Originally, I wanted it for its emulation potential, and it's not only lived up to my needs and expectations, it's blown it out of the park, and the fact that I can play my Steam library on the go, especially when waiting in the long line to pick my kid up from school every day, it's been an absolute blast. My wife thinks it's super cool, too.

Do you have any issues with your cloud saves? I remember a while back seeing a review were there were some issues where you'd have to manually turn cloud saving on and off at your PC if you were offline often. Wondering what it's like now.
@@johnperez4628 no not really. I can play the Game on the go. Come home. Play on my PC. I will get asked if i want to go with the local save or with the Deck Cloud save and vice versa
Literally within less than 24 hours after my steam deck arrived I went on a flight from DC to Denver to spend time with my ex. It was so fun and great to toy with while traveling! And last year I ended up going on tour and brought it with me and it was cool! (Actually got more use out of my switch while on tour bc I did multiplayer games with the ppl I toured with) Overall, steam deck is great for travel, not surprising to me seeing it's made for games on the go Also I found a nice low key case I ended up using pretty soon after I got it, it has a magnetic cover to protect the front of it. I forget what it's called sadly
I looked up how it was flying with the Steam Deck since I'll be taking my first flight in a little over a week from Florida to Nebraska and wanted to make sure there weren't going to be any problems regarding possible unforeseen circumstances and it appears that I don't really have anything to worry about! While I do have access to a few more recent and demanding titles (Ghostwire: Tokyo, Steelrising, and One Piece Odyssey to name a few) I'm currently working through a few older titles like Final Fantasy IX, Skies of Arcadia, and Elemental Gimmick Gear. The flight alone is going to be a minimum of seven and a half hours, but I was recently playing the aforementioned Skies of Arcadia without it hooked up to the Steam Dock and I only lost about 20 to 30% of the battery from a full charge after a 5 or so hours, so I should be golden on that front in case I accidentally forget my charger, somehow. That said, thanks for the info~
I REALLY went all in on trying to get this thing ready for a 5 hour flight coming up. Not only do I have tons of games installed, but using a DeckMate I have made a battery mounting system, that is able to mount a 20,000mah battery to the back. This should help keep the deck alive all throughout the flight, but just in case, I am bringing a second battery. So long as I can rest it on the tray table I think this is going to be a fun trip. PS the reason I am trying so hard to keep the deck alive for the Whole flight is... well I hate flying, and the less I can be focused on the fact we are in a pressurized tube 40 something thousand feet in the air, the better I will feel.
Great video! Going on 6 flights over the next few weeks, two will be over 8 hours. Love the Steam Deck, got around 15 games that I tested will work offline for the flight. Only problem I have is the battery, for some reason it doesn't last as long as other people mention and I only get around an hour and half until its done while on a fairly resourceful game. I'm bringing an extra power bank and should get 2-3 extra full charges so hoping it works out fine🤞
My first travel experience went great. Got about an hour in on the flight. I had the same epiphany that I was playing Red Dead 2 on an freaking airplane. Then it paid for itself on the way on a road trip from Phoenix to Las Vegas.
A few points on the case: 1. It's not free if it came with something you paid for, this applies to anything. 2. It's not tamper proof, it's lazy proof someone with a ballpoint pen could just undo the zipper on it Other than that the steam deck is amazing and exactly what I've been wanting over the years. Bravo valve!
Going to Tokyo tomorrow. Bringing the controllers to play with my sis and just put it down on the tray table. I do not think the planes I go with have more than 10-15w charge so bringing a 20k mAh power bank.
I fricken love my SD. The strap on the back is better if you put the charger in it's bag then behind the strap. My only complaint is more storage, more, more, more. I think the SD's size/weight is just fine although I agree with holding it up to yer face for long periods isn't comfortable. Made in 73 I have seen it all from PONG to this, and what a wild ride it's been. I'm still in awe booting up Elden Ring or FC5, ATS, The Hunter COTW or anything else anywhere I want. Seriously spoiled for choice now with new titles and a back log of classics it's always easy to find a little time on the Deck but not my rig. It has changed gaming for me big time. My rig is now just a Flight Sim rig at this point.

Love the review. I'm waiting for mine. It should be here any day now. I do travel 7-10 times per year, so this is one of the reason I'm getting it. Can you explain about changing the wattage to save power? Not familiar with that.
The wattage is in the quick settings. You can limit the amount of watts or power that the computer chip can use. When you do that the battery lasts longer. Limiting the frame rate and screen refresh rate limits the amount of work (therefore) electricity the steam deck needs to perform. And boom longer battery life.
I feel like the steamdeck is too heavy. I returned mine. Glad you mentioned this. Picking up a logotech handheld for retro gaming. Switch lite is also a great option. I am waiting for a new lighter version of the deck.
I don’t think it’s too heavy but it’s not light. If you don’t have a steam library to play and are only emulating that should be fine. Streaming games still has too noticeable of input latency for me. I’m too spoiled with gaming monitors gaming PC’s. Haha. But emulating I’m down with.

Hi bro, love the vids, will I be able to run a vpn on my steamdeck desktop? And use the browser etc a the same time? Also, can I plug into a 4k UHD monitor?
Hey thanks for the compliment and watching the video!! Yes you can run a VPN but there may be a little effort because of the version of Linux it runs. Google it and find the Reddit. The Custom SOC/APU can definitely run a 4k monitor in desktop mode. You just cant game any higher than 800P on heavy games still though. Now easy to run games you may be able to run them at 1080. So 15w is the standard maximum the steam deck runs at. So don’t ever use the TDP setting unless you go down lower. I recommend if you use older or lightweight titles and you want to save battery go down to 10watts and limit the FPS to 30. Otherwise if you want to run 15 watts or full power switch the TDP button off.

Really good video, but I have a question, does Valve plan on making it where I can buy a Steam Deck without having to purchase a reservation and wait really long?
The reservation thing was for preorder. Thanks to supply chain shortages and so on that process stuck for over a year now because they couldn’t make them fast enough to catch up with demand. The are supposed to be like a normal purchase online and get it shipped quick. They’re catching up.
Nice video! How did you deal with the lack of internet? I see games need internet connection atleast at the start. Did you start the game on wifi and then just put it to sleep after each session? Is it possible to switch between multiple games while flying?
It’s hot or miss. My EA game I brought on the plane I just couldn’t play. Some games I was able to put it in “offline mode” and it works. Hit or miss. It really annoyed me when games have to have internet and a 3rd party DRM.
Games that need constant internet to connect like Dark souls and Elden ring you can go offline mode. Those work. They kick you out if you put the device to sleep. I can’t think of others but that’s my best and only idea to try.
Just remember, it doesn't end when you get comfortable. Steam Deck is all about customization! When you dont feel the burn any more it's time to strap on that 5 lb battery charger to the back! STEAM DECK SWOL!!!

The reservation thing was for preorder. Thanks to supply chain shortages and so on that process stuck for over a year now because they couldn’t make them fast enough to catch up with demand. The are supposed to be like a normal purchase online and get it shipped quick. They’re catching up.
Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching.
@@notquitenerdy agreed. My sports games or GTA V doesn’t seem to start without internet. So what games were you able to launch from offline mode?
Games that need constant internet to connect like Dark souls and Elden ring you can go offline mode. Those work. They kick you out if you put the device to sleep. I can’t think of others but that’s my best and only idea to try.
You gotta work on your arms son! Time to get SWOL, STEAM DECK SWOL!!!
Lmao
Just remember, it doesn't end when you get comfortable. Steam Deck is all about customization! When you dont feel the burn any more it's time to strap on that 5 lb battery charger to the back! STEAM DECK SWOL!!!
Not a criticism at all but finding all these videos about steam deck on planes but not on trains or buses, it seems americans see traval = on planes
lol. Everything is far here and everyone drives cars. So if it’s more than a car ride we just fly. It takes a full day to drive through some states.
From personal experience, it's huge, heavy and kind of a waste without a battery bank with fast Charge capability. And even still, I wanna take it...portable Uncharted 4? R u serious?
I want all the first 3 Uncharted games to come to SD/Pc. Would be Amazon on steam deck!!
@@notquitenerdy I bought mine with the strict idea of it being my Not-Switch and a portable PS4. Turns out it's a portable PS5 and XBSX. Dream come true for an on the go portable nerd like me.
even without a batt bank you can squeeze 4-5 hours out of old games like dead space1
@@user-yk1cw8im4h I've hit 6.5 on some Pixel-art games like Vampire Survivors and Dead Cells. But you have to set it into Offline Mode and disable the wifi. It's a fabulous machine, but it does have some quirks and frequently forgets it is supposed to be portable. The offline mode in particular needs some work imho.
Lol ea and their origins launcher which requires you to be connected to the internet left the chat 🤣
Dude they piss me off. Lol
@@notquitenerdy it's ridiculous,Rockstar is just as bad.
@@kellyd1910 You're right. theres no point too. like its in steam so there is already DRM. SO they want to double DRM us. lol. ridiculous.
@@kellyd1910 modern games from them are shit anyway. Old gta, nfs, bf titles were the only good ones, and makes most sense for a handheld in terms of power efficiency.
