  • Is there a cheap and generally effective way to prevent a washing machine from banging around without spending a ton of money? Yes! In this video, we try using safety pins, or in my exact case, straight pins, to shore up the suspension rod system with very surprising results! This will help fix your Whirlpool or Maytag Washer that won't spin out or bounces around due to the suspension rod dampeners being shot.

Amazing! Worked! I used 2" safety pins. Couple of additional tips from my experience. When separating the damper with the putty knife I held the bottom half with pliers because it was greasy. This allowed the top part to come off very easily. When pulling down on the safety pin part to slide it between the damper and the rod I held and pushed the pin with needle nose pliers as I pulled down on the top part of the damper. When reinstalling the top part of the rod after sliding it up through the mount, I found it was easiest just to reach down and grab the bottom of the rod with my hand so the rod stays up and you can reattach that plastic thing at the top. Very much appreciate the video. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! My Maytag Centennial was mercilessly walking around when in spin cycle. I followed your video instructions and installed the safety pins as you demonstrated. This done, it now spins like new!! As with everything…….the price for new rods has doubled. They are no longer $60 but in fact 120+ tax I decided to try the safety pin route and boy am I glad I did.

Great tip, here’s a tip for you all. When retrieving the tension rods through the eye hole of the retainer, I take a extra tension rod or spring, turn it upside down, using the hook to grab the other hook and pull it up through the eye hole/retainer cup. 👍 it doesn’t take as much muscle.

I did the hack using straight pins. Mine pins were kind of on the thin side, but my basket was not bouncing as much as the one you had in your video. So i gave it a try since my suspension rod plastic collar had some give but not as much as the one in your video. It worked great. I figured I would rather try the hack instead of buying some generic brand from Amazon and where the quality might not be the best.

Bravo my friend. I have a Brand New Maytag MVWB765Fw. It was manufactured in 2019 but I just bought it 2 weeks ago on a major league discount and in the box factory (allegedly) new. After firing it up it was apparent the 4 inlet valve was not working so I replaced that. Then it was out of balance crazy on all cycles. Your video was the first I saw. I used a paper clip in each one so the plastic was really tight and Voila, The wife now has a brand new Maytag that works quite well thanks to your fix. I have to say WTF to Maytag. How can a washer never used out of the box 5 years old have two major defective parts in it like that? You telling me time, good ole fashioned "Time" degrades a valve and a suspension rod and its parts? Most ridiculous thing ever. My parents had a GE Washer made in 1953 that was handed down from my Great Aunt to my Mom and it lasted until 1993 when the power company bought it back along with the 40 year old GE refridgerator for 5 times what my Aunt paid for it in 1953. Dont make 'em like they used to. Thanks again Brother Maytagger!

Sometimes those darn suspension rods can be a total pain in the you know what if things don't go smoothly during the process to change them. The plastic around the tub or the metal cabinet will shred your arms up if you don't protect your arms and hands. The rubber gloves he recommended is a great tip also, especially if you are going back with new rods. Amazing how they make something so simple such a headache!

tried the hack and cured my whirlpool. This machine is like a Ford. Not quick and easy slots but doable if you're patient and can get underneath. Just saves time to have slots. Thank you for sharing!!!!
I left the curl on the pin to hold it in place.
Use pliers to hold the black housing and a dull screw driver. Pops off first try.
Lay a small mirror on the floor to find the hole if you don't have slots.

  • @GZRBangBang
    @GZRBangBang 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Thanks for the safety pin hack! Our Maytag machine doesn't bang around with a large-ish load now.
I tried another hack where someone suggested using tarp straps with the excess wrapped around the rod, but I couldn't get the wrap to stay put, so I strapped the bottom end to the base of the washing machine as there are holes there. Didn't last long as one strap unhooked at the bottom then all we'd hear is the loose strap and metal hook slapping against the metal "box" of the washer.
I was going to try using split shaft 1/4” collars which is a really nice hack, but it costs about $25/set in Canada. Cheaper than a set of suspension rods, but still not as cheap as the tarp straps (1.99 ea).
So I kept on looking for other solutions and thankfully came across your video. We only had three large safety pins at home, so I used your method, but used the cut side on one as my fourth (with the safety locking head part). It took a bit more effort to insert into the plastic bit, but I eventually got it in by hammering the cut end a little more tapered. It's been about 2 weeks and no annoying banging noise when running.
Rather disappointed to hear Maytag was bought by Whirlpool and made in the same factory. You'd think "Designed, Assembled, blah blah in America" would stand for better quality which is why we bought a Maytag washer. If they just added split collars to the rods (or safety pins ;), it would probably solve the issue permanently. Worst case scenario maybe you have to pull out the rods and tighten the split collars every X years.

And B) DAMPEN the movement of the tub especially during the spin cycle. The portion on these rods that provide the DAMPENING are really cheap and cheezy design. I'd say just replace em all and move on like I did and DON"T buy the knock off parts (I tried em and they were incorrect length). Cheers!!

I bought a maytag washer about 7 years ago because it has a 10 year warranty. A year later the washing machine had this issue where it was bouncing around. I could not figure out the problem and it was difficult to contact the manufacturer for warranty repair. I decided to purchase a basic whirlpool that costs hundreds less than the Maytag and didn’t come with a 10 year warranty label on the washing machine. It’s been working perfectly and have not had any issues. If this is such a common problem with Maytag why not redesign it? I will never buy another Maytag washing machine.

If I was doing this myself, I think I'd wuss out and buy new rods - my washer dryer are in a tiny shallow area, I'd not want to do this twice, lol. This is a great tip, if it lasts for a while. Otherwise, it could be more beneficial just buying the OEM replacements, hoping they will at least last as long as the original one's did. Which in my case was 4-years.

This video changed my life. I was unemployed, unhealthy, and alone. Then I watched this video and my life was transformed forever. Now I'm the CEO of a successful company, I have a six pack, I'm happily married, and have two healthy sons. Thank you Bens Appliances and Junk for the amazing video!!!

I recently had to remove the washer tub and I found lots of mud and gunk was causing the machine to go out of balance even after I replaced the rods. Once I removed the tub and cleaned the bottom, the washer ran smoothly.

    Thanks for your videos, Ben.
I fixed the rods and it seemed to have worked because when I manually push down it does not bounce like it use to, I also did the reset and recalibration but I'm still having the same bouncing problem when the machine is spinning.
My washer is a Whirlpool model WTW4816FW2. What else could it be?

Great video! This is exactly what is wrong with my machine.
😬I was gifted this exact machine when I mentioned to a family member that I was going to buy a new machine 🙄😩 thankful & appreciative but this is THE WORST washing machine I have EVER had. I hated it from the 1st use

    Nice hack.
Sliding a movers blanket under the machine to protect the wood floor when you're tilting it would be a good idea.

oh my god this worked. My next step was spending $1000 at Home Depot. A brake spring hook tool made it a lot easier to pull the rods through the top too

I wonder if using four short sections of a pool noodle would provide more damping between the two sections of plastic holders where you put the safety pins ?

Once again TH-cam has saved me. Over the past 10 years, I would estimate TH-cam has saved me between $75K to 100K in car and home repairs. I installed the safety pins as the video instructed and the washer works like new. Not sure how long the fix will last, but it beats spending $50 for a new set of dampers.

I am 67, and sadly it took me 20 years of banging myself over the head with various American made machines Kenmore Beau Mark from the Bay and Whirlpool before finally settling with a German made Miele front load washer and dryer, both of which have been running almost daily since 1999 to presently in 2023! I can't ask for anything more! totally made to last!

Try tightening the flywheel first to fix unbalanced load issues. It worked for me. Turn your washer on its side ( tape the lid shut to prevent it from opening and disconnect the water supply lines) Use a ¼” allen wrench to tighten the flywheel (bolt is in the middle of the round wheel) . It will be tight to turn. You can use a short piece of pipe on your wrench for extra leverage. Wear gloves so if the wrench slips you won’t hurt your hands. Hope it works🤞

@@jossiel24 I used this quick fix successfully on my Maytag Bravos washer. I’m not sure if other Maytag washers are made the same way. It’s worth checking anything make to see if it’s a possible solution.

My washer and dryer are up against each other. The washer used to move around maybe once a month when doing king sheets due to imbalance.
SOLVED the problem forever. I placed a strip of clear packing tape on top and effectively taped them together. Tape from front to back - this will make them a single unit. The same tape has been on there for years and the washer has NEVER moved an inch. ⬜⬜ And being the tape is facing down... no lint or dust gets in to make the sticky side dirty.

Dated a chic that had an unnatural desire to wash door/bath mats. All of them. At once. Only time I've seen this failure. But I also had to bust the basement floor up to replace the drain pipe clogged with dog hair and rubber dingleberries. Her chocolate chip cookies were the best. Worth every second.

What you can do with the lid is make the lid lock engage by starting a cycle so the lid is locked shut, then unplug it before it unlocks then lift the top and the lid will not fall and you won’t need to tape the lid…
