Hey guys there are tons of great comments and questions here. I started answering some but figured a follow up video reading through some of these comments and questions would be even better! Look out for that follow up in about week or so.
The check engine light is due to the heated seats being on! i had the same issue so I have stopped turning them on. Havent gotton a check engine light since
@TheMetalGuy852 saying summer tires, witch are designed for warm-hot weather are bad in the cold and snow makes them awful is strange to me. i mean, would you call a snow shovel awful for digging a hole for a fence post? the dunlops are not the best summer tire but i absolutely guarantee that they will out perform every single all season tire ever made when its 80F outside.
I have a 2017 with 40k miles. The sound that you hear after you turn the car on from a cold start is the throw out bearing. It's a very very common issue and it seems to happen more on humid days. I just started to have the clutch pedal squeak and I took it to Subaru. They quoted me about $584 to fix it. I'm just driving it with the squeak and I've noticed that it goes away for about a week then comes back for a couple of minutes and disappears. Both of these issues wont affect the cars performance or lead to any further damage. Just a heads up because I know I had a hard time finding answers to these questions.
I own 2015 WRX CVT for almost 4 years...0 major or minor issues so far. Couple of times *check engine* light came on but went away itself it was O2 Censor code, went away itself. Light only comes on after a snow storm or when I hand washed my car. So far great car.. year around blast to drive. It loves hunt V8 RWD muscle cars on snowy winter day. PS: My car is 100% stock planning to keep it that way forever. Love from Canada 🇨🇦
I bought a used 2015 WRX a couple of years ago and I love it. I had the same AC issue, but dealer said it was an o-ring issue. The suspension is just brutal sometimes driving on bad roads tho. You can pretty much feel every crack when you drive over it. That would be my only complaint. The look of the car and the community has been awesome.
I just got a 2015 wrx I love it! 70k miles it really is amazing great for my son very safe, AND WHEN HE'S NOT IN THE CAR, the pulls are amazing! I love the sound of the stock turbo
I just bought a '17 on Saturday with 24k miles.. never knew how the previous owner drove it so I got a warranty lol. I have wanted one for years before this generation came out and I'm glad I watched this to reassure myself that they're still reliable. Keeping mine mostly stock except for exhaust because I feel they built the car how it should be. Great video.
@@drewlindsay3553 tough to say man. If you're mechanically inclined and can spot a good one that hasn't been abused, then yes. I've replaced alot of the stock parts as they wore out - water pump, timing belt (x2), clutch, struts, valve gaskets. etc.
So far I have every one beat. 2015 wrx. I bought with 5 miles on it and now it just hit 130,000 miles! Yup! I drive A LOT! With the original clutch. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with a few hiccups. My ac compressor died completely. I've had the battery replace 3 times in 4 years. I get the clutch squeak when theres a lot of moisture in the air. I have had the check engine light while it's cold. My truck does it too, I just let it warm up and it goes away. Typically cold fluids? I also have an issue with depressing the clutch. So much so I feel like I'm driving a manual for the first time. Ha! Its definitely a calf killer! Wonderful review. It will definitely help others if they are looking to buy. Mine puts a smile on my face every time I drive it! It makes my commute to work fun!
I've also go a 2015wrx with a little over 100K. No issues, except I also had the AC compressor go out. I replaced the OEM battery with a third party battery, and had no further issues. In cold weather with summer tyers, my center diff tends to lock up when a turn hard when the car is cold. I don't think that counts as a problem though. I agree that the clutch is hard to use smoothly. I find that I have to rev it more than you think you should. My Dad has a 2016, and the clutch is remarkably easier to use. I think there's an issue with the throttle mapping on the 2015s.
@@Sethgolas I've only used the subaru batteries only because they were all covered under the battery warranty. I've already decided that my next battery will not be by Subaru. I just replaced my clutch due to the throw out bearing going out. I made it to 140k. It made more sense to replace the whole thing simply because it would be due for one sooner or later. After a bit of research I decided to go with the original stock clutch. Depressing the clutch isn't so rough now. its catch point is still a little tricky, which results in revving it more then needed. Other clutches I was interested in would result in the same response, so mapping makes more sense now.
Great review man, I like your optimism. I have a 2019 and at first I was disappointed. The heat soak gets pretty bad when it's hot outside (90F+) and the power tapers off.. To get a few satisfying shifts from 1st to 3rd while keeping the car on boost feels like a blessing from heaven. Starting off a stand still at a light makes my wife think that I try to drag race all the time. But interestingly, the longer I drive this car, the more I want to drive it. Tough love
I have a 2015 WRX Limited, I still own the car. My experiences: car is completely stock, also had in cold climate in North Dakota for 3 years and I would say all my problems came when I was there. I’ve had it go in limp mode because the cam gear failed, dealer replaced it. They also put a brand new ECU in as well. I went through 2 batteries while there because the extreme cold (warranty replaced) Also has my AC fixed for the same issue. I’ve had the car home in California at sea level for the past year and a half and had 0 issues, I love the car and plan on keeping it forever, it handles great and gets 25-30 mpg. I’ve always changed the oil every 3k and would recommend that to everyone for longer engine life. It’s a great all around car.
15 wrx owner here too - 5 years as well. Hit everything spot on. Especially the AC issues. Car is stage 2 and running strong since 13k miles (85k now). Hate the car, the only difference is I own it, I don’t drive often anymore besides weekends, so it works. If I could do it over again I’d just get an sti. But I learned my lesson and never want a car payment again lol
@@igotthejuice2090 really inexpensive, exactly like any other "normal" car. for me, $5 for oil filter, $35 for 4.4L/5L top synthetic oil when on sale (castrol, rotella T6, Mobil1 euro, etc) $100 for 6L of gear oil every 50k km. not expensive at all. other fluids and maintenance items are inexpensive as well.
Subaru has a service bulletin that addresses many different clutch issues. The repair is to replace everything. The pressure plate, friction disc, fly wheel, and release bearing are all updated with heavy duty larger units. And the pedal Assembly is also replaced with an updated unit. The whole repair can still be covered Under your powertrain warranty. If the claim is for noise not abnormal wear. I'm a Subaru Master Tech And have performed this repair many many times and it is always fixed any noise problems. And you get a more heavy-duty clutch also.
We have about the same mods and got a custom tune, although I have a CVT. 5 yrs old, 26k miles, daily driver 1. AC problem fixed with a condenser replacement. It's a known Subaru issue after 2 yrs or so where it leaks. 2. Pre FW update and maybe a bad fuel load caused a spark plug to go bust. Only had to change 1. 3. Revving on a cold engine gets a CEL for "stuck intake sensor". Don't go over 25mph until the temp is at 40 degrees C. 4. Cvt overheats after about 20mins of hard driving and when forced to go slow suddenly. Fixed with an upgraded cvt cooler. 5. Oil temperature goes high on extreme heavy loads and high angle mountain inclines. Driving in the tropics need a separate oil cooler (installed) and maybe a bigger radiator (soon). 6. Passengers complain about ride comfort on 19s especially if I go beyond 33psi on the fronts 😂
Thank you my friend for the comments we have the same car operating in Jeddah Saudi Arabia I like to add the failure of the clutch , after the third year at 70,000 KM equivalent to 45,000 miles the clutch failed after replacing the set of clutch at dealer the car breakdown again because the clutch master cylinder leaked the oil , it’s really bad . For me I worked in Honda for 6 years I never experienced such case , but in Subaru the dealer recommends to replace both clutch plus master cylinder when overhauling the clutch .We never drift or race when using our car it’s simply from home to work and some nearby trips during week end . Just for the records our Hyundai Elentra 2.0 L 142 H.p clutch served 6 years and was replaced at 200,000 KM equivalent to 130,000 miles , Finally driving the WRX gives you power of feeling you want to fly it is stable because it’s a four wheel drive plus boxer engine very well designed , while gravity keeps you with full control , for young people be careful accidents happens suddenly, till then drive safe
That was fun. I just retired my 2004 Impreza. Had she not been rusting out (even though she was garaged and undercarriage washed plenty). I loved that little car. 16+ years and no real problems. Engine and transmission were absolutely perfect always. So I got the 2020 WRX I Picked her up on the 28th. I had to order her before she entered the country. They are a hot item in New England. It being a new car, it has all the bells and whistles. I’m reading the manual every night. She’s FAST 💨
I just ordered a 2021 WRX Premium in the same color as the WRX you owned. I really appreciate the long-term ownership reviews. It makes me more comfortable and excited about my purchase. I will be taking delivery in mid-August. I also live 5 minutes from where you track. I hope to see you there once I get my new car, I would love to see the Nismo, or Type R in action.
Mine is nearly 5 years old. Still loving it. Owned mine from 15km old. Just clicked over 70,000km been tuned since 2500ish km. Still drives just new. No issues. I'm keeping mine till at least 100k.
My wife's 2016 wrx has been down for 2 TOB repairs, a/c compressor change out, and has an annoying hesitation around 4500 -5000rpm in 2 (maybe it's 3rd) gear. It drives like a tank and I love it.
TSB for the AC, had that done recently. Steering angle sensor (warranty), timing chain cover leaks (extended warranty), A pillar rattles, center button for flashers rattles, rear speaker/ third brake light rattles Throw out bearing replaced under warranty. Nav touch screen not working, springs on all four corners rattle in corners. Stock 2015 WRX 60K miles. Sounds like you have been lucky with yours. The only improvement I added was center console extension.
Wow that's a lot of issues already, I consider myself very lucky then! I have a 2015 but with only about 35k miles and haven't had a single issue besides my bluetooth connectivity to my phone likes to cut out pretty frequently... otherwise everything runs like a dream!
2006 sti have had it since 2008 got it with 22,000 miles now has 124,000 miles. No issues except for emissions. Been a nightmare . In ct. Po442 po456 bought smoke machine fixed. Then po448 and po447 replaced pcm cleared in july now po447 back again
My 2016 just turned 4 years old. I'm 47 and this is the first car I've ever kept for more than 2 years. Still enjoying it and plan to keep it for a few more years. (The noise you're experiencing with the clutch is your throwout bearing. Nothing harmful, just annoying.)
Try owning a 2002 WRX with 250,000 miles. No A.C. leaking sunroof, no working antenna, gear shifter feels like neutral in every gear, low speed thud when turning, check engine always on, driver door handle fell off, hesitation at 3,700 RPM, the struggle. But she's always fun and mostly reliable to me. ✌
I bought mine with 25 miles on it at the end of 2015, it’s a 2016 and I just crossed 115k miles. It has been a solid car despite the fact I do drive it hard. Most surprisingly is the clutch is still factory.
2016 owner with 108k. Spend: O2 sensor at 24k, AC at 90k. 100k maintenance with belt change, and recently clutch with master and slave valve replacement. No launching
Owner of MY16 Subie ReXy from OZ Melbourne here, I have same owner experience like you. It's a reliable, powerful & safety machine. I dislike the driving position much while on track day (u really need a lower bucket seat), but doesn't really matter for daily driving. I gotta go for next generation of STI if Subaru deliver to Oz as promised. Anyway, thx for video mate!!!
I have a 2017 wrx. I'm 6'2 and the whole unnatural feeling when driving and not being able to adjust the seat lower is 100% true. It isn't necessarily uncomfortable but it's very unnatural and long drives make my right leg start to go numb. Other than that though the car rides very smooth, even with my coil overs. I love this car, the little things that can be frustrating come with ownership of every car IMO. Good review.
Wow lots of complaints. I bought a 2015 new, had it to 150,000 miles plus. You're right about the AC, but no problems at all other than routine maintenance. Loved the car, traded it for a 2020 new. Presently at 55,500 miles no issues. Yes it's a subaru based on the rally platform, it's not quiet.
It’s really nice to hear feedback regarding reliability from someone who’s been driving this car for 5 years and hasn’t modded/tuned it to hell. Reliability has been my biggest concern when thinking about picking up my 2019 STI since it’s such a mixed bag with a lot of the modding community. I plan to do less to it than you did to your WRX so it’s nice to have a good frame of reference reliability wise since it’s a car I plan on driving it for 5-7 years 👍
Just hit 5 years been a great car gonna keep it for another 5. Just did my own first oil change. Was great! I've owened it from 17km and it's done 80,700km.
It all starts with the 1st oil change! Before you know it you will be bleeding the clutch and changing plugs and rear diff front diff fluids! Its all easy v
2016 premium here. Owned 4 yr and no ac issue whatsoever. I wasn't happy w just stage 1 and intake, so I went catback, tgv delete, charge pipe, shifter plate from boomba, shift stoppers, dual catch can, etune and calling it good. That little noise is probably normal if it's what I'm thinking. Same noise on my 06 WRX and 2016 wrx
To fix the check engine light due to a cat delete what you do is get a special adapter that moves your O2 sensor out of the flow of the exhaust gas. on your downstream O2 sensor
@@SeanCC Yeah no i dont see how that would work. If you mean adjust the mixture to make it run richer or leaner then no that wont fix it since under full throttle the engine will run richer and the first O2 sensor will be able to determine that the catalytic converter is not working since both of their readings will be identical and it will trip the check engine light.
@@Jamie-cz2xu no, it will cause the code to not display but the thing you did to cause the 02 sensor to read out of spec, eg replace part of the stock exhaust, *requires* *a* *tune*. The 02 sensor reading something other than what it's expecting is a symptom and doing the spacer is a bandaid. Get a tune. Because without that the money spent on aftermarket exhaust parts is at best giving a marginal bump in power with the aesthetics of more sound but at worst making your engine run worse than it should and you not get the full benefit of the exhaust part.
@@SeanCC i am not sure if you are aware of this, but every car has 2x O2 sensors, one is before the CAT, and the other is after the CAT. The O2 sensor before the CAt, is the O2 sensor responsible for your mixture. It tells the computer if you have a lean mixture or a rich mixture, based on the amount of oxygen that was burned, or unburned. Every single car does run slightly rich, to burn all the oxygen since, if oxygen was detected, it means there was not enough fuel to use up all the oxygen..... Now that was the O2 sensor before the CAT... However the O2 sensor thats sits after the CAT, is there to measure the CAT's effectiveness... Thats all it does. It is not used for anything else. Its not used for the mixture or anything. It is there purely, and solely for the purpose of detecting if the CAT is working, or not.
That noise your clutch makes is your throw out bearing going out. Get it replaced before it leaves you stranded. My did that for a few months, then just completely went out 1 day. I had to call a tow truck. The Quill that the bearing rides on is made out of aluminum, and the bearing is steel, so the bearing creates a groove on the quill. If you're getting it replaced, put a steel sleeve over the quill with an oversized bearing. At least that's how it was on my 2008.
@@mi95her it depends ALOT on how you drive it. I can get 23 city and 30 highway if i drive fuel efficiently. On the other hand, if you are in boost alot you can literally watch the gas gauge go down. Ive blown through a 1/4 tank in 20min. So its up to you, gas can get pretty pricey especially since you should use 91-93 octane. But its a super fun car and makes it all worth it especially once you start modding it.
Still enjoying my 2015 WRX. Only complaint is a squeaky clutch pedal every once and awhile... And that noise you mention (at 9:07) when the engine is cold. All told, a solid vehicle that's really fun to drive!
I was specifically looking for long term WRX review to understand what to expect from those when shopping used, but didn't find any some time ago, and now youtube just suggested it to me. (They knew I'm still interested :D) Thanks dude!
I have a 2018 WRX Sport Tech RS (Canadian Model). I love it, it has the Recaro seats and I did have to fiddle around with them to find a good seating position but because of the 8 way power adjustablity, I was able to find a good comfy position. When I first found out that my car had the Recaros, I was a bit worried as I am 6 foot 3 and 285 pounds. I was worried that the width of the seats would be too narrow(Mitubishi Lancer Evo) but I fit in perfectly. Great video and thanks for the insight into owning a WRX long term!!
My Nissan Sentra had the EXACT same check engine light related to temperature, it never failed. It was essentially the mass air flow sensor and carbon build up in the intake manifold. Unfortunately the dealer had to fix due codes on the mass air flow sensor, cost me about $600.00 and the issue has never happened since.
Just hit 85K miles on my 2015. Had to replace clutch because of throw out bearing noise and odd rattle related to clutch a year ago and has been fine since. Random P0420 code. Code clearing will go weeks or months between occurrences. Appears to be the most common code on WRXs since the dawn of time. Cruise not working is the only reason I even bother resetting it as it doesn't present any other symptoms.
You are essentially speaking to me. I agree with every assessment and issue. My clutch was replaced at 52k, my AC condenser is being replaced on Tuesday. My seat bracket completely rusted out, they're also replacing that on Tuesday, all under warranty. The clutch is exactly what you said, basically uncomfortable to the press. I do keep my seat upright and a bit close to the column, but it does suck any way you set it. Thank you for this 5 year review. I bought mine at 11 miles, currently have 66k. Keeping until 90kish
I bought a 2018 wrx from auto source its branded title. When the vehicle was wrecked it didn't look too bad they had someone put it back to factory spec and did a 151 point inspection. The car has 20k miles bought it for 20k. Its always an option to go branded to get cheaper just do the research and test drive it and see if it runs good. Mine has no issues drives just like new
Even if they don't, the new WRX with the Smaller engine and turbo are just gutless. I feel like my moms Toyota Matrix would keep up and thats just pathetic.
@@chinchy111 This is false. Do more research bud. Is this as reliable as a camry? No. But failing at 100K? If you run it without oil maybe.... Please stop spreading misinformation.
@@DJ_CRIZP type wrx rod knock in youtube. Tons of issues. Yeah some do last over 100k but also theres some that have rod knock at only 50k. they will fail sooner or later. Its a shame because i really wanted to buy a newer wrx. Get one if you reslly want as a weekend car but i would never daily drive one
I remeber watching yours, and just about every 2015 WRX video on youtube back then. I bought the limited in galaxy blue pearl, and have about 60k miles on it now. Just love it. Great to see you post about yours :)
I have 16 wrx, 90k miles, no a/c issue. Heres what ive dealt with, also i dont think ive had as cold temps like you mentioned in VA but i think i can remember a -12f but no check engine light issue. bearing noise in the clutch happend very early with me possible throwout bearing, i just ignored it might of lead to my next issue had pretty catastrophic failure, input shaft bearing failed and ate away at input shaft, replaced with exedy oem clutch kit, replaced transmission, crankshaft position sensor died caused a misfire in a cylinder, a small motor that controls TGV valve failed, battery died after 1 and half years, Bluetooth connectivity issues with stock head unit in the 16 different than the 15, in the 16 it made by Clarion and was by far the worse infotainment system ive experienced , i compare to my wifes honda crv infotainment which is way better than, this was the very first thing i did to my car swapped out to a double din kenwood dmx7705s no cd CD player with that one, paired with a maestro box to retain steering wheel controls and can even tap into odb2 port and display more gauges and more. Seriously subaru is behind the competition in the infotainment department. The call buttons on the wheel to answer and hang up never worked for me idk why. But work with my kenwood so it was something with the head unit. Oh lets not forget stock head unit had no apple car play or andriod auto but 16 had Subaru's verson of those and was complete garbage. Starlink i think what its called. But needed the starlink app on your phone which was garbage as well. Also i upgraded the door speakers to some rockford punch 6.5 speakers Still love the car. Im 100% stock with performance.
Had to have a new small block put in due to a spun barring on cylinder one connecting rod. This happened at 47K miles. Not happy. Was warranty work. Thank God! $7,000....
The only thing I'll disagree with in this video, is the body roll. I have a 19 WRX. I've been on tracks for a long time since before the WRX. And the body roll is horrendous on a track. You don't really feel it too much in regular driving but send it through a turn at speed and you'll almost fall out 😂 in my opinion, coils and swaybars are a must. Great video though man!
I've driven the na 2.5 impreza from 2007 until 2014 and my clutch leg felt some pain on those stop and go hwy jams. As soon as you mentioned that in the video inwas like. Omg my leg knows exactly what you mean!
My 2015 has not had any AC issues (I live in hot/humid Texas). The only issues I've had was the wonky ECU reflash at about 4500 miles, and when it's cold my triple gauge cluster resets to default. It's weird. Otherwise, it's been a solid car.
Late to the comments, but that noise you're hearing might be the thorwout bearing on the clutch. I say this because mine had shattered one day while driving and damaged the trans bell housing. Had to get a new transmission. Mine shattered right around 75-80k miles.
I have a 2015 Subaru Forester XT and I had the same issue of the check engine light coming on when it was cold also, but after 60k on the odometer. Because it was intermittent, it wouldn't hold a code. I finally was able to get a code when the light came on right by an Autozone. I changed out the Fuel/Air sensor, which is after the catalytic converter, with an original Subaru part (Recommended by the Autozone Clerk because said aftermarket sensors are junk. His words, not mine). Expensive, but no problem since, but I went ahead and changed the O2 sensor shortly there after. Both were caked with soot due to normal oil burn Subaru turbo engines are known for. My only mods are a 2015 STI mid-pipe and mufflers, along with an AEM dry filter.
I had a 2011 and my biggest complaint was that my 2015 did not pull through to the redline, it just died off. Totally agree the Cobb Accessport fixed that issue.
ROAD NOISE - I had to put dynamat in all the doors and dynapad under the carpet in my 2017 WRX. And tire selection helps - my Michelin Pilot Sport 4s are quieter than the original Dunlop, and my Michelin IceX xi3 winter tires are quieter than my old Yokahama Ice Guard.
The check engine light and no cruise control is a subaru thing. My 2007 subaru has had its check engine light on for a while so I have not had cruisr control since I got my UeL header installed on my 2.5i.
I've had my 2017 base model (completely stock) for 3 years now 32,000 miles, only problems i had was my battery died out around 20k miles and sometimes (but not very often) while idling my rpms will bog down for like a second and go back to normal idle, this has only happened a handful of times. My clutch pedal squeaks, Sometimes i notice it sometimes i don't. On really cold days my windshield creaks in the exact same spot. Clutch still feels really tight. The sound system is worse than my 2003 jeep Grand Cherokee, But from what I've read if you change the head unit its a lot better. The car has been extremely reliable and very fun to drive.
My 2015 is bone stock, dealer maintained early and all recommended services done. Always warmed before stomping on it, always cooled before shutdown. Scavenger pump leaked oil at 45k mi. And just detonated a rod at 82k mi. The rods are weak sauce. Let’s see if the Dealer and SOA want to do the right thing and make me whole...
I would honestly skip buying a subie until we see what the next gen wrx and Sti will be and how Subaru will address their quality control now that they are growing so big and are cutting corners like mass lay offs of veteran technicians and trying to get out of warranty claims something I seen first hand with my friends crosstrek burying oil like crazy yet Subaru just tells them it’s normal all cars do that it really hurts them when it starts spreading on the news too
Clutch pedal noise is the throw out bearing VERY WELL KNOWN WRX ISSUE. I have a 2017 and it caused major issues and basically destroyed my transmission, which was replaced by Subaru under warranty(@90k miles thankfully i had the extended to 100k miles)
7:19 those are the exact same lights that came on when i cleaned the intake manifold with cdc gdi valve and turbo cleaner, and the maf sensors with maf sensor cleaner. it also disabled cruise control. i drove the car afterwards with the lights still on and it felt fine, pulled over and used the ap to clear the codes and they haven't come back. i drove my 18 wrx in -4F, -35F windchill weather in canada once and no cel, but maybe its just not old enough yet. i sure hope thats one thing that they fixed over the years.
Dang 71.000 miles? That’s a lot! I have a 2015 WRX and I only have 54.000 miles on it. I haven’t had any problems so far thank God. I live here in Phoenix Az were it gets really hot. So my subie is in the hot sun.
16" since new running Stage run1 OTS map with 50k ....Things I've done so far are change the battery once and 3 TSB. AC Compressor (which was working fine) Turbo air duct TOB change (whistle)
Agree, the seats are horrible. Stock tune is really choppy on the accelerator. Clutch squeak is random. Also there's a rear window rattle during cold ass days. Other than that, it's a fun awd car. 😊👍
have a 15...85k miles no issues whatsoever....had a recall on the ecu flash and a subwoofer clip....do my own maintenance oil changes are easy cleaning the intake valves not so much......limited cvt every option all stock....for you haters I have a 6 speed literbike...
Yep still have mine new from 2015. Put on winter tires best mod ever ! super fun car no issue so far 60.000 miles. our 2014 WRX and we had a 2013 forester that blew the motor with less than 20,000. Super fun car highly recomend this car I kinda like the looks of the 2014 better but the 2015 is a better handling car.
Also Ive had a few "fast cars" 2001 Camaro SS was my first ( heads cam exhaust) and a 2008 Z06. S0 I have something to compare it too. I think the handling is great and it packs a punch when you need it. The AWD is about as good as it gets. If you are looking at a WRX I would go for the 2015 or newer. MPG has been 27 mpg for AWD thats amazing
Cruise control death is a "Safety" feature. Think about it. 20 degrees means there is high possibility of ice. Cruise control isnt a great idea under icy conditions. Pretty smart, if you think about it.
You get check engine when it's cold because your thermostat is going. If the code says something like cooling system performance or something along those lines, it's almost certainly Thermostat. When those things start to go, they don't close fast enough and check engine light comes on. As it gets worse, the thermostat will be in always open state. Anyway, have it checked or DIY. I don't know how hard it is to get to it on rex's.
I've had my 19 WRX for a year. My only complaint is the rev hang. However when the AC is on, the RPM's will almost immediately drop to idle when the clutch is depressed. Also, the recaros are great
Your clutch sound is pedal assembly or the throwout bearing. It happened twice in my '15 WRX. If you're still in your warranty I would go in a get a new clutch. The have replaced the clutch in the '16 and then the '18 or '19 year model with bigger stronger clutches. So an car needing replacements will get the newer clutch.
Literally all that clutch issue is, is the spot where the clutch slave cylinder moves in the transmission. It’s right under intercooler, under the dust rubber boot on there, you can see a little thing that pushes in and out, you put some grease on that and the squeak goes away, along with your gritty clutch feel I’m assuming you also have.
Hey guys there are tons of great comments and questions here. I started answering some but figured a follow up video reading through some of these comments and questions would be even better! Look out for that follow up in about week or so.
The check engine light is due to the heated seats being on! i had the same issue so I have stopped turning them on. Havent gotton a check engine light since
Durring the winter!
Damn you have more miles on your WRX than my 2012 hatch lol.
is your car manuel?
that sound you hear on cold starts is normal because of the air injection pump is kicking on.
Finally someone who has a proper experience with their car unlike the rest of the people who only had 1 year experience
SupraAsaiN if that
TheMetalGuy852 that’s because you love the gti more. Interesting rant tho.
TheMetalGuy852 ok I ain’t reading your essay. Enjoy your check engine lights.
@TheMetalGuy852 the dunlops are awful?
I was driving a 98 camry 5 speed, and I upgraded to the 2016 WRX with 82k miles. This car is something special.
Alex Loutchii thanks for the info
I got mine covered until a recall. Look into it. This is on a 2016 wrx bought brandnew also.
Trev Rebel
There is no such recall
My 2011 WRX does it on humid days and it eventually goes away.
Same thing with engine noise. Clutch release bearing. Subaru replaced under drive train warranty. 17 wrx base.
ProjectWRX15 is the type of guy not to talk about the quirks and features of this car.
Who told this man it was a good idea to talk about the car with just his head sticking out 5 feet behind the car😂😂😂😂
Roast his ass lol
He's been serious, its all about thecar
Lmfao!!!
No haters
Nick P Maybe Doug DeMuro😂😂
I just got a 2015 wrx I love it! 70k miles it really is amazing great for my son very safe, AND WHEN HE'S NOT IN THE CAR, the pulls are amazing! I love the sound of the stock turbo

@@KaCing818 damn nice
@@KaCing818 shit I bought a 2015 wrx 65k miles for 24k
Ok 6 years is coming up. Im interested in hearing about your wrx. Please
Good stuff, thanks! I have 275,000 km's on my 2009 wrx hatch now. It's still a blast and running strong
Would you recommend getting one?
Had mine for five years too.
Did all my own maintenance & have had no actual issues.
How is the price on maintenance?

5 yrs old, 26k miles, daily driver
1. AC problem fixed with a condenser replacement. It's a known Subaru issue after 2 yrs or so where it leaks.
2. Pre FW update and maybe a bad fuel load caused a spark plug to go bust. Only had to change 1.
3. Revving on a cold engine gets a CEL for "stuck
intake sensor".
Nothing harmful, just annoying.)
as someone that just bought a 2021 base wrx, it is sad seeing you get rid of this car. passing the torch so to speak!
I just bought a 2018 Limited. I love it! Thanks for the video! I'm in cincy as well.
Had my 2001 Forester GT for 14 yrs, bloody good engine
I just bought a 16 wrx used, had it a month. I love it
Also mine came with 18 inches sti rims
Hey I just bought a 2016 Wrx about a week ago, have you noticed any noises or anything?
That check engine light in the winter time is for the coolant. I had the same problem and I changed the coolant and it stopped
Well its probably time to upgrade
I bought mine with 25 miles on it at the end of 2015, it’s a 2016 and I just crossed 115k miles. It has been a solid car despite the fact I do drive it hard. Most surprisingly is the clutch is still factory.
Quick question, do you still have the car and did you come across any problems?
2016 owner with 108k. Spend: O2 sensor at 24k, AC at 90k. 100k maintenance with belt change, and recently clutch with master and slave valve replacement. No launching
I currently own a 19 STI. I used to have a 16 WRX. In the 16 WRX, I had a few complaints from my passengers getting car sick when going up back roads.
Chad Chapman 😂
Chad Chapman how does the sti fix the car sickness lol. If anything, shouldn’t it be worse for that given the stiffer ride and noisier motor
Flaw A friend of mine who is an adrenaline junkie who rarely gets car sick got car sick in my STI
Nicolas A The STI is what I always wanted. I also had frequent dreams about trading in the WRX for the STI.
The chemicals in cloth seats make me car sick especially when it's hot
Good review.
also i have the same wheels, just a little wider. 18x9,5 +38.

I plan to do less to it than you did to your WRX so it’s nice to have a good frame of reference reliability wise since it’s a car I plan on driving it for 5-7 years 👍
Dunno why youtube didn't recommend this video to me sooner, so in-depth and helpful.
Had a 2010 wrx for 4 years , shared a lot of things you mentioned . This is a Subaru wrx thing . I still miss the power and AWD .
To fix the check engine light due to a cat delete what you do is get a special adapter that moves your O2 sensor out of the flow of the exhaust gas. on your downstream O2 sensor
Or you get it properly tuned.
@@SeanCC Like i said moving the O2 sensor out of the flow of exhaust gasses with an adapter will fix the problem
Thank you so much for all of your time and important information. I just purchased a used 2015 WRX and I love every moment I am driving it.
The road noise definitely improved in the 2018’s
That noise your clutch makes is your throw out bearing going out. Get it replaced before it leaves you stranded. My did that for a few months, then just completely went out 1 day. I had to call a tow truck. The Quill that the bearing rides on is made out of aluminum, and the bearing is steel, so the bearing creates a groove on the quill. If you're getting it replaced, put a steel sleeve over the quill with an oversized bearing. At least that's how it was on my 2008.
I have 85k on my 15 wrx. No issues. Do all maintenance myself. It’s a daily driver.
I heard these cars waste gas like a v8 is that true? Thinking about getting one myself 🤔
I'm in love with this car. Driving 3 years. I have liquified Petroleum Gas powered WRX.
Still enjoying my 2015 WRX. Only complaint is a squeaky clutch pedal every once and awhile... And that noise you mention (at 9:07) when the engine is cold. All told, a solid vehicle that's really fun to drive!
Throw out bearing
The newest trend is to tell everyone how you're not Doug Demuro...
Do you have a extended warranty for the clutch and AC? had mine 6 years with 39k miles and AC acts up.
Mine has no issues drives just like new
Changing the gas cap fixed the check engine light for me
Dude this is legit the video I wanted to see. Just started looking today and I was worried the 15' would have a ton of issues

I have 16 wrx, 90k miles, no a/c issue. Heres what ive dealt with, also i dont think ive had as cold temps like you mentioned in VA but i think i can remember a -12f but no check engine light issue.
bearing noise in the clutch happend very early with me possible throwout bearing, i just ignored it might of lead to my next issue
had pretty catastrophic failure, input shaft bearing failed and ate away at input shaft, replaced with exedy oem clutch kit, replaced transmission,
crankshaft position sensor died caused a misfire in a cylinder,
a small motor that controls TGV valve failed,
battery died after 1 and half years,
Bluetooth connectivity issues with stock head unit in the 16 different than the 15, in the 16 it made by Clarion and was by far the worse infotainment system ive experienced , i compare to my wifes honda crv infotainment which is way better than, this was the very first thing i did to my car swapped out to a double din kenwood dmx7705s no cd CD player with that one, paired with a maestro box to retain steering wheel controls and can even tap into odb2 port and display more gauges and more.
Also i upgraded the door speakers to some rockford punch 6.5 speakers
Still love the car.
Nicholas Harrikissoon I plan on getting a 2019 STI good to know! 👍
I’ve had 2015 since April of 2014, about 7 years old I was the first in my state to get one and I haven’t no problems with mine….
I also purchased my 2015 with 7 miles on the odometer lol. Currently sitting at 110k. I have replaced transmision, clutch, rear diff, and ac comp.
2 years 7 months of ownership 60k miles. A/C compressor went out recently. No other issues yet.
2 years 7 months 38 k miles. No issues at all for me 😊

Ugh this car is my dream ❤️❤️ it’s never at my price range but one day I’ll have this one day 🥰🥰 I’m praying either next year or this year
My 17 year old sister got a used 2016 from my dads friend for 17K lemme tell ya great car...
This was always my dream car too. Just picked up a 2020 last week. Work hard and keep your eye on the prize and you will make it happen.
I've also had mine since 8 miles were on the clock. At over 91k right now.
My only mods are a 2015 STI mid-pipe and mufflers, along with an AEM dry filter.
camaraderie among all owners!
but I wish the cabin light would go off when the engine is stopped and the car is parked...
I had a 04 WRX (302AWHP) and she was amazing, can't beat that awd and rumble, I would for sure get another Subaru.
Dude, there is a recall for the cold temps causing the check engine light.
Let’s see if the Dealer and SOA want to do the right thing and make me whole...
that whine in the engine when you push in the clutch is the throwout bearing. the clutch hits it
I would honestly skip buying a subie until we see what the next gen wrx and Sti will be and how Subaru will address their quality control now that they are growing so big and are cutting corners like mass lay offs of veteran technicians and trying to get out of warranty claims something I seen first hand with my friends crosstrek burying oil like crazy yet Subaru just tells them it’s normal all cars do that it really hurts them when it starts spreading on the news too
Clutch pedal noise is the throw out bearing VERY WELL KNOWN WRX ISSUE.
AC Compressor (which was working fine)
Turbo air duct
TOB change (whistle)
Agree, the seats are horrible. Stock tune is really choppy on the accelerator. Clutch squeak is random. Also there's a rear window rattle during cold ass days. Other than that, it's a fun awd car. 😊👍
have a 15...85k miles no issues whatsoever....had a recall on the ecu flash and a subwoofer clip....do my own maintenance oil changes are easy cleaning the intake valves not so much......limited cvt every option all stock....for you haters I have a 6 speed literbike...
really like the blue...mines grey
im 5'5 and the seats are great! my passangers also love them. thenm again im not high maintenance.
I don't know how hard it is to get to it on rex's.
i love subaru wrx’s,finally i find someone i like to watch😂
I've had my 19 WRX for a year. My only complaint is the rev hang. However when the AC is on, the RPM's will almost immediately drop to idle when the clutch is depressed. Also, the recaros are great
Thanks for sharing! Love that blue color and it looks great with the wheels. I bought a 2020 a few months ago.
