    If your key won't turn or is stuck, no matter how much you wiggle it, turn the steering wheel, or press the brake, then you might want to try this. But use as a last resort, at your own risk.
    This is pretty common in Jeeps, at first my key wont turn in the ignition, but if I wiggling it a little it will eventually work. I have been doing this for over a year now. Until today, no matter how much I wiggle the key, turn the steering wheel, press the brake, it will not turn. I'm totally locked.
    So I did some research and found out that it is the lock cylinder that has gone bad and I need to have a local locksmith replace it at a cost of about $120 in parts and $50 in labor. Another option is to tow it to a Jeep dealer and pay over $900 for a entire steering column.
    OR
    You can just take a hammer or rubber mallet and hit the end of the key, this will bent the copper latch piece allowing you to start your jeep.

    Amazing tip! Thank you. The official directions for installing a new ignition switch and ignition cylinder lock told me i had to drill through the head bolts on the steering column to replace the latter. No way I was going to do that! I knew there had to be an easier way even though my key wouldn't turn. This was the tip I needed. Once i had the key in the ACC position on my 97 Geo Prizm, i was able to insert the pick and depress the pin so I could pull the cylinder out! Really really easy. I'm so glad I decided I could fix this myself. I now have a brand new ignition switch and cylinder and everything is running great. I probably saved myself about 100 to 150 bucks. But not for the faint of heart if you don't like getting your hands greasy!

    Tried turning the wheel back and forth while trying to turn the key and it didn't work. Watched this video when I was at my last wit in knowing what to do and said what the heck.... • @warrenhardy
      @warrenhardy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love that you pointed out that "Tried turning the wheel back and forth while trying to turn the key and it didn't work" cause I got the odd post on here saying thats the problem. We all have experience the key being locked cause you turned the car off with the wheels turned and the pressure on the lock is preventing it from turning. and yes we all know that you just have to turn the wheel to remove the pressure and the key will turn.
      But that is not issue with the vast majority of people that have found their way here. They are here because of a bigger issue. and this hammer trick doesn't fix that issue, but it is a temporary cure.
      Glad it worked out for you and so many others. Cheers

    This saved me from costly repairs just this afternoon. My wife failed to keep the wheels straight when parking and the steering wheel locked. I had to ride my bike to get the key in the ignition using this method. No danger of breaking a key if you don't pretend you're Thor. Think "firm taps."

    I had this same problem with my Toyota Sienna. I tried for hours to get the key to turn without success. I came across your video on TH-cam and gave it a shot. This is a standard flat key, not a chip key or anything. I removed the key from my key ring and tapped the end a few times with a steel tire gauge. I then tried to turn the key and voila!, it turned! I sprayed some WD40 in the key slot and tried turning the ignition off then back on a few times and it worked each time. Amazing! Thanks so much for this tip. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best.

    when I had the same problem it turned out to be shavings from the key being put in and taken out, over time, building up and sitting in there, gumming up the lock. Striking it would make the metal shavings loosen but if that's the case here your lock will jam again once they resettle in a few weeks.
    I just put paper towel on the carpet below then sprayed a generous amount of lock lubricant in to flush it out, then a blast of air from a keyboard cleaner compressed air can. It cleaned it out without taking anything apart or hitting anything with mallets.

    • @ebreannamills8576
      @ebreannamills8576 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What type of lock lubricant did you use by chance?!

    • @KarmaTiger
      @KarmaTiger 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think I used lock de-icer, but any spray lubricant with the straw type nozzle will do - WD-40 would work fine. Remember to blast it out with an air can after.

    • @crispybacon7937
      @crispybacon7937 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The issue isn't lubrication nor is it metal shavings. The issue is a worn out key. Just like breaks, if you let those wear out too long, you end up damaging your rotors. With a key, if you let it wear down too much, you can wear out your ignition. There is a bar inside the ignition cylinder that is most likely not fully retracting and not allowing the cylinder to rotate. A "new" key, (not a shiny copy of a worn key) will allign the parts in the lock correctly to allow cylinder rotation. However, a worn key that has been ignorred or hit with hammners may be damaged where even a new key can't fix it. When this happens, its time to replace the cylinder. Contact your local locksmith if you experience this problem.

    • @KarmaTiger
      @KarmaTiger 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      yeah nevermind I had this same problem and metal shavings were the issue, jamming the cylinders, and once cleaned out it solved the problem. Nope, it can't possibly be that thing that happened.
      BTW brakes are b-r-a-k-e-s, not b-r-e-a-k-s.

    • @crispybacon7937
      @crispybacon7937 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Autocorrect doesn't always choose the correct word. Also, I make a good living helping people fix problems just like this. There may be metal shavings in your ignition jamming up your lock, but the reason the shavings got in there is because something is worn, either the key or the tumblers in the lock. Producing metal shavings is not a natural function of using a lock. Speaking of brakes, if your brakes were sparking every time you applied pressure on them, you wouldn't say it's a normal function of brakes and to just spray WD40 on them, would you? Hammering a cylinder is absolutely acceptable method of solving the immediate problem of getting your car to start, but that doesn't mean there isn't a problem.

YEAH and YAY! Thanks that worked!

    Everyone BEFORE doing this try pressing your foot on the break, turn your steering wheel to the left a little and hold the steering wheel in that position as you gently jiggle your key back and forth while also pushing the key inward.
    If that doesn't work than I'd try this as a last resort.

    I have a mid 2000s Grand Caravan that randomly the key would not turn. May take 5 attempts one time then 100 another of reinserting and twisting before it would turn. Today I could never get it to turn. A few YT videos taught me it is easy and cheap to replace the lock cylinder but it must be turned to near the start position to be removed. Figured I was screwed then came upon this video. At first I had little faith but gave it a try "or should I say WACK as you instructed" It Freaking Worked !!! As long as it works one more time when the ordered replacement cylinder gets here, it will have possibly saved me ether hundreds of dollars and / or many hours to resolve.

      Not necessarily lol. The 1st gen Honda pilots have this issue. I'm debating on taking a mallet to mine (temp fix as that cannot be good for too long without other components breaking down due to the damage from the hit.) Since they all work together in this lock, cant destroy one part of it with a mallet without having something else be affected usually. Will probably just go for a more permanent fix by either replacing the mechanism myself DIY or calling a locksmith.

    This vehicle is a Jeep. There are two types of ignition keys for these (as well as other Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler) vehicles. Before anybody starts hammering on thier key, first look at it, If the plastic section of the key is thin, go ahead and hammer the shit out of it. BUT if the plastic portion of the key is thick (like the one in this video), you should think twice about hammering on it. The thick keys have an RFID chip inside it. If you damage the chip, your vehicle wont start no matter what you do and the repair gets VERY expensive very quickly from that point on. The reason most ignition switches quit operating is because people set thier keys on the ground and dirt gets on the key..............people pull thier keys out of thier pockets and lint gets on the key.....so that's how dirt and lint finds it's way into the keyhole. Next thing ya know, the ignition lock tumblers get stuck and the key doesnt rotate anymore. Safest way to fix the situation is to spray BRAKE cleaner into the keyhole.........the brake cleaner evaporates and leaves NO sticky residue behind........spray a bunch of it in there. then push the key in and pull it out repeatedly (kinda like key sex with the keyhole). Do the spray thing a few times and the lock should work again. Let the brake cleaner dry up for a few minutes...........There is a dry powder type of "lubricant" that is used in the keyhole to keep the key switch moving properly. Many people think grease or "WD40" will fix a problem like this, but it just makes it worse. Obviously, the person who posted this video has a fucked up ignition switch, I mean, HOW often does his switch get stuck for him to "learn" the hammer trick.? If your keyhole gets stuck only a couple times a month, it means that the tumblers inside it are getting worn out and the lock cylinder needs to be replaced ASAP. The reason you should replace it ASAP is because if you wait until it is stuck one final time, you will have to break it in order to get it out.......but if you replace it before it refuses to turn one final time, all you have to do is position the key into the number 1 location and the ignition lock cylinder slips out in mere seconds.

    It worked! 2010 Ford F150. Thank you so much for posting this video. I had tried everything before this, resetting anti theft, jacking front end up, just trying for hours jiggling steering wheel and key. Didn't want to hotwire because it is a newer truck and antitheft would probably keep steering wheel locked. But I did this with a hammer, because I didn't have a rubber mallet and it worked. It didn't permanently break the locking mechanism, as I took key out I had to pound on it again for it to turn, but now that it's turning I'm going to just leave the key in the ignition. Luckily I live in a place where I can leave my keys in the ignition, doors unlocked and never worry.

      Do not use WD 40, this is what it does to lock cylinders. 4. Locks. The spray can prematurely wear down the internal mechanisms, especially in the pin tumbler locks, in door locks and padlocks. Go for graphite powder.

    This will only work if its the tumblers getting hung. Wont do anything if its because of a worn key. (accept probably damage something worst then it is) That said this can be a good temporary fix for dodge/jeep/chrysler (doesnt work to well on other autos) but you should still consider contacting a locksmith to have the ignition refitted with new wafers. Its much cheaper when lock is functioning which it probably wont be for much longer.

    So yesterday I arrived at un unloading with my truck, stopped on the weighing platform and went to the office to present papers, come back to the truck and the key doesn't fully enter the ignition and I can't start the truck. The company has only one weighing platform and every truck has to be weighed when he gets in and out. So I'm now stuck on the platform and worse, no-one can load or do deliveryes since the platform is now blocked by me, I tried about 40 minutes to start the truck but nothing, I was waiting for the repair service to come and while I was waiting for them and telling other angry truckers that the platform will soon be freed ( not very probable since to replace the thing where you put the key would take a while) so I checked on the internet to see if there is any solution and found this video, needless to say it didn't work :(

      Been driving a tow truck for AAA for the past eight years. Done that many times to loosen the tumblers of the lock. But I just tap it with the handle of a screwdriver. Jeeps are notorious for having this happen to them. Now I towed a Jeep Grand Cherokee to the local dealership because I couldn't tap the tumblers loose. The service writer said you need to whack them real hard with a dead blow mallet. He got in the Jeep, smacked the back of the key. And he got it started.

    This is usually a worn key and you need one cut to spec. Bit sometimes just lubricant is what it really needs. NOT wd-40. Something like triflow. Banging on it may work for a minute, but will result in a much more expensive repair later.
    When you start needing to jiggle the key, it's time for maintenance :)
