Yes I agree, but in my opinion they also created music that was so different at the time of mainstream, if you remember what music was like then most of the artists followed each other’s lead and music sounded to much of the same, The smiths introduced a new style of music and the singing was so amazing that Morrissey’s voice was indeed like an instrument, I appreciated the fact that they were also so honest about how they felt about politics and commercial music. In my opinion they are one of the greatest bands and impossible for any other musician to duplicate.
Well, only Marr can play The Smiths 'type' music. I think it was Morrissey's way of writing lyrics that was the major paradigm in their songs. His dark humour and wit is blatantly lost on those without the antenna to 'pick up' on it. His intelligent, informed yearning is also what made Smiths fans 'disciples'. They were completely and utterly unique
Aw, this is lovely. I’m honoured to have met him in a Manchester club randomly. Meet one of your heroes & find that he’s a humble friendly guy. RIP legend
I spotted the French Kiss microphone, then I see that Syd is the uploader. That made me really happy. I found this because of the late great Andy, but there is something nice and reassuring about when artists you like put focus on other artists you like. Like this one. What a sweet encounter. RIP Andy, and thanks for making indie bass players step up their game forever. And thank you Lyla and Syd.
I only vaguely caught the end of the conversation on the radio talking about him, I thought it was just a random conversation so missed the news and only just heard about it today. Absolutely gutted big part of my bass playing in my younger years, so very sad. RIP Andy I hope you knew how much you meant to so many bass players over the years, we adored you x
My partners friend back in the day. Family home just around the corner from us. Partner took a walk there when andy passed and said no flowers etc had been left outside. Maybe new people live there. Partners going to see if he can arrange for a blue plaque to be put on the house's frontage. Rip andy.
Makes sense why I’ve fallen in love with the Smiths so much later in life.....the stones and The Who were/are my favorite bands, and both Marr and Rourke have given much needed credit to Pete Townshend and Bill Wyman (here) respectively. Andy Rourke is one of the most criminally underrated bass players in history.
Andy Rourke loved the longevity of Rolling Stones. Can you imagine if The Smiths had never broken up and had that same longevity? How wonderful would that be? The world as we know it would be a different place for the better had that happened. In many ways.
You will be missed forever Andy!! We all love you!!!
The news today is terrible, this interview made me smile though, what a nice dude. RIP Andy
IKR!!!
Wished he could go back to age 11… the age when he met Johnny Marr 😢❤
Awww you can tell with that last question he misses playing with The Smiths :( RIP Andy.
The Smiths, one of the most important bands in history. They changed the way music was played
And changed lives.

His soul is immortalized through his basslines. I always admired this bass player, but he always seemed to be overlooked by others. RIP.

Loved that. Great questions and answers. RIP Andy x
When people say that Andy was an underrated bass player is because they didn't bother to listen his killer bass lines
RIP Andy, miss you!!

Are you from USA; as in UK he wasn't under-rated at all.
Hahaha great interview its so funny
I always guessed Stanley Clark would be an inspiration ..Andy Rourke is the best bassist on the planet in my pov
Amo esse cara e suas magníficas linhas de baixo
Muito subestimado e esquecido, ele merecia muito mais atenção, o cara era muito inteligente
Andy you should do a follow up interview, this one was very entertaining
