Thanks,
Libby and Marcel
All your videos are wonderful, informative and so relaxing. I find myself watching for hours.
Thank you for uploading these amazing videos, long back I had bought a h6 and with your videos it go me so much into sound. Now I am working as a location sound mixer too.
Hi Anup! Oh wow!! This is really cool that it all started for you with a H6 :)
Marcel, another great video! I always enjoy watching and listening to your videos, but it occurs to me that much of what I enjoy watching in these videos is because of the outstanding production of these videos. Great work Libby! Love the way these are shot. And thank you for bringing Marcel to us through TH-cam month after month. : )
Thank you so much Gary!! 🙏❤️
The cheap finds are the best for this reason. You never know how they’ll surprise you. Great video Marcel.
Hi Matt! We hope you're doing great! Thank you so much for stopping by.
@@FreeToUseSounds I’m doing well good sir. Hope you and Libby and doing well too.
Of course the low frequency is missing (the "tinny" sound of piezo contact mics) if you just put them into the low-impedance mic input of your recorder. You need a preamp with high-impedance input for the full sound.
Your videos are always inspiring. Thank you
Glad you like them!
“Never underestimate your future self” ….as a man currently at a crossroads, I thank you for that wisdom.
Thank you so much for watching!!
That snow crunch was beauuutiful
Thank you! It was indeed a cool find :)
Great video. How do you document each sound so that you know what it was when editing? Do you take notes or rename the file after recording, or ?
Hello David. Thank you for asking and yes we are editing all sounds. You might want to check out our video about how I'm editing sound effects. Also look into the UCS Category System.
Great video! I use the same mics along with the Korg and I really like them. I have to use impedence transformer to get a bigger sound. It looks like you are using one also.
Hi Cedric. Oh no this is just a basic adapter I got. No impedence transformer.
Awesome, thanks for sharing!
I already ordered 2 of those(or similar-looking) mics. I can't wait to try them in action. I wonder what the low-frequency performance would be with a proper impedance adapter/piezo-optimized preamp. I have a pair of Hosa MIT-129 adapters, but I want to try an active d-box in the future.
Anyway, thanks for a great video, and have a fantastic day!
We hope you have an awesome day too! I try to get one of these adapters in Japan!
Is the noise floor/self noise better on the f3 than on the x8 or x6 tascam??? I purchased an f3 because it specifically advertises "very low self noise", but if the tascam has same or very close noise floor i would rather return it for that. I do mostly quiet ambient recordings of nature.
Considering how difficult it is to purchase a LOM contact mic, have you thought about co-developing a field recording contact mic with an electronics manufacturer? You've had all kinds of experience using them in different situations; it would seem like you'd have a lot of good input on the making of one.
Hi Jason! We did consider that a couple times but it' not easy to develop such a partnership for a couple of reasons.
I'm from Indonesia. Your videos on TH-cam are very inspiring for me just learning about sound.
Thank you!!
Hello do you think I can plug the Korg CM-300-BK directly into a soundcard and record the sound to a DAW ? Thank you for your amazing content !
Hi Tim! Yes I believe that’s possible. You could also use the F3 as an interface and do it that way.
The silica beads in the bowl really inspired me. I am thinking it might be interesting to get two contact mics attatched to the bowl and create a stereo effect. I have been making an "album" of ambient music that includes a lot of field recordings and I love to create sounds that feel like they are surrounding your whole head.
I have a very nice recording of light rain drops hitting a metal gate that I made with my recorders built in microphone. I am now thinking it would be good to make that recording again but use a contact microphone on the gate as well and mix the two types of recording together....... maybe this will sound interesting?
Oh yes, that creates another amazing layer. So that’s a really good idea :)
Do you put your music anywhere once you're finished with your album? I'd love to listen if/once it's available somewhere :))
Very cool video Marcel. I enjoyed that. My favourite was the pipe in the car park coming from the swimming pool. That was pretty awesome. I don't much care how much a contact mic would cost because a sound is a sound, and whatever you catch will be a bit different from others. Never has to be perfect because it's still a sound. Anyway, great video as always. Thanks, and of course thanks to Libby too. Can't forget her can I ? 😀
Thank you for watching, and she says hello and thanks for thinking of her! You're so right about that. All CM sound different and recording sounds in a very different way. Even when placing just a little bit different, it won't be the same.
@@FreeToUseSounds Exactly. Capturing effects like the ones in the video there is no "perfect" sound. They're all different in their own way, and that's what makes them unique. Like I said, a sound is a sound.
thanks for inspiring me to get a contact mic and bust out my audio recorder i haven't used in years! this is brilliant, thanks so much.
Great to hear! :)
I have question : with aa battery:
If you connect two Danton power lavalier microphone, how much battery last.
On my f3 it last only 40 minute around .
( just to check battery i reused it on torch it works fine there ) I don’t know what’s wrong
Great video and it actually works well. I am always curious about how people use all of your sounds. Greg
Thank you for watching Greg!!
Hey Marcel! Thanks for video! As always so inspiring to see you at work 😊 instantly after video I went to online store and buy korg cm300 😂 buuut I wonder is there any microphones/devices similar to lom geofon? I know there is a couple devices for recording EMF and I even have one) there is a plenty of contact mics and so on, but I reeeally love sounds that you made with geofon. Lom store is always out of stock, and even if they have new batch of their stuff it’s almost impossible to get one 😢
Thank you so much Anton and we hear you. There is nothing that comes to my mind that is close to the Geofon. There is definitely a huge potential in creating such a device. Demand is there but it seems like nobody that I know takes on this challenge to make one :)
@@FreeToUseSounds eh :( but thanks for fast reply! And have a great day…or night if you’re at the east side! :)
Night :)
Thanks for the video. Btw, what is the ideal duration for one of your recordings?
That really depends on the recording.
Do you think this microphone is more sensitive than the Korg contact mic? I'm returning my Korg mic because I'm disappointed with the lack of sensitivity it has, even using the zoom f3 it brings a lot more noise than I thought, making the Korg not worth it for my use case.
One thing I would do is put an XLR directly on the end of the mic cable so you don't need an adapter. Nice small rig.
Anyway thanks for the video, very cool stuff.
Hi Michael! You mean the F3? Oh no it won’t. There is no dual XLR like the H6, H8 or X8. Not even the F6 has it. :(
This mic works way better with a DI (I use a sE DM3) - higher signal and much wider bandwidth.
For this price that gear gives outstanding quality audio.
Does the Korg CM 300 also have that kind of wide frequency response ?
I got some higher frequency range recordings from the Korg, but not as easily as this one. To be honest, it's crazy how easy and without any much gain.
Marcel, I just bought a Zoom F3 after watching your video (thank you for the reco!). What's the silver connector you're using to connect the contact mic to Zoom F3? Also, have you tried the Roland CS-10EM with the F3 yet?
Hi! This the quarter inch adapter because the F3 has no dual XLR port :( In order to use the Roland with the F3 I would need to purchase another adapter but since we have the DPA 4560 it wouldn't make sense. The quality and the way how I can record with the DPA's is so much better.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thank you!
Pleasure
Hi. I have a quick question. I own Zoom H2n Recorder... and my question is: which one of the enlisted mics in the info file of the video upload would do a great combo with my recorder? Thanks in advance and have a nice day !! 🙂
The H2n has line in right? You would need an adapter to make it work.
@@FreeToUseSounds can you give me more specific details??
Thank you Marcel for this interesting video.
What mic would you advise for Zoom F3 if I would like to replace my H6 with the Mid-Side capsule the round one.
To be able to capture ambient sounds and car sounds.
Thank you for your help.
Sorry I forgot to add, also to keep the set up as small and budget friendly as possible. Thank you
Thank you very much, Vilagi! We will not go so far as and advise people on what they should buy. We only demonstrate what we're using or would use. If you still want to record in MS you would need two microphones. You should look into one figure 8 microphone and one cardioid or hypercardioid pattern microphone. BUT now that I think about it. The Sanken CMS 50 is an M-S Stereo Microphone. It would be great if the F3 already comes with an MS decoder. Another microphone is the AUDIO TECHNICA BP4029 MS Stereo Microphone you could look into. If you have already a cardioid or hypercardioid check out Ambient Emesser. That can fit on top of a microphone. Perfect if you have already a blimp. I hope that helps? :)
Fantastic thank you Marcel, I will look them up. Appreciate you sharing your experience.
Btw
I’ve started with H1n then H6 and now F3. It is very exciting I have to admit.
H1n took me over a long way.
Keep up the good work.
@@vilagivideos3020 That's awesome :)))
I’m using an H6, do I need to use an XLR adapter with this (I’m assuming yes)? I’m in the early stages of experimenting with different microphones.
Hi! No you don't because the H6 has a dual XLR port.
Im new to field recording and I have some questions for anyone out there, I got the same contact microphone and a korg CM300WHBK. It seems to have quite a bit of hissing. it seems that my zoom h5 and h6 have xlr hiss over 5 with and without anything plugged in. any clue how I could get rid of that? Much appreciated!
Класс! Спасибо
Can zoom h1n use this mic?

I couldn’t find your video removing noise . I want to learn
I have the same thoughts in Shanghai when I get up at 5am and start hitting metal and recording with my Tascam X8 and contact mic. Some people take photos, some give the thumbs up... most think I'm odd.
He He He yeah but its fun :)
@@FreeToUseSounds It is. Got myself a contact / hydrophone on the way. Need to look again at your video for the ‘What to buy if you have $1000.’
I'm interested in contact microphones. Personally, I want to record cats purring and I feel like placing the mic on the ribcage will get those low frequencies that my shotgun and large diaphragm condensers just don't get. Professionally, I shoot video for pro rodeo events here in America and I want to mic a BULL! Thanks for all you do - I love your content.
It's a good sound. 😀 I like the recorder. Is the small recorder in market. Would like to have one recorder always in pocket 😜
Hi Til! Oh ja der Toyota hat schon was. Vaporwave style! Ich schau mal ob ich das Triton Audio irgendwo kaufen kann und dann machen wir ein neues video. Waere schon interessant zu sehen ob es einen Unterschied macht. Danke Dir :)
welcome to Indonesia 😊
Thank you :)
The zoom F3 is nice. Use mine for weddings.
Good way of using it.
Does the contact mic work directly on the 6,3mm inputs of the Tascam X8?
Hi Sebastian. Yes that's possible. The X8 has the correct dual XLR input.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thank you! I was curious about the phantom power as the X8 doesn't provide it on the 3,5mm "ext in".
@@SebastianWilling As I mentioned in this video, these contact microphones don't require pp. So please make sure you don't have it on. Otherwise you "grill" the contact microphone.
Oh man! That does sound like someone walking in snow (at 12:40)!
If you haven't already, you should watch this Japanese movie called Welcome Back Mr McDonald. It is about making a radio drama, and there is one character in there that is a sound effects genius and you remind me of him. :)
Ohh thanks you so much Mr Sim! We will check it out for sure :) Happy New Year!!
I have zoom f3. Can you tell me the product name of the two L shaped microphones at 9:32-9:39?
HI there. Ah these aren't microphones. These are adapters. We made a video about them. Look for the Sound Devices as portable recorder video.
@@FreeToUseSounds Adapter!!!😅 I will buy one! Thank you😇.
Is this microphone stereo? I just got one but it only records on the left channel of my recorder.
Hi! The contact microphone is mono. Change your recording settings to mono and also your headphones routing.
@@FreeToUseSounds thank you so much! 😍 I was about to contact the seller and return the item! 😅
Contact mics are cool, but just like EMFs they really need to be worldized in an irl acoustic space to sound less dry/too intimate etc so that's what I like to do with the stuff we record at the post house where im working now. Great recordings tho. Metal fence sounds unbelievable.
Thank you so much for your comment! Do you mind explaining what you mean by worldized in an irl acoustic space to sound less dry/too?
@@FreeToUseSounds oh, ofc. Bad English on my end, sorry! Worldize as in making the sound part of the world. It's a Walter Murch-term if I remember correctly. Easiest way to do it is just to play the sounds from a speaker and re-record the sounds with a regular microphone in whatever room you're working in, so it gets some natural distance.
@@hyyyyl7903 Oh you mean just like when recording impulse response for Convolution Reverb?
@@FreeToUseSounds kinda, but I find it tend to sound better if you just rerecord the sounds from contact mics/EMFs in a real room w a regular speaker than just adding a convolution reverb on it.
@@hyyyyl7903 I might try that out in the future. Thank you for sharing your insights!
@ Free To Use Sounds Does it cost $2 or $40 ? I am interested in evaluating noises in my house during the night hours (noisy refrigerator, heating ducts, various creaks (wood, etc.), low voice night voices\media and loud (but only on Dec. 28, like every year music and cackling from 10:00 pm until 05:00 am.........). In a nutshell, I need a contact microphone to do surveys and collect audio evidence. i live in a two-family house and it is a tragedy of life. OK!!! I am waiting for info. Thank you very much.
Selamat datang di Indonesia 😊
❤️🥳
Yeah my brain said the same thing. It's 6:30 in the morning!!
Why is she jogging 🤣
Do you need phantom power?
Not for these ones.
@@FreeToUseSoundsSorry I wasn't specific, what I meant was the Korg mics. Or the same answer?
@@KPsTboy Yes, same answer. For this you don't need pp. A contact microphone with pp would be the AKG c411pp.
@@FreeToUseSounds That one is above my pay grade. Thanks for letting me know 👍
Whoops! 0:38
Ha Ha Ha :)
@@FreeToUseSounds I laughed as well when you said whoops!
@@athensbiker We're here to entertain :)
U always put the Headset on the floor? 🥲
Not always :)
