- After a few years of using your topload washer, the suspension rods are bound to start going bad, resulting in your washer walking across the floor, or making an awful noise in spin mode. In this video, we replace an Amana Top-Load Washer's Rods to sovle the problem. This fix is the exact same for Whirlpool, Roper, and Maytag machines too also under the Bravos and Cabrio model types, too. We're using the W10189077 / W10820048 kit for the job.

Absolutely brilliant! I sprang for OEM parts from Amana (ugh $147 plus). It was a struggle to replace them due to lack of workspace. But I got the job done and now the machine runs PERFECTLY! By the way, pulling the rods up from above was easily accomplished using the hook end of an old rod. (I replaced one at a time.)
Such a wonderful feeling when you have the exact model from the demonstrating. Thank you very much you were a great help!
Yep ,, Mine also . 👍 . Thanks ! .
Thank you for keeping your video simple and straight to the point. Your type of instructions are what I look for. Thanks again.
Thank you for describing in detail what you're doing, why you're doing it, showing the closeup, and what the parts are called. There are too many people making videos that say 'do this, then do that' and grunt like Tim The Tool Man Taylor, expecting everyone to read their minds.
I just found another cause of bad shaking and walking on that same machine:
Looking into the washer, I thought the drum seemed to be too far towards the back. When I pressed down HARD on the agitator, it suddenly released from the back panel, where the upper lip had gotten caught between the removable back panel and the plate just above it. My guess is that it happened when we brought the existing washing machine down the stairs in our new house. Works GREAT now!
I was using another video which was what looked like my washer being used for this repair that made it look easy, but after removing the rear screws to lift the top up, I pulled the top forward, but couldn't get the top to lift up. Thought briefly about grabbing a crowbar, but then decided to look for other videos. Although this video is about an Amana washer, as you pointed out, it did also apply to my Whirlpool washer. Your instructions were great. I appreciate your making a really good video on this subject.
Also wanted to share my experience on buying the suspension rod kit. I looked up the part number on the Whirlpool site, but they were somewhat expensive. I searched on Amazon using the suspension kit part number. I found a lot of listings, but when I looked at the descriptions, I saw there were different lengths of rods shown. Why searching for a particular part number would bring up kits with different rod lengths is a mystery to me. Some of the wrong size listings even had my washer model shown as using their kit. I just took out the rods before ordering the kits to make sure I got the right size.
you're the only person I seen make a video with this exact model and it helped me tremendously!
Hello cutie . I want to love on you . 🙂
I’ve been looking for a new washer for 2 weeks, found you an hour ago, and already fixed mine!! Thank you!!
This is a great video. I had an amada washer with this exact issue. Bought the replacement rods and repaired it as instructed. Works beautifully now.

Thank you much for this video! I was having the same problem with my machine. I followed your video and my machine works perfectly now. You're amazing!!!
Thanks for saying that you have to use all parts that came with the rods don’t use the old bushings!
Great video, short and straight to the point. AND it's the exact washer I hve. Thank you so much for doing this.
I have watched this video so many times at this point. Thank you for such a great explanation of what to do. At this point I have just finished putting my second set of rods in my amana washer. I got the supco ones like in the video this time. (Got the cheap ones from Amazon first, and it rubbed while it spun, so they were a no go.) I noticed these were quite a bit longer and I was happy about that, until I got them installed. Once installed, it was obvious they were much to long and the basket hung down much lower then it should. I have been trying to fix this for weeks at this point because of ordering and shipping. If there is any way I could find out EXACTLY which ones I need, you have no idea how happy this would make my wife. Lo😢l mine looks exactly like the one in the video, but only has 2 knobs, rather then 3. The sticker that gave the model number rubbed to the point it can't be read long ago. Just didn't know where else to turn. Thank you so much for this video, and any other help you could provide.
Thank you. You a great person and a good teacher.
Ben is the Scotty Kilmer of appliances very knollagable and very good instructor appreciate him very much!
Good job! I'm totally confident that when my parts get here I'll be able to bang that ride out. Thanks!
Your instructional videos are very detailed and so well put together.
Thank you very much!

It was nice to see how to take out the rods. I was able to get one of the springs out - by grabbing the rod with vice grips. Once I got one rod out - the drum sags down and makes it even more difficult to grab hold of the rod. I then realized that I could use the old rod and use the hook - to hook onto the newly installed suspension spring and pull it up to the hole where the plastic support cups are positioned.
Where’d you get your rods from and what kind?
Thanks for the video. I found it easier to do with another person helping me hold the lid.
Thanks so much. Just the repair demonstration I need.
Also exact model. Very helpful instructional video. NO extraneous BS. Is there an unbalance switch that shuts down the machine before it rips the drain & supply hoses out of the wall?
Hello and thank you... I replaced springs 6 weeks ago, ran fine, now shaking again... Can springs/shocks go that fast?
Ben can you please tell me what the small cups on the suspension rod is for? They seem to serve no purpose they are the ones that are on the very top of the spring 2:37 mechanism. Thanks
Good video very simple thank you for breaking down every movement and explaining why you did what you did saved me asking stupid questions later thanks again.
They are a PITA to put on.... the first time. After that, its really easy. Most repairs are that way - the first go-thru is atrocious, then the second time (if there ever is one), you're wondering why it took you so long. Much less by the 50th time on these. Then you realize that other brands have even better, faster ways of replacing them and then you're back to wondering why it takes so long, lol
Good video
I’m experiencing the same problem. Great video BUT I would love to have seen the washer work after replacing rods if there was no banging or shaking.
I may do that in a later video, but they pretty much all operate the same afterwards
What happens if it still rumbles an shake on the spin cycle even though u replaced the Rods. It rumbles and shake for about 8 seconds and then calms down is that the way its supposed to happen, because i haven't seen any video of how it runs on the spin cycle after their replaced.
This video was good for me and I replaced the suspension. However it didn't fix the super excessive shaking. It shakes so bad the plastic ring/splash guard between the inner and outer tubs hits the sides of the cabinet violently on high spin (using the manual diagnostic mode). So I checked that the unit is level and replaced the suspension but still have the problem. Could it be the block? Or maybe the spanner nut? Any help is greatly appreciated.
P.S. I am talking about an Amana NTW4516FW2 top loader
Omg this is absolutely my washer same model. Just had this done to my Washer and it’s still loud I’m waiting for it to be serviced on Monday.
Help! I bought and installed the new suspension rods and it did nothing. The basket is "wobbling" even as it spins slowly during the sensing/filling cycle. Why else would it bang the sides and walk all over the place. I reset the feet to make sure that wasn't the issue. Oh, it's a Maytag Bravos, but not the XL.
Hub beneath the washplate, most likely.
@@bensappliancesandjunk I just replaced the plastic hub that goes over the metal shaft if that is what you mean. It wasn't spinning correctly, so I replaced that. In fact, I've replaced it
3 times so far.
@@stephenleach4485 Im planning on putting a video out about that particular problem soon. The inner tub is shot and needs replaced. You may be able to get whirlpool to send you one for free due to warranty, but that'll be the only way to solve it outside a new washer.
@@bensappliancesandjunk Thank you for responding. That figures. I'm just so sick of replacing these dang machines every two years! Being born in 1970, I remember washers that would last a lifetime. Realizing that is where you make $ and meaning no offense, I'm disgusted with our economic model and planned obsolescence.
Thank you for this tutorial. It was very helpful. I swapped rods and it’s much quieter. I can still hear a little bit more vibration than it had before the issue that prompted the swap.
I’m assuming this may be a balance issue? How would you recommend diagnosing how level it is vs the balancing ring?
Balance ring would be physically damaged causing the out-of-balance issue
@@bensappliancesandjunk balance ring not likely damaged. as a whirlpool factory tech i have never found a balance ring bad unless someone managed to smash it with a hammer!
I would highly recommend using the whirlpool part not the supco or aftermarket part. I could see obvious differences in the video. also check the level of the unit. and check and make sure the basket does not move on the shaft. grab the tub ring or outer tub and the basket and see if there is any lateral movement. the hub or basket may be worn.
@@bensappliancesandjunk which one is the balance ring?
I tested my basket and there really not much bounce at all when pushing it down and side to side seems fine...yet my washer bounces around like yours when it spins a load that's not balanced. Any idea what else could be causing the issue as the rods seem fine. Thanks and good video! I have a Maytag model mvwc565fw2
Is your washer level?
@@2JobsStillPoorUSA yep I checked and double checked that it was level. I just recently got rid of that maytag model and bought a new LG washer and have had no issues at all.

Hi. I have a kenmore VMW 110.21252110 that goes out of balance a lot. Sometimes the loads aren’t even out of balance. Also I’m not sure it’d this is the same issue or a bad shift actuator but at times I need to manually put the machine in spin since it won’t always go into spin and drain on its own. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.
great job, i thumbed it!, any reason y you didn't use suspension centering springs4each corner, that connect to the rod and a peg on the tub, so it stablizes the center, the rods are mostly up/down motion, but not center area....?
Some versions have the springs, others do not. The ones I used in the video didn't have the spring, but the link I have in description do.
@@bensappliancesandjunk thanks Ben! think the springs, add extra suspension besides just the rods. interesting, my rods were replaced 1.5yr with warranty on my standard whirlpool washer, surprised the tech didn't put them in, they never came with any, just rods, but there is only 4 holes on each corner tab on the tub, showin u were the spring attaches to the tub so its convenient4me to attach, anyway, washer used religiously 2 x a week so 225 to 250 washes, and they quit, what garbage!... so wat else goes commonly wrong with the whirlpools??? that you know of, i am gna hav2brace for it.........in advance, thanks
@@mml1224 common stuff are rods, shift actuator (won't spin), then lid lock if you get garbage in it or damage it by slamming the lid down. None are difficult to replace. The big scary thing would be if it starts grinding due to a bad bearing or transmission system. Those are expensive to fix. Rods shouldn't go out that quickly though. I'd make sure machine is level, and you aren't overloading it with clothing.
@@bensappliancesandjunk thanks ben! well define overloading, is it weight or fill height, please explain. if i got bad bearing/tranny-i'd get a new one, unless you had a DIY utube vid on how to replace them, r the parts expensive?im gna put in the springs today,if they dont work i mite have to buy new rods, wat site do u recommend, there not cheap?
@@bensappliancesandjunk Thanks for a great video Ben. What would you consider a normal load of bath towels for a washer similar to the one in this video.
My whirlpool washer had the same issue, I bought a suspension rod kits from a local appliance’s store and installed it, it worked fine until recently the banging around came back. What should I do next?
Check the hub, and tub to see if theres play between the inner and outer tubs. If there is, check and replace a hub if the system has one.
@@bensappliancesandjunk Ok, i also kept the original plastic supports. Do I need to replace those as well along with the rods?
Thank you, Thank you Sir , I’m believing your Video has helped me solve my issue.
I replaced the rods and springs on the exact same washing machine that you demonstrated. I bought the recommended replacement kit which was said to be the correct kit. However I noticed that the replacement rods were about 2 inches shorter than the original rods bringing the tub up higher. Did I get the wrong Kit or will the shorter ones work just as well?
My rods are about two inches longer lol
Sounds like a trade!! 😂
Thanks for the video. Fixed my washer right up.
GE washers had a cinder block bolted inside the washer so it would not shake. It worked well.
So I replaced all four rods in a kenmore series 100 for the life of me it's still unbalanced. It shakes so bad and so violent sounding like the whole drum is going to bust through the side of the washer..... any help will be greatly appreciated not sure if I didnt put them in right or what.
There's another issue then. I'd look at the balance ring on the unit. As well as how level the machine is.
It is possessed! Excellent instructional video. Very informative
Changed the suspension rods and added 4 new springs.
First load worked fine
Second load started banging again.
Rechecked every and it was all still in place.
Any suggestions?

@@dontowery6877 use proper parts, not the aftermarket. check basket for worn out hub. does basket wobble on shaft?
Were one of the spring rods broken. Or the springs just get weak ?
Its not the springs, its the small rubber/foam dampeners in between the springs and rod. They get weak and result in the basket bouncing too much
This is the perfect video thank you for the info made it so quick any easy on point explaining! 👍
I just did this now when I did a test run it like my basket is scraping the basket like the plastic shavings? Any thoughts same washer as in the video and same parts that I bought idk what's going on. Any help would be appreciated.
I have that same washer. Is the link on the video the one's I need?
The blue coupling can I remove that and it still work properly?! With me leaving them on my tub sits to high?
Is it possible the replacement rods are also bad? I have replaced all rods in my washer and still bangs around like at the start of this video.
Mine too, what you find out?
Your videos are great, and very helpful, I have a question. I get the code again after I clear, without the machine ever actually spinning.. the aggetator spins 2 or 4 times clockwise, it never trys to actually goe counter clockwise. When I run the automatic test mode it seems to work fine What do you think?
Mine is still knocking. Seems tighter. Way more resistance to bounce but jumping around way worse . Tips????
Hi there great video… I have a washer that scrapes at the top part where the top tub liner and the medal framing meet. The previous owner mentioned he changed the spring rods but in think he did something wrong and the tub is too high that it’s touching the top and it actually broke the lid lock . The top tub plastic liner is all damaged Could it be the rods were not placed right or are not the right ones or what are your thoughts?
Our washer has springs attached to the rod and drum, but only 2 . Is this right?
I take one of the old rods. Bend it so i can use its hook to hook on the new rod and pull it up through the hole at the top of the washer
Thanks, helped me fix an issue where one of the rods fell out
Great video, thank you. Do you have a site to purchase the suspension rods?
Very helpful video! I did notice that there was an additional plastic piece on the new rods. The blue piece of plastic above the springs. Is this a necessary piece? Mine came with that as well but I removed them as they seemed not to fit
they are designed to lock on and re-enforce the dampers. If you can use them then absolutely lock them in
@@bensappliancesandjunk worth pulling it out to put them in you think? Thanks for the reply by the way
I have a stupid question: might it be ok, and make sense, to change 2 rods at the time, but diagonally opposing one.... So, rod 1 and 3, and then next round, 2 and 4.
Sure, that would be fine. Just make sure to change all of them in one sitting though.
Ben,
I need your advice. I have a Maytag MVWC565FW1 washer. It was shaking and banging around. I replaced the suspension rods as you suggested, but I still have the same problem. Can you help me figure out what else it could be? Thanks.

Thank you so very much for this tutorial! It has been very helpful!
I have a amana as well and I replaced With new rods and its still not working. It bangs alot when it starts spin cycle. Even after new rods if u move tub left or right it shifts with alot of play
I'd check and make sure its absolutely perfectly level. Also make sure the balancing ring isn't trashed - its the plastic thing on top of washer tub between tub and the lid itself. When a washer gets really unbalanced, that ring tends to get caught and ripped off, causing more unbalancing.
Check to see if there are springs at bottom of tub connecting to the frame of the machine. Should be one on the bottom back and two on bottom front (each side). I believe the springs hold the tub sterdy.
@@jenickaalanis9727 that would be for an older Direct Drive style washing machine. Amana hasn't made that style for 10+ years now, I believe.
@@bensappliancesandjunk If it was the balancing ring it would always make noise even during the wash cycle? Has all 4 new rods doesn’t bounce up and down. Machine is Balanced on the ground. The model I have didn’t come with any springs, the model after does. Not sure what holds the outer tub bucket sturdy, but it moves side to side front and back very easily. and only bangs on sides during spin cycle. What holds the outer tub bucket if not springs?
@@jenickaalanis9727 on a vertical modular washer as pictured in the video, the outer tub has the plastic molded to fit the 4 suspension rods. The inner tub is then secured to the outer tub via the central gearcase shaft and splines, as well as (possibly) a hub.
Its possible there could be "play" in between the inner and outer tub that could cause extreme unbalancing in spin that can't be seen or fixed normally via new suspension rods. I check to see if you can pick up and push down, the inner tub from the outer. If so, you'd have to take agitator off and investigate between inner and outer tub if there's a restriction that's causing it to be unlevel.

There seems to be a small screw on something rolling around between both pieces of the drum. Washer is definitely making the awful noise you described. Not sure if that is the entire problem or if it's a part of one of the springs. Not sure how to get the drum opened up to find out. Anyone got a clue?
Coins will get between the agitator or wash plate. Sometimes, they just roll around and make a weird metallic noise. They can/will bind up and lock the agitator/wash plate to the basket, causing a locked rotor condition. You can remove them with a pocket screwdriver.

hey ben another very helpful video thanks ??? do you recommend oem whirlpool rods or are sun brand ok to use let me know thanks
Honestly, I almost always go OEM. 3rd party rods tend to have very poor dampener systems and usually the problem is with that part of the assembly, not the shocks themselves.
@@bensappliancesandjunk thanks Ben
I changed my rods and my washer is still banging. What else could it be?
Where should I buy springs for the Amana?
You want to go OEM on the springs as aftermarket from just about anyone suck due to bad dampeners. Whats your model#?
I didnt that on 3 different amana washers and they still shake the same way. What else can I be?
Is it necessary to replace all four rods? Isn't there a way to determine which of the rod(s) are defective and just replace those?
If you replace one rod, it will be at 100% strength/newness and the others could be at 70% and it'll be thrown out of balance just the same.
