Welcome to the SDMR, Deck Dweeb! It has really completely changed how I game, from AAA, to indies, to emulation - and like you said, I've been tearing through my Steam backlog, even if I just try it for a bit. Although I definitely prefer my main PC for FPS games. Plus, all the demos on Steam make it the perfect device to try games when you have 30 minutes to kill - especially upcoming titles. The deck is definitely not pretty! But everyone who hold mine said the same thing… it fits perfect in your hands! The switch is absolutely not comfortable for grownups to hold. And yes the deck is bulky.. but if that means its comfy to hold… I choose bulky every single time

As soon as I found out about the steam deck though and heard the reviews people were giving it, I decided to jump on board. I already had a steam library full of games I enjoy playing, most of which can run on the deck for 4+ hours no issue (my personal favorites are probably Prey and Black Mesa), I have no issue tinkering with games on my own PC to make them work better so messing around with the deck wasn't an issue for me, and I have a fairly long train commute to my workplace that makes having something like the deck to pass time pretty good. I have tried emulation on it, and for classic games it works really well. I would, however, suggest not running emulators for more recent consoles like the switch or even the Wii U, especially breath of the wild (I couldn't get more than 2 hours on that game and it caused the fan to go crazy, you'll get better use out of just straight up owning a switch). Gamecube and Wii games work fine in my experience and can be run for up to 6 hours usually, though I don't own games for most other consoles so I haven't been able to test those, but I hear it generally works pretty well. The other benefit to the fact that the steam deck is basically just a PC is the easy access of modding, it can take a bit to set up depending on if the game has native support but it's pretty nice to have a portable handheld that I can also mod without jailbreaking it first, which I'm not confident in my ability to do.
The whole “it’s barely portable” thing comes from Switch fanboys as well as fanboys of the competing companies’ direct alternatives (Aya Neo, GPD, etc) trying to downplay the Deck, kind of as a responce to a handful of SD fanboys referring to it as a “_______ killer.” It’s just squabbling idiots being squabbling idiots.
@@reaperreaper5098 It's not just switch fanboys. I love my deck but I also think even the switch isn't portable enough. The 3ds and psp used to fit in pockets with a nice case. The steam deck in case will fill 30%-60% of the volume of some of my more favorite bags and backpacks while my switch is 1/3 the size in it's case so it would only take up 10%-20% in the same bags. I think the steam is comfortable has hell in the hand but I would sacrifice that to be able to fit it in some of the same places I can fit a switch. It takes a man to admit they were wrong about something. I've watched countless videos about the Steamdeck and I too had my doubts. So in March of this year, I purchased the 64gb model. I also have a Switch OLED and a RG505. Those two have been sitting just collecting dust. The Steamdeck can do so much more, it can play almost every game you can think of. It has revolutionized handheld gaming, I love it.😀👍👍👍
The Deck is such a power house, last night i was using Discord, listening to TH-cam and Spotify, while playing Resident Evil 4 Remake. All on the Deck itself
The deck as a phenomenon is unavoidable. It's like the iphone in the sense that it's not necessarily original, but it IS the most successful. UNLIKE apple though, Steam has embraced the repair community AND the DIY community. They love seeing their device used in fun new ways and have worked hard to bring the PC gaming experience to their handheld. I worry that The ASUS ROG Ally might disrupt the market in a BAD way, but I think the steam deck is here to stay at least for a while. Outside PC gaming, the deck is also a beast emulation device, which was my #1 use case for it. I mostly play indie titles and old console games on mine. I played most of Tunic (an EXCELLENT award winning Indie,) on the Deck. I am glad you are participating in this one. Despite it's price compared to our more affordable retro gaming devices, it's a VERY good value in the PC gaming space. Similar spec laptops would be the same if not way more. This device was a win for gamers/ consumers I think.
I have a hard time believing that the Ally will compete with the deck for real. Not unless they can get out a low end model at a comparable price to the low end deck. It'll all come down to the price. If it's more expensive, even if it's way better performance, it'll be an 'enthusiast' product rather than a good choice for regular people (which have been KEY to the Deck's success). I'm happy with more competition though, even if it's the higher end offerings competing against each other - bring it on!
8:19 regarding the FSR if the game has FSR its recommended to turn of steam decks FSR, they are Overlaping because not all games Support FSR naturally, but the steam deck does it naturally

Running non-steam games is also a cool feature. Being able to play things like homm4 or diablo4 (when it was battle-net only and not on steam) while taking a poop is just so amazing (and somewhat underrated by the reviewers)
I fell into my steam deck hard and unexpectedly. I got my first handheld to play pokemon about 2 or 3 months ago (rg35xx) and that small taste of handheld threw me down the rabbit hole. After a few months i caved and ordered a steam deck and am absolutely loving it. Since i know you have both consoles im going to beg you since i cant get it to work. How would you feel about a tutorial on transfering save files from the 35xx sd to the steam deck? I can not get my warioland 4 and pokemon unbound saves to transfer to the steam deck for the life of me.
I absolutely love the idea of the Steam deck and for sure am gonna switch to a handheld PC come next gen consoles, I’ve bought and been involved in so much of the Xbox and GOG ecosystem that I’m waiting for the Asus ROG ally and since some MS employees said they’re gonna make a handheld version of Windows to make it more seamless on the handhelds. And also they have the mobile GPU attachment for the TV and you can customize that as you wish.
I just got my 35xx and after loving it for a few months, I caved in on my steam deck. The emulation on deck is amazing! Super Mario 4 for GBA is gorgeous and scales beautifully. Its just a plus how easy it is to blow it up on a monitor or TV and connect my dualshock via Bluetooth and kick the deck up on its case stand. Now to just successfully transfer my saves over if I can ever figure that out haha.
After watching this and a few other videos I went and got a steam deck. It's pretty amazing. Battery life is really good at 10 watts. And it runs fallout 4 at ultra with about 3 + hours of playtime between charges.
"The Steam Deck is ugly." Yeah, but it's ugly in a really nice way. Like a beloved ugly family dog. Yeah, he's not great to look at, but you wouldn't trade him for the world.
My biggest problem with the Deck was that the analogue stick material didn't feel good to me. I always found myself touching the edge of the sticks because the capacitive touch surface was so slippery, but then the edge is very rough that it started to hurt my thumb in the long run. What fixed this issue and made the Deck usable for me was that I bought some thumb grips. They made the sticks very comfortable to use! I bought them from Skull & Co. and I thought that I would lose the capacitivity of the sticks, and sure enough they warn in the shop page that the thumb grips are not capacitive. I don't know what it is, but sometimes it still works through the thumb grip! 😅
7:05 The way I found to bypass that is to force the use of a specific proton compatibility. Then it'll download the windows version of the game via an update. You'll have to play around to find out which version will work (most of the time, just choose experimental)
Love your content. Steam deck is awesome but would love to see some emulation. Maybe something a little different where you can do cloud save between the steam deck and the Retroid pocket 3 plus or something. Have not seen many people do something like that.
Ha, I hear ya! I’m waiting for the next gen Steam Deck, next gen Switch or an Xbox handheld. So fascinating to see how the PC handheld market is growing! 🔥
Looking forward to getting mine, plan on putting my steam library ofc but also getting a retro arch library set up. Seems really nice for gba emulation.
Yo Tech Dweeb how's it hanging? I'm just skateboardin, yeah man have you heard of moonlight? OR a sunshine server? HAHAHA , now you're one of us, one of us, one of us
I win? I win!! What have I won? Seriously though, the SD is good, I enjoy it. It’s not the “best” but I like all it does. Welcome to the SD family. While I’m happy you got one, I really hope it was not from pressure fro the community. I’d rather you do what you want to and make content on that.
The Ayaneo 2 is better, but it's WAY more expensive. I bought my Steam Deck in February with my tax return and I LOVE it. There are TONS of games that aren't verified by Steam which run seamlessly. Like Resident Evil 4: Remake. It's unverified but works perfectly. My biggest issue is the fact that anti-cheat software makes it tough to play certain games without ridiculous work arounds, like Destiny 2.
Any ETA on your Deck emulation video? I, like you initially SWORE that I’d never need (or want) a Steam Deck because I was so happy with my RP2+ and RP3+. Once you showed me that I can stream Switch from my PC to the RP3+, I was in heaven. But after many months of enjoying my current handhelds, I’ve started wanting something larger (because I’m quickly becoming old and blind) and slightly more powerful (to play higher end games natively). The past month, I’ve gotten sucked in by all the hubbub about the higher powered entries like the ROG Ally and Legion Go…and after a little more research, I’ve now come to realize that the Deck is actually powerful enough do accomplish my gaming needs without paying $600-700. As the most common sense, and least biased content creator in the gaming community, I’d love to hear your experience with higher end emulators on your Deck when you get the capacity to make a video.
i just got one myself during that july sale. the matte screen with the 512gb version was worth it to me. i also upgraded it and put windows and other oses on it. when i have a break, i might install emudeck and distrobox and docker and virtualbox for a more meta os experience.
The cool thing is, almost any handheld emulator will give one a Lifetime of games if they are down with the systems, the rest is either personal preference or just keeping up with the Joneses... if that's how ya spell joneses... Anyway, I have an rp2+ and I Love the "up to some gamecube" level, just right for me thus far, and I have other hobbies - this isn't my first love, I have spent more on a pen for cryin out loud. But that's right for Me. Just don't fall for the hedonic treadmill of always needing the next shiny thing if all you really need to do is play contra all day, or burger time. But when prices drop, tech advances, best bet I'll have another upgrade, just not now. And my rp2+ may go to a friend, and that's rad.just remember - if you're not having fun you're doing it wrong. That's aboot it! (Canada lingo implied). Cheers bud, keep having fun and, be safe and happy!
This just popped up on my TH-cam feed for some reason, maybe it was to tell you that if you want to use your windows save file for Shadow of the Tomb Raider you can just force it to use Proton instead of using the Linux version?
I ordered a deck and it's arriving tomorrow morning. I took a look at my steam library, thinking i only had about 20 or 30 games. Turns out i have 299 games. Guess ive been slowly buying steam games on sale over the years lol
Oh hell no you didn't just say that. It's a Game Gear for computer games. It's design is clearly inspired by Game Gear and Nomad. It's the most Sega styled device on the market. Please do not take this one away from us Sega fans too. No, I am not letting you. It's a damn Game Gear for Pc games and listen, you may not like Sega or their products but, this one no, I am going to fight you on this one. I just can't get over its size and the placement of the d-pad/face buttons being right on the corner edges. I find even the Switch in handheld mode to be too much weight and size. Nice trackpads, tho
I found it took a long session of playing on it to get used to the control layout, but now that I have, using the Switch feels like a chore in comparison. But then again, I'm someone who doesn't really like staggered sticks (Xbox/Switch style) anyway.

@@TechDweeb lots of people bought the mid tier deck. Supposedly, the ROG ally is targeting the $600 deck for similar price to start.
8:19 regarding the FSR if the game has FSR its recommended to turn of steam decks FSR, they are Overlaping because not all games Support FSR naturally, but the steam deck does it naturally
The cutout puppet intros are always great.
It's really cool that retro game corps is a patron of your channel. Russ is such a cool dude.
Couldn't agree more!
In my case, the OLED convinced me to try and get the Deck
Got my SD like 3,4 months ago and just rediscovered World of Warcafft after so many years! Clearly is a game changer for me!
I have watched your videos for some time and I have to say that I am a bit addicted! The way you are mixing sarcasm with all that nerdie stuff is just straight down my ally! Really great job!! And I looove the way you are pronouncing DDR! 😁😁😁
Thanks for saying so!
@@TechDweeb Do you have a donation site, like PayPal or Ko-fi?? I'm not a big fan of Patreon since our lives in the modern world are becoming more and more like a small subscription hell... 🥴 So I would rather pay a contribution now and then on my own terms...
"It's so hard and unloving." That's what she..........
😏
I just got myself an anbernic a couple weeks ago also for pokemon (and thps2) and have been watching steam deck videos non stop since
I just installed Cyberpunk 2077 on my Steam deck. It runs and looks great! I have no desire to buy an ROG or Lenovo Legion anymore.
i don't thinks it looks bad, its super clean and aesthetic
I absolutely love the idea of the Steam deck and for sure am gonna switch to a handheld PC come next gen consoles, I’ve bought and been involved in so much of the Xbox and GOG ecosystem that I’m waiting for the Asus ROG ally and since some MS employees said they’re gonna make a handheld version of Windows to make it more seamless on the handhelds. And also they have the mobile GPU attachment for the TV and you can customize that as you wish.
I've only just got the RG35XX and now the Dweebster rocks up with a Steam Deck.
RG35XX is amazing. It might be my most played handheld ATM.
"Gameboy for PC games," she nailed it.
"Die you mother fuh******" I fell out of my seat the way you said it and cut it off at the perfect time lol. Thank you for having a sense of humor xD
After watching this and a few other videos I went and got a steam deck.
It's pretty amazing. Battery life is really good at 10 watts. And it runs fallout 4 at ultra with about 3 + hours of playtime between charges.
2:46 "The power of the -sun- PC, in the palm of my hands"
"The Steam Deck is ugly."
Yeah, but it's ugly in a really nice way. Like a beloved ugly family dog. Yeah, he's not great to look at, but you wouldn't trade him for the world.
Good point. My cat isn't much to look at but she's my best friend.
Finally!
The best for your buck portable emulation/gaming device.
7:05 The way I found to bypass that is to force the use of a specific proton compatibility. Then it'll download the windows version of the game via an update. You'll have to play around to find out which version will work (most of the time, just choose experimental)
I tried that, but it was crashing before reaching the menu. Probably need to try other protons or reinstall.
love hanging around here.
i remember my dog killd me once on my way to Canada 😫
Luckily I live in Canada, so I don't need to brave the Death Road.
I am absolutely obsessed with my steam deck.
I toon in for every episode in hopes that I will hear tech dweeb say “giggle bites” 😂 totally worth it. Makes me piss my pants every time 😮
The gigglebytes are plentiful around these parts ;)
Yo Tech Dweeb how's it hanging? I'm just skateboardin, yeah man have you heard of moonlight? OR a sunshine server? HAHAHA , now you're one of us, one of us, one of us
Thanks for your not-so-subtle encouragement to join your deck cult neighbor! And before you ask, yes, I will sign your skateboard.
Now I won't get back pain from sitting in a chair, and can instead lay down while gaming.
I win? I win!! What have I won?
Seriously though, the SD is good, I enjoy it. It’s not the “best” but I like all it does. Welcome to the SD family. While I’m happy you got one, I really hope it was not from pressure fro the community. I’d rather you do what you want to and make content on that.
90% of the pressure was in my own brain, that's how I justify buying expensive toys
@TechDweeb 90% of the time you are 100% correct
The planets are in alignment...Dweeb and Deck combine.
Don't forget about Emudeck!
I won't!
Emudeck is the best. I've got the greatest handheld gaming machine ever.
Love your videos! Would love to see you pair the Deck with the Nreal Air glasses!
Well said my dude. You're wise beyond your years.
Steam button and lb magnifier. It helps
This just popped up on my TH-cam feed for some reason, maybe it was to tell you that if you want to use your windows save file for Shadow of the Tomb Raider you can just force it to use Proton instead of using the Linux version?
"At your mom's job" 😂
that is a good discretion I'm using it at work and will describe it as so from now on
I ordered a deck and it's arriving tomorrow morning. I took a look at my steam library, thinking i only had about 20 or 30 games. Turns out i have 299 games. Guess ive been slowly buying steam games on sale over the years lol
Niiiiice!
i only have 30 games lol
Oh hell no you didn't just say that. It's a Game Gear for computer games.
It's design is clearly inspired by Game Gear and Nomad. It's the most Sega
styled device on the market. Please do not take this one away from us Sega
fans too. No, I am not letting you. It's a damn Game Gear for Pc games and
listen, you may not like Sega or their products but, this one no, I am going
to fight you on this one. It's a Sega PC handheld made by Valve and it brought
handheld PC gaming to everyone. Like the design or not it's king for now.
I don't disagree!
Just went dual boot with steam deck tools installed and Windows 11 Pro and love being able to play all the other launchers without jumping through hoops aka messing with Linux to get Ubisoft and Battlenet on the system.
Nice! Do you mean that you installed win11 on an SD card? Or that you installed it alongside the linux system on your internal SSD?
@@TechDweeb not sure what they did, personally I upgrade my SSD to 1tb and partitioned it, Installed both. Have to say I'm not using windows that much on it, even with gamepass. But I'd recommend getting uwphook and set steam to start in big picture mode on it. Uwphook will put your gamepass games in steams ui and has the same controller functions in that UI. You'll also want "Steam Deck Tools". Mostly for the better fan curve and the controller hooking for outside of steams ui.
The power stuff and etc, ehhhh I didn't bother with.
@@TechDweeb The internal SSD. I bought the MICRON 2TB last week new for less than $200 and couldn't pass it up. Those cards were $450 when I got my Deck in August.
I'm ordering mine next week I'm bit nervous been a console gamer for 33 years it my first time trying pc gaming
same here, im 36 years old, changed recentely and love playing on my pc, but adult life forces me to move, and there is where steam deck rocks, have been having more play time since i got it
Which consoles? The Steam Deck can emulate everything except for the PS4/5.
@@Nickbaldeagle02 I've got a ps5 series x and switch
Man i might have to get a steam deck now...
ONE OF US! ONE OF US!
Most of my PC games are on GOG so no matter how many praises I hear it is really hard to impossible sell for me.
I just don't have much games in Steam to get a use out of it.
Woah, did you just call my deck ugly? 😢
It's function over form.
Is it easier to read small text on the FunKey S screen or the Deck?
About the same. Nothing is easier than the Thumby though!
OK, I laughed more than I should at the playing at your mom's job and at whipping it out 😅
It's OK, I caved in too... But still loving my notorious rp3+!
PSA for any new Deck owners: Don't sleep on the 40 fps at 40/80 Hz mode! It can look almost as smooth as 60 fps on 60 Hz, but it will give you significantly more battery life and lower the fan loudness.
It took you long enough mate , I love mine , all my other handhelds are gathering dust now
So happy you have one finally, I feel like you could actually teach me to turn this baby into an emulation machine!
I'm playing around with that right now actually!
No need. Buy a Batocera drive from Explosion Of Fun. They've got a TH-cam channel. I bought one. It's superb.
i see this channel going places.. solid stuff.. you earned my sub..
Thanks for saying so!
Imagine my surprise when I upgraded my MiyooMini+ to Onion OS and got the TechDweeb theme as an added bonus. I want my money back! Just kidding , it was a pleasant addition.
Yeah how cool is that? I'm honored to be part of such an awesome project 🤓
Make an emulation video about everything it can emulate from Atari to Wii (U).
Would love to see the screen & battery in action for that
I don't know what it is but I Vibe very heavily with your mentality of specialized devices.
Steam deck is a great well rounder but I see the straight advantage your other systems have in their specific uses.
I want one of these hella bad but with my luck by the time I save up and get one they’ll have something better coming out right after I pull the trigger on it lol
Happens EVERY time. It's all part of the fun!
Correction, YOU WIN!!! Welcome to the DECK cult!!
Hey what was the first game you played in the video? At 0:14
Never mind 🤦♂️ I see it's destroy all humans
GREAT game!
@@TechDweeb I've never played it but it looks like I'd like it! Thanks for exposing it to me dude! Also, get ready to be famous man! I see you're already gaining mad traction but your channel is muy bueno and once more people see it, you WILL make it big! Very entertaining stuff and it's unique which is hard to accomplish in tech/gaming TH-cam! I'll be keeping up on your growth and I'll be cheering you on! Gonna send a couple of your videos to my buddies I know they'll like your channel
You can play for about 2 & 1/2 hrs straight.
THE STEAMDECK IS AWSOME!! not perfect but awsome !
I've sold every other handheld I own. The Steam Deck rules.
Better late then never TechDweeb! Great video. :)
Hey man don’t discriminate on the game gear that was my first handheld (just kidding) but great video man good job T.D. 🤙
I'm just jealous because I never had one 😏
Next level characters :o are those selfmade? More of that!
I'm definitely hanging on for Steam Deck: Part Deux. When the new Switch finally comes out, that will entertain me for a couple of years. But given how well Valve seem to've done with their first foray into this market, I suspect their next one will be incredible.
LMAO I didn't want you to get this. Too expensive.
But... the only way into the cool club is to buy your way in 🥺
I just can't get over its size and the placement of the d-pad/face buttons being right on the corner edges. I find even the Switch in handheld mode to be too much weight and size.
Nice trackpads, tho
Yeah I'm kinda with you. It feels okay but it looks super weird.
I found it took a long session of playing on it to get used to the control layout, but now that I have, using the Switch feels like a chore in comparison. But then again, I'm someone who doesn't really like staggered sticks (Xbox/Switch style) anyway.
Great piece of hardware. I hope it becomes the norm, as it is very useful.
Thanks for making me spit take, Miyoo Mini dick joke... 🤣
😂 bro this is comedy! Definitely gonna look into one now!
I use gamepass on steam os but to be honest I dont want to but my Fable 2 addiction is STRONG
ye ye these handhelds psp`s and gameboys cool but can you play Java Minecraft on your other handheld devices? exactly!
I like confiquring games more than playing them so the steamdeck is perfect for me
Haha same
Emudeck ❤️
...I love your wall- e🤗
He's my best friend!
loved the skit lol. Subscribed!
This video gets a like from me purely for the intro!! "One of us!!!" lol!
