    That survey literally puts me in an opposite situation to most users then. I use my Deck primarily for cartoony/anime/indie titles which require little to no power (I played the entirety of Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal, Gris, Final Fantasy XIV, Brawlhalla, Hi-Fi Rush, and games similar to those on it) and some Switch emulation and I'm perfectly satisfied with the power of the Steam Deck. There's no way I'll put on an AAA game if I already have a PS5 and a gaming PC. I got a 64GB Steam Deck and a 512GB SD card and I have no storage issues either. I can't praise the Deck enough honestly, for my use case it's been perfect.

    As a game developer I definitely don't find the Steam Deck to be lacking performance, the opposite is true... I am amazed over how much performance the machine has, and was stunned that I was able to run my own game in 4K ~120fps at 15W... (It's a high-res 2D game similar to ubiart games, but still. That's off the chart! I use 20+ parallax layers, over 1500 2D objects on each scene).... I actually have to use my thermally constrained Ryzen 2500U laptop to gauge performance and optimizations instead of the Steam Deck. For me it has become important to reach 6hours+ of battery life when running at 720p60fps on battery. :)

      Indeed, its blown me away more than once with its ability to deal with 1080P on the external monitor with reasonably turned up graphics settings on so many titles and then go down to 8w power target and play those same games on battery for a long time with good enough performance on its screen. Yes I've found the odd thing that won't work that well on deck, but most games even very modern ones work great on deck at native resolution.

    Man i played Cyberpunk on the Deck after the update and was blown away by the experience. Optimization goes a long way! We shouldn't always have to buy new hardware to play the newest games. Games just need to be better optimized. The steam deck is plenty capable!

    • @InitialFailure
      @InitialFailure 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @shawng9541 I get that personal experience is anecdotal and subjective. What's not subjective is raw numbers, and it's objectively true that one of the worst ways to play Cyberpunk2077 is on a Deck.
      It's awesome that you enjoyed the relative (to almost any other way to play it) sub-par experience. It is very difficult to achieve 30 FPS (stable) even now, let alone a "golden 40". If that's mind-blowing to you, fantastic, I am genuinely happy for you.
      Truly, that's fantastic.
      However, for those wondering if the Deck is some sort of uber device capable of playing the latest AAA titles for what an average gamer is after in regards to performance, it's arguably and almost decidedly not. Yes, optimization happens. However, Valve can only push that hardware so far while Ally and Go (hardware wise) is almost twice the horse power and nowhere near as optimized YET.
      What I'm seeing more and more is mental gymnastics justifying a purchase or brand loyalty over cold hard facts. The same behavior PC enthusiasts have judged console gamers for, over years and years.
      Now PC gamers get to fanboy over a console 😆 🤣 😂

    • @stacybava4526
      @stacybava4526 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@InitialFailure I think the biggest failure is in marketing, sure people feel that Cyberpunk or other big AAA games in recent years don't run the best, but in reality Valve should push this more towards what it's really for, that being Indie games or older AA/AAA games that already run on mid tier hardware.
      A Steam Deck should be your companion to your PC, you have your big, beefy PC for playing every big, graphically intense AAA game, and you have your steam deck for everything else, and you can still play that everything else on your PC.
      As someone who regularly plays Cyberpunk on my 4090, why would I ever want to give up the top graphics settings for anything near a handheld anyway? I can play full 4K, with RTX and Path Tracing, so it makes no sense for me to play that on a handheld regardless of brand, but what the Steam Deck is made for, is games that I just wanna chill with sometimes, or grind on that don't demand.
      Yakuza games, Persona games, and so on, I've been playing Dome Keeper, Celeste, Risk of Rain 2/Risk of Rain Returns, Dishonored 2, Days Gone, Shadow of War, Persona 5 Royal, Cult of the Lamb, and Monster Hunter World, and that's not even scratching the surface.
      Out of my nearly 500 games library on steam I've spent buying and collecting and playing games on PC I've already installed nearly 100 on my steam deck, and every new sale, the Fall/Halloween and now the Christmas sale I've been looking for games that fit what the steam deck actually does, and it's been a blast. I think Valve or consumers just have to realize handhelds for the foreseeable future are and will never be a replacement for a PC, more of a companion piece you play your backlog or replay older games you fell in love with and haven't caught back up with yet.
      EDIT: And I forgot to even bring up but like the video says, emulation as well, so combine every talking point above then combine it with playing nearly every retro to current gen console on the steam deck practically flawlessly (Only the Switch being a little subpar depending on what game you're playing, and I haven't tested PS3/Xbox 360) I have practically every SNES/N64/GBA and that era on my deck, combined with select games from PS1/PS2 that I love all on my deck as well, boosting it even further for me.

    • @InnuendoXP
      @InnuendoXP 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Honestly, if you think back to the PSP & Vita days where it felt like a portable release was always about 5 years behind the console releases, and usually pretty heavily compromised at that.
      Steam Deck feels like now all of a sudden you have day & date with the consoles practically, and anything that scales down to the Series S will usually work well enough on Steam Deck. I don't expect this to be the case for the whole console gen, but incredibly even Alan Wake has been made to run acceptably on it.
      CPU limitations being the biggest limiting factor, but honestly incredible otherwise as you can throw absolutely anything from the previous console gen at it. And if Steam Deck 2 comes out in 2025/6 with performance comparable to a PS5 then that'll just be an incredible time for everyone.

    • @yellowblanka6058
      @yellowblanka6058 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@InnuendoXPI wouldn't go THAT far - the Series S, while by far the weakest of the modern consoles is still CONSIDERABLY more powerful than the Steam Deck - the Steam Deck is, at least where its APU/GPU is concerned, about equivalent to a PS4. I'm sure there are quite a few games that work reasonably well on Series S that will not run on the Deck. But then, that's the difference between mobile vs. console hardware, one has stricter heat/power/PCB size restrictions than the other.

    • @InnuendoXP
      @InnuendoXP 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@yellowblanka6058 I never said the deck was as powerful as the S (though the APU is WAY more powerful than a PS4), I said games which scale down to the S so far, have usually found a way to scale to the deck as well. That I didn't expect this for every game, but so far most do, including Alan Wake & Starfield.
      Keep in mind the difference in target resolution, the deck has a 1MP screen, while the S is targeting 1080p, or 2MP, so double. Which means model & texture detail can be scaled even lower without a perceptible difference in quality.
      It also has more user control in further settings reductions, ability to set more intermediary locked framerates when 30fps simply won't do like a stable 40 or 45fps.
      Sure I don't expect GTA VI to run on the deck, but the games which don't work so far have been more due to platform limitations such as anticheat not playing ball with Proton, than not running in a playable state after some tweaking.
      The 4 Zen 2 cores being slower is its biggest hard limit & games hitting the CPU end to be 30FPS limited on the main consoles where graphics reductions couldn't make them break 45, will probably not run on the deck. But again, no significant examples of that so far.
      Again my point isn't that it can do everything the consoles can, it's that unless there's a fundamental base hardware performance reason that it can't, then it can if a PC port exists, and for most games, that's the case. As opposed to the Nintendo Switch Vs the PS4 where you're often waiting a year or more for the port and it's much more compromised when it arrives.

    • @cyberedge881
      @cyberedge881 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes, exactly. It runs basically everything from last gen and prior to that. So, it's fantastic for emulation, indy games, and AAA from last gen and before. Moreover, it CAN run most AAA games from the current gen. It might not be at the quality or framerate you would ideally want, but it usually can be done. And that is amazing to me.
      Now, not every AAA game is going to run at a quality level I find to be worth it. But that's okay. It's why I own a powerful desktop PC. The Steam Deck is incredible for running all my AAA games from generations past, thousands of amazing indy games, and a nearly endless world of emulation. Plus, it can run many current gen AAA games if I'm really desperate to keep playing certain of them while away from the house. That all adds up to one incredible handheld gaming device.

    The popularity of the deck and the progress Valve helped on the linux gaming front, made me more comfortable to begin migrating to Linux as my main OS for daily use. And so far, all of my windows games on my Steam library play about as well as they do on windows using Proton on my Linux KDE Plasma.

They've made it all so accessible AND THEN SOME! It's starting to satisfy my emulation itch in a big way, (nearly because I'm literally walking to Office Max for my 128GB usbc disk drive).
    I could make a whole video about how the steam deck is changing gaming for me and for the world at large (not all countries yet, I know). Emulation looks like an absolute breeze and I just pray that we can all continue to dive into the classics this way while the gaming industry is still able to thrive and employees are still able to get paid well for their efforts.
    I personally believe that gaming will occupy a MUCH MUCH LARGER PART OF OUR LIVES moving into the future. And I also believe that Ready Player one was as accurate as the novel 1984 and that these are events that are soon to come and to be lived through. Anyway, steam stands a big chance of being a part of this future, if not one of the key companies running the show so to speak.

    As someone who almost exclusively plays Indie and AA titles I see the Steam Deck as a nice addition to anyone within this spectrum. AAA titles aren't really my thing, so I don't need all that much power to begin with, but any game I own that was installed ran it perfectly fine even a few that people said had frame rate issues. I am also on the side that only glances at the playability since often times the reason why a game isn't is because it isn't immediately download and play with 0 tinkering. There might be some mouse selections or have to input text of some kind. I get around this by mapping mouse movement to the right track pad and mouse left click to it's press (fully assuming that I might run into an issue where the touch screen is un-usable to advance). And either mapping a back trigger to pull up the keypad or just steam button + x. For most who can get around the settings this isn't that hard to do, guide or not.

    I think they'll do a mild update, something with the display maybe an OLED. And then improving battery life slightly and then increasing the ram speed. Also, I could possibly see Steam doing a limited release with a translucent shell. Don't hold me to this, however let's see what time will tell.

    Are we forgetting you can just have an external drive in your dock for games you only want to play on a bigger screen or KB&m?
    The flexibility of the feature set on offer is crazy. I’ve never touched Linux before and I have used the deck as my pc for around a year now.
    I still try to learn Linux stuff but I have never been good at syntax and whatnot.

    It makes sense that the 64 GB model is growing in popularity tbh. In the early days of the Steam Deck, people were very unsure about replacing the drive. But now the drives have gotten a bit cheaper, and when you look on the subreddit, buying that model and replacing the drive is the most popular recommendation in most cases.
    Buying the 64 GB model and upgrading to 1 TB was cheaper than buying the 512 GB for me, and that's accounting for the fact I had to pay extra to import from outside my region!

    The thing that bugs me about "steam verified" is If you're on desktop, Steam it doesn't tell you if a game is verified or not at a glance. It's only when you're using a Steam Deck do you see the verification icons while browsing the store.

      It's not very accurate so probably for the best. It was probably introduced more as a carrot for game devs to get their game working on the 'Deck, not something for users.

    It's actually Windows thats holding portable consoles back, because both the Deck and the Ally work better on Linux regarding configuration, controller + setup and UX especially for "touch displays and button pressing" - it was reported more than once that you need keyboard and mouse to fight your way through a Windows install.
    Also, support for Vulkan has grown and OpenGL is a well established standard both of which are supported very well on Linux, so for there to be no DX10/DX11/DX12 is not much of a hurdle.

    This has always been a problem with portable consoles. Technically you could make the console more powerful, but you also have to factor in the Battery life. If people aren't complaining about one thing, its the other. They really found the sweet spot with the Deck. But a newer model would need both an upgraded APU as well as battery, which would effect the cost, and make it less consumer friendly. The Steam deck is less then 2 years old. So we shouldn't expect a Steam Deck 2 with the same price tag for at least another 2-5 years.

    It surpassed my expectations. A year ago, I only bought a steam deck to play Kingdom Hearts, but i beat Cyberpunk, Starfield, Guardians of the Galaxy, FF7 RE, Elden Ring, Hogwarts, Ratchet, Crash bandicoot 4, Lies of P on it. I didn't expect all of them to work so well.

    Considering how the Steam deck runs circles around its competition at lower watts I can kind of see why Valve doesn't see the performance needing to change. 10 watts or less is really where you can get lots of battery life as well as them putting official undervolt support in the bios. What I think they should be doing is trying to change gamers expectations. The steam deck was really made for 30fps gaming which console gamers have been having fun with for over a decade at this point. I used to get the hate for 30fps but I kind of lost it when I went through 2 GPU shortages without a GPU and then finally settled on getting a steam deck instead of a GPU since I always wanted a computer handheld. I've been playing Armored Core 6 which runs fine at 10 watt TDP lock 30fps high settings for about 3 hours of battery life and if I turn things down and FSR the resolution a bit I can run it at 5 watt TDP lock and get over 5 hours of battery life. I'm not playing every game but I'm not sure there's not a game the deck can't play at a 30fps yet so it technically doesn't need more power yet. More power would be great for docked play but I feel Valve took the approach of making the deck with handheld first and docked play second.

      I can buy it several ways here but not like we can by the Ally here. I got 5yrs warranty with it. If I by a Steam Deck through the only ways we can here, there is no warranty or anywhere I can just walk into and get it repaired. Very disheartening. Just wish the day came, that I could open up steam and find it available to order from the launcher.
      Maybe if there is ever a Deck 2 we might be lucky enough to have an opportunity.

    My biggest hang up on the Steamdeck is that it’s built and looked at as a SECONDARY device. I want a portable PRIMARY device. Nintendo nailed it with the Switch, Valve could have built a direct competitor, but it constantly feels like they cheaped out.

    DS and 3DS have plenty of games that can be played primarily or even fully with physical buttons. At which point the only thing that is a problem is putting two screens onto one. Many games also use the second screen just for minimap, or even a wallpaper. I don't see playing Trauma Center on SD, but DS castlevanias, Pokémon, most RPGs.... It's all fine.

    I've been running my Deck overclocked for a while, but after the 3.4.11 update reset the BIOS settings, I haven't bothered to re-enable OCing.
    While being able to boost to 3.9GHz is awesome for cutting out the 1% lows on games like _HZD,_ there are so many unoptimized titles that ask for full throttle even though they don't need it (_FFX-2_) where I find myself having to militantly set performance profiles.
    The bottom line is that I'd rather have longer battery life at lower FPS than the other way around.

    I mostly play older games on The Deck, think Skyrim AE, Fallout 4, Dying Light, Metro series, MineCraft JAVA, and such. I also do emulation and I play modern indie games - most recent indie title was Sea of Stars, which is an awesome game BTW! I have game libraries in all PC stores and just run those stores via SteamOS with Proton.

    I have played “unplayable” games with little issues on the steam deck. It’s not an all in one replacement and you still need a main pc; however, I honestly think it runs everything that it needs to great. It’s not like the steam deck is an esports machine or anything and needs a lot of frames. I’m using it for a lot of story driven, adventure, or sandbox games.
