Drilling Out 2002 Focus Ignition Lock

  • * the instructions I read said to measure 3mm down from the key slot and mark the spot. Use a 4mm drill bit to make a small pilot hole, then use a 10mm drill to drill a 35mm deep hole. I can't tell if they want you to drill out all of the "tumbler" things. If you follow those instructions, however, you WILL definitely drill all of them out. If you are able to drill a smaller hole and avoid all of the tumbler things, you will be able to put your key in. But I don't know if it will allow your key to turn.*
    I ended up using a 11/32 in (~9mm) drill bit and tore all of my tumblers apart. All of the metal shavings left inside the lock made it really hard to put my key in. However, I think that if you can get all of the tumblers and the other little 1/8x1/8x5/8 piece out of the bottom, then you probably won't need the key.

    Great video! I thought I messed up but then I saw you drilled out alot more in the key cylinder... i went for it and the lock pin popped out. After more drilling, I was able to get the key back in the cylinder so I could turn it... that did it! Thanks for your help!

    If you do the drill out correctly and take out that little lock piece do you still need to buy a brand new tumbler? Can I just take out that piece with the hole and drive for a few weeks? Thanks!

    you could have just drilled the locking pin since you already took off the hood of the steering wheel

      NOT TRUE ON A FORD IGNITION...For Future viewers: Just Drilling the pin out doesn't allow you to get the cylinder out because that black ring on the inside has to be turned and line up with the opening that it fits into. You have to turn the cylinder before it will come out.

      Yea it has to be turned to acc to be pulled out so either way your gonna have to pick or drill the lock

  • @m3t30rA
    @m3t30rA 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    You went to low, you were supposed to go where as mentioned, although- the diagram was visually incorrect. It would have made that button fall out and you could pull the whole thing out.

    • @bradt9350
      @bradt9350 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is true fact. If you drill too low, you will damage the outer part of the lock cylinder housing and possibly cause the cylinder to hand up where it damage has been done..

    • @mcedsonrunescape
      @mcedsonrunescape  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This video is not for people who are trying to steal cars. This is for people who have the common problem of the ignition cylinder faulting and then their original key doesn't work anymore. I had my original 2 keys and nothing worked. the lock just stopped working. So I made this video because no one else had a video about doing this procedure. the original ignition lock ends up faulting after a certain amount of time.

    As soon as your key starts to act up, replace that crappy Ford cylinder with a cylinder from Strattec. Do it before things get too bad.

    I rarely comment, but Im forced to so others find out ask questions, this method of taking your ignition cylinder out… that takes all of 30 seconds, under the column your see three holes, 2 are for removing the screws so you can remove the bottom shroud, the third hole is for releasing the ignition lock, push on it and it will release the cylinder. Only if you have the ignition on! So no key? There’s a hook tool to release it, because if the lock is off the pin has not rotated making it out of alignment. Stop drilling shit out!

      If you can, please help. My shroud is a one piece. Can't get to the push pin to release it. Nobody knows where the key is either. That's why I'm replacing it

    DON'T DRILL !!! Simply watch tutorials on how to remove the ignition assembly, (easy, stuck or not) and when it is out simply remove the tumbler from the housing, (one c-clip) and pry out the side-bar lock and springs, (tutorials on that as well) no more problems, and it doesn't cost a dime. No keys or tumbler to replace or code.

    you just have to turn the steering wheel a little to unlock the ignition, you ruined a perfectly good ignition for nothing

    • @mcedsonrunescape
      @mcedsonrunescape  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Guiseppe Falzarano sorry I forgot to say that I already tried turning the wheel in the very beginning. It's the most well known way of getting the ignition to "unlock" and turn over. However, this was not that problem. I had been having problems with my key turning over for a couple months before it finally quit working completely. That's why I searched the internet for alternate ways to get the key to turn, and tried for over an hour to make it work. It would have been much easier to turn the key over and remove the bad ignition lock the standard way. It never worked, though, so I was forced to drill it out.

    • @roadsideprophet2012
      @roadsideprophet2012 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Guiseppe Falzarano it is an extremely common problem with 2000-2003 ford focus. When it finally quits turning at all there is literally nothing you can do except drill it out. I've been pulling, pushing, twisting, turning, banging, and begging with my wife's ignition for the last 4 hours and it will not even pretend to budge.
