He performed Unchained Melody on the ‘Andy Williams Show’ in 1965. It was a prime time family variety television show and the audience was instructed to remain respectful during the performance.
Back in the day we went to concerts to HEAR the ARTIST sing, play, etc. No yelling, shouting, etc. I saw the Righteous Bros. in 1978. Wonderful performance.
And.....live! I'm a singer. This is absolutely BEYOND amazing. His rendition of Summertime is off the charts! The places he took his voice were mesmerizing!
I can tell you probably why the audience was silent during Unchained Melody. It's because the way Bobby sings that song, it gives me, and a lot of women, chills, because it is so beautiful and emotional. I honestly get tears in my eyes every time I hear him sing it! It touches my soul.
My Prayer is from the show "Shindig" Summertime is from a Special Tv1965 and the Unchained Melody was live on The Andy Williams Show. Bobby was one great singer and comical and what a vocal range he had unbelievable.
God's gift to us. And we are so darn thankful. His burdens were heavy, nevertheless he left us unbelievable music and a precious smile. RIP Bòɓbÿ. We love you.
I'll say it again. Not bad for a 24 year old kid, eh? I love that "Bobby Smile!" See what I mean? All Bobby had to do was hold a mic and sing. A whole world of women fell in love!
Unchained Melody was recorded live on the Andy Williams Variety show. And this rendition of My Prayer was performed on Shindig, a weekly television show that the Righteous Brothers regularly appeared on. This show was televised in black and white. These shows were popular in the 60's. I grew up in that era and let me tell you that the girls were gaga over these young boys, myself included. Miss watching them and that time.
Bobby's 1965 version of Unchained Melody was done on the Andy Williams TV show. This is the first time Bobby sang the song with his upper head voice. The record version is different. Hence, the TV audience, live, didn't move or scream. We all had respect to listen to the singer. The Prayer was done on Shindig, another weekly ABC TV show.
Unchained Melody was sung by Bobby on the Andy Williams Show on TV. The audience was probably older. People didn’t jump up and applaud in a studio audience in the 60s.
The performance yr referring to was Bobby singing U. Melody on the Andy Williams variety show with a reserved audience. This was probably on Shindig or Hullabaloo two competing music shows aimed at teens mid to late 60s. To me both shoes were great, sure miss those days.
For the Andy Williams Show the live tv audience was instructed to be as quiet and still as possible, and save applause for the end. For Shindig, the audience could cheer and clap, and did! I was an audience member for a different episode, and remember what we were told about that.
Chad, If you really want to see Bobby slide his feet and dance, watch MyBabe from the 65Special before he sings Summertime, he was so Talented, never heard a prettier voice and great singer!
I could watch this 20 times a day and not get tired of it. The control Bobby had on his voice was incredible. Bobby was incredible! Besides being incredibly handsome, he had more talent than Heaven should allow.
It was early TV days with Unchained, it was Andy Williams show and more controlled. My Prayer was from Shindig, a pop show for teens. It made a difference who the show was aimed at.
I was in college at the time and I can tell you the difference in audience behavior arrived with the Beatles. We loved the Beatles too but most of considered the audience disrespectful.
Since you made this video 2 yrs. ago, it might be too late to comment, but you were wondering where Bobby Hatfield sang the version of “ Unchained Melody “ you watched. He sang it on the Andy Williams Show (a variety show), so, because they were recording the show live, I’m sure they asked the audience to hold their applause till the end. Note: his mother was in the audience for the first time and he also had a head cold. Wow! You sure couldn’t tell it! Also, Andy Williams first sang with his brothers and later went solo. He also had a very beautiful crooner’s voice. He was the one who made “Moon River” famous. If you haven’t heard that you really need to listen to it.
Hi Chad - great review. I will subscribe right now. I am in my 70s and remember all this great music, long before the days of auto-tune. I thank you for bringing this music and talent to the attention of younger people, and people with less range of experience.
I so enjoy your participation, opinions, and pure bliss as you get to know, hear, and play these stunning "Brothers". I had never heard Bobby sing this song "Summertime", and as usual, Bobby never fails to blow me away. Thank you for playing these different songs that Bobby slayed, and dammit, unbelievably I had never heard him cover. I should have searched a lot more for songs that the RB recorded, I have adored and worshipped those "Brothers", wishing that I had been old enough to have been able to see them perform in person when they had those righteous hits "Unchained Melody" "You've Lost That Loving Feeling"...There is a song that they do as a duo called "Hung On You" ...wow wow wow, it's deep and the epitome of a one sided love and the heartache knowing that it'll always be a one sided love...🎵🎶Ohhh Baby why did I have to get so hung on you...🎶🎵 *Intentionally spaced for the pauses in drawing out the song's dramatic broken hearted angst...
Unchained Melody was from The Andy Williams Show, which was more for adults with the occasional teen oriented guests. My Prayer was from the teen oriented show Shindig. The studio audiences for Shindig were mostly teens and it wasn't unusual for the teeny boppers (as we were called then) to scream for their favorites, especially cute guys like Bobby. Bobby and Bill were semi-regulars on Shindig for a couple of years and were fan faves. It's a shame there aren't more live clips of Bobby raving as he does with Summertime. You should check out Something's Got a Hold on Me, a kind of bluesy ballad by Bobby, unfortunately not live. Also, I Need Your Loving Everyday with both guys, also from Shindig.
The adult audience on the Andy Williams show was asked to refrain from making noise and interrupting a performance & save their applause until the song was done. The Shindig TV show was meant for the young crowd to watch & they could be in the audience and let loose. At times the screaming covered up the vocals.
I want to know why the sentence, "You don't know how much I love these guys" was blocked out. We ALL love Bobby . And Bill. It's obvious to me that you really love their voices. Especially Bobby's. Yes, Bobby is mostly everyone's favorite. And what's wrong with that?? Love you, love your show! And oh, that "Bobby Smile!" It lights up the whole world!
_I'm glad you enjoy my content! The Righteous Bros are exceptional! Refer to an email I sent explaining an editing mistake on my video. Thanks for watching!_
In response to your question, the performance that appeared 'subdued' was taken from the Andy Williams Show; the audience would have been much more reserved due to the fact that they knew the show would soon appear nationally (and internationally), as opposed to this being what appeared to be an actual concert audience.
Andy Williams show 1965. I was 22 when that show was aired. Had I been in that audience I would have stood up an d cheered. As for "My Prayer," he's beautiful. The show was either Shindig or Hullabaloo, with lots of screaming girls. And I knew you'd love "Summertime." I was one of those who suggested it. Thank you. Isn't he "The living end? as we girls used to say.
That Unchained Melody was aired on TV on an episode of the Andy Williams show. The audience was allowed to applaud only when the applaud light came on.
I believe that in "Unchained Melody" the audience was told to reserve applause until after the performance, because it was a live taping. Most other live shows the audience went crazy.
Two different TV shows and the Andy Williams Show (Unchained Melody), I believe the song My Prayer was on Shindig, and Summertime may have been the Ed Sullivan Show. The Shindig was a teen show, where as the others were more stylized and buttoned up in the production of the times with somewhat older audiences.
Of course, Bobby Hatfield continues to show the many different facets to his unmatched talent. First, My Prayer that would make not only "Teenie Boppers" scream and faint, but would make even the more mature ladies swoon !!!!! Summertime, being such a different type of song altogether, would make most want to move to the beat and we would be amazed at the soulful and jazzy sound--something we may not have associated with the Great Bobby Hatfield. Thanks for both performances. Cheryl's Mom, Cathy
They were both on TV shows, Unchained Melody was on Andy Williams show and was for families and older people, the other was on a show for teenagers. All live TV shows get instructions on how to behave, when to clap etc.
Listen to the Ink Spots version of My Prayer. The audience for Unchanged Melody was controlled and cautioned not to stand or applaud noisily. This was common for TV audiences at time. Listen to the Platters version of My Prayer too. Listen to Janis Joplins version of Summertime---a lot of influence from Bobby's treatment of it!
The Righteos Brothers would at sing at small get together before they got famous. Once they played a really good bluesy song and someone jumped up and said "that's righteos brother " and they were. They were basically the very first of the blue eyed soul era.
Bobby was so underrated. A suggestion from left field. John Farnham. UK born but Aussie as. You're the Voice, Burn for you....my personal favourite...Please don't ask me. His voice is something else again.
"My Prayer". That is why I suggested you hear "If I Ruled the World." The "Summertime" pre song exchange...They are both adorable. One they did on this same show was "My Babe," you would get a kick out of it. Please do this one just for fun. Bobby at his best drawing Bill into his antics. Bill was such a good sport.
One song Bobby recorded while split from Bill, was called "Run To My Lovin' Arms." On the same CD as "Stay With Me." Ringo was drummer in "Stay." But "Lovin' Arms" is a very beautiful song. None of the songs from The Richard Perry Sessions got much promotion. I know you have lots to go through, but maybe you could get to it sometime. Bobby was the greatest singer that ever lived. And this song is one that should be heard. Bobby was unbelievable. Nobody could wail like Bobby Lee Hatfield!
Dawnaberry Run to My Loving Arms is one of my favorites by Bobby! He was so under appreciated! It' very sad. He deserved a lot better than he got! Thought it was cool that Ringo was playing the drums on that song.
Hi, Chad. Thank you for this, two of my favorites. Love you, love your show. Ain't he the livin' end? as we used to say when I was a teen. Long time ago!
Sometimes during performances that are Beyond description the audience just sits and listens. You can see this happen on The Voice America's Got Talent Britain's Got Talent where the performer is so Dynamic that the audience is quiet. I think Unchained Melody definitely has that quality of putting the audience in total awe. In awe of the performance by Bobby in awe of the message of the song. I don't think the prayer had the same Dynamics that Unchained Melody had. I also read in one of the other comments that the differences between the audiences and I believe that too is very much a factor. I think summertime showed his vocal prowess better than the prayer. And if you notice the audience was not screaming during the performance. Pause the moment when his vocals just transfixed the audience. IMHO.
All Bobby had to do was stand there, hold the mic and sing, thus mesmerizing a whole nation of women. [and I'm sure some men] I have been in love with him since 1962. I was 20.
My Prayer was performed on the tv show Shindig and Unchained Melody was performed on The Andy Williams Show. Each tv show had their own way of doing things.
Chad I thought you would appreciate this video link. It's of Bobby's wedding in 1979 and they sang My babe. th-cam.com/video/1JKiMP51iPM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=L22H7gse4CZyLqOR
Watching the Shindig show where Bobby was singing "My Prayer," is where I was first introduced to the Righteous Brothers and I became a big fan...Bobby being my favorite!! What a voice he had. Love this song. Of course, Bobby killed it on "Summertime!" I could listen to him sing all day. Thanks for reacting to both of these songs and sharing them with us. I look forward to the next...
I am loving your videos of the Righteous Brothers… such memories. Yes I’m a ‘boomer’. Please put up some of Bill’s solos too. One that no one seems to be familiar with is a terrific blues song“I’m no Angel” and anther one is his cover of “l’m gonna be Strong”. Their earlier work was hard rock like ‘Little Latin Lupe Lu’ and ‘Justine’ and worth a comment too…
The Andy Williams Show was a highly rated TV show. I don't think they allowed any screaming while they recorded the show. It was expensive to produce and had high standards. Andy was a great singer and hosted many top stars of the era.
Thank you for your very honest and passionate reactions! Listen to Bill and Barbies, you’ve lost that loving feeling, you’ll never walk alone, and they are very R&B. I just want to make love to you. Each of these songs are just as great and have just as much class!
Check out, if you haven't already, Disturbed version of Sound of Silence on late night Conan ~ 6 yrs ago. The audience sat quietly till the end of the performance and then the appreciation of the performance resounded in the studio.
I think I have figured out a bit of lyric., where at almost the end, I think it was "Don't cry . Bobby Lee standin' by." Took me a long time to figure out, now to work on the rest.
The Platers sing this song beautifully.....but Bobby takes the cake......also check out Ebb Tide.....Bobby kills that one too... my favorite version......only other person I've heard sing Summertime time is Sam Cooke.....Bobby has alot of Soul......
Andy always asked guests to refrain from clapping, etc only as they were introduced and until the end, unless he himself would ask them to participate. Like in their what I’d say gig th-cam.com/video/KGClv9GKYmo/w-d-xo.html
The difference is mature audience vs. teenage girls with raging hormones. I just have one more suggestion for you. A song called "If I Ruled the World by Bobby. Listen to it alone. Close your eyes and marvel that such a voice exists.
I grew up in the decades when many great singers dazzled the charts. Bobby was one of the best. Sad music today is lost its way.
He performed Unchained Melody on the ‘Andy Williams Show’ in 1965. It was a prime time family variety television show and the audience was instructed to remain respectful during the performance.
Sheer talent; Bobby FELT his music and he made sure you felt it too.
Back in the day we went to concerts to HEAR the ARTIST sing, play, etc. No yelling, shouting, etc. I saw the Righteous Bros. in 1978. Wonderful performance.
Everything Bobby Hatfield sings is magic
Unbelievable. They will never ever be another like his, impossible.
And.....live! I'm a singer. This is absolutely BEYOND amazing. His rendition of Summertime is off the charts! The places he took his voice were mesmerizing!

Love unchained melody
My wife loves the song and I always sing it to her 30 years later 😊
Bobby slayed that song.Wow.
Outstanding performance, love it.❤
My Prayer is from the show "Shindig" Summertime is from a Special Tv1965 and the Unchained Melody was live on The Andy Williams Show. Bobby was one great singer and comical and what a vocal range he had unbelievable.
Honestly Bobby Hatfield was my first crush ever. His voice was just so amazing and beautiful. Thank you for playing his music ❤❤❤
I never get tired of this. I just shake my head, and marvel that such talent ever existed. And never will again. Bobby was one in a trillion!
God's gift to us. And we are so darn thankful. His burdens were heavy, nevertheless he left us unbelievable music and a precious smile. RIP Bòɓbÿ. We love you.
I never tire of Bobby Hatfield. Greatest tenor ever.
He was such a talent, a voice like no other, and what a comedic sense of humor!
Thank you so much for doing this. He didn’t get enough recognition when he was alive. Amazing voice. I don’t think you will see another like him.
20 yrs since his passing and still not another like him!
I think it was the location that effected the crowds response for sure.
Best in the world
You are so correct, that there will never be another Bobby Hatfield. I am so grateful to be old enough to remember him & Bill.
I'll say it again. Not bad for a 24 year old kid, eh? I love that "Bobby Smile!" See what I mean? All Bobby had to do was hold a mic and sing. A whole world of women fell in love!

Bobby Hatfield bringing it, and bringing it HARD. I absolutely love this arrangement of "Summertime." Great reaction, once again, Chad.
Chad, If you really want to see Bobby slide his feet and dance, watch MyBabe from the 65Special before he sings Summertime, he was so Talented, never heard a prettier voice and great singer!

The amazing Bobby Hatfield. What a voice. What a legend.
Yes, he IS a legend. And very modest. In one interview he said that he never thought of himself as a legend, but he always considered Bill a legend.
Unchained melody was performed on the Andy Williams TV show. So all of that was controlled for the production on TV.
I am 71 years old and still love their music
They were known as blue eyed soul singers! Brilliant

The show he sang Unchained Melody was on the Andy williams show.
Unchanged Melody was filmed on a big network TV show and I sure they were told not to interrupt the song and wait until it was over to applaud him.
Beautiful
In response to your question, the performance that appeared 'subdued' was taken from the Andy Williams Show; the audience would have been much more reserved due to the fact that they knew the show would soon appear nationally (and internationally), as opposed to this being what appeared to be an actual concert audience.

It was on the Andy Williams show they clapped at the beginning of the song Unchained Melody and it was live T.V.
That Unchained Melody was aired on TV on an episode of the Andy Williams show. The audience was allowed to applaud only when the applaud light came on.
First time i heard BT sing Summertime; and WOW, WOW, WOW. Thanks Chad.

A good demonstration of Bobby's unique ability to sing any kind of music, and do it better than anyone else. Bobby was one in a trillion.
They were both on TV shows, Unchained Melody was on Andy Williams show and was for families and older people, the other was on a show for teenagers. All live TV shows get instructions on how to behave, when to clap etc.
I would be screaming, too.
Beautiful! I soo miss him.
Rest in peace, precious Bobby.
Most of these were on tv shows at the time
They screamed for Elvis And the Beatles too.
I enjoyed watching you as much as watching him sing. Great reaction.
Unchained Melody was on the AndyvWilliams show. That's how it was..the venue...
That live version of inchained melody was on the Andy Williams variety show. The audience was requested to be respectful
That was great, loved Summer Time. Enjoying the musical journey with you Chad. Thanks for featuring these two gems.
The guy could sing
Listen to the Ink Spots version of My Prayer. The audience for Unchanged Melody was controlled and cautioned not to stand or applaud noisily. This was common for TV audiences at time. LOVED that "brotherly" intro, too! 😂
Thanks, Chad 😊

Why was Bobby split from Bill?
I found the answer recently
Dawnaberry Run to My Loving Arms is one of my favorites by Bobby! He was so under appreciated! It' very sad. He deserved a lot better than he got! Thought it was cool that Ringo was playing the drums on that song.
Hi, Chad. Thank you for this, two of my favorites. Love you, love your show. Ain't he the livin' end? as we used to say when I was a teen. Long time ago!

My goodness, 2 beautiful songs i never heard before👍👍💕💕 great choice sweetie 🥰🥰

The best. Then there is the rest.
That's the way it used to be in those days. He was on the Andy Williams show.
He could sing the phone book
It was live tv back then. They where told when to clap. Strick rules applied

A tremendous talent singing a beautiful soneg. NO music likke this now a days. What a shame.
Chad, you cut off the very end where Bobby did "Gotcha" on Bill. Very funny!
It was the Andy Williams show you saw Chad where Bobby was on that small podium.
That was a live performance on the Andy Williams SHOW.
Thank you for your very honest and passionate reactions! Listen to Bill and Barbies, you’ve lost that loving feeling, you’ll never walk alone, and they are very R&B. I just want to make love to you. Each of these songs are just as great and have just as much class!
Unchained Melody was on the Andy William's variety show. Very different venue than a concert.
WOW*3 is right!
