India Is Not Safe For Women? China Is Safe For Women?

  • Hi Guys, welcome back to the channel.
I wanted comment on the terrible news coming out of India, because I believe more coverage can only help in the fight against rape and violence against women. I have always been fascinated by India and at one point believed India and China had many similarities, however in the case of safety and especially Women's safety that is not the case. Why? Please comment and give your views. I have given the links to the two videos I mention.
Thank you for visiting our channel.

In China, in my opinion, people treat women as their beloved mothers, grannies, aunties, wives, daughters, nieces etc. but not as objects, sex tools or business products. I guess that's what makes the difference.

But you can't generalize a society yes women seafty is problem in india so in whole world. If you compare rape statistic of india and other countries you will see india is far better in per capita tearms even if you count unreported which is near 60%. I'm not saying there is no problem in india and reason is education if you go to rural area yes people think like that but if you go to urban are where people are educated they don't think like that. Also china is authoritarian country remember biggest masscare happened in China so its easy to impose ideology, law and everything but india is democracy with 2500 per capita income ,80% literacy ,10% poverty.

Now the things have changed somewhat, but the caste system has a shadow power over the society. Some of the best universities in India does not welcome the students from lower caste, even though they have a reservation given to them by law. Even if you do enter these prestigious univs, you will be discriminated so horribly that makes you wanna kill yourself. And many did kill themselves to the extent that IITs became the university with largest number of suicides in a year. It is like Ivy league univs in US becoming a suicide prone zone. My high school had quite a few Indians, they were highly educated and didn't act/talk indecenly.
A few years back I was in Bali with a friend, we were on the 4th row of beach chairs and alot of ladies sunbathing in bikinis in front of us.
A boat of about 15 Indian men in jeans and shorts, tees and shirts (totally not dressed for the beach) disembarked 20 meters away and all walked towards us and formed a wall between the beach chairs and the sea.
They were just staring down at the ladies and pointing, talking and smiling laughing in Indian to each other like they have no shame!
Some of the ladies were so uncomfortable they either got up and walked away or covered up with towels.
A group of big east European men got up and stood between them and their ladies.
The whole experience was an eye opener!
They were clearly fresh off the boat from India and probably not seen such a sight but the way they acted was disgusting!
I think it comes down to education and the environment norms they were brought up in back home. It'll take many years of development to bring up the poors in India, morals maybe second/third generation if they started yesterday!

    Hi Toby,
Why so many in India + much less in China - there are many reasons, here are just 2:
-for all it is faults, I think an extremely important saying of the CCP is "Women hold up half the Sky". Many Westerns may just
see this as propaganda, but I feel it is vitally educational. Chinese are taught women are important members of society,
which doesn't seem to be the case in India.
-probably many cases never even get reported to the police. As per Jayant Bhandari, an Indian-American financial advisor,
nothing get done in India unless you pay a bribe. If you are a poor Indian village girl, whom was raped by your neighbor,
will you report the crime to the police, knowing full well the stigma involved with your assault ? Therefore the perpetrator
never get punished, + he thinks he has a license to perpetrate his crime over + over again.

And that in a small rural place where there are no cameras to support your allegation, nor a police force that respect women, in particular? I had lived in a society in a relatively still underdeveloped for the first 25 years of my life. I have now lived in an advanced country both technologically and economically. The difference between the 2 kind of societies is vast. It changes mindset of the people when people know that their reporting will result in the certain investigation of the law-enforcement people, for instance, and then the courts are not susceptible to corruption by bribes. And lastly, the education of the very young citizenry, preferably at the kindergarten and primary school, to respect women is important, as it gets ingrained into the subconscious minds of even "would-be psychopathic criminals". It becomes a reflex action that they would naturally avoid to contemplate.

Allow me to offer a perspective as to why sexual violence is so prevalent in India but not so in China. As context we must view the social structure of the said countries. Much has been said about the caste system in India as opposed to an egalitarian society. Beginning in early childhood customs, traditions & social mores are instilled in a person's mind, verbally & non-verbally. The process is called socialization.
By early teen years, attitudes thus formed are set & very difficult to alter. The individuals's attitude towards parents, the opposite sex & the wider world is pretty much ingrained/internalized. I've also read some of the things Jayant Bhandari said & he's got native knowledge of these issues. The corruption & immorality is so ingrained that a victim feels it's pointless to report it. He added that she'll most likely get raped at the police station as well.
Any institutional changes? It would require societal changes & reengineering of social mores, norms of behavior & morality shift. At the present moment it doesn't seem likely in the Indian context. In the Chinese context the Taoist & Confuciusnic ethos has greatly influenced the people's psyche & therefrom the society itself. Shifts & changes have been evident since 1949 to reshape the social structures & people's lives, though not all had the desired positive effects. There were disasters too.
Hopefully, from my sociological 2-cents worth, some readers do get an understanding of social factors in this unfortunate situation.

Well, India has had a female president - China NEVER. So it's the men who seem to "hold up the sky" there, and Mao killed 80 million - presumably half were women. So you may as well be quoting Hitler - no sane foreigner is impressed with Mao quotes. In China there are too few women because female babies get aborted - not so in India. I am not Indian - I'm white, but I have spent 18 months there (total), and the Indian police (who you mention) are very fair towards foreigners, for them to arrest a foreigner and process them into the legal system, a foreigner would have to have done something really stupid or genuinely criminal, with ample evidence. In China foreigners have to be fearful of the police, you can get harassed and arrested by them just over some false stupid accusation, and easily end up in a cell, in a legal system where the verdict is 99% guilty - not so in India. I feel safe in India - for all its faults at least there's no communist oppression and there's free speech.

Being an Indian myself, I always tell my Japanese girlfriend never to come to India, let alone by herself. I believe the rape problem in India has a lot to do with lack of education and development and crime rate in the North of India. Most of the men who rape are from lower economic backgrounds with lack of education influenced by media online and work jobs like labour. There will be rows of men like this just standing/sitting on the sidewalk, gawking at anything and everything shamelessly. If you still decide you travel here, avoid the North and look into the NorthEast and South of India for a safer experience.

At one point, either in the '90s or the early 2000s, Bollywood's biggest star got kidnapped by a notorious bandit (sorry I don't have the names) and this was the catalyst that finally stirred the call for security action against the bandits. Prior to that, India just went after low hanging fruit.
Additionally, after the 1960s and '70s, with groups like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones going to India for ...ahem spiritual enlightenment, a lot of European youth and young adults would go to get buzzed. Local criminals saw these were soft and wealthy targets, and many kids never survived their trip. Authorities would just go through some motions and ignore feckless foreign diplomats. The internet wasn't so widespread then, whereas that bus attack back in 2010s and this tourist attack became viral online news.

      @user-gc5cy5js5z 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

As a Chinese, I completely agree. It's not arrogance. Looking back at the 5000 year history, we Chinese people have long been in a civil war, and from the scale of 5000 years, aggression is rare. Most of the time, we are fighting against our fellow countrymen, so please do not ignore the fighting power of our nation. If we are forced to the point of despair, we will erupt into astonishing combat power. It is this characteristic that enables us to defeat the Japanese. So it's not that we're not good at combat, but that we don't like the use of force.
The viewpoint that "having a sword in hand and not using it is different from not having a sword in hand" is rooted in the hearts of the Chinese people. We believe that for our own safety, combat experience and advanced weapons are necessary, but we will not actively use them. But without these, we would be in a dangerous situation.
So what we advocate is having powerful force and weapons, but not taking the initiative to attack. Instead, we reason with others and gain their respect by respecting them.
If you learn Chinese martial arts, your master may tell you that learning martial arts is not to provoke disputes and bully others, but to be safe and respected by others, which is the essence of Chinese culture.

That is why it makes me laugh when India said they will exceed China. They need to resolve a couple of basic fundamentals before they are even qualified to compete with China, anyone been to China and India would agree with me:
    India:
    1. Water - You can get Diarrhea just by using their tap water to rinse your mouth - that's how dirty their system is
    2. Women are not safe in India - that does not need me to explain
    3. The rich is extremely rich in India, will dwarf the high end British; but the poor are extremely poor, often not even enough food to feed them (that will never happen in China since 2010)
    4. Sanitation - many young girls have to take a dump in public area or very disgusting public toilets (China used to be bad, after years of complaining, they finally fixed the public toilet problems - I'd say over the past 5 years, I see massive improvement, at least the govt in China is making an effort)
    5. Medicals, this is self-explained. China needs more improvement, but India cannot even catch up

The caste system in India adds to the usual reasons of education, economic opportunity etc. The lower caste men feel oppressed for generations (and yes upper caste men have raped women from the lower castes for centuries) and the upper caste men, who were brought up thinking lower caste people are there to serve their every whim and fancy now feel left out. As reservation, (India's version of affirmative action) has put some lower caste people ahead economically through education, these upper caste men feel left out and lash out at anything they see as the 'other'. That includes religious minorities- Muslims, Christians and foreigners. And the present government turns a blind eye to any polarization that will help them electorally.

You are the first blogger I have seen recently to compare these two countries together. The couple's situation has also received high attention in China, and we are all surprised why this happened because in our opinion, it is absolutely unacceptable.
As a Chinese, I have summarized several major reasons why our society is safer:
    1. Education: 9 years of free education, allowing the majority of people to receive education, with education and quality to distinguish right from wrong
    2. Culture: In Chinese culture, it emphasizes respecting the elderly, children, and women, as well as being aware of shame. It is very clear what is right and what is wrong
    3. Surveillance cameras: Many people use this to attack us, saying that we are not free here, but absolute freedom can lead to absolute chaos. There is no perfect thing in the world, and if you get this, you will lose that, right? Because of this, even if I walk on the path in the middle of the night, I won't feel unsafe
(By the way, London has the most surveillance cameras in the world)
    4. Government: Because our government places great emphasis on safety, we have put in a lot of effort in this area. Crimes such as drugs, firearms, pornography, rape, and assault have all been strongly cracked down upon and strictly restricted.
I still remember 10 years ago when my hometown was very chaotic, with young people riding motorcycles to rob and thieves entering the house to steal. However, it didn't take long for this situation to improve significantly. Now, those things are far away from us, and I can't even remember the feeling of insecurity.
But I still have to take responsibility to say that every society has good and bad people. Even in China, please pay attention to your personal safety. Although the probability of encountering criminal behavior is very small, it is not zero.
As a country that has developed alongside us, India is also a neighbor that we cannot move away from. As a Chinese, I also hope that India can become better. Although they are hostile towards us, I sincerely wish the people of India a better and safer life.
I have my own opinion on why so many rapes have occurred in India, but due to space limitations, I will not comment too much.

As a foreigner - the greatest threat to my security and peace of mind, in China is the police. In India the police are very easy on foreigners, for a foreigner, to get dragged off by the police and put through their legal system, that individual would have had to have done something incredibly stupid or very criminal, with ample evidence, then in the court system there is a high percentage of not-guilty verdicts, and English is the 2nd language. The Indian police do not consider a casual accusation against a foreigner as evidence. In China - if a local points the accusing finger at you - you're in serious trouble. The police won't understand any English, they will always accept the accusing words of the locals, and once in the legal system, there's a 99% guilty verdict. In India, as a foreigner, if you're in police hands, unless you've done something crazy, you can laugh about it, and quickly sort matters out - in China you are totally screwed. ALSO In China, with its strict censorship, and paranoid government - you have to be careful of what you say, - not so in India. In India if you tell them "your government is terrible" they'll probably laugh and agree - in China, you've just committed a crime. This makes India a better place.

What happened is truly shameful. Millions and millions of people protested against it in India. I saw the interview of print. It is very clear that after interviewing hundreds of people, the worst clips were selected to make that video. Print hates India more than the BBC news channel. India definitely needs improvement in women's protection. But is India really as vulnerable to women as it is portrayed in the media? In Rape Rate Ranking, the US ranks 13th with 27.31 rape cases per 100K, the UK ranks 14th with 27.29, France ranks 27th with 16.19, South Korea ranks 30th with 13.50, and Germany ranks 42nd with 9.38. India ranks 95th with 1.81 rape cases per 100K. Undoubtedly, America and the UK are very unsafe countries for women compared to India. But the news media and some TH-camrs love to give India the title of an unsafe country. I couldn't find any data on how safe China is. Since there is no democracy in China, only government people have the right to commit a crime. For example, a Chinese tennis player(peng shuai) disappeared after accusing an ex-vice premier of China (Jung Gao Lean) of sexual assault.

" Millions and millions of people protested against it in India" - yes because people can protest in India - unlike China. And this was widely reported in India - whereas nothing bad about China is ever reported in China. This makes India the better country.

Sorry, but you don't know the cultural differences, Indian men has always been seen as superior, if you talk about feudalism, today India is more feudalistic than China today. Don't talk about tourist, I have come across many cases repeated forced unconsented sexual cases even within Indian women who goes out working if they are allowed to. The Indian govt is very corrupt, you have a sexual offence? If you are able to pay, you get scotch free.
However, if you look at China today, there are ways of raising justice without shaming yourself, non-corrupt officers who would help. And the laws are strict. You should also come to Singapore to take a look, China's laws had been modeled after Singapore.

Respect goes so deep for women in Chinese culture that it percolates through modern day videos and dramas. It’s so hilarious to us but probably goes over the heads of westerners. They probably think that the men in those dramas are hen pecked weaklings. We all know it to be so true that our fathers may act as if they are the head of the household outside, but at home they tiptoed around just as I do and many of my male friends do.
The fake respect western woke ideology isn’t respect at all and instead it’s disdain and hatred for the opposite sex.

Yeah they love females so much that between 1980-2015, 30% of female babies were ABORTED because they didn't want girls. So what other BS do you wish to share with us? That China is a free society perhaps? What's next?

They aspired to be a world superpower, yet a substantial segment of their population is still uncivilized and their infrastructure is anything but wanting. But they should first work on their basic foundation and start teaching their people morality, ethics and respect. And better still, teach them the law of cause and effect as taught by their most famous guru, Lord Buddha.
