- Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today's episode is dedicated to Mock 2, the Speed of Stupid, not Sunlust. I think the joke has outlived its usefulness: thumbnail and title have been changed as of October 18th, 2022.
OLD INTRO:
Today’s episode will be dedicated to Sunlust, a 2015 megawad co-authored by Ribbiks and Dannebubinga widely renowned for its high production quality and exceptional difficulty. It’s the most requested megawad in Dean of Doom’s history for good reason: Sunlust contains some of the most creative and spellbinding maps you’re likely to ever play. I confess, when I first dedicated myself to doing this episode, I didn’t know if I would be capable of finishing it, but here we are, and BOY have I got a lot to talk about. Let’s not waste time, I’m sure many of you are itching to get into this one.

Can i just say, that i love how there are moments in this episode, where he seems to genuinely be giving an honest opinion about the map, and then the next sentence he's back to joking around? That kinda added to the feeling of whiplash this wad gives off

I expected the joke “haha that’s not sunlust!” thing to get pretty old, but it never did. This video is hilarious the whole way through.

lol. Damn you. Almost choked on my drink when I heard In Defense of Demonsex. Mock 2 might require more stamina to get through than Sunlust does! (Also this is the funniest episode so far. The Delinquent's delievery is incredible.)

Thanks for reviewing this one, Dean. The authors should be proud of this magnificent achievement (map 9 of this WAD and map 20 of Alien Vendetta are the only maps that have ever brought me to tears). The combat is right up there with Plutonia, and only players with an IQ of at least 300 will be able to track down all of the secrets. The item placement is also on point -- the sole health bonus at the end of the long tunnel on map 23 was exactly what I needed to prepare for the onslaught of hitscanners that I had to deal with in map 24. Keep up the good work.
i'm sure we'll see a difficulty "FUCK' in the real Sunlust video also. Great vid, laughed and huffed glue the entire time.

@@eltiolavara9 Most Doom maps are usually only built with one vertical aiming position in mind, plus trying to actually look up & down on software renderers tends to make me nauseous and dizzy, mostly 'cause y-shearing does that to me. It's why I only really do it on ports that actually support non-shearing mouselook.

I've commented a million times but as a 35 year old man who's has played doom since he was 9 years old.....the nostalgia factor for all this is so high that sometimes I feel I wanna cry.
You see I'm one of those young men who has end stage cancer and I just want to uplift this somehow and would love to talk to you Mt. Pain at sometime to give you some high praise and help. Not only that but to prove that some games are so embedded in a young mans life that you can find solace even in the arcane, the.....Gene Birds lmfao....the done a million times gimmicks and all the continuity that this series has to offer.
It is my safe home as I pass. And I'm so proud just to have this series but I would be prouder to speak with the gunnery sergeant in charge and his delinquent to offer some advice and high fucking praise to their commitment. I love you guys.

You know, I was really hoping for an actual Sunlust review... I did get suspicious when you didn't mention the 'but discouraged' part discussing your policy on saves in your intro.
After playing maximum doom and a bunch of random shovelware and early 90s wad.. mock 2: the speed of stupid begins to makes an extreme amount of sense.
Ïts almost like an artistic transformation takes place, where you start to get, WHAT the wad is referencing, what its is trying to do. Waiting for 2 minutes for an elevator, or running around useless colossal places, mandatory outdrawn backtracking IS DEAD on the nose. I also think YAKWORLD was an important inspiration for mock 2.

So by "asked so nicely", you mean that people almost offended you to review Sunlust? I mean, if that's the case, keep in mind that 90% of Sunlust players suffer from Post Traumatic Sunlust Disorder which could cause, among other things, aggressive behavior.

Ah, yes. Sunlust. I remember that one map were the only used texture was fireblue. Truly magnificent.

I was today years old when I first caught the "Catching teh switch" joke at 5:53. That's a priceless tiny detail that adds a whole lot to rewatching older episodes. Thank you so much.
The unhinged MIDI paired with ‘the cyber-cyberdemons’ is the best gag in the whole wad

The scent of early 2000s of this mod stains my nostrils with it's stink! I hope that you don't actually end the Dean of Doom series, I'm really enjoying watching these and your commentary is very pleasant and helped me be not quite as terrible at Doom!
Usually when I watch these videos, if I haven't played the megawad in question I play 5 levels then watch the reviews of those 5 levels and compare opinions. I have a feeling the rift between our opinions one may be stronger than usual on this one.

Man I can't believe Decino beat this from pistol start no saves 100% kills nightmare with keyboard controls while John Romero was punching him in the chest as hard as he can. Absolute Doom God
This review was top-tier comedy, down to the last detail. Punchier than a berserk pack and sharper than a chainsaw. Nice shoutout to BigMacDavis, and the Delinquent’s ‘I don’t care, I didn’t prepare’ cadence was spot-on.

I've never heard of this wad, so the joke went over my head at first. But you did a tremendous job, absolutely hilarious.
I actually wonder how many seasons Dean of Doom will have in total. I can only think of you filling up a whole season or two before running out of the most popular and well known stuff.
I wish the *actual* doom fanbase/community was larger to be honest. Your content deserves more views but I am glad you make at least some money from patreon.
Playing just the popular wads would give him a good 7-8 seasons - and playing everything good (regardless of popularity) would be a full time job for about a year straight!

@@panthekirb7561 once I’m on my PC, I’ll do it - too much of a pain in the ass to do on mobile.. needless to say, the cacowards are just the cream of the crop and even getting through all of those would take time. Also I’d be including anything with an episodes worth of maps or more, you don’t necessarily need 32 maps for this format

The fact that you started out with this joke wad made Covid easier to deal with LOL.
As somebody who is flagrantly cautious around these types of events and basically utilizes the stylings of this wad as means to humor others, I didnt think youd have it in you to handle this Legend among Legends, this myth among myths in the wide wonderful world of doom.
But then I saw you stand and deliver. Dean of Doom, you made quite the fool of me.

I’ve had my own review of Sunlust in a similar format in the works, but you beat me to it. You made some great points in this video. I personally think MAP30 is one of the most grandiose and atmospheric maps ever made. :)

Best April fool's joke I've seen today, and more than likely, best I've seen in years :)
My interpretation of Tapeworms Suck Anii is that it proves that DOOM is not as mindless as people think it is at first look. If it truly was, the game would be unengaging and boring, just like this map. What makes DOOM fun is how you have to use your weapons tactically and at the right time, think about what enemies to prioritize, explore the maps for keys and secrets, as well as manage your ammo, health, and armor. If you strip all that away, the game just wouldn’t be fun or rewarding at all.
I’ve been going on a weekly MtPain27 binge and every video of yours I watch after this makes me question if you are being serious or not. That’s how great this video is.
