You just don’t get the car. I have one and it’s a torque monster. It isnt “surgy”. It’s unbelievably smooth and pulls up mountains without shifting, unlike the gas car. And 44 mpg at 80 mph. The engine makes the car and you missed the whole thing. It isn’t choked by emissions. BMW used adblue, like Mercedes, and no cheating was required. Enjoy your Mercedes with plastic seats.
@@johnhowardesq thank you for replying. Should I purchase a 2016 VN golf sportwagon or a 2014 bmw328d x drive. They are the same cost and mpg. I am concerned about the EGR…. Should I be? What would you do.
You guys(?)have no clue what this machine is capable to do. That’s a serious mid class cruiser to fly low in the autobahn (German highway). You can blast up to 240 km/h with an enormous amount of torque with a ridiculous fuel consumption. German tech which is 15 years ahead of your stuff. I own one and love it. BMW is about performances, tech and emissions (4 cylinders instead of 6). This toy is way too big for you. Get a Toyota or Honda.
F31 diesel gets 50-60% better fuel economy, with fuel that costs less than premium, and frankly requires less maintenance… instead of spark plugs, coil packs, intake piping etc replacements as a matter of course, you jsut refill the adblue for $12 every oil change. 29-30 mpg beating on it, plus 45-49 highway at 75-80… and you can toss it around in town amd cruise the freeway… nothing like getting better mpg than a mini with the comfort and the size of a 5 series.
In what world is the N47 "surgy??" Its far and away the smoothest 4 cylinder diesel I've ever felt. That and the N20 (the only engines this car got in the US save for the B48, which came later and is rarer) were more steps up from their preceding 6 cylinders on the E9x in both reliability and power. For engines that lost 2 cylinders compared to their predecessors, they were incredibly smooth and refined (oh and did I mention such modern amenities as electric water pumps). As for how F3x cars age, I honestly don't get the complaints. Its on par with the E91, which was industry-standard for quality, and I'd say it beats out the C-class of the same era. I think you really just don't understand this car. Its practical, its easy to use, its comfortable, and it gets 50+ miles to the gallon (which it will do on the autobahn for you Germans lucky enough to live in this things home market). It does all of that while still being fun and sporty. Just a note, not your fault, but given its now 2022, this thing should now more than pay for itself. A gas F31 should take 91 grade gas, which basically costs the same as diesel in most US stations. This thing doubles the mpg you get with an N20. Self explanatory.
STOP BUYING CROSSOVERS 🙌🏽 Really interesting take about diesel being a "character point" in today's world. Gasoline engines have gotten so efficient, and hybrid/electric are the next big step. Diesel engines have a unique charm, but they are indeed rapidly losing its relevance among passenger cars. I still miss my Mk4 Golf TDI
At the 10:06 mark, when comparing this car to the 328i, it's pointed out that diesel is more expensive. The gasoline equivalent of this F31 wagon, the N20 or B48 (post-LCI), both call for a minimum fuel grade of 91 octane. Are there places in the US where premium gasoline is cheaper than diesel?
Actually, I ran the numbers using fuel prices at a gas station near my house. 328i - 22 mpg city, 33 mpg hwy 328d - 30 mpg city, 40 mpg hwy 87 Octane gasoline - $2.90/gal Diesel - $3.05/gal City: 328i - $0.132/mile ($132/1000 miles)* 328d - $0.102/mile ($102/1000 miles) Highway: 328i - $0.088/mile ($88/1000 miles)* 328d - $0.076/mile ($76/1000 miles) But wait! BMW recommends using minimum 89 octane gasoline, which at the same gas station costs $3.30/gal. So the actual 328i numbers, assuming you're following their guidelines, are as follows: 328i, 89 octane gas: City - $0.150/mile ($150/1000 miles) Highway - $0.100/mile ($100/1000 miles) In addition, during the recent fuel crisis, during the worst of it, the only fuels available in this area were diesel and flex fuel, meaning that I was not able to fill my 328i but would have been able to fill a 328d if I had one. I'm not certain what fuel prices are in your area, or what fuels are more or less available during times of fuel scarcity, but out here a diesel would definitely be worth it from a fuel cost and availability standpoint... ...I just wish that BMW had brought the 335d Touring to the US.
Wow, diesel is more expensive than 87 octane there? Here in Canada diesel has always been about 80% the price of low octane gas, until a few years ago they used a refinery shortage as an excuse to increase the price, which hasn't gone back down, but they are still close with diesel just below 87 octane for prices. But with that said, we're still more expensive for fuel, averaging about $5/gallon with "covid" prices.
Nice vid/ Review , but next time have the camera showing the rear touch points because the it was fairly hard to understand why the USB/rear vents are so so and ect.
8:25 = Christopher, you better hold it together. I just purchased a 328d and I cant paint to "point and squirt" that thing all over the metro area! Thanks for the review you two!
How are you managing to find a 328d for 50k now a days? I have a luxury trim 328d sedan and I absolutely love its performance. I also only picked it up for 16k with 84 thousand miles and it runs and looks wonderful! Had it up to 38.4 mpg. Personally the review isn’t for me but you guys keep doing you stuff I suppose. Good presentation.
i have the same car minus the m sport package, Mine does have the "executive" Package though which i love the look of. But there are many issues with the cars features. For instance when parking the doors do not unlock upon turning the car off meaning that you either HAVE to press the unlock button or pull the door handles TWICE to get out. Owners of the car may not mind, but unknowing passengers will nearly rip the door handles off trying to get out. Also the Idrive system is difficult to navigate, I have the larger screen but its not touch, sometimes the blue tooth has issues such as connecting but no sound, connecting but no album cover showing on the screen. The thin run flat tires give great grip but are unforgiving on bumpy roads. The car rides pretty Hard. This car is meant to be a highway driver long haul or road trip vehicle versus something to whip around town. But my BIGGEST Problem with this car is the transmission. The car is always seemingly searching for the proper gear to be in, anyone who drives spirited needs to leave the car in sport mode to get proper gear shifts. Besides that, the car kinda jerks when you slow down perhaps to make a right turn or something and almost stop but takeoff again the car jerks down into first or the slack in the drivetrain OR the transfer case actuation may be causing it. but its SOOOOO annoying. BMW look great. they feel great, theyre safe, BUT you dont get as many features as you do in a loaded toyota. Its a prestige vehicle in my opinion. I came from a 2006 x3 m sport. i love the gas mileage of this car. i love the sound of this car. i love the look of this car, BUT the developers really could have done a few minor programming things to make the car more friendly to use.
There is an app to code the doors to unlock when the engine is turned off. I found the iDrive actually very easy to use with the joystick controls and the dedicated back key. Touch screens are all the rage but between the steering controls and the joystick, I don't spend too much time looking at the screen. Having the physical buttons and the scroll wheel is something that makes way more sense than an iOS style screen. As for the Bluetooth connectivity, I do sometimes have issues with connecting my device to the iDrive system, however, this is very rare. It is possible you simply needed a software update for your car. Finally, the album art does show up if you have an iOS device. BMW didn't support Android properly until recently. Their target market seems to be more iOS devices. In fact, you'd have better luck using a blackberry with the iDrive system than any android device simply because the implementation of Android wasn't that great until recently.
Safety for kids. I have the same car. It is a men car. It needs to be driving properly. If you don’t squeeze it, this is not for you. Try to find Toyota in a nice color and enjoy it.
Hate to say it but I’m pretty sure this car would die after a hard day at the track. All the plastic pipes and fittings would crack or explode from the radiant heat in the engine bay, the motor may fail catastrophically due to timing chain failure ANDDD the transfer case might just grenade in the middle of a turn or when you’re hard on the throttle. It just doesn’t FEEL like a car that was ever meant to be thrown around. Rather driven at the speed limit on the highway too and from. Once you get there, get in the Toyota or the Honda and whip it around town 😂
I get down on mine at least once a week from 0-80mph and it pulls decent but it’s not so exciting that I want to keep doing it. The engine lacks the top end power to keep you pushed back in the seat, the gears are extremely short so everytime you start to get some power it shifts again. The tranny feels like it’s going to die in sport mode under full throttle. Shifting so fast in a diesel which seems unnecessary to me. Seems like it’s causing damage to the drivetrain simply to increase shift speed which might shave off like .1 .2 of a second each time? This isn’t an m car, I don’t think anyone really cares about .1 .2 of a second.
This car is the equivalent of a 25 year old girl demanding you treat her like a lady when she acts like a teenager. This car wants to be luxury sport but it’s just not. It’s more of a touring car. Great on gas, decent amount of room and looks, that’s about it. Lacks interior storage, lacks common sense sizing of storage compartments. I mean hell the owners manual barely fits into the glovebox it comes in.
I have a 2015 328 d Touring, but unlike yours, it's an Xdrive. It is also much better appointed with option packages. I think the only thing I don't have is the HK radio. The real issue with this model diesel is the EGR issues and the transfer case issue (giubo plate) issue. But those were covered under a recall/extended warranty so I think BMW owners are doing alright by BMW/NA. I love the way mine drives in the mountains - the torque is like a train.
