I had the rare opportunity to see him play live 4 times. All were before he made it big (79 80) and all in small venues in Houston. The last time he opened up for George Thorogood on the U of H campus. Truly they were the highlights of my concerts adventures.
Why is he so damned good? He was born with natural musical genius, had an older brother who was maybe the best rock and blues guitarist in Texas and who exposed him to all the old blues masters that most people weren’t aware of, and he took his guitar everywhere he went, including to bed and to school, playing every spare minute. He played in the clubs every night, talking his way onstage and falling asleep in class. Genius plus fiery passion plus constant work. A little guy with huge hands who got close to the blues masters by his obvious ability, his knowledge of their riffs and styles, and his personality and respect.
Watching this just now took me back to one of the three times I got to see him before the helicopter crash. I can remember in Kansas City he did a slow one, I can't remember if it's this one but really atmospheric and he already had us in the palm of his hand, but he was actually barefoot on stage and he went and sat down at the front of the stage and everything went dark except for just a soft spotlight on him, and he just sat there with his legs dangling off the front of the stage as if he was sitting on a dock fishing or something, and played for us, and it was so atmospheric it made you want to cry. It felt so intimate.
Stevie was always experimenting & pushing it to the limit. Definitely check out his 1982 rendition of Dirty Pool live at the Montreux Jazz Festival, my personal favorite & a younger Stevie Ray before record contract. Then Tin Pan Alley with Johnny Copeland at the 1985 Montreux Jazz Festival . Both amazing blues performances.
Stevie Ray Vaughan was a true genius who was born in Dallas Texas on October 3,1954, he has a brother 3 yrs older then Stevie named Jimmie Vaughan who was a great guitarist In his own right and had a band called The Fabulous Thunderbirds but he never achieved the success Stevie did. Jimmie was the first to get an electric guitar when he was 10 yrs old and Stevie loved it, Stevie said he would listen to Jimmie play and would play his guitar while he was out. Stevie said when Jimmie played a Muddy Watters record he was hooked on the Blues. When Stevie was 7 yrs old he got a toy guitar with cowboys and Indians on it for his birthday but even though it was a toy guitar he taught himself how to play Wine Wine Wine by Stick McGhee and Thunderbird by The Night Caps.Stevie joined a band called The Chantones in 1964, his first gig was at a roller rink so Jimmie gave Stevie his electric guitar for his gig and Stevie played it for time to time his hole career. I hear alot of people say that Stevie said biggest influence for him was Jimi Hendrix but that doesn't make sense, Stevie always said his biggest influence was his big brother Jimmie Vaughan and then the great Blues artists like B.B King, Muddy Watters and Albert King who was actually Stevie's Godfather. Stevie put a band together in 1977 called The Triple Threat Reuve with Lou Ann Barton on vocals but when Lou Ann left the band on November 24,1979 Stevie took over on vocals thank God 😅😅. In 1980 Stevie changed the name to Double Trouble, Chris Layton drummer joined The Triple Threat Reuve on September 10,1978 and Tommy Shannon joined Double Trouble on June 23,1981, Reese Wynans joined Double Trouble on June 7,1985. Although Stevie's career only span 7 years starting with the release of his first album Texas Flood on June 13,1983 but accomplished so much, on December 13 1983 Stevie's Austin City Limits video was voted Guitar Player Magazine's Best New Talent, Best Electric Blues Guitar Player and Best Guitar Album with Texas Flood, Stevie and Jeff Beck are the only 2 Triple award guitarist ever. On November 18,1984 Stevie won a W.C.Handy National Blues Award, Entertainer Of The Year and Instermental Of The Year and Stevie was the only white man to win either. Stevie won 6 Grammys, 10 Austin Music Awards, 5 W.C.Handy National Blues Awards, in 2000 he was inducted into The Blues Hall Of Fame, in 1982 he was the first musician to be inducted into The Austin Music Hall Of Fame and in 2015 he was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and won many more awards after his death. With all that he never got the chance to enjoy a #1 hit until 2 months after his death with Crossfire. On August 26,1990 Stevie went to East Troy Wisconsin to open 2 shows for Eric Clapton at The Alpine Valley Music Theater along with Robert Clay, Buddy Guy and his brother Jimmie Vaughan, Jimmie said Stevie came down from his hotel room and told Jimmie and the band he had a weird dream that he died and he was looking down at all these people crying but even though he was dead he felt at peace. On August 27,1990 after Eric Clapton finish his last show Stevie along with the others went on stage and played the last song he would ever play Sweet Home Chicago by Robert Johnson. After the show Stevie boarded a helicopter that crashed into the side of a mountain right after takeoff and everyone on board were killed instantly, the pilot had just failed his test on using the gages for that helicopter, he never flew at night and he never flew that helicopter before. Sorry I love Stevie Ray Vaughan and I've watched every interview of Stevie and Jimmie for information. Imo STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN WILL ALWAYS BE THE GOAT and is sadly missed.
i giggled when you said that you've never seen that side of Stevie. He has more sides yet, young man. Give a listen to "Life By The Drop" which, as near as I can tell, is just Stevie and his 12 string acoustic. I have never been able to find a video of him performing the song. There is an acoustic gig (Stevie Ray Vaughan-Live-MTV Unplugged 1990) where he did a 2 song set with a borrowed Guild before having to catch a plane. There are no videos. It was recorded for In Step near end of his life and left off the final cut. I have talked to people who have said he played it at end of some local shows they went to...but I doubt it as there no bootlegs.
Sheer genius. Stevie played directly from his heart and soul no matter if he was playing for himself at home on the couch, or in front of thousands. He was so Real, which I believe is part of why he resonates so deeply even all these years after his passing.

Just rewatched this reaction and wanted to comment on his facial expressions which I love seeing‼️. Self taught playing at age 7 learning by listening to records by the blues greats and found if he could mimic the sound he was hearing with his voice, he could find it on the guitar. And find those notes he did 💯. He has said at first he was just learning every note there was to play and spent the rest of the time learning what to leave out. So he became conditioned to mouthing/speaking/singing while playing. But he obviously tapped into another world when he played and he was considered an open channel. Can't wait for Sunday for another Stevie Ray reaction🎸💙🎶💯

I believe his facial expressions happen as he "sub-vocalizes": he's feeling what it would be like to sing what he is playing. We all do it, and, done with the requisite intensity, we're likely to instantly cry--you gotta dump out of the intensity, or lower the pitch, to keep the tears at bay. It has something to do with opening the sinuses with throat movements...Everyone should sing! 🤗

Quick fact about Stevie, I have read 2 biographies about him, and one thing that was brought up by several people who knew him well was that he had extraordinary hearing. The white guitar is called Charley in memory of a guitar store owner/tech that built the guitar and supplied SRV. He was a good friend. He always uses this for the song Life Without You which was written for Charley after he died of a heart attack unexpectedly.

My brother worked at playin' since he was 7. He never took it off his neck. He worked at 7 days a week 7 hours a day 365 days a year. His wife lenny said she never heard him snore but she did hear em play the God Damn Guitar. He was playin' guitar behind his back when he was 7 years old gone down the road on his bike. The neithbors where callin' our house sayin' do ya'll know what Stevie is doin' out here in the road on his bike? He's playin' the giitar behind his back. I ain't never see nobody do that before. There jaw's dropped to the ground. It was funny. ❤❤ We just said yeah we'er used to it. ❤❤ But when we first seen him do that our jaws dropped to the ground. ❤❤❤❤ He was the best brother you could ever have. I miss em every day.
