THE PLUTONIA EXPERIMENT (feat. Plutonia MIDI Pack) - DEAN OF DOOM - S1E6

  • Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to The Plutonia Experiment, which was released as the second half of Final Doom in 1996. It was designed entirely by Dario and Milo Casali, who also contributed to TNT: Evilution. Now, the first thing that everybody and their brother can tell you about Plutonia is that it’s hard--well...was hard. The Casalis designed Plutonia to challenge players who had fully mastered Doom II, and I’d say they succeeded. In the Doom community, the Plutonia effect was twofold: it pushed players to greater heights of performance, and encouraged mappers to go even more nuts than the brothers Casali did, setting off an ever-escalating back and forth between difficulty junkies who needed tougher maps and crazy level designers who needed better players. I’m excited to get into this one: the more Doom I play, the more I respect and enjoy the Plutonia Experiment.
    I’ll be using the Plutonia MIDI pack for this playthrough, which replaces the stock tracks from Doom and Doom II with considerably more flavorful tunes courtesy of some of the community’s best composers, including Jimmy, Stewboy, Bucket, Eris Falling, Viscra Maelstrom, and Mr. Freeze. It really refreshes the megawad, and made my replay a lot more fun, I highly recommend everyone try it out for themselves.

    Plutonia remains one of my favorite pick-up-and-play megawads, let alone the most fun to revisit in full vs. the other official WADs. I'm particularly a fan of concise, elegant levels like Caughtyard, The Crypt, Compound, and Neurosphere. The larger ones generally do well, especially Odyssey of Noises (which can be a little tough to navigate at first, but is ultimately way more fun and compelling than even Romero's Industrial Zone), but I definitely tend towards the popcorn-sized maps.
    Beyond riffing on Ultimate Doom and Doom II in a pleasant way, it's awesome how Plutonia fully utilized the Doom II bestiary and its myriad combinations while rarely going for spectacle over efficient design. Go 2 It still has low numbers compared to its progeny, but feels almost as contemporary (the ammo/health bonanza gives it away). Combined with the excellent MIDI pack, it's easy to see how and why this map set remains more relevant today than most. As someone currently making a large Plutonia-style map, it's important for me to keep replaying the successful Casali maps and look for inspiration here and in the IWADs before Plutonia.

    IMO, I think "Go 2 It" is a bit overrated in terms of difficulty. You get tons of megaspheres and ammo is practically infinite. The courtyard area is more annoying rather than difficult, clearing out corridors with mancubi is tedious, and those "stationary" cyberdemons prey on your boredom. Don't get me wrong, it's still a lot of fun and it feels epic, but it's more tiring and tedious than it is actually hard. I think the biggest reason of dying on "Go 2 It" is by blowing yourself up with rockets to the face. :P
    P.S. Huge props for giving a shout out to the Plutonia MIDI Pack, I can't overstate how much it adds to the overall experience.
    I would like to hear your opinion on:
    Plutonia 2 (It's Map 11 is an ACTUAL nightmare that I fear with passion)
    SIGIL (I'm sure it's somewhere on your to-do list already :D)

    • @hiramesensei3112
      @hiramesensei3112 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not great, it takes me several attempts to UVmax most Plutonia levels, but i can reliably clear Go 2 It first attempt. There's a lot of high level monsters, but no real pressure. You can run around, cause infighting, restock ammo and health, and dodge easily. As the grandfather of slaughter maps, i guess they were still working out the special sauce. Compare to modern slaughter maps that like to drop you into a tiny area filled with too many monsters to keep you threatened constantly.

  • @NinjaRed5000
    @NinjaRed5000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Definitely the better half of Final Doom for me, what helps is that Plutonia has smaller maps that you can beat in a few minutes if you know what you're doing. It never feels like its overstaying its welcome.

    In map 28, just like map 06, it's not 'invisible', it uses the voodoo doll trick, basically as you step on a certain spot or traverse a linedef, a doll of your character gets the weapons (most probably a lift lowers) and thus you get those too, since the dool is basically the player's 'soul'

    "It's not actually an Impossible Mission"
    Laughs in Co-Op Monsters.
    Well, Ok it IS still possible, but that Chaingunner/Barrel Room becomes about 20x more evil with 2 added Cyberdemons, 4 Archviles hidden inside falling slime, and a Baron blocking the only exit followed immediately by another Baron in a tight space. Pretty sure you can't do without chaingun sniping some of the Archviles in one of the prior rooms.
    If anybody thinks that Plutonia is hell already, playing with Co-Op monsters on turns it into a true testament of pain and brutality.

    • @nbrocx4216
      @nbrocx4216 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wait, you can take out the archviles from a previous room? I did not know that. Which room is that, and is it possible to take out all archviles from that room, or only a few?
      I agree. Co-op monsters bring in a fresh, challenging but entertaining set of maps in plutonia. Honestly speaking, I have enjoyed TNT more with -fast -solo-net parameters than I did with plutonia, but, plutonia is fun as well.
      Also, plutonia with fast monsters and solo-net parameters is insane. Map 22 of plutonia and map 28 of tnt are the only 2 maps that I have not been able to beat successfully on -fast -solo-net, pistol start. (Ironically, mount pain on solo-net is one of the easiest tnt maps)
      Any tips for map 28 of tnt? XD

      As for MAP28 of TNT. Pray to your God and hope he shines down apon you.
      In all seriousness I've only been able to do Co-Op Monster runs of TNT and Plutonia with saves and carrying over weapons from previous levels. I'm uncertain if you can beat either of those two maps from a pistol start. But considering the insane levels of skill many members of the DOOM community have, I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

      I think I understood the area you are talking about. I'm not exactly able to reach the farther 2 archviles. But, yeah, I see now how it can be done.
      However, it's still very difficult to beat this with fast Monsters enabled. 2 archviles and 2 cyberdemons....yeah. not pretty. I've been trying to do this map on pistol start. You just dont get enough bullets to use the chain gun for 4 archviles.
      Well, I expected that from map 28.
      Yeah. I'm kind of on the same page. I did try single segment runs with fast Monsters and co-op monsters. And, I've been able to do most maps that dont have resurrecting chaingunners or narrow-room cyberdemons. Maps 7, 10, 22 (and a few more I cant remember atm) are the few maps I have not been able to do without saves.
      Idk how many of them play with fast monsters enabled. But, yeah, I do think they will be able to come up with a solution.

    I gave myself the challenge to play through this entire wad with the "Colourful Hell" mod and even made videos about every map. That mod makes most of the monsters stronger, depending on which colors they get. Also on UV and pistol start... it was a fun challenge that was also very frustrating in some parts.
    One thing that really pissed me off was the final room in "Abattoire", the fact that you can't get out of the pit after you fall in. It used to be one of my favourite maps but that one room really drags it down.
    The following map was also pretty damn hard, I wonder how difficult it is when playing it without the mod...
    Also, I also enjoy the music for map 3 a lot. It sounds like it coould fit perfectly in Secret / Trials of Mana or similiar games.

    the difference between Plutonia and TNT is that Plutonia feels like it was actually play tested.

    I have a love/meh relationship with Plutonia and TNT. TNT seems more polished and has a consistent theme based on its basic story (demon space ship appears above the base and rains down monsters) whereas Plutonia's maps seem really haphazard as if they were all made independently and then stuffed together to make a wad pack and the only running theme are the exist teleports. I like both but if you gave me a choice between these 2 and Icarus I'd go with Icarus.

  • @UnchainedEruption

    Plutonia is the hardest but most satisfying of the commercial iwads. I love all the original classic Doom levels, but Plutonia was in many ways my favorite. It simultaneously terrifies the player with insane levels of high-level demons everywhere, yet never resorts to boring slaughter-map style approaches to demon encounters. Instead, demon placement is deliberate and insidiously genius. Despite this, you're given the tools necessary to come out on top. So the combination of at once feeling, "oh dear mother of god I'm so completely f*cked" with "holy shit I'm actually doing this, hell yeah!! F*ck yeah!!!" that makes you feel like even more of a badass that you're conquering these ridiculously impossible odds. All taking place inside of levels with a consistent design structure (since it's just 2 guys) and some really fantastic architecture and color palette choices that continues to inspire mappers to this day.

    The guy porting Final Doom to the PlayStation chose Onslaught to be the final map, and it's kind of easy to see why - it's brutal. While the PSX version trades off *some* of the difficulty due to processing limits on the console and a lack of Arch Viles, it makes up for it by adding a Cyberdemon where there isn't one in the PC original.

    I just wanted to leave this comment to say thank you. I recently got into Doom through 2016 and immediately played Eternal on Hurt Me Plenty. I went back and decided to play classic Doom and Doom 2 on the same difficulty and was having so much fun. During this I found your channel and became obsessed. Just seeing you play doom was so nice and chill which I needed cause I’ve been going through a lot both mentally and in regards to my health. You were my go to when that stuff got bad. Anyway, I booted up TNT but a few levels in I thought to myself, MtPain plays on ultra violence and maybe I should give that a go? I never in a million years thought I could do it but watching your videos gave me the confidence. But now, I’ve completed all commercially released Doom WADS on ultra violence and conquered The Plutonia Experiment last night. I was so happy that I managed to do something I thought I never could. You and Doom have got me through so much the past few months and I want to say thank you because without your channel, I would not have fallen in love with Doom like I have and I would have never beaten these classic titles on Ultra Violence. I’ve now started 2016 on UV and will do the same with Eternal and both dlcs. Keep up the great work and remember not only do you help people through some of their most difficult times in their lives, you also inspire them. Can’t wait to see the rest of Season 2. Much love.

    I was gonna write a long wall of text for every map that you reviewed. XD
    But, I decided against it. I mean, I don't think you (or anyone for that matter) would have the time or patience to read it.
    To any of you out there that wants to play the official wads in a more challenging fashion, try out fast monsters, and also co-op monsters.
    I've played all the official wads (sigil as well) on -fast and -solo-net parameters, and it's been a lot of fun. I'll definitely say this though, the difficulty ratings for maps 10,15 and 22 of plutonia will go to X with -fast -solo-net. Map 32 may be A+ or X, idk.
    If you are done with the official wads, don't stop there. :)
    I recently did some of the maps of Valiant with fast monsters enabled. Map31 was a joy to play. I'm gonna try it with Sunlust too, soon. Though, I don't think I will be able to beat the last 3 missions with fast monsters enabled, at all. XD

    Replaying Plutonia (with a few mods) right now so of course I had to check out this video again. I always find it personally very funny that you describe Caged as an unmemorable, dull map - to me it is one of my defining memories of Doom, because as a 5-year old, I watched my dad play it. He taught me his strategy of hiding out in the corners past the bridges and waiting for enemies to slowly come to you. I distinctly remember watching him wait for a Cacodemon to slowly trundle over to him so he could unload on it with the chaingun. Hey, it worked for him!
    Congo is my E1M1, but Caged is my Entryway.

    i remember seeing bucket saying that he didn't know much about plutonia and asked him for a slot, jimmy gave him map09 and when he did that, he again gave him map 15 to work on. he even did map32 as a challenge for himself and it's pretty smile worthy.

    Plutonia was my first episode of Doom, i was 10 y o . This was a real trauma, it taught me to be good at playing doom. Like you, map 10 was dreadful : no ssg before the end, an infamous swarm of high tier mobs in a narrow space. But the obligation to run until you take the rocket launcher make the archvile decisive and he's the essence of the map. Not my favorite moment but i like this map. I had serious troubles with Speed, Final Frontier, Antichrist and Temple of Darkness. The last chapter was exhausting and not good as the third. Go 2 It wasn't so difficult, as you said, there's a lot of supplies in this map. But it is very fun and give inspiration to many creators. Plutonia is a great wad, today it is largely less difficult than most modern megawads, but i find his unfair side makes other megawads, more difficult yet, less punitive. NB : in plutonia, revenant will kill you so often, they never be a problem after

    Honestly, I thought I would hate plutonia like nothing else, but after playing through every level, I’ve grown to appreciate it much more. I may have a softer spot for the first 2 dooms, but I’ll say this is the most consistent WAD in commercial doom in terms of quality and challenge. Even if I wasn’t too big on the maps from tombstone onward with the exception of the final frontier, anti-christ, and the gateway of hell (no, I wasn’t a fan of Odyssey of noises. Give me onslaught any day), There wasn’t a map I wanted to give up on or didn’t have fun with (except for hunted during my first playthrough, but once I conquered my fears and beat it, it became my favorite level in the wad), unlike Evilution where I’m on Mill and I want to give up so badly.

    23:20 not exactly, but there's an illusion as if you were grabbing a BFG, in Doom single player, you can put 1 or more player start locations, putting more will make the 1st player start location where you will start, others are Doom Slayer clones that kills you if you kill them which coins the term "voodoo doll". So what the Casalis did was place a linedef that activates a room with a voodoo doll and a BFG under it, it lowers the platform so the voodoo doll can grab the BFG, because the voodoo doll represents you, they share the same inventory as you. Same thing happens at "Baron's Lair".
