. I bought the remake of Dragon's Trap on the PS4 and it finally clicked with me so Cursed Kingdom is definitely on my list. So glad to see this series have it's flame rekindled
