There are some great games on this list and some more turn-based RPGs I would add are SMT III: Nocturne HD Remaster, Sega Genesis Classics (which includes Phantasy Star II, III, & IV, as well as Shining Force I & II), the Sega Ages version of Phantasy Star (which includes an automapping feature), Grandia HD Collection, Darkest Dungeon, Cosmic Star Heroine, Langrisser I & II, Vambrace: Cold Soul, Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi, Planescape: Torment, Romancing SaGa II & III, Dragon Quest I, II, & III, and Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, & X.
Grandia as well as FFVII, VIII, IX are not turn based. But I see where you are coming from due to them being based on menu selected battle mechanics ;) Just wanted to point out there is a difference between turn based and ATB based systems.
@@RhythmGrizz Nocturne is basically just a dungeon crawler, it had a 3th person camera but still. When did Atlus Change that? With SMTV, that still has dungeon crawl sections. Even Persona 5 is a dungeon crawler, again a fancy one with 3th person camera. Avoid Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi, Kowloon HighSchool Chronicle and The lost Child if dungeon crawlers ain´t your cup of tea.
For Trails just a quick note: Trails from Zero that just came out takes place before Cold Steel 3/4 and will heavily feature characters and events that impact that game. Plus the sequel to From Zero is coming early next year so you could start with From Zero and by the time you get done Azure will be out soon which is the sequel to From Zero which will really build up events you only hear about in Cold Steel 1+2 Also Cold Steel 1&2 comes soon. Then Trails from Reverie comes which will continue the story that involves the stories of both series with a simultaneous narrative is next year as well.
@@arikari3672 on the Switch yes I would recommend starting with From Zero. The first Trilogy of the series isn't on switch *yet* so those events that happened will be mentioned often and the protagonists of those three will also show up in the rest of the franchise but From Zero is the second "generation" and in timeline is the earliest
Cold Steel 1&2 are coming soon? Based on what? Pretty sure that's not ever happening because XSEED owns the rights to the English versions. Otherwise they would have done it years ago.
@@TheFifthWill I thought I heard they were in Japan and assumed they would port it though is there a complication with localization? I know different companies would perhaps pose a problem but with such a push recently to give the series western release I had thought that was the plan lol
@@TheFifthWill Ya...haven't heard anything about Xseed localizing it (I know Japan has it on Switch though) or coming to a deal allowing NISA/someone else to take their translations and apply it under their name for Sky 1-3 and CS 1 and 2. Just about the only way it could at this point is if NISA was to do their own translation I guess if Xseed doesn't have rights to the games on Switch as well for localization (as in bought the rights to localize on any platform for a few decades I guess which would be the only way they'd be able to prevent NISA or another company from doing their own translations). Would love to see Sky 1 thru 3 and CS1 and 2 on Switch in the west too but I don't see it happening until at least Kuro 2 releases at best...at which point we'd probably be on Switch 2.0/whatever the next Nintendo console will be (probably another handheld/home hybrid giving the Switch's success but just much stronger than the Switch so games like Tales of Arise, FFXVI, etc could be played on it).
Hey OJ, how about a video on lesser RPGs like those Kemco ones? Some of them suck but there's a few cool ones worth checking out. I buy em cause they're cheap lol.
Bravely Default 2 was a very fun game. It's my first game in this series, although I did play Octopath traveler. Thanks for hyping this up like you have been.
While it's not exclusive to the Nintendo switch, I really enjoy star renegades and it's timeline mechanic. Would recommend for anyone cuz I've spent way more time on that than almost any other turn-based RPG. plus the rogue-lite elements are fun
man i really couldn't make sense of that combat system, I understood the general gist of it, but some elements just were not explained that well in the tutorials...
@@anab0lic I agree that they could have explained it a little better like when you "break" an enemy, you push them to the front of the next timeline unless they had more points to break. Then you could extend it. Some of this had to be something you just understood as you played more, but they should have explained that from the start
Persona 5 is great story wise and the maps. Visuals music all 11/10 but the combat is 4/10 not because its boring or bad its really good. Its just ridiculously easy even on the hardest difficulties. I like when they are hard like shin megami games. Any random battle can just nuke you and you always have to strategize the smallest things. Dragon quest is always a good game. The classics gameplays are always fun. But the classic story of a hero fighting the demon king gets kinda old. Love that half way point tho.
I love this collection of great rpgs. I absolutely love Octopath traveler Monster hunter stories 2 Triangle strategy So this will be great list to consider. But I really advise anyone reading this. As you missed a great opportunity to put an amazing title on ........ And that is FINAL FANTASY 12 specifically to the switch. FF12 IS ABSOLUTEY INCREDIBLE ALSO really shocked that you didn't include xenoblade chronicles 3. But really great list I'm definitely going to check out these other titles
Nintendo learned their lesson from wii u and let just about anybody release a game which has been a blessing to us rpg lovers. There are tons of rpgs people don't know about because I bet half of them only got a limited release on Amazon or limitedrungames etc
You can start with Trails from Zero but i would not recommend it if you want the optimal trails experience. All games tie together going back and forth is kinda weird
PlayerEssence, I believe you just made it more decisively easier for the last 4 games I'll be adding to my Switch. I was going to go with SMT V, but having seen your review on it, Persona 4 Golden is going to my choice instead. Besides I'm currently working through Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition which is a pretty stressful game as it's also one helluva mega-marathon grind! Am also going to be adding Bravely Default II & Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE Encore as some point also. Do you know by any chance if there will be a definite release date set in 2023 for Genshin Impact being available on the Nintendo Switch? That's the one game I'm HIGHLY anxiously awaiting for as I was for Lego Star Wars: Skywalker Saga😁😁😁😁😁!

Triangle Strategy is definitely the closest game to Shining Force III that I have seen. I’d highly recommend picking it up on whichever platform.
Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth is also a good monster collecting RPG.
I'm honestly surprised Divinity Original Sin 2 didn't make the list. Still 1 of my favorite games on switch
Stunningly good

Love your videos, dude. Great list!
South park games are also good

Are there no turn based RPGs anymore where you play as adults? Like I’m a 40 year old man I don’t want to play children and teenagers.
