When the key won't turn in the ignition or turns more heavily, it's time to react.
This problem is both annoying and dangerous as it can leave you stranded (you won't be able to start the car).
This is one more repair that you can do on your own, with things found around the household.
All you'll need is some WD-40 spray or an oil can filled with engine oil.
So, before visiting a mechanic or starting to pick apart the lock, take a look at the video tutorial and give it a try.

After watching several other videos with possible fixes for this situation, stranded by the way, this worked. I didn’t have any WD-40 or other spray type lubricant but I did have a partial bottle of lawnmower engine oil in the back. I opened it up got a little on my finger, lubed the key with it and have it a try. Didn’t work, shit! In my mind I’m saying to myself this isn’t gonna work either! The man said try it 2 or 3 times. I hit a little more oil on my finger and lived the key again. Here goes nothin! Gave it a turn and the key moved like nothing was wrong. Thanks a million my friend. I’m gonna go raise a cold one to you.
I was a skeptic at first but sure enough this actually got my neighbors truck to turn over. I was sitting there for over half an hour trying to get it to turnover before seeing this technique. It may not work for everyone, but it worked on a 2001 F150.
Thanks this just saved me from being stranded in a gas station 300 miles from home in 90 degrees of heat never had a problem with this part before on my jetta 2008 so from my family deepest thanks

Thank you very much! This repair worked perfect. I tried everything I could and was about to get it towed to a garage and it would have cost me a lot of money of which my wife and I do not have. We were being told to tear it apart and all kinds of other things. It was so easy. Thank you again. Do not use standard WD-40! Standard WD-40 is a solvent, not a lubricant and will, in fact, remove any type of lubricant that is in the cylinder. Use a lubricant that has a silicone, graphite or Teflon base only. Something that will dry fast and won't turn the inside of your cylinder into a dirt magnet. WD-40 makes a dirt and dust resistant dry lube version that is specifically made for lock cylinders. Engine oil is probably something else you don't want to put inside your lock cylinder. Dirt and dust particles stick to engine oil like glue.

@@PG_FISHINGspray the lock out with electronic connection cleaner, or something else that won't leave a oily residue, let it dry, then lube it with graphite.
Thanks dude! Saved me. The ignition switch started being really stiff a few days ago from now being so hard to turn, like even past the ACC part. I put a little bit of engine oil that I had since I had no WD40 or silicone spray/graphene, on paper and smeared it on the key and after a few wiggles and turns it finally loosened and is now smooth as butter!

Hey I just tried what you said about putting the motor oil on the key because I had no wd40. I got the oil from up under my hood, one of the oils there and wet a piece of paper towel. I had been having trouble 2 days with the ignition not cutting off completely and I was feeling terrible knowing it was gonna cost me a small fortune to fix.
I did what you said (lubricated the inside of the lock as well) and it worked!!! I just wanted to say thank you so very much! You have saved me sooooo much money!!

Oh my this actually saved my life
I was turning my key SO hard in the ignition thinking it was locked to the point my fingers started to swell
All I needed to do was give the steering wheel waggle and it started

If the inner components of the lock are not damaged, then you've probably solved the problem for a longer period of time.
Just pay attention from time to time is it working properly. If it starts to get stuck despite the fact that you've cleaned and lubricated it, then change the lock ASAP.

Never saw so many thank you's in a row. Didn't think it would work , but couldn't get the key to turn. Had WD40 but no straw for it. What the heck, I'll just spray it in as best I could, kind of flooded it. To my amazement, the key turned immediately. Add another THANK YOU!!

Thank you thank you thank you! I was stuck at work and had to get my kid from daycare. I got the plastic off and was able to remove the ignition switch from the cylinder. I was able to turn the key enough to unlock the steering wheel and started the car with a screwdriver in the ignition switch! Life saver!
Definitely just the jiggling the wheel while trying to turn the key without even using wd-40 helped me get home from being stranded in 100 degrees with my little ones! Thank you!

Thank you for making this video! Was almost stranded out of town. Tried WD-40 at first but it didn't work. Then watched your video and sprayed WD-40 directly on the key like you showed. Solved the problem and saved the day!

technically speaking wd40 is a cleaner, as far as i understannd graphene should be used as a lubricant.

Dude, you just saved us a tow bill!!! Sprayed some wd-40 in there and put the hey in and wiggled around. Pulled out key and there was a lot of gunk on it. Worked with it a few minutes and BOOM, we are running!!! Thank you so much!!!

Thanks for the assistance, took my wife's car out and pulled the wheel after I had turned the car off, came back and the key wouldn't move, jiggled the wheel a little and pulled on the key and it worked! Thanks again!

Bruh thank god ❤️🔥😇 you are literally god for me rn. My mom’s car didnt turned on while I was doing some random stuff to the car in a parking lot. Mom wasn’t nearby and I was really worried. I did every possible thing and then just googled after few hours of 😞 failure. And just found this video and within few minutes I’m driving happy and safe to home.😅 Btw in my case my all my brakes, steering wheel and the ignition was locked and I low-key freaked out so I tried steering my wheel left and right and at the same time I turned the ignition on and it worked thankfully 😅

I was going to work and then it wouldn’t come out so I had to come back home😭 my mom is very mad currently
I had the same problem with my 97 Mustang. It was simply a matter of the original key being ‘worn out’ preventing it from engaging the ignition lock. As a member of AAA, I simply contacted an Auto Locksmith affiliated with AAA, had them make a couple of new keys (no charge) and problem solved. Key turned smooth as butter and use of oil was not necessary

Oh, thank you for this video!!!! I went out to the truck this morning and took a socket (was not about to take the plastic off around the ignition) and held it over the ignition and tapped it with a rubber mallet like 3 time and it started right up.
Spent 15 minutes in a gas station parking lot this wonderful Christmas morning and the steering wheel trick worked perfectly thank you so much I thought I was gonna be stranded thank goodness for this video

Thank you!! I watched another video that said to tap on the key with a rubber mallet. I did that a few times and it still was not working well. Then I came back and looked again and found your video, Of course try some lubrication first! That helped but not enough. Got my spare key which is still brand new (2002 Liberty) and it worked just fine - like brand new! My original key was worn out. Got two new keys made for $5 and all is well.

Thanks! The oil worked for me. I was stuck at work yesterday until my wife brought another key for me to try. Her key worked, but it still took a couple of minutes even with her key which isn't nearly has worn as mine (18-year-old car). When I got home, I shut the car off without removing the key or touching the steering wheel. Again it took a couple of minutes of trying to get it to turn. After putting a few drops of oil on the key and working it for a few minutes, it now turns freely!
