    I feel like the reason they were so secretive about the mechanics is that the paraglider was a main mechanic in botw and now almost every game has it. With all the eyes on this game to see what the next big mechanic would be, I think Nintendo was worried that with how long development was taking that somebody could have made a game with that mechanic before this one was even released.
    With how fast follow in the gaming industry is and with how influential botw was, I wouldn't be surprised if that was a major reason

      I don't think anyone CAN steal this. The sheer amount of programming it would take to implement every mechanically unique combination would be immense. There's a reason it took Nintendo so many years to make what would otherwise be a glorified DLC is because the logistical math gets crazy fast. Just 30 combinable items means 435 combinations to program. How many cynical, lazy, uninspired copycats want to decide what a meat arrow does?

    Honestly, with the fuse mechanic and the ultrahand, I'm starting to see WHY they kept it from us for so long. Even if it doesn't COMPLETELY alleviate it, it puts control of the durability into the players hands, which is what BOTW lacked. When I got a weapon in BOTW I knew that no matter what, I'd be able to use it a certain amount of times before it broke, and nothing I could do would really change that. Now, a weapon can last as long you want it to, as long as you're creative with how you use it and how you fuse it.

That'll make existing mechanics like cooking even more intuitive because you won't have to go into the pause menu to select ingredients, and also paves the way for new mechanics too. Maybe the Zonai Charges can be used as bombs, and by selecting them through the dpad up menu, you can hold one and then choose to throw and detonate it or use it in conjuction with another item or mechanic. My guess/theory is that ascend will be the first ability you get, and perhaps the constructs trap you in a cage which you use ascend to escape from. Or perhaps when you try to catch the falling Zelda we saw in the trailer, you end up at the bottom of a chasm and use the ascend to get back to the surface. Seems like a very intuitive tutorial gameplay thing to do (trapped in a cage, can't do anything except try your new ability and see how it works...)

Breath of the Wild's selling point for me was the huge open world and the non-linear structure. And Tears of the Kingdom's selling point is allowing the player to explore that huge open world with wild, crazy stuff made BY THE PLAYER. At least, I think that is the selling point.

I just feel it’s an odd choice considering that’s just a subset of the audience who played the game and there’s many who don’t care abt that stuff and were more interested in the exploration, side quests, puzzle solving, etc.
      I’m sure all that stuff will still be in the game but it might not be the focus. And the game taking place in the same world won’t help either.
      I was shocked arlo thought the surface world looked “very different” because I just don’t see what he’s talking about at all. Even the side-by-side comparisons between this games world and the previous are just minor changes like missing shines & other small differences.

No amount of cool ways to explore an area are worth much if the only things to find are bread crumbs. It's not that the game can't possibly have all that, they just haven't shown anything like it and don't seem to want to.
      As for the feel of the world, I just hope in places it legit feels like a world under invasion by a dark army and being cursed by an evil sorcerer. I do expect some peaceful areas in the world, but it'd be nice if large sections were covered by a pall of darkness. Even Ocarina of Time's adult Hyrule at least made the skies cloudy near areas affected by a temple's curse. I hope this game does that too, but more noticeably.

    I'm really hoping that this works with Shield surfing too. Like imagine putting ice jelly on your shield will let you surf on water temporarily. Or fire jelly leaving a trail of flames. Or I dunno, put butter on a shield to surf longer. Put bomb on a shield to do a BTB type thing

    I love the seemingly massive amount of experimentation this whole fusion mechanic will enable. Not only does it give reason to all the random monster bits we'll inevitably be hoarding, but it'll also add variety to the otherwise kinda samey combat against weapon-wielding enemies that the first game couldn't quite shake. Also it's just plain funny to me that they're apparently just gonna let you stick anything you want onto your weapons. I just hope it extends to materials as well, I'd love to tack steak onto a stick or something equally silly.

    I think the thing with rewind is the "limitations" Aonuma alluded to. There are some terrain angle limitations in the patents that leaked a while back, so you can't always use it. And it's unlikely that every mountain will have a cave/inside. Climbing will most likely still play a big part in Tears of the Kingdom.

    One thing that I was thinking and didn't know if it was real or not, but there is still a ton of potential for there being a whole underground system to explore. I almost expect the ground level to be a simpler place (with some changes from BOTW but not too many as the new abilities will make the world different) where you gather materials and play around. And because the sky and (hopefully) underground have fewer entrance points, they are the challenging areas. With the ascend ability, you can exit the underground at any point. And with the sky you can jump off almost anywhere. So you make excursions (dungeon runs) for as far as you have the resources to use.
    Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but it has all of the tools there for gameplay like that

    I think actually the sky islands were the big "hook" for this game. It's what they've been highlighting the whole time, and it's even the theme of the cover art. But, yeah this is a huge reveal, nonetheless.

    • @chuckbatman5
      @chuckbatman5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think there's a few different hooks at play here. One is the sky islands, one is the Fuse ability, and I think there are likely more we haven't seen (underground areas?). Nintendo games rarely revolve around just ONE gimmick, and when they do it's usually pretty obvious what that gimmick is early on. The fact that we're this far in and we're only starting to get an idea of that suggests there's a lot of different mechanical hooks.

      Weird, I had the opposite issue
      Botw has a strange quirk where if you buy arrows from a vendor, they will never restock them until you go under 30 arrows. Every time I’d make a new file, my arrow stash would continuously grow & peak around 300 or 400, but would start to fall & I’d just have to wait until I hit 30. Always had a *lot* of elemental arrows tho.

  • @TheCrazyhairdude67
    @TheCrazyhairdude67 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My theory with ascend is that there is a lot of new underground space, a similar amount to the sky islands, and they wanted to make it as easy to return to the surface from underground as it is from the sky.

Building trap doors, cages to snare enemies, building barges/flying machines loaded with explosives and sending it into enemy camps, etc. The new abilities enable all of that stuff.

    I honestly think that it's for someone he's to design video games what's the most impressive about this is not the fact that you can fuse almost every single thing together but how it is fully integrated into the flow of the normal gameplay. Like you look at years ago of a similar concept with Banjo Kazooie nuts and bolts and every time you had to customize something you had to go into a menu and it took you out of the main part of the game and what's so impressive about this is that it is fully integrated into a gameplay where you're not moving around square tiles are going through and it's just take objects and stick them together and just use them.

  • @The_Jho

They developed this for so so long, they had the physics engine in place already, nothing to me was mindblowing. Fusing stuff looks fun, the islands are a cool concept. But I still felt it's more like an expansion and not a new game. I just hope they held back a lot in the footage they released so far.
