These blokes were sterling, absolutely sterling. I will never forget that night. I have pictures and I occasionally view them. Thanks Andy for your music. Long live The Smiths!

Andy was the bassist we all wanted to be, but knew it was impossible, he was so gifted, his basslines were almost untouchable. A beautiful tribute from Mike, he'll be very sadly missed.
Mike and Andy never got 25%. Morrissey refused to pay Mike or Andy what they were owed for decades even for the many years that Morrissey knew Andy had cancer and required costly life prolonging medical treatments in America, presumably without health insurance. Andy wasn’t a party to the final court judgement giving Mike 25% royalties, he had previously made an agreement for a one time sum due to financial difficulties. But even then he wasn’t paid by Morrissey the remainder of royalties he was owed.
I hope Mike knows how unbelievably important he is to millions of Smiths fans. You were the backbone Mike. I’m in my mid fifties heterosexual and if I met you I’d hug you til you’d had enough. You’re up there with the buggies Mike. Maybe even at the top. Cheers from Toronto, Mike
The Reading Hexagon on the Meat is Murder tour is where I first come into contact with Andy and Mike as naive 16 year old. It wasn’t much, just shook hands with them both and they acknowledged me as a fan standing round the back door of the venue. The other two…….. Salt of the earth Mike and Andy. True friendship between them both.
Bass and drum....strong connection within any band. Andy was one of a kind.....it makes me happy to hear all the accolades for this brilliant yet down to earth musician.

Solid words, Mike. I play bass and Andy was my main influence. I play Fender because he did and, when I learned that he played a Yamaha for his more lively parts, I bought a Yamaha. The Smiths are one of those very rare bands that finds a new following every generation and their fans are forever fans. I have never heard anyone say "I can't believe I used to be into The Smiths."
The magic that Andy and Mike created together has a massive massive part on why the Smiths are so great, one of the greatest rhythm sections of all time!

I remember how they seemed so random.. it was tough getting them down.. but it definitely helped build my skills with lead on guitar. Now teaching 20+ years and this is a big part of why.. excellent bass player.. the Smiths were lucky to have him.
I always knew I loved Andy's playing, knew he was one of my favorites. Just before Andy's passing I was playing with some friends and the guy doing sound said, you play great, but maybe a bit too much movement for this song. It was cool, but it got me to thinking, why do I want to move all over. That's when it hit me that Andy was not only one of my favs, but almost certainly the most influential on my style...though I never really realized. About 3 days later I read the news. RIP Andy - and thank you so much! 🙏💙🎸

59. Not old. Rest in Peace and thank you. Random memories of driving around San Diego in my '67 bug listening to "Barbarism begins at home" and all the other songs of the Smiths.
I remember first time hearing Smiths and hearing the jangly 80s guitar, and extremely weird but extremely tight bass, and that's what hooked me more and more. What an amazing bass player, I mean "Well I wonder", the bass makes the mood for the entire track.
I've always said that for decades about "the rhythm section" of The Smiths, absolutely solid and new at the same time. Rourke and Joyce don't get enough credit, and the Smiths are truly one of the best bands ever. No on sounded like them in the day and no one still to this day. It's a bummer that Rourke passed so young, but his music with The Smiths will be influential for generations, as it already has been
Mike grew into The Smiths, and his drumming improved considerably, very quickly, during 1983/84 (the recordings of The Smiths’ three Hacienda gigs from 1983 show that rapid improvement). When Andy arrived, however, he was pretty much the finished article from day one, and he gave the group a swing most other indie groups from the time just didn’t have.
From the heart from Mike and it feels like it hasn't sunk in properly with him. These people created and played songs that saved our lives back in the 80s.
Absolutely. 100% agree. The music on the radio back then was terrible and you're right, The Smiths were there for those of us who disliked all that manufactured synth pop. Radio One, Steve Wright in particular, despised The Smiths - hence Hang the DJ

I was very sad to learn he has passed away, much too soon. This is so unfair.

Clearly Andy wrote music for the songs, but he wrote it second after the guitar parts, so people wrongly conclude that doesn’t count as writing the song. With some songs like Barbarism, the guitar could not possibly have come first. Clearly Andy wrote the bass part first. The fact that he didn’t get song writing credits is due to human power / politics / control in the band. Morrissey and Marr formed the band and Andy joined a little later, and for Johnny, ever since then, the Smiths and their music were always his band despite the actual musical contributions and role.

For example David Gilmour playing bass on Pink Floyds 'Sheep (3 different ones)' as Waters couldn't quite get it right himself. But I totally agree with you about power / politics / control.

The even more amazing thing about Andy is that he did EVERY one of those Smiths basslines by the time he was 23.
mike and andy were certainly not interchangeable components to this band. they gave the sound it's immediacy.
