  • For a long time I've dreamed of bigger, ongoing Zelda stories. And right now, with Age of Calamity and the announcement of the Breath of the Wild sequel, that's basically happening.

    I've finally finished Age of Calamity and I disagree that it renders this discussion irrelevant. All my points still stand, and the game's existence still works to build a new storytelling model for the series. SO THERE.

      The point was basically that you have "Kingdom Hearts 2" and "Kingdom Hearts 3", so you'd *think* those are like the most important entries and that the main story takes place within those...
      Yet no, there are *hugely important* developments and reveals scattered throughout the like fifty thousand other titles that came out between 2 and 3, and while there was only one game in between 1 and 2, said one game did still change up the status quo in such a way that anyone jumping straight from 1 to 2 would probably be at least somewhat confused. Yet, the simple fact that they are *named* "Kingdom Hearts", "Kingdom Hearts II" and "Kingdom Hearts III" kinda gives those three titles in particular an air of being uniquely significant, like the other games don't matter as much?
      ...At least that's what I took from that statement.

    As I continue to replay BoTW every few months, I've been paying more attention to the world and just how big and fairly dense it is. I have more confidence that they can add enough new mechanics and tweaks to the environments to make up for the asset reuse, especially if they tell more engaging narratives both in the main story and the side stuff (hoping every major side quest is at a level of quality similar to Terry Town). There's so much potential here. While BoTW's narrative itself was disappointing, all the necessary pieces were there and I can say that it's easily the most fully realized Hyrule has ever been. It feels kind of plausible to live there which I couldn't ever say about any other iteration of Hyrule where sometimes it didn't seem like there was even enough landmass for people to live off of. With BoTW 2, I hope they try something interesting with the champion's descendants. Sidon is pretty fleshed out but they can go way further with him and the others definitely could use more work (especially Teba who I'm sure most people forgot even existed).

      Narrative and dungeons are the biggest flaws of BOTW, and the Zelda team should include OG Hyrule Warriors to the timeline and put BOTW after that game.
      OG Hyrule Warriors takes place after every Zelda game or using a lot of the games, this can explain the magical 10 000 game between Ocarina of Time and Breath of The Wild specially when Twilight Princess is the last one of the direct Ocarina of Time sequels.

    I like Age of Calamity, but I would have preferred if we were given a canon prequel, or they could've been at least been more honest about it. Age of Calamity has been shown to be noncanon, with its storytelling more akin to the first Hyrule Warriors, as it contradicts a lot of the memories, diaries, and the officially-written books. It seems to be more of a fanservice-y spinoff than a part of a "trilogy". Nonetheless, I like Age of Calamity's storytelling, but it has no bearing on Breath of the Wild's universe, it's a Hyrule Warriors story that happens to be specifically focused on Breath of the Wild's characters.

      Yes; Nintendo and Koei Tecmo squandered a golden opportunity to give us a canon prequel to BOTW; to have the player actually experience the Calamity. I was ready to cry. Age of Calamity supposedly being a prequel was the only reason I was even interested in the game. Then I heard about the egg guardian time-travelling in the demo and I got suspicious. After the game released, my suspicions were confirmed so I didn't buy it.

      @@Whispernyan The demo would be a good argument for that, if the rest of the marketing didn't double-down on the whole, "prequel to Age of Calamity" lie:
      1. The announcement trailer opened with the line from the king, "I think you are now ready; ready to hear what happened 100 years ago." Gee; I wonder what fans are supposed to take away from that? Alternate timeline? (obvious sarcasm).
      2. In all the game footage that they showed in the trailers, everything that would've given away the time-travel (not story spoilers; just the time-travel) was deliberately edited-out of the scenes. Seriously; people have done comparisons between the scenes in the trailers and the same scenes in the game and proven it.
      3. Look at Nintendo's website for the game: "Experience the events of the Great Calamity", "Join the struggle that brought Hyrule to its knees", "The Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity game is the only way to see firsthand 100 years ago." How is anyone supposed to interpret these lies in any way besides, "prequel"?
      I could easily list more examples, but I think this should be enough. Nintendo falsely-advertised the game as a prequel, and the demo including the egg-guardian scene isn't enough to make up for everything the rest of the marketing was doing.

It's mainly because people expected it to be the same story but in the past that it might feel disappointing when it wasn't. But I also think what we got was some of the best story Zelda has gotten in terms of executing on it. Zelda isn't exactly the best series for storytelling. They have charming characters and fun gameplay, but no one plays a Zelda game because of the story. Well except for Skyward Sword. With the way Age of Calamity is written, it makes me hopeful they can keep improving on storytelling in future Zelda titles. Especially with how they wrote Zelda in this game.

    Spoilers for Age of Calamity:
    I like how, even though they changed the timeline, you can still see where the Champions originally died and everything went bad (before the time traveling stuff). Even though the story is different than what the flashbacks in BotW showed, you can easily see what originally happened.

    • @arandomraichu230

      Yeah, even though it didnt give the sad story of defeat of the original timeline it still does give you hints of what happened, or what would've happened, originally. As a couple of examples:
      The divine beasts missions where you can just easily tell how the champions died.
      The 2nd Akkala tower mission, where you can also see how the fort originally fell in botw's timeline (the unrelenting force of guardians and the new 'malice guardians').
      Fort Hateno, where link died in the original.
      And hyrule field and castle where you can assume what Zelda basically had to went through to even fight Ganon for 100 years.

      @@arandomraichu230 Yeah absolutely. It felt like they very much intentionally made those specific missions more stressful and serious to show how much was really going for Hyrule to fall in the original timeline. Especially the Hateno Fort mission which had a huge map where you had to go all over the place while at the same time protecting a single stronghold that was constantly under attack. I'm sure it wasn't just that way to make the late game more difficult, it was specifically designed to show how hopeless those battles were.

The game play is a lot darker then a normal zelda game, being a stealth game similar to hitman but without the guns, where you play as impa or any other sheika assassin doing tasks like assassinating or arresting this target or stealing an artifact. At the end you would fight a smaller boss either being Vatti, Ghirahim, Zant or an entirely new villain. Probably not going to happen but I thought it would be cool.

    one thing that I loved in games back in the day, is that I could just pick one game and enjoy it's story from beginning to the end, even in series like zelda, even in games like majoras mask, they story are so it's own thing that it doesn't matter if you played ocarina of time or not, and that is it, no season 2, no waiting for a sequel, or a dozen to know how it will end, if it will end one day, it is just that, a fun experience and a fun story that I can experience from beginning to end, and it is not impossible to maintain the same brand but starting a new independent story (zelda does that most of time)
    nowadays, we have big AAA games with stories that goes for multiple games, where there is always a need to keep it going for the sake of money, and with a guarantee that it will have an awful end, because instead of the writers just know how long the story will be, they need to keep going indefinitely, and I just can't give a damn from games that does that, it is just boring, bad and a cash grab
    yes, it is cool that this time around, Botw can have a prequel that tell a history in the same hyrule, and how it will have a second go in the same world (hopefully like ocarina was in relation of majoras mask, you don't need to play ocarina to get the basic of majoras) as much it was cool that wind waker was also a trilogy, but at the same time, every game being it's own thing with good ends
    I don't want to play 3 games and wait for years to have a good conclusion for my history, with writers being forced to keep adding thing to the same world even when they don't want to to sell more, resulting in to a crap end that will disappoint everyone
    so I just wish that every Arlo wish related to this not realize, cause it would just ruin everything for me

    Or how about a game focused entirely on guy trapped in the toilet in Majoras Mask! He'd have to fight back sewage beasts in a binding of issac type game. Checkpoints are different toilets he goes underneath, and you beg people paper.
    Or maybe instead of a farming simulator with Malon, it was a horror game focusing on her attempt to survive the aliens that visit Lon Lon Ranch. If you've seen the movie Signs, imagine that on Lon Lon Ranch.
    Or, how about a game focused on the Orca and Sturgeon from Wind Waker(The old man who trains link and his brother upstairs). It could be about both brothers traveling the high seas. One in search of action, the other in search of knowledge. Maybe they have a ship and begin picking up crew members that are all searching for adventure. After a grand adventure and great discovery, your crew feels fulfilled and you come across an Island that you decide to establish a village in, and you call it Outset Island. The crew members you had collected included Links grandmother, and everyone on the island is descendants of that crew.
    Or, what about a horror/adventure game surrounding the happy mask salesmen. It could be about his travels and his eventual finding of Majora's Mask?
    What about a Legend of Zelda Story game, with Paper Mario aesthetics, but more in line with thr first two Paper Mario games combat and rpg system. Maybe make it even more rpg focused. Have Link collect allies to help him defeat Vaati? Have combat be turn based with an audience like TTYD, and have Link make friends with certain individuals that will watch your battles and help you every so often as well.

    Age of Calamiry is a timeline split. It's not actually a prequel from the moment the Link meets the egg-guardian onwards. Events completely shift in that moment when he meets it and the Shieka Towers rise out of the ground. They're similar, but different. This game essentially starts at a timeline split moment the same as when Link went back to the past in Ocarina of Time and warns Zelda about Ganondorf. They just decided to start this game with the timeline change instead of ending it with it

    Zelda spin-off idea: A pirates sim with Tetra & Co before Windwaker sailing around the Great Sea area (possibly expanding its borders or just being somewhere entirely new).
    It would be the proper pirate game Arlo’s always wanted, where you have islands and towns to explore, other ships to battle, a vast ocean to navigate, storms to overcome, everything is upgradable, etc.

    I don’t mind the idea of Zelda having a more consistent story across titles, but I do think that creating a defined structure and development timeline around games like Zelda runs the risk of turning them into soulless corporate products. If you don’t let the devs create new concepts on their own timeline, you might end up missing out on a few truly great games for a greater number of by-the-books games. I feel like the freedom Nintendo devs are given is the reason their games are so unique, and so if the Zelda team is constantly worrying about deadlines for the next Zelda game, we might lose what makes those games special. I dunno, maybe I’m reading too far into it, but I’m always wary of putting more constraints on development cycles.
    tl;dr I don’t want Zelda to start feeling like a corporate franchise over a creative one

      @ego2133 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@firesnakex8 Ok but how did he end up like this?
      Majora's Mask, as great as it is, is merely an interruption in Link's quest. He wanted to find Navi and, at the end of the game, he go back to the Lost Woods in a hope to find her.
      I'm pretty sure you can make a great game out of this, to see how his quest turned out and how he finished as he is in Twilight Princess.

    • @HelloHelloHellobby

      Gameplay wise as a spiritual successor- hell yes.
      An actual connected sequel- that would be awful and wouldn’t make any sense.
      Also for all the timeline people out there- I’m sorry to say the time time doesn’t actually exists. These stories are Legends. Nintendo made one purely for fan service

    • @LupinticDream
      @LupinticDream 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be cool if we had a game where we controlled two different Links in two different time periods. So like, a Twilight Princess sequel where you play as the Hero of Twilight, that also allowed you to play as the Hero of Time post-Majora's Mask during story flashbacks, would be pretty interesting imo.
      But that's only if Nintendo wants to revisit prior events in the timeline and focus on lore stuff, rather than simply continue onwards from Breath of the Wild. Which unfortunately, I don't think they do.

    i'm planning a zelda D&D campaign in which koume and kotake are trying to revive the ganondorf of TP and the players will have to gather six sages to make sure he stays sealed! however, they're going to run into some problems (the forest sage is a kokiri who ends up turning into a skull kid, the spirit sage is the centennial male gerudo who is also this timeline's version of onox from OoS and may try to follow ganondorf's footsteps, the shadow sage is part of an anti-hyrule splinter group of sheikah that may eventually become the yiga, etc) so they're going to have to travel to lorule and find the lorulean sages to fill the places of any hyrule sages that can't or won't perform their sagely duties! i'm trying to work in stuff from a bunch of other games too. valoo from WW shows up to protect the rito, veran from OoA is midna's successor as queen of the twili, prince ralis from TP is still king of the zora, even the king of hyrule is named harkinian to reference the CD-i games. i'm having a lot of fun building my own instance of hyrule!

    I had an idea for a LoZ What If game, back in high school. I am under zero impression that this game will ever happen, but Arlo asked for our ideas, so here you go.
    The game takes place several thousand years after any other LoZ events, and is set in a Hyrule that has been enjoying peace for many generations. Zelda, Link and Ganondorf are all childhood friends, as with Zelda and the big G being royalty, they would have met during diplomatic events, and Link was taken in by the Royal family after his parents died in an accident. However, when they are teenagers, Link discovers a Time/Memory Crystal or something, which reviels to him the truth about the endless cycle that Hyrule has been cursed to repeat. Not wanting that to happen again, and certainly not wanting to be forced to kill one of his best friends, Link sets out on a quest to break the curse and end the loop. When Zelda and Ganondorf discover that Link's vanished, they set out on a quest of their own in order to find him and bring him home.
    You play two versions of events, one following Link and the other following Zelda and Ganondorf. As Link you travel to various locations throughout Hyrule that are both new and call back to preavious games. You're goal is to find clues as to how the curse could be broken, leading up to entering a massive temple build in worship of Demise. Meanwhile, as Zelda and Ganondorf, you follow in Link's wake, trying to catch up to him. You go through the same locations, however all of the puzzles are different and you see areas that Link didn't, as a result of Link's actions.
    This all colminates in Zelda and Ganondorf catching up to Link at the Temple of Demise, having, at this point figured out what Link is trying to do. However, Zelda and Ganondorf have more information and know that what Link is trying to do won't work that way he wants. Link doesn't listen, and activates a force field or something that prevents them from entering the chamber and performs a ritual that draws all of Demise's hate and 'malice' into him. Unfortunatly, instead of it sending him into a coma or something like he thought, it instead turns him into the new vessal of Demise. The game ends with Zelda and Ganondorf needing to seal him within the temple.
    I imagines this as the first of a trilogy. The first being how Link ended up like that, the second being Zelda and Ganondorf searching for a way to save him and the third being them actually saving him. However, I realise that this would likely have to be the last Zelda game ever, and we all know that that's never happening.

      Well I mean, you still GET that story. Things don’t really change until Chapter 5, after the Downfall actually happened. The Champions were literally about to die like in the original timeline. Just remove what Terrako does after the calamity began and you’re pretty much on par with the story of BotW

    • @SpiceWeazel
      @SpiceWeazel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually think that making it an alternate timeline was brilliant. It allowed us to see the characters and world of BOTW pre-Calamity, and to participate in several major events, but allowed us to experience suspense and plot twists because we didn’t know the ending. I also think it would have been frustrating to play a bunch of battles where we’re killed as soon as we win. It wouldn’t be surprising or impactful because we would already know the outcome, and it would be a bit deflating.

    • @DigitalxGamer
      @DigitalxGamer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@chillswany Can you give me a source for that information? BotW itself was never that specific as far as I can remember. And do you have any idea how RIDICULOUS the very idea of a 12 year old being able to pull the Master Sword out of the Pedestal when not even adult Link can do it without clearing a MINIMUM of 24 shrines (and an extra 4 shrines for each Blight he hasn't beaten) actually sounds? Not to mention the very idea of a little kid being able to WIELD the sword to begin with. Remember how in OoT, it was literally too big for him to use so he had to be put to sleep for 7 years? You'll have to forgive me if I find that pill a little difficult to swallow.

      @@SpiceWeazel You can still get suspense from knowing the ending; in fact, prequels actually have more suspense than regular stories because the audience knows how it ends, making the movement of each piece carry far more weight than it normally would.
      Nintendo and Koei Tecmo missed a golden opportunity by not at least having an original-timeline campaign.

    I've had this idea for a Zelda game for a while now that takes place several years after Spirit Tracks. It starts out in New Hyrule and Princess Zelda and the Royal Family has learned that the great sea near their lands suddenly dried up over night, revealing a lost and forgotten kingdom beneath the oceans. So she and a royal guard named Link/Linkle (the player gets to decide) travel down to investigate. The game would have two-player functionality, a steampunk theme, and a lot more. You travel through old Hyrule, going into many of the old dungeons which are now completely different due to the countless years of neglect and ocean decay to try and learn about the forgotten history of Hyrule, awaking ancient magics along the way. The lore idea is that over time as people stopped worshipping the goddesses, the Triforce would lose it's power, thus the power of the goddesses that created the great sea up would fail causing the sea to disappear. Also Demise's curse would reincarnate as some kind of eldritch horror because we honestly don't need another Ganondorf like c'mon Nintendo, I need more villain variety! Also I'm bringing back Fairy companions. One that you can customize like in Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition, and has more abilities other than locking on to enemies. Maybe she can use magic attacks or heal you or find items/rupees for you.

    Something worth noting is that Link never returned the Master Sword to its pedestal in both Breath of the Wild AND in Age of Calamity. I'm guessing that Age of Calamity might assess the issue of Ganondorf's rotting corpse through DLC and maybe BotW2 will have some sort of save file integration with AoC for bonus items and/or dialogue. After all, Age of Calamity is an alternate timeline and not a replacement and I'm super excited to see where BotW2 takes its story beats. I'm hoping it's a massive Hyrule restoration plot while also protecting the kingdom from an even worse evil than it had already previously endured. Like, I really wished I could've explored some of the places seen in Age of Calamity in the same way you traversed through Hyrule in Breath of the Wild; more villages, Castle Town, Hyrule Castle itself.
    Some other (semi-spoiler) things I've noticed from playing Age of Calamity is that Zelda never seemed to have accrued feelings for Link as interpreted from Breath of the Wild. Past events depicted in BotW kinda conveyed that Link and Zelda spent a lot more time isolated together whereas AoC seemed to depict that Zelda was escorted by the company of Link, Impa, and the egg-shaped Guardian. Another weird detail I noticed in AoC is that neither Link nor Zelda are seen riding horses. And there are still some underlying mysteries such as if characters like Astor or Sooga existed in BotW's Hyrule.
