Every time I click on a Marcel and Libby video, I need to buy a new piece of audio gear 😎. Love your content and contribution to audio and field recording.
Ha Ha Ha :) Thank you...
haha true, most expensive YT Channel
Yep I bought two after watching this. Hopefully I can discover some uses for "stereo" contact recording
Results not too shabby at all. Cheers for the video!
I love your videos. Thank you so much for making and sharing them. Wishing you all the best!
This is a perfect mic for someone who just starts and wants to get into it, appreciate the video.
Glad you liked it!! 😁
Saving this video to watch it while traveling 👍
Another great video! So much inspiration to draw from just by walking around. I have a Korg contact mic in my shopping cart now!
Also, Marcel, your outfit is on point!
Thank you Fernando! :)
Thanks Marcel. Great to see you and Libby back. Really enjoyed that and I think it's definitely well worth getting one for $15. I've been a little bit disappointed with the JRF contact mics I bought. You never know how best to attach them to the surface. They can sound so different if you use tape, stickies, BluTack, or clamps. You also need an XLR impedance adaptor to get the most out of them.
Anyway, thanks for the video. Great stuff as usual.
Yeah I thought about them a while back but never bought it. There is another company called Cold Gold and they make the craziest contact microphones. I order one when we go back to the US.
Very affordable! Thank you for recommendation.
You are so welcome!
This video comes just at the right time as I am looking for contact microphones... 😅
We are on time Dominik :)
thankyou, got it yesterday
a great budget contact mic made in Viet Nam
That’s great! We hope you can record some great sounds with it!
Wow! Where do you buy it? It's much better than a very ordinary piezo. I'm interested in having results like that. Thank you.
Ohhh I wanted a contact microphone for a while!
For the price you can't make anything wrong with this one :)
Me too, just ordered one 🙂 update, I ordered two for under £20 on Amazon and I also ordered an adapter with a male mini jack so that I can attach to my Sony recorder. I’m excited, such a cheap thrill, literally 🙂
I collect sounds also... I carry many different contact piezo and hydromicrophones, shotgun and measurement microphones... along with a telescoping boom. I use the Roland R-44, Zoom H8, and Fostex MR-8, depending on the environment I am recording.
What do you do with them? Or do you capture for its own sake?
Vielen dank 🙏
Pleasure!
Definitely buying one lol
Libby, wonderful Storytelling and Cut in the Videos. May I ask, how many seconds are you usually recording your B roll? 10-15 seconds? Sure only when nothing special happens like Marcel is walking by.
Thanks Florian! Typically around 15 seconds or longer if there isn’t any action at the moment. I always try to have buffer so I can use the audio between cuts.
Another awesome video! 🤗
Bit of a newbie question maybe, but to plug this into a zoom H1N would I need to use a 1/4 mono to 1/8 stereo adapter or would both ends being mono be ok?
Thanks so much! 🤗
Hey Marcel and Libby, thanks for another great video - and great IG content as well, I've really been enjoying that! Just out of curiosity, are you still using your AKG contact mics, or have you fallen out of love with them?
I thought I responded to your comment but it seems like its gone? I wish I still had it but it broke :(
@@FreeToUseSounds Oh no! Thus is life I suppose. Gear fails unfortunately, especially when you use it a lot. Microphone companies should innovate in the field of contact mics the way they do with traditional studio mics. Maybe then we'd have a durable option with no handling noise! And maybe a knob to tune the sensitivity of the mic for the specific characteristics of the source... That would be interesting!
@@freewheelinghorn Actually there is small company called Cold Gold Contact Microphone. This stuff what they have is awesome. When we go back to the US we order a bunch but check it out.
@@FreeToUseSounds wow their stuff looks cool, thanks for the heads up!
Wow~~~~!, You have been in Korea. I live in Seoul and big fan of you guys. What's your plan in Korea?
Ahh we lived one month in Seoul…Now Busan :)
Super bro..
Thank you!
Hi! I just found your channel. I want to start with some cheap equipment & this seems perfect. Can i use this mic with a Zoom H1n by plugging it in directly? Does the Zoom model affect the quality of the recording? In the future if i plan on buying the akg c411pp or the Soma Ether ii, will those work directly plugged into the Zoom H1n?
Sorry, these are a lot of questions! I'm just very excited!
Zoom H1n can only power other microphones by bias (plug-in power) you can read about good external microphones on acousticnature Jared's blog. H1n does not have xlr input. Also h1n does not have phantom power. If your nicro require phantom power then find better recorder.
does it work for dialogue in an actor?
Good day and thanks for this. Is there a way to adapt / connect the KORG CM300 which I think uses a 1/4" TS cable to an XLR input? Thank you.
With an adapter
I wonder if you were using the field recording preset on the X8 with that kind of mic.
Hi! Oh no, I don't need to use any kind of presets.
wow!
I am your Korean subscriber
Welcome to Korea :)
Thank you! 😃
So cool! Can I use it with a zoom h1n?
You would need to either use a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter, or chop the end off the cable and solder a 1/8" on.
which windscreen did you choose for the portacapture x8? I don’t know which one to choose as t’as am didn’t realease a proper one neither as ricotte as far as i know .
thanks for your recommendation
D11 but its not very good.
Oh~ You are in Korea!
Correct:)
8:29 true marine
Amazing video! Do you reckon this mic could be put underwater? Seems risky haha, but looks like the casing might be well-sealed?
Ohh please don't do that. You should get a hydrophone.
@@FreeToUseSounds haha yeah look it doesn’t sound like the greatest idea, was just wondering! Any hydrophones in/close to this budget range you’d recommend?
@@hugoleemusic Not really that I would know of since I only use the Ambient hydrophones. These are outstanding and the best I would recommend. Also Ambient as a company is just amazing. I would recommend asking in the field recording community on Facebook or Reddit.
Is your sound naturally clean or you clean it up in post production?
I'd also like to know
Do you think that zoom h1 with a mini jack adaptor will do the job, or would I need to buy a specific preamp to along with it. I’ve heard that they require a very powerful amplifier.
Hello Michal. I believe it would work with an adapter. If I had one I could try it out so maybe I find one and let you know.
@@FreeToUseSounds Oh, i too would love to know if it is possible to record with Korg CM 300 and the zoom h1n and an 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch (6.35mm female to 3.5mm male) adapter. If you have the possibility to test it out, i would be thankful to let us know the result.
Hi all, I have tested this contact microphone with a Zoom H1n and I can confirm that it works with the adapter but it is mono.
Man, that's great.
I have a CM-300 and I can use it to pick my uke's sound plugging it into my Yamaha THR-10C amp.
Though, I can't make it work with my laptop or my Tascam DR-05 v.2
In my laptop I have a splitter to divide the TRRS input in two separate inputs. If I plug a condenser stereo mic into the mic in, the pc can record my voice but if I plug the Korg in the same input I get no capture at all.
The Tascam has a MIC IN socket and it's stereo. But if I plug the Korg in it I can't get no sound whatever setting I use: phantom on or off, stereo capture or mono mix.
How could I succeed in using the Korg to capture ambient sounds with the Tascam as you do with the X8?
Hi!! Thank you so much for watching!! Hmm that is odd indeed. So just to understand you correctly. You can’t use the Korg with the Tascam at all or only when using it as an interface? Also never have the pp on when using these microphones. You could damage it.
It doesn't work at all; but consider that the DR-05 can't be used as an interface like the DR-05X.
MIC IN is a 3.5 stereo socket, I have to adapt the Korg from 6.3 to 3.5. Might the adapter be faulty? Gonna try both another source with the same adapter or the Korg with a stereo splitter but I haven't one. Any suggestion?
Thanks!
Update: I tried the following things.
1) plugged a stereo cable in my electric guitar and plugged the other end with a 6.3 -> 3.5 stereo adapter in the Tascam, no phantom: it records sound from a single channel and if I change the Tascam settings it records a joint stereo duplicating the mono signal on both channels.
2) plugged the Korg in my Yamaha THR-10C to see if it works. It still works. If I capture the sound from the headphone out of the amp I can record it on the Tascam with a stereo cable.
Then, I fear I have a faulty mono adapter or it somewhat shorts channels in a strange way making the Tascam refuse to capture sound as if both channels were grounded.
I fear I'll have to try with a stereo splitter, 2x6.3 mono female to 1x3.5 stereo male.
Luckily, the Korg hasn't been damaged by Tascam's phantom power.
Hi marcel. Did you use an impedance transformer with the mics for this audio please?
Hi! Oh no I only used a basic adapter.
@@FreeToUseSounds thanks mate. What do you mean by basic adaptor?. I’m thinking of getting a couple of these to plug into my tascam Dr100mkiii. I’ve heard that plugging them into an impedance transformer into the XLR inputs would yield better results. However, im kinda tempted to just plug them into the unit directly via the Jack inputs.
@@EQAVOX Oh, in this video, I'm using the X8, so no adapter was needed. If I were using the F6 or F3, I'd need one since these recorders don't have a dual port. The DR100 has it, so you can plug into this recorder directly. I've also tried using a Fethead in other videos, which worked great. But, when you think about it, pairing a $15 contact microphone with an $80 Fethead might not be the most cost-effective choice. If you are going to process the recordings anyway, just start with the CM 300 and see how it goes.
@@FreeToUseSounds thanks marcel. Appreciate the response and help. Great vid as always 🙌👍
@@EQAVOX You're so welcome! I hope you get some great sounds!! :)
does it need to be used with a preamp or can I use it with only a zoom h5 ?
You mean with the XLR inputs? The H5 has a quarter inch input so you can use it.
@@andrewvlahos8358 thanks !
Hi, Marcel, not in topic, but very important question - did you find any answer how to connect ROLAND CS-10EM to Tascam X8? In Tascam DR100 I can use Ext-In input (but in menu I have to activate plug-in power); in X8 this doesn't work - I plug CS-10EM into Ext-In, but there is no option to activate plug-in power for this input. Did I miss something? :O
Yeah It won’t work with it :(.
@@FreeToUseSounds Hmmm :( I will try to build mini-jack stereo to two mono adapter and... will see ;)
@@GadesChannel Ohh I think you need to bring down the pp to 3 volt or something. Not that you grill them :)
@@FreeToUseSounds Of course, that's why I will build it not buy it ;)
@@GadesChannel I think Soundman made a box like this. Check it out.
Hey can you use this contact microphone with zoom h1?
Hi! Yes that should work but you need an adapter plus change from stereo to mono in the settings.
Wow, why did you come to Korea?
Too many reasons:)
What khz it can record?
about from 27Hz to 4kHz🎉
Does this contact mic need power?
Great question and I think I didn't mention it in the video. It doesn't require phantom power.
0:46 포니 픽업은 한국인도 보기 힘든데 유튜브에서 서울 찍는걸 통해서 보네 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
Here I had gone and spent money on parts to build contact mics and this one is just $15😂
Its a really good price and I know what you mean. I saw other piezo contacts that are much more expensive.
